Rude and Pompous Service, OK Food, Reservations Not Honored 6/7/2011

Reservation made1 month in advance for a special occasion, requested a window table and a $50 occasion cake . Arrived, NO window table, was told a pompously and rudely ""seating is first come first served"" Ordered a $285 bottle of champage, it arrived warm, no apoligies from the staff, stuck it in an ice bucket. Special occasion cake never arrived. Requested more bread was told none left. Terrible rude service, extraordinary prices OK food One can not charge these kinds of prices and provide diner like service at all levels with medicre food. more

Fantastic food! service! and wine! 9/6/2009

This restaurant ranks among the best I've ever been to - and that includes several Michelin starred restaurants in France. Our food was excellent, both in it's remarkable flavor and innovative combinations. My husband's steak was delectable - rare on the inside and a slight crisp to the outside. His lemon sole was fresh, flavorful and cooked to perfection. When I tasted my grilled foie gras, I think I swooned! The only disappointment of the evening was the chocolate mousse bomb - but the deliciously soft, melt in your mouth semifreddo with strawberries drizzled with balsamic glaze more then made up for it! The wine pairings were wonderful and our server was as knowledgeable as any restaurant sommelier and very helpful. Water glasses filled as if by magic and plates disappeared almost as soon as the food did. It was a magical evening - we will definitely be back! Pros: varied wine list, scenic view, free parking, friendly staff Cons: restaurant was slightly chilly for me more

Meritage -- Rstaurant Week (Summer 2008) 8/14/2008

Meritage is a sophisticated eatery nestled along Boston?s harbor serving fresh, seasonal fare perfectly paired with wine. It is known among locals as one of the finest restaurants in the city which explains its popularity during Restaurant Week. If you choose to visit during Restaurant Week, be prepared for service that is not quite up to snuff for Meritage and food that leaves you wondering why this restaurant is so famed given what you just tasted. Among Restaurant Week restaurants, it?s one of the better options, but compared to Meritage outside of Restaurant Week, it leaves much to be desired.\r ~Inspired Chef\r beantownsbites.wordpress. com more

Why was I unimpressed? 12/19/2007

As a pescetarian (a veggie who eats fish), I refuse to go to crappy seafood places and only expect the highest quality when I dine out. Meritage is definitely a beautiful restaurant (with its twinkly lights smiling down on you from the ceiling; the view; the ridiculously long wine list), but the food? Eh. Not so much. Maybe my tastebuds were off because I felt bad asking my date take me to such an expensive place, but really, my small plate ($16) of monkfish was microscopic...and a little tough to chew. I think the reason I ended up dissing my entree (the halibut, $32) was because I so love a similar rendition of the dish at Clio...which is cheaper, by the way. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy Mertiage at all...I did...but I think I could get a similar meal with slightly larger portions for less at other restaurants (yes, including Clio). Pros: Beautiful scenery, good service (mostly), wine list Cons: Too pricey for small portions (even though it is fine dining) more

top notch staff, view, service, wine... but the food was not to taste 7/23/2007

the restaurant decor was amongs tthe best of boston, the view was gorgeous, the staff is especially accomodating, the help w/ the menu is great, the wine list is fab. we ordered a bunch of small plates, which unfortunately not all was to taste or cooked as great can be. nonetheless, this is def a place to impress others. more

Great Restaurant Week Menu 8/15/2006

My bf and I went to Meritage last night for the restaurant week menu and were soooo impressed. There were about 4 or 5 choices each for the appetizer, entre, and dessert, all from the normal menu. I had to ask the waitress if this was the prix fix menu, cause I couldn't believe it. I had the fried soft shell crab for starter, which was so good, i wanted that for my main meal, and my bf had the smoked salmon, which reminded him of home at christmas (he's french). Then arrived the filet mignon for him (couldn't believe THAT was on the menu; they didn't ask him how he wanted it cooked though) and then the raw tuna for me, funky, but delicious. Finally we ended with the cheese platter and a chocolate selection (loved the variety of both!). We weren't able to get a table by the window, but were seated against the wall a bit isolated, so we had our privacy. I would love to dine there again - at that price especially! Pros: restaurant week menu!!! view of the harbor, ambiance Cons: waitress was a bit rushed, but still friendly. more

Unexpectedly one of the BEST dining experiences ever... 8/8/2006

My family was in town for a long weekend so I had wanted to make reservations at a restaurant that had a nice view. We had already been to the Top of the Hub and so I had decided that a place with a water view would be nice. This restaurant was fantastic. The staff was very attentive, we were seated promptly. You can have the option of ordering small plates and large plates which is good for parties that have varying degrees of appetites. The waiter suggested that three small plates was the equivalent of one large plate. This is also great if you want to sample other dishes. I thought two small plates was an ample amount of food. In comparison to the other restaurants we ate at that weekend, Meritage was the best and wasn't nearly as expensive as some of the other trendier places we had tried. It's also quiet which allows you to have a nice conversation at dinner without yelling. Valet parking is free and there's a bar in the hotel that you can go to before or after dinner if you aren't quite ready to call it a night. Pros: Great food, Quiet Restaurant, Complimentary Valet Parking more

