Editorial review from Citysearch 8/30/2013

We would like to recognize our salesperson at Pintchik, Shana, who was very knowledgable and helpful in our selection of wooden blinds. The service was excellent. more

Service is dead, & Pintchik is kicking the corpse 7/29/2011

It is one thing to be ignored - that is their standard operating procedure. And of course, they don't have the item you are looking for - well, you takes your chances. But its quite another thing to be asked to pick up the coins you've just counted out, and place them - reverently - in the cashier's hand as a show of ""courtesy"" - while juggling your wallet and bag. Actually, there are other hardware stores in the area, and I intend to patronize any of them instead. Maybe one of them will appreciate having customers. more

They are local and they know stuff but.... 12/14/2009

Without these guys I'd be stuck going a million miles to Home Depot. Good quality paints and knowledgeable help when you can get it. If you join the 'club' it is slightly cheaper. Pros: large and varied inventory Cons: can be expensive more

Gone downhill 5/9/2009

I've been coming here for about 10 years and it was definitely better when I first started coming here. The selection is worse for one: at one point the store was the size of about 6 storefronts. I would say it's down to about 4 now. But I would say the biggest problem is that 1/2 the store is locked away in cases of one kind or another--screws, tools, all the plumbing supplies--and the staff basically shuttles from case to case unlocking them with an exasperated look on their faces. As a result as others have noted it's really hard to get someone's attention. It's still the best place in the neighborhood to buy paint, but I try to get other stuff elsewhere. Pros: good vibe Cons: long waits for service more

Pintchik 3/19/2009

I've been shopping at Pintchik since 1995 and I'm now putting together my fourth apartment with their help. Though it usually takes a minute or two to find a salesperson to ask a question, once I do they spend as much time as I need to tell me whatever it is I need to know, from mounting shelves on dry wall to what kind of paint to get. Pros: Great advice Cons: It takes a minute or two to find someone to help more

No attention to detail, but otherwise ok 3/7/2009

While I appreciate the 'down home' atmosphere of this old-school hardware store, my experience was a bit lackluster. It is frustrating to get back home and find that they gave you the wrong items, then have to head back to explain it to several people before getting the right answers and the right products. The prices are a bit on the steep side as well, although it's easier to buy here than at say Home Depot based on size alone. I'd be okay with the prices if the service were better. Pros: Convenient (other than hours of operation) Cons: Staff overwhelmed or underprepared, bad reccomendations, pricy more

5 star reviews for Pintchik by shills 1/27/2009

the glowing reviews here are shills. look at the commentors' review history, many many of the 5 star givers only have one review, and its for Pintchik. Really? when were you so inspired by a hardware store that you signed up for an account to post just that review? \r \r Let this be proof that this place is dishonest, on top of overpriced and HORRIBLE service. Only once was I treated nicely, otherwise you'll be made to feel like you're not worth their time. Pros: close to my house Cons: poor customer service, prices, they write their own glowing reviews more

always helpful! 10/13/2008

I love this place. Pintchick is super-friendly, and everyone there is helpful and knowledgeable. It's a real pleasure to have in the neighborhood! Pros: Friendly, local, knowledgable Cons: not open late--tough to stop by after work more

I love the staff... 10/3/2008

I walked past three other hardware stores the other day to get to Pintchik, because I knew they wouldn't treat me like a dumb blond. A really nice guy (he wouldn't tell me his name...""there's no 'I' in team"" he says...) helped me find the right sized screws to replace the ones that my cat stole from me so I could re-mount my wall sconce, and then gave me the screws for free. And when I couldn't get my kitchen faucet apart to install a water filter several months back, another staff member assured me it came apart and sold me a 7$ wrench to do the job instead of trying to sell me a whole new faucet. They are awesome there, and I find what I'm looking for 95% of the time. I'm glad I live nearby! more

Not to big, not to small, just a great neighborhood hardware store. 9/21/2008

I've been using Pintchik Hardware since I built out an artist's loft in the neighborhood in June 2000. It's a nice comfortable size between a giant Home Depot warehouse and a bodega hardware store. You can get everything from traditional hardware, plumbing, and painting supplies, to a decent selection of home furnishings; I rented a full wood floor refinishing sander from them (although I don't know if they still have it) and anything that didn't come from a contractor supply company (like the 100 sheets of drywall and the water heater) came from Pintchik. They have almost everything you need, but you can still get in and get out in a reasonable amount of time.\r The service at the store is great; sometimes the store is crowded and very busy, but most of the staff has been there since I've been going, and they've always been pleasant, helpful, and knowledgeable, even when they've got 5 people asking them questions. I've found that the owner, Matt Pintchik, will bend over backwards to help anyone who comes into his store (or even people just walking by it), and seems to wish that he could help every customer individually. I wish I had this kind of neighborhood hardware store near my new apartment. more

Love These Guys 9/17/2008

I've had nothing but great experiences here. In fact, on my last visit they not only recommended a competitor (to cut a key they were unable to do themselves), they gave me -- free! -- three copies of another key because it was for a public school teacher. more

nice place but dont try to ask anything from the owners wife 9/13/2008

Great Hardware Store 8/20/2008

I love going into this store. The ""old school"" environment and courteous staff make shopping at Pintchik a pleasurable experience.\r \r Pros: Staff, Service, Atmosphere more

