What a find--we LOVED it! 1/21/2011

Le Happy is a funky but quaint little after hours hole in the wall, serving AMAZING food. Local art on the walls, Daniel Johnston playing in the background, and serving until almost 1:00am--a perfect place to relax and end the evening.\r \r Ordering after midnight, we had two fabulous savory crepes: walnut, apples, and goat cheese--yum, and the other was the jamon jamon which was even better. We added a salad (so fresh it could have been cut from the field that day, and a little half steak cooked perfectly and just enough to fully satisfy.) After that, we couldn't resist the sweet crepes, downing two more, one with nutella and bananas and the other with pear, chocolate and hazelnuts. \r \r Jus Fabulous! (And BTW, our server was super nice and let us move tables mid-meal when we prefered the window and the lighting across the room). more

Le Happy or Les Miserable? 8/11/2010

Let me start by saying that the food, while small in portion, has been good each time I've been here. This particular time it was not the food, but the pretentious service that requires me to share the experience. We recently had out of town guests and wanted to take them to a cool Portland eatery. We gave Le Happy the honor of bringing our guests here, much to our later dismay. There are two separate issues, the first having absolutely no excuse: The waitress handed my boyfriend's vegetarian dish to our one guest, who proceeded to eat about half of it before he realized that it was not his. He then gave it to my bf. The waitress then brought his correct dish and when he asked her if it was the chicken crepe he ordered she confirmed it was. When we told her that she had mistakenly given him my bf's food earlier, she responded, ""Oh well."" We all sat there with our jaws dropped for a spell. The second issue, which began upon arrival, was that as a party of four we did not want to sit right next to the front door and asked if we could move to the four top across the way. This four-top had a two-top next to it that they told us they needed to keep clear if they had a six party come in. The place was about half full. Later, before our dishes arrived, and after more people left, another friend called to say she would be joining us. We then asked once more if we could move to the other table, explaining that we had a fifth person coming. The waiter told us that she could ""comfortably"" sit at the end of our table -- a side that had legs right under the edge and would have prevented anyone without knee guards from being ""comfortable."" Their motto seems to be ""keep imagined customers happy and make the ones that are here miserable with our self-righteous attitudes."" more

cutest place ever! 1/19/2010

the absolutely most adorable little bar that has a little disco ball, sexy red lights, romantic floral artwork on walls and ceiling, late night hours, and best crepes ever. Pros: amazing crapes and wine, open late Cons: some may think it is dark more

Crepe Savor 12/11/2008

One of the best places I've ever been to. The dinner and dessert crepes come in different varieties. I ordered one of each, brought them home, ate them cold, and they were STILL delicious! I would say out of uniqueness, price, and quality, I would give this my highest rating. The service was attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is similar to Montage; dim, candle-lit, romantic or a late-night setting. It is again under the highway, in a little shack of a place you wouldn't look twice at. You'll leave thinking you know some place special no one else does. Pros: Inexpensive, delcious Cons: You've never heard of it more

Delectable crepes, attentive staff 9/3/2008

The savory crepe, faux vegan was divine. The creme fraiche was a bit too much, but it melded perfectly with the mushrooms and spinach. The time it took to order to table was waaaay too long. It took about 30 minutes. Really? It only takes 3 minutes to cook a crepe. Oh well, it was worth the wait. The service was attentive and refilled our drinks quickly and had genuine mini-conversations. Pros: quality of food, options and price Cons: The wait more

It makes me le happy 12/21/2007

Came in a a cold weeknight with some friends who had been before. Just wanted some cocktails and dessert crepes. It certainly owned up! I can't remember the name of my cocktail (they need to post their cocktail menu on their website) but I know it had Chambord and 2 other liquors in it... delicious. And I was craving un Chocolat Banane crepe and it did the trick (but now that I'm writing about it I need another)!\r Also enjoyed their game selection and we noticed after a while that everyone else in there was also playing a game - what fun!\r \r The atmosphere at le happy is cozy and warm (love the red walls and burst of flowers over the bar) and it was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Pros: cocktails, um - crepes!, games/atmosphere more

