I could say not the best steak but it's already good for a great meal. I also admire the service and the kindness of their staffs. Affordable and great location. more

I ate at he Zona Rosa location on New Years Eve. Had a bone-in cowboy ribeye--my favorite steak. Wife had the filet and daughter had medallions with sauce. My steak came out room temperature at best. The bone and the exterior was tepid to the touch--almost cool. Not even close to hot. At an Outback, I probably would have let it pass but this is a $39 steak so I sent it back. What's more, my daughters sauce on her steak was almost cold to the touch. And that also went back. Waitress took it back and a short guy in a red shirt came out (kitchen manager?), not to apologize but to say they grudgingly will cook my another steak but proceeded to tell me I'm wrong and lecture me on what a medium rare steak is. I spent over 100 days on the road last year eating in the best steak houses around the country--Eddi e V's/Austin, Manny's/Minn, Ruth Cris ect--and I have never sent back food. Because the steaks were always hot to the touch with a wonderful char on the outside and a cool red center. This was tepid with no char and rare all the way thru. It was hard to eat. And the quality of meat was questionable. Nothing special at all. So that on top of the lecture not only made me extremely disappointed but angry as well. They brought me a new steak that was fresh off the grill but rare thru and thru and my daughters was overcooked. They don't know how to cook a steak and as i said I've eaten in the top places and know that medium rare is a bit different in every restaurant but this is ridiculous. But being late for a party, we just ate our food and left. No discount off the bill just subpar food and an idiot who somehow felt compelled to lecture customers. This is a small step about Outback and 3X the price.. Our bill came to $180 for 3 with no alchohol. A joke. Save you money and buy a steak from Hyvee. more

Did not even get asked if we wanted dessert??? The old Hereford House was a KC trademark. Steaks are only average now. Service is TERRIBLE. And value for price is awful. Don't waste your time trying to entertain out of town guests. Go for BBQ or to any of the other fabulous steak houses in KC. Pros: NOTHING Cons: value, SERVICE, price, quality...need I continue more

My wife and I dined at the downtown location a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it...as we have every time we've eaten downtown. The steaks were flavorful, good texture and the sides were enjoyable as well. ..especially the cheesy potatoes. Probably my main complaint with downtown is that it is loud and not intimate. Still...that led to a conversation with our neighbors...from Houston...who seemed to enjoy the meal as well. That wouldn't have happened in a ""quieter"" venue. Haven't been to K.City for 3-4 years, so I returned to H.House for dinner tonight, with great memories of what it ""used to be"". I was extremely dissapointed. I should have realized when there was no wait (without reservations) on a Friday night at 7 p.m., something must have changed. ( I can recall lines of patrons even during mid-week several years ago). The salad dressings were still very good as I remembered, but everything else was far less than average: Steak (Strip Med-Rare) was not a good cut of meat, nor was it served sizzling hot as in days gone by, the twice-baked potatoes had obviously been prepared early this morning (NOT fresh) and overcooked until hard and flavorless, the bread was cold and stale. The waitress who made a point of not writing down our orders, (proud to show she could remember everything exactly), forgot to ever bring some ""fresher"" bread after we requested it, and my iced tea glass remained thirsty for a refill for at least 10 minutes after the entree was served. If someone has told you what a great steakhouse this was, they are correct- it once WAS a very good place. Sadly to say, it has changed totally- Save yourself the dissapointment and select another place. more

Downtown location is the best. Still a VERY good steak. Service is sharp, smart and friendly while maintaining a midwestern charm of sorts. PRICES continue to AMAZE as they are easily $15 less than comparable steaks in any other major city. I really feel comfortable here and welcomed all while enjoying some pretty good meat. My husband and I have travelled the US, eating at Steakhouses all across the country, From Peter Lugers in NY to Charley's in Florida and The Chop House in Chicago. We came to Herford house on a friend's recommendation. Great service, nice decor and the menu had a lot to chose from. I ordered the Kansas city strip medium rare. It came out medium well, was touch and had too much grisell. We did not really have time to wait for another. The housemade Italian dressing tasted like cole slaw dressing with extra sugar. The twice baked potatoes were dry and flavorless. I ordered the Portabello mushroom appetizer in garlic butter which was rushed to the table, barely cooked. My husband had lobster which was rubbery. The chocolate desert was the best part of the meal, but you can get good desert anywhere. I wouldn't recommend Hereford house to anyone. 5 oz. piece of over done (med.) ordered rare! and three 40 count shrimp ( overcooked also) for 27 dollars-you have got to be kidding! they were not. I have not been back since!!!! I really expected more, after the build up by hotel staff. I live in a small town outside of Chicago, and we have several restaurants locally that I feel are better than the Herford House. I was disapointed, especially after being told of Kansas City's rep for excelent steak houses, and if the critic who listed the Hereford as number one really thinks so, than I wonder about what qualifies him / her as a food critic??? I have eaten at the Hereford House several times with family and friends because of its reputation. Each time I was terribly disappointed with the quality of my steak. The service was a bit slow, but they were busy. None of the steaks ordered by my party were worth the drive, let alone the price. Cons: , slow service more

We found the food outstanding. Perhaps one of the best prime rib and filets available in the area. Excellent value. more

We love the Hereford House. It is affordable for the whole family. They have kids menus, Sunset dinners for when you just want a lite dinner and not to mention Prime Rib lovers Sunday. I do not know what the guy was belly aching about the Capital Grill being best...You have to save for a year to eat there!! Hereford House is Best!! Keep up the great work! Hereford House should not be #1. They don't deserve or honor this status. It's a regular joint if you ask me, nothing special at all about Hereford House. I do remember one time a co-worker and I went to the downtown location for lunch. We walked in and were told they can not serve parties of 4 or less because is was National Secretaries Day. So in turn they rejected our business because it was not in their favor. As a KC Native, I will never go to another Hereford House because of this incident. I personally would choose any other steak house then Hereford's. Sure it may be convenient for the downtown workers but since I work almost a block from it, I've found many great restraints like Jack Stack or even Tanners Bar & Grill. This restaurant has really changed, the food is rarely hot, the steaks are hit and miss, and the service is just OK, it feels like no one cares if you are there or not, and if anything, it's a problem you are there at all. Since they have expanded the quality and care that they had been know for has really disappeared. If you're wanting a steak and great service where they act like they want you there, try somewhere else. Cons: cold food, poor service more

These restaurants have really gone down hill since they hurried to open so many and the owner has left. The management, customer service and quality is terrible, each restaurant is entirely different in attitude. Years ago you could count on a staff that was happy to see you and make sure your meal was the best it could be, now a yawn greets you at the door as you are shooed away and told to wait. They used to serve a great special early dinner menu but that isn't available, unless you ask for it. I find it suprising, if not dismaying, that Hereford House is ranked the highest for Steakhouses in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Fiorella's (Commonly known as Jack Stack) is far better than anything at the Hereford House. The Hereford House's presentation of their food is horrible, (the sight of their salads are pathetic -- wilted lettuce, terrible tomatoes, etc.). As a native Kansas Citian, I would choose Jack Stack in a heartbeat. more

My wife and I went to Hereford to celebrate our new found knowledge that we would be parents. When we told the waiter, he tracked down a bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice to help us celebrate. It's hard for us to choose any other steakhouse with that kind of service. more
