Love this place. great fresh fish! worth every penny!

So over rated it's ridiculous 8/30/2006

The food was good, not ingenious, but above average. My boyfriend and I are really big on sushi. We went omakase and the bill with tip was over $450 for two people. The most disappointing part of it was we were expecting amazing sushi and all we got was okay cooked and semi-cooked food. So not worth the price and hassle of trying to get a decent reservation time. Service was good but the ambience needs work--small, cramp, dark and sort of just yucky. I'm so disappointed. Pros: Service Cons: expensive for what you get more

not the best for sure ! 8/25/2006

Ok the food is fresh and good but this restaurant is WAY over rated ! Really expensive for what it is and you're not Tom Cruise they'll make you wait for a while even with reservations. Besides it's really expensive so you're actually paying for the name ! If you want the best of the best go to HamaSaku if Matsuhisa is a 6 Hamasaku is a 10 ! more

the O.G.!! 7/18/2006

i cannot believe i haven't left a review for my favorite upscale sushi/azn fusion LA restaurant. lowkey ambience with TOP OF THE LINE FARE. just make sure ur wallet is thick enough for the palatable experience. Pros: great dishes, skilled sushi chefs Cons: expensive more

TO DIE FOR 6/22/2006

The food at Matsuhisa is superb. i went there a few days ago and had a great time. The bill was sky high but well worth the money. I myself am not a seafood fan and raw seafood is even worth. This restauraunt however had plenty of great dishes for those of you who don't like fish. The waiters are extremly nice and you are warmly greeted when you arive. Everything about this place will keep you coming back for more. Pros: parking, ambienece, service Cons: price more

If you don't go to here you are MISSING OUT!!!! 5/17/2006

Can it really get any better than this? No, I don't think so. Everything is delectable here. Sure it may be pricey, but it's so worth it for like a special occasian. Everything is so fresh and the Saki's are great because they offer a variety of flavors (best is Passion Fruit and Pineapple) You just can't pass this up. The Bento Box is just perfect...not too sweet and not too heavy. This is Travis and Shana's (Meet the Barker's) fav place to dine as well as mine. The last time I went I saw Mark Wahlberg..Don't think, Just Go! Pros: Food, Desert, Everything more

Still my favorite sushi in LA 2/2/2006

I have been going to Matsuhisa for many years . One thing that is amazing about this place compared to a lot of other places is the consistency . I have yet to have a bad food experience ! . I have pretty much been to all the new "" fancy "" sushi places - but I still consider this the best sushi in LA . It is time to update the interior through . more

Best Sushi in town! 1/23/2006

Me and my friend went there on Mid of August on a Friday night, we didn't have reservation, but it was early, so we are able to get a seat on the sushi bar. We each had the chef's special for $120 a person which is also called omasaka. I liked the chef Kasu - who is a really experienced and nice iron chef over there. Surprisingly and unexpected, Nobu was there that day!! He was very friendly, and took several pix with me. Even though he said hi to most of his ""frequently"" customers but not us the ""casual"" customer, it was very nice seeing him there. The $120 chef's speical was very nice, every thing is made to order and very elegant and unique. You got what you pay for, but you can be assure that you will never get sick from this restaurant. Pros: great chef, ingredient, presentation Cons: long wait more

No Urasawa 1/4/2006

Had the whole omakase room (near the entrance), which seats 8 reserved. had high expectation coming in, but a bit disappointed. 1st course spring roll with yuzu sauce-a little greasy. 2nd was the mix appetizer consisting of some pickles, lobster ceviche, snapper new sashimi style, and octopuc carpacio-only the lobster passed the test. 3rd baked king crab with lemon-ginger vinagrette-really fresh, definitely enjoyed it. 4th was foie gras with sweet sake-great taste, but texture was too hard, preferred less cooked. 5th was US kobe beef with assorted mushroom-passable. 6th was sushi: toro, hamachi, sake, uni, hakai-the uni was terrific, ate 3 of them in fact, courtersy of my neighbours:). meal ended with clam-based miso soup. and i had the bento box, chocolate souffle which i highly recommend. they also have great crab with spicy sauce, a perfect combination with rice. however, in my opinion, urasawa still tops matsuhisa any time. Pros: reasonable price Cons: a bit cramped more

Off the charts! 11/24/2005

This was one of the first places I went to in Los Angeles, and it met every high expectation. The flavor of the fish was off the charts, and it's somewhat of a shame because it has been hard to replicate that feeling despite trying a whole host of sushi options in Southern California. the prices are high, but for the special bursts of flavor, it's worth it. more

Worth the money 11/6/2005

Everyone must try this place at least once. It is well worth the money. The food is amazing, as are all the deserts. You will be more than satisfied. more

You want the truth? 9/8/2005

atsuhisa is a good resturant, great sushi and fusions by Nobu. If youre a sushi connoisseur, youll be satisfied. If youre idea of good sushi is California rolls and Kabuki, youll be blown away. I've had the fixed menu multiple times (it has always been the same), and was usually pleased. However, for the price you are paying, it is only ok. Example: the famous jalapeno yellowtail dish is only 6 tissue thin slices of yellowtail for $20. Some of my peeves are: the waiters are often rushed and look down on you if you only order tap water or tea, and the tables are much too close for romance. Pros: good sushi, creative dishes Cons: really expensive, crowded dining area, condescending waiter more

My obsession!!! 8/21/2005

Just say the name Matsuhisa and i smile. It is by far my favorite restaurant. It took one visit with my boyfriend and i was hooked. All the chefs are fun and friendly. The service up front is especially helpful, prompt, and very accomodating. Love is a strong word... and I LOVE this place. the only con is the price, It can be quite pricey... to get the most for your money try The ceviche and yellowtail jalepeno dishes.. Oh and dessert_the bento box... My Fave!!!! more

Go for the hot food 8/17/2005

My brother and I dropped in for impromptu dinner on a weeknight and waited 15 minutes for two seats at the sushi bar. We ordered a mix of sushi as well hot food off the menu. Surprisingly, the sushi was average, something you can get at most mid-priced sushi restaurants. But the hot food was wonderful. We tried to kobe beef, the miso sea bass, king crab tempura, and a couple of things I can't remember, but all of them were very tasty. The portions are small, more like tapas than entrees. The price tag was steep, we were full but not bursting, and including tax and tip, it was close to $300. more

interesting and unique food 8/10/2005

husband took me there for my birthday. the fish was very fresh, and they had some interesting food combinations. we were dissappointed at first when we had to keep ordering rather thatn have the chef make the food omakase-style. most interesting thing was the tuna and beluga caviar in a champagne glass. the bill was over $300 for the two of us, kind of over-priced for what it was, but you're paying for nobu's fame more

Editorial review from Insider Pages 4/5/2005

Great food, but not sure if the price is worth it. This is a high class establishment, where the food is premium, the service is good, the dishes are small and the prices are high. Great for date nights, but expect to pay $100 per person. more

the exquisite, but expensive tastes of japan 4/5/2005

i received the special treatment at the matsuhisa because i went with the c.e.o./president of sony japan. therefore, we had the top, best chefs of the house serve us. i have eaten in many japanese sushi/sashimi places throughout the u.s., and no other, beats the savoring tastes at the matsuhisa. yumyumyum. the sashimi had a lot of flavor, similar to the flavors from hokkaido, japan. oh, and the sashimi/sushi were those of the exact style as in japan. more