I never had a chance to try the food 9/20/2007

My family and I had been recommended to dine at Le Happy. When we entered the restaurant to dine the music they were playing was Grunge at full throttle level. We had looked forward to a good meal but we could not hear each other talk. When I asked the waitress how the music choice was made she stated it was their choice. I asked her if she would turn it down a little and she agreed that she would. It took a while for her to turn it down. By that time my family and I were doing pretty well by communicating with sign language. Eventually she turned it down to a dull roar. We thought maybe we would sit outside but it was cold and the freeway traffic echoed quite loudly so, we decided to try another place. Le Happy's attitude seemed very similar to ""The Stepping Stone Cafe's"" moto ""You Eat Here Because We Let You."" I choose not to. more

Very delicious! Great atmosphere. 6/28/2007

What a great place to have a bite. The space is small and cozy, and we found the service to be very warm and friendly. But the crepes....oh my! So delicious! I ate the champignon with cremini mushrooms and gorgonzola, and my date ate the carmelized onions with goat cheese. I added a half a steak and a salad, and the steak was cooked perfectly. And, the cocktails are perfect. Really stiff and well made. My only regret was that we didn't have any room for dessert! Oh well, next time! Pros: Delicious food, great atmosphere, friendly staff more

Great Crepes, Terrible Service 3/21/2007

I'm teetering on whether to give this place a good review, or a terrible one.... \r \r \r I've been going to Le Happy for the past year and a half every few months or so. I always love the atmosphere, which is really cozy, dark and romantic. Their drinks and crepes are probably some of the best you can get in town. (Trust me, I went to Chez Machin, and I couldn't even swallow one of theirs....) And the service, USED to be quite good! There is/was a great waiter there who is always super friendly and helpful and who I hope to get when I visit.\r \r \r Now they made an unfortunate mistake by hiring a new ""too-cool-for-school"" waitress (their only waitress I believe) who has made every visit miserable. Its turned from ""Le Happy"" to ""Le Painful"". \r \r \r After sitting at our table for about 20 minutes with no water, no menus, no trace of getting any service-- nothing-- I decided to get up from my chair and kindly ask the waitress (who was hanging out by the bar) if we could at least see menus. I got a venimous lashing from her telling us that she was busy and that we should just ""HOLD ON"". I looked around to see if we were the only ones getting this treatment. No... it was pretty consistent. Every table was barren, or completely full of empty plates and glasses. There were looks exhanged by neighboring tables and lots of finger drumming. \r \r \r SO, to not end on a bad note. I absolutely LOVE this place. They play great music, the atmosphere is perfect and their crepes and drinks are always amazing. They just need to either a) hire more servers or b) medicate and/or fire the terrible waitress they have working there now.\r \r \r I'm definitely holding off recommending it to anyone until they do something about this. Pros: ambience, food Cons: bad service more

APALLINGLY awful service 2/22/2007

despite what this site reports, le happy does not take reservations for large parties - or, they will before 6p or after 10p which is to say, effectively, why bother?\r a party of 7, we took our chances and actually got a table fairly easily. \r the most amazingly rude hipster waitress (friday 02/16, 7ish pm) served only half our table water. ages later she took our order. over an HOUR later five of us were served, the remaining two waiting another 20 awkward minutes, with not a single apology or semblance of regard for the situation. service101: that is completely unacceptable. \r when the bill came, she flippantly informed us that large parties are automatically charged an 18% gratuity, which was never stated otherwise though perhaps it was written in teeny type on the menu in the dim candlelight and we missed it. clearly her theory was - why work for your big fat undeserved tip or care for your customers when it's a large party since it's a given you'll get it? \r rather enraging...\r then it took her something like 20 solid minutes to return with our change and charge slips, making us late to fetch a friend at the airport...all this on a friends' birthday celebration dinner... \r while the food is consistently good, the service makes it an overwhelmingly negative experience. more