Excellent Service and a Great Wine List 6/26/2006

Two of my friends and I went to the Meritage on a Wednesday early on in the night for one of my friends birthdays. We arrived ahead of reservationt time and were seated promptly(the restaurant was empty). The service was excellent, the wine list was superb and the food was wonderful. My friends beef was more well done than she had wanted but the immediately took it off the bill (she didn't want to send it back because it still tasted delicious). We had told them over the phone that it was our friends birthday and when the bill came they had taken one of the dessert plates off the bill as well. We also loved their unique menu set up to help you choose a wine that will compliment your meal perfectly. We will definitely be returning soon. Pros: Great wine list, excellent service, attentive waiters Cons: the food is better than their desserts more

Poor service, average food, great wine list. 9/9/2005

I hosted a dinner party at Meritage for 6 guests. When we arrived our table was not ready because they were ""extremely busy"" even though there was only 4 out of probably 20-30 tables with 2-4 guests each. The service was rude and hurried. The waitress provided a very brief and unhelpful explanation of the menu. The wine list is quit extensive which contains terrific options in most price ranges. The menu is very creative, but the food itself wasn't so great as it was bland and salty. The dessets we ordered tasted like they'd been in the refrig for a few days. The wait staff continued to be very rushed and distracted. Not sure who they were waiting on due to the fact there was only about 18-20 guests in the entire place including our table. Go figure. Excellent views of Boston harbor, but we will not go back. Pros: Waterfront, wine list Cons: Service, Food more

Amazing Wine List 11/21/2004

I went to Meritage the other day on a recomendation from a friend. It was a great dining experiance! The wine list is absolutely amazing and it surely lived up to the hype. An all around great value! Pros: Wine list, View, Service more

Go somewhere else for brunch 5/21/2004

If I wanted to have eggs cheese and bagels and be ignored by the waitstaff I'd go to McDonalds. For a $40 brunch buffet, the waitstaff only came out with 3 small plates in the 2.5 hours we were there. The rest of the time we had no choice but to fill ourselves with well-presented diner food like bagels and eggs. The waitstaff were attentive enough to refold our napkins, but failed to fill our glasses even after requesting more orange juice, water, and coffee several times. Even when the times they did come back, they only filled the glass of the person who asked. Our silverware was taken away with our plates but never replaced. Again, it took several requests before they responded. However, the view was beautiful and the decor in the dining room clean. I would not come back for brunch, and hesitate to return for dinner. Pros: View Cons: , slim buffet selection more

A room with a view 9/3/2003

The decor and view were stunning but I go back to a restaurant for the food. The lighted bar was complemented by an excellent list of wine and liquors, enought to make it my cheers. The variety and quality of the food is outstanding. The concept of small portions of everything for $14 is unique and makes going out a fun adventure. My lasting impression is dining at Meritage is a great way to get out of a routine. I have been back at least 5 times inn 9 months. Pros: rich but good value, Decor and view, wine list Cons: no groups over 8 more

Better than The Fed, in my book 5/19/2003

On Thursday night, I went to The Federalist with four others, and we each ordered an appetizer, entree and dessert and shared. On Friday night, I did the tasting menu at Meritage. I thought the service and food at Meritage were both superior. Perhaps Meritage was just hitting on all cylinders that right, but each course, the endive salad, the soft shell crab, the guinea hen, the cheese course and the absolutely fantastic Nougatine Wrapped Apricot Cream dessert were very well paired. I liked that their tasting menu paried excellent local wines that were not necessarily outrageously expensive. For $80 a person, the wine pairing menu was a fine value compared to the tasting menu at many other restaurants. Best of all was the service. Excellent waitstaff and a sweetheart of a manager. Amazing views of the Harbor that you wouldn't get on Beacon Street. They even validated my parking. Pros: Food, Service, Tasting Menu more

Cool setting 3/23/2003

I thought Meritage had a cool atmosphere and offered a great view, but the food was just average. The small/large plate concept was unique and allowed everyone to share both different appetizers and entrees. The wine list was excellent and the service was attentive and helpful. I would recommend it to someone to try just once, but that is all. Pros: Wine list, setting/location, great service Cons: average food more

A dining paradise. 1/31/2003

I was very impressed with the artistic creations in both the food and the decor, in addition to the attentive waitstaff, and the overall atmosphere of my dining experience. Pros: selection, wine list, presentation Cons: portion size, value more
