Excellent food and friendly service, all at the best prices around, especially the 2 for 1 nigiri selections. Also, the location is right off of Woodward on 9 mile in the most cosmopolitan area of Ferndale. Atmosphere is spot-on, with just-the-right volume (a nice selection of 80's music) so you can still have an easy conversation with a friend. I dine there at least three times per week and always feel right at home. more

Best Sushi in Ferndale 11/1/2008

I have to admit I, wasnt to thrilled about eating in this dinky little sushi restaurant until I walked in and heard the upbeat music, saw all the great art on the walls and saw that it was much bigger than I imagined. It was my girlfriends idea to eat here and Im glad we did. The waitress suggested some awsome drinks and I tried Sake for the first time. I thought the sushi was the freashest Ive had ,and if you're looking for a special treat, try the Dr. Love roll. Im still thinking about the yummy taist of Tempura shrimp mixed with avacado and succulant eel placed on top. Ill definetly go back and bring new friends .\r Pros: Pricing, good location, great music Cons: could use a little updating more

Best Sushi in town for the last 5 years 10/30/2008

I like spicy sushi and no one touches this place. Staff is friendly, and service is great. Everything is fresh & tasty. The Sweet Jesus, Dynamite California Roll, and Volcano Roll are to die for. Wish I was in ferndale more. Pros: Great place to take you mind off your worries Cons: if they are buzy, you might hae to wait a while more

Once was Good, Now Absolutely Disgusting . 10/16/2008

I was bombarded by fruit flies while I waited for my fishy (smelled like garbage) sushi. When I poured out the soy sauce, there were DEAD FLIES in the sauce. All the flies started to land on my food, it was disgusting. Wait staff doesn't care, crappy service and rude. It's unfortunate because this place used to be really good, but now avoid at all costs. I'll never go there again and I'll tell everyone to avoid. Thankfully there are much better sushi places in town now. Pros: enjoy the dead flies in the soy sauce. Cons: Everything. more

No more Nami for me 8/5/2008

I've been a patron of Nami for years, and I've put up with the typically spotty service and rude owner for the quality of the sushi that eventually arrived at my table at a reasonable price. I have to say, no more. Our last visit featured obviously overburdened watistaff (two servers for all indoor and outdoor tables in a full restaurant), chefs and servers shouting at each other about orders, and a cloud of fruit flies hovering over the tables. Finally, the quality of the sushi on my last few visits has fallen to the point where I'll gladly go elsewhere and pay a little more for better quality, service, and ambiance. This change in quality may be attributable to the new guys behind the sushi counter, but the high turnover rate of staff in general is a sign that something's not right here. \r \r If you want to save a few bucks on mediocre sushi with poor service, stop in at Nami. \r \r Sadly, I'm done with what used to be a local diamond in the rough. Pros: A few bucks cheaper than others around town Cons: Quality and service have bottomed out more

standard, fair sushi; obnoxiously bad service 6/29/2008

The sushi was okay. It was reasonably fresh and tasted reasonably good. There were a few more bells and whistles than I like to have in sushi (no cream cheese, thank you very much). But the service was really obnoxious. At first I didn't understand how the menu was organized and when I asked, the young woman was pretty patronizing. Turns out that the menu is in two sections - rolls that aren't inside out, and rolls that are. Once I saw that, I got it, but the server was incredibly patronizing while she explained what a sushi roll is. Sorry, dear. I've probably been eating sushi since before you were born. Your little restaurant in Ferndale, MI is not the place to be condescending to an Asian American ordering sushi. Moreover, she didn't take our food order until our drinks were half finished (about 20 minutes), and then the food didn't come out for another 40. The restaurant was empty. Luckily, we were drunk from drinking our martinis on empty stomachs so we just laughed it off. I'd go back because the sushi was pretty good, the prices were pretty good, the drinks were pretty good, and maybe little Ms. Muffin has moved on in her career. Pros: reasonably good Cons: service is obnoxiously bad more

Honestly, this place is fair. The sushi is alright, but nothing special. Some of the rolls had an off taste and were not very appetizing. The wait is long and service has been poor the two times i've been there.\r \r If you want sushi in that area, try noble or cafe sushi... more

Fantastic suhi and creative cocktails 12/14/2007

Nami is my favorite place to dine. The owner has a new business partner who really seens to be helping out in the service/server area. The rolls are good sized and very reasonably priced. The beer and drink selections are vast. The wine selections are nice and they totally compliment the food. The atmosphere is high energy and fun. They were just given an award by Ambassaor magazine for the ""Best Sushi in metro Detroit"". It is DEFINITELY worth checking out. You won't be dissappointed. Pros: GREAT FOOD AND DRINKS Cons: none large enough to mention more

ehh, wasn't that good 7/8/2007

i have friends who absolutely love this place, so i decided to give it a try a month ago. needless to say, i was disappointed. rolls are small, pricey, wait staff is moody. rice tasted old, was hard. my friends really like the rolls with cream cheese here, but i prefer the stuff with fish and vegetables, not the fried, cheesy stuff. if you are like me and actually eat sushi for the fish, then go elsewhere. in the area, i prefer cafe sushi or noble fish. the dining experience at cafe sushi is much more elegant, and the prices are similar (and maybe a little more expensive) to nami. noble fish is less expensive and so much tastier. the dining experience isn't so hot there, it's a very small seating area, but at least the staff is friendly, the fish is fresh, and the servings are generous. more