Small, dark, and scrumptious! 10/24/2006

We went to Le Happy for the first time last night and had a thoroughly pleasant meal. We arrived around 6pm and so were able to enjoy a nice happy hour (5-7pm, mon-thurs) which included $1 off most drinks and a savory crepe special. The service wasn't quick, but we weren't in a hurry, and as the food was wonderful, a little extra time to enjoy our drinks was just fine. The astmosphere is a mixture of modern and retro including hundreds of snapshots of the opposite se* in the bathrooms. Of the four crepes we enjoyed, our favorite by far was Le Champignon. We highly recommend this restaurant for a cozy romantic dinner. Pros: Food, Ambience, Happy Hour more

le happy, me happy, ye happy, we happy 9/11/2006

Take imagination, humor, good ingredients, and turn crepes upside down. Nice on every level--friendly to all, fine for a rare meal alone but always designed for small crowds. Incredible staff, including one who has been there longer than forever and another who sat down with us and sampled a customer designed recipe and pronounced it good. It's just quirky enough to make out of towners feel they've eaten in Portland proper, but also savvy to carrying Paper and keeping artists in business. Pros: bon appetit more

Magnifique! 5/30/2006

Le Happy is great. It's very small, but therefore romantic. It's not as highbrow as you'd expect from the website. A lot of hipsters hang out, and I felt a bit overdressed. But the food is amazing. Try the goat cheese and caramalized onion crepe--you won't be disappointed. And be sure to save room for any of the dessert crepes--sinfully delicious and worth every calorie. A unique experience. Definitely great! more

Love Le Happy 1/23/2006

I have been to Le Happy many times and it is always a treat. Yum, yum, yum -- always!Their dessert crepes are delicious and fair priced for what you get. It's a great place to go with friends, or for dessert on a date. The only qualm is the small space. One Saturday night, my girls and I waited 45 minutes for a table, and because space is limited, we stood by the door, hovering (as it felt) over people eating their meal. Very uncomfortable. The service is always surperb and friendly. Don't miss out on the stacks of board games in the hall. Uno is especially fun by candlelight. Pros: Delicious crepes, Friendly service, Great Ambiance Cons: Size, Parking more

Busy, Good Food, A Little disorganized 1/3/2006

Place was hopping at 9:30pm on a Monday night! Good crepe's, although portion size was a bit small for what they were charging - delicious though. Nice staff, if a bit distracted. Hip and happening crowd. Kids allowed and no smoking before 10pm, no kids and smoking allowed after 10pm. Very small place. Sat at a bar they had in the back. Creative cocktail menu too. Pros: High quality food, Nice ambience Cons: Smoking after 10, Can be Noisy, No parking more

therein lies it's charm 5/4/2005

Le Happy may not be for everyone, but I love it. the space is small but beautiful. the service is slow but good. the portions are small but the quality is excellent. a great laid-back place to hang out with a few friends. more

Challenge! 3/3/2005

I challenge the frenchcuisineexpert to eat 5 or 6 crepes @ Le Happy. If the expert can indeed eat them all this expert must also be a blue ribbon award winner at local pie and hotdog eating contests. So, if you prefer to eat from the trough please do avoid Le Happy. more

Come here on your first date or your fifth anniversary. It is a fun and sexy restaurant that can give you a perfect experience. Don't take the place too seriously, just sit back and enjoy! Pros: great drinks, romantic more

Hidden gem 7/30/2004

I ended up here at the recommendation of a friend. WOW. Enormously fun, some crepes were excellent, others were just good, but the entire experience was outstanding. The drinks were all excellent too-one ginger + gin cocktail in particular. I had a cherry vanilla martini-also good. Kind of like SE meets NW. Very truly cool place. Pros: food, fun servers, ambiance more

top notch 4/1/2003
