Bikram/Hot yoga is a wonderful and powerful kind of yoga. Followed as Bikram dictates it can be a soothing and life-balancing style of yoga. I am a student who has attended Bikram studios all over the country and can compare and contrast readily. \r
Hot Yoga Nashville has a great space - it's clean, there's lots of room and it's easy to park, etc. It's too bad that the owner, Cassie, can't keep staff around to keep the place balanced. She is an erratic woman and I can imagine, difficult to work for. The rotation of staff members is high and once a teacher gets trained and comfortable, she quits or gets fired. As a yoga student it's frustrating at best. Tone, cadence and friendly dialog are key skills for a good teacher. It takes time to gain those skills. \r
Because of the location, the studio caters to Vandy students. There are specials and discounts for all the kids being sent to a private university, most likely paid for by their parents. Class times revolve around student class schedules. What about the permanent Nashville residents? What about those of us who pay to attend year-round? Several year-round HYN students pay by the year - approximately $1200 - up front. Don't those students deserve, at the very least, workable class schedules during the summer considering we've already paid the studio for a particular schedule? The classes change constantly. For those people with children, jobs and families, it's annoying to have to reschedule because the owner seems to change her mind every 3 months or so as to when class times should be. \r
Yoga should be calming. HYN is clouded in drama amongst the teaches, some students and Cassie. It really is a shame as there have been several great teachers there (including Cassie, when she wants to be) including PJ (when Cassie isn't berating her), Amy, Katie, Ann, Julie, Kirsten, Chaye, Tabitha and Sandra. \r
I doubt things will change any time soon. It's an OK place. Just don't expect much teacher consistency or good karma.
Pros: Parking, Space
Cons: Ambience, Teacher Retention, Class Times