Absolutely grody to the MAX 7/1/2007

Yuck. I just had my first worst sushi experience of my life and I am grossed out beyond belief. I used to love this place, it was good at one time. First off the service is slow. Secondly 3 teens were in charge of making the sushi, there was no love in the presentation or the flavor. I used to love the Marlon Brando... it is sooo barfy now, they are obviously using the same pesto that they use @ Maria's. It tasted like fish with pizza sauce, if I were blindfolded and took a bite I would swear it was little cesars deep dish pizza....but it grossed me out even more because it was sushi. Also all of the food tasted like the refridgerator! The volcano is supposed to be warm and crunchy on top, instead it was cold sloppy wet and again had major fridge taste. Goodbye forever Nami..... Pros: relaxed atmosphere, I dont have to go back again. Cons: slow service, cold, gluey sushi, soggy cold tempure, pubey teens posing as sushi chefs more

Sushi below average except Shitake Mushroom. BAD service. 4/3/2007

I travel all over the world and I try to have sushi everywhere that I go and I think the sushi is not that good. The rolls are extremely small. The only thing that I just loved was the shitake mushroom. You don't see that at other sushi restaurants. The service is another story. The waitress that we had ""Jennifer"" was horrible and rude. I asked her many times for water and finally got it after 45 minutes and she would barely even look at us. She finally took our order and it took an hour to get our food. We decided to give the tip to the sushi chef instead of her and when I got my charge bill in the mail, realized that she had charged 25% onto it. I did get it taken off since I still had my receipt. We will not go back again. Pros: Shitake Mushroom sushi Cons: BAD service more

Good Sushi, Bad Service 1/11/2007

The sushi here was good - not the best I've ever had, but good. Prices were average, decor was pretty standard for a sushi place. Overall, a decent restaurant. But, I have to jump on the ""bad service"" bandwagon of the other reviewers - the owner (who loiters, smoking, outside his own non-smoking restaurant!), and the two servers I encountered, were totally uninterested in me as a customer. There are simply too many sushi places around these days for those kinds of flaws. more

Usually slow 12/8/2006

My husband and are regulars and, while we love the food, the services has gotten slower without much avail. Unfortunately, I recommend you don't go in hungry. Pros: creative dishes Cons: slow slow service more

Thursday 2 for 1's!!!! 12/7/2006

I love Nami. It's so much more low-key than Sakana, which is just arranged in a weird, futuristic way. The People are great, and Thursdays for 2 for 1 night CAN NOT be beat! Enjoy Ferndale's Original and Best Sushi Choice. more

Owner does NOT know what ""customer service"" means!! 11/5/2006

My boyfriend and I sat at a table directly in front of the sushi chef/owner, waiting for over an hour for two starter rolls. He wouldn't answer our server (who was wonderful) when she asked where our food was. He knew we were waiting there that long and did nothing about it. After every other person received their food, our server asked again, and he yelled back, ""I don't know!"" After she put our order back in, he decided to take a nice 5-10 minute break while we still sat waiting. The only things that kept us from walking out was that we were starving for sushi and it was freezing outside! The food was actually good, but not worth the wait and horrible attitude. Pros: Great sushi Cons: Extremely rude owner, over an hour wait for two rolls! more

Inventive and delicious sushi! 6/7/2006

I like the food at Nami a lot. They have traditional sushi as well as unexpected combination rolls with fun names like the ""Scarface Roll"" or the ""Treehugger Roll."" The Scarface, by the way, is delicious. The seaweed salad is also really good, and comes served in a festive martini glass. The only drawback to this place is that they don't explain all of those funky rolls to you on the menu, and most of the servers have no idea what's in them, nor do they care to find out for you. They also have a nice saki/beer/wine menu. Pros: Great food, fun ambience Cons: Service is sometimes bad more

Best Sushi in Town 4/20/2006

I have gone to Nami several times now and every time I am pleasantly surprised by the presentation of the food, creative roll choices and the taste of the Sushi is always fresh and delicious. Great service and modern casual ambiance add to what is always a great experience. If you are in the mood for sushi I highly recommend! Also a cute outdoor patio in the summer! more

Awesome sushi, somewhat rude service 1/26/2006

My brother and I ate here last week for the first time. We both had never eaten at a sushi bar before, so we didn't know what the traditional way to go about it. Our server wasn't much help either. She took forever getting our drinks and barely made eye contact with us. Reguardless, the food was amazing. We started off with some delicious miso soup with tofu. For dinner, we had the scorpion roll and the soft-shell crab roll. The presentation was beautifull and it was a nice treat. However, the service leaves alot to be desired! more

Service not half as good as the food 1/24/2006

I had been looking forward to dining at Nami after being recomended by a few friends. a recomandation that I don't plan to pass on. The food aside, we had probably the most arrogant server that I've ever encountered. He was rude, unfriendly and made us feel very unwelcomed. He walked around with his hands in his pocket and was chewing gum constantly. I am amased that the owners do not pay as close attention as they should to whom they have representing their establishment. Sushi was prepared with delicacy and taste. Looked and tasted incredible. It's just a shame that the service didn't go along with it. Pros: good sushi Cons: service, service, service more

Great service, one-of-a-kind dishes 11/27/2005

I'm a regular at Nami, and I can say that the service issues mentioned in other reviews have been solved. Nami is back to its old, excellent self. The servers are attentive and friendly. Nami's sushi, as always, is fresh, prepared and presented as well as any you'll find in the Detroit area. But what really sets it apart is its creativity. Nami offers different specials every day, and their chef combines ingredients and flavors with a flair that shows his passion for food. The only thing that could be improved is the Edemame. It's good, but doesn't seem quite as fresh as I've had elsewhere. Nami also features an excellent, hand-selected list of Japanese micro-brews and Sake. It's a nice touch that sets Nami apart even more. more