Great old fashioned service! 8/19/2008

I just went to Pintchik to pick up some lock washers. I am always amazed at their level of customer service and good old fashioned neighborhood friendliness, even for a 50 cent purchase. This place reminds me of the days before everything corporate took over small town USA. ( I know, Brooklyn isn't a small town) I would just like to thank Pintchik for staying in Park Slope and commend them on their commitment to provide outstanding service at a time when you just don't find that anymore. Pros: friendly, knowledgeable staff, great selection, free popcorn, dog treats Cons: free popcorn more

Professional, Courteous, Polite and Patient Customer Service and Great Selection 8/15/2008

I have a pink bathroom. The toilet, the bathtub, & the tiles all exude a sense of quiet femininity. Unfortunately, I?m a straight white guy, so everything I buy for the bathroom HAS to be blue. And I?m to interior decorating what Rod Stewart is to fashion. So, I?ve been looking for a blue wall clock (I have I.B.S. and I spend more time in the john than any two people should). I?ve visited every Closeout Connection, mom & pop hardware/electronics store, K-Mart, and 99 cents & Up store that I can find and... nothing. Finally, I decide to give these folks a try. The only seemingly blue clocks are on the top shelf of their cabinet which contain the broken, discontinued and display models. So Chris, a friendly salesman, proceeds to get up on a ladder & show me every dark looking clock up there until we find one that is Navy blue & works. He then stays up on the ladder for another five minutes while I go through all the shower curtains asking his opinion on every one and having him check the price and availability. He never even looks at me sideways & evens points me towards a cool rubber bathmat that matches my new curtains. Then, John, the cashier, informs me of & signs me up for the store card, which saves me a few bucks on the spot (and doesn?t cost me a thing), and he even laughs at my corny jokes. The next day, I put up the clock, lay down the bathmat, and realize the curtain doesn?t go with anything. So I returned it today and John gave me a full refund, without any hassles. These guys should get hazard pay for this kind of thing, or at least time and half. And yes, the store prices may not be the cheapest in Brooklyn, but the wide selection, friendly, helpful and above all patient staff make you feel like a valued customer regardless of how much you spend or how nutty you are. And in this day and age of soulless and disinterested Home Depot style superstores, I?ll take great customer service over a little bit of savings any day of the week. more

An Asset To The 'Hood 8/2/2008

Pintchik's is all one could hope for in a hardware store. They're the first place to go in confidence that it will be there on the shelf waiting for you, be it tools, paint, screws, light bulbs, etc. The staff is courteous, knowledgeable, and have often directed me to the exact items I'd need for the particular job. Ask for Sal; he knows his stuff. We've also had success asking them to order items that weren't available; they were in store within days. All in all we've formed a wonderful neighborly relationship with Pintchik's and look forward to continued business with them for years to come. more

Where's the love? 8/1/2008

I don't understand all the customer service complaints. I switched to Pintchik after several lousy experiences at Tarzian and have been coming back (happily) for several years. Was in last night for custom paint; two of the counter guys were helping other customers, and after waiting for a bit, a third guy materialized who quickly tracked down the new color code (Pratt & Lambert having changed the numbers in the intervening years) and it all went smoothly. Having seen the negative reviews on this site, I actually made a point of listening in to the other conversations--in both cases the other customers were also getting very good, thorough, expert service. So I am at a loss to explain the bad reviews. FWIW, Pintchik is very aware of them, and I overheard one of the guys say to one of the customers (they evidendly knew each other) that they would appreciate any kind words on City Search. \r So here are mine. more

great neighborhood hardware store 7/8/2008

I don't usually write these things but I recently visited Pintchiks and found them to be making a real effort to improve their customer service reputation. I usually shop there for paint, of which they have a very good selection. This time I needed a ceiling fan, which they carry but it is not a big item for them. When they didn't have exactly what I wanted in stock, they spent a lot of time with me to look at their distributors online sites to look for it. I originally went to both Lowes and Home Depot which are closer to where I live. They had so little information and no one willing to help me find the information that it was a real relief to get the help I received from the staff at Pintchik.\r I will definitely continue to shop here. more

A Brooklyn Landmark 7/4/2008

My wife and I have been going to Pintchik for about 20 years mostly for painting supplies. The staff couldn't be more helpful, recommending products and even throwing in a few free items or discounting items because they were genuinely enthusiastic about the item. An oddball place with a big cow out front, free popcorn and dog food. Sometimes we've encountered staff who didn't quite know what they were doing but that has mostly been the exception and their choice of paint is unparalleled. more

A-1 customer service 7/2/2008

The customer service I received today has revived my belief in patronizing the neighborhood stores, especially during this period of rising gas prices. Who wants/needs to drive to Home Depot when we can get top notch service right near home!! I needed four pegs for my bookshelf and when we couldn't find the right size, the person who was assisting me used his ingenuity, found a metal rod and sawed off four pegs that matched the size I needed. I am a very happy shopper! more
