We went there tonight for my son's 10th birthday. Service was great so was the food. Our waitress Jenny was on top of it. I highly recomend this place!!

I very much agree with ""a disgusting dead animal smell in the lobby of the restaurant."". If they change location I might try them again. more

Birthday from HELL 1/30/2011

WORST EVER !!! We went to hana japan in dublin for my wifes birthday, we waited (standing) for 45min past our reservation forced to buy watered down drinks. The waiting area was disgusting, smelly and small, my 5yr old daughter said it smelled like low tide as we walked in. Seating was bad for 2 couples that had to sit around a big pole and not next to thier spouse on both sides. They charged for soda refills 3$ each, my wife ordered the NY Steak & lobster and @ 1st look the lobster tail shell was sickly looking and fishy smelling, needless to say my wife took 1 small bite and it was putrid and had another family member taste it and they spit it out and sait it was spoiled and my wife ran to the bathroom to throw up. The cook has prepared hundreds of lobster tails how could he NOT know it was spoiled and prepared it anyway. When we told the waitress she said it would removed from the bill and said at least you ate for free - ARE YOU KIDDING ME - WHAT A JOKE - This is how we were treated after a 344$ bill and a forced 17% gratuity - for poor service - My wife got sick again in the parking lot when we left. THE WORST BIRTHDAY PARTY EVER - THIS PLACE MUST BE SHUT DOWN ASAP - DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY !!!!!!!!!!!!1 more

love this place 11/22/2010

I have been eating at Hana Japan since I was a child... this has been the place for our family for birthday's and other celebrations. I really want to address the comment about 100 bar glasses being washed in 5 minutes. Having been a bartender for a while and having worked at a restaurant with a '3 sink' washing system, I know how it goes. First off, no person can wash 100 dishes that fast with this method. And there are three sinks, 1 with soapy water, one with plain water and the third with sanitizer and water. So therefore the glasses are being sanitized and it is ridiculous for someone to post something like hat. If the restaurant were that 'dirty' they wouldn't be open for business, as all restaurants have visits from the health inspectors. DUH. Love the chefs here and love the food. Hands down my favorite restaurant. And japanese food does leave an interesting smell on your clothes...so of course the restaurant is going to smell like that. But it's amazing food, and we will continue to eat here! more

Go Elsewhere. 10/19/2010

This restaurant is hands down the worst value in the entire tri valley. Incredibly low grade meat, incredibly poor management and staff and a disgusting dead animal smell in the lobby of the restaurant. All for the price of upwards 40 dollars a head. The food is neither authentically Japanese, nor does it attempt to be anything more than mediocre. This would be fine if this place was some dive where you pay 6.95 a plate, but they have the audacity to charge 30.00 minimum for a meal comprised of frozen shrimp, meat and vegetables that could not cost them more than 1.50 a head. Not only is the food terrible, there is an odor in the lobby that literally smells like an animal died in the walls. This is not an exaggeration or hyperbole, it literally smells like rotting flesh. Other reviews of this fine establishment also mention the smell. Avoid this place like the plague, if you want decent teppanyaki in the tri valley check out Yanagi over in Dublin, or better yet head over to somewhere in the East Bay or San Francisco. more

horrible experience 10/18/2010

Came here with the family for my sisters birthday this weekend, and we were sadly disappointed. Even with reservations, expect to wait another 30 minutes in the foul smelling, cramped lobby. Once we were finally sat, we were elbow to elbow at the table. Chefs were slightly amusing but the food lacked any flavor. Service was below average. For the next family get together, we will be going elsewhere. more

Hana japan response to ""Swine Flu Virus"" 9/7/2010

I would rather not rate myself but I am responding to a posting. I am the General Manager of Hana Japan Steak House, and I am responding to the allegations of a previous poster. Our restaurant has been a popular local institution for over 30 years. Hana Japan has prided itself with the exemplary quality of our cuisine, our exciting and entertaining style of service which is Family oriented within a friendly environment. We have thrived during the past 3 decades by building relationships with thousands of regular customers. Based on the complaints of poster ?Swine Flu Virus? and the date with which the poster wrote this post, I am fairly certain I know who this person is. And without getting into specific details, this is a former customer who had a personal axe to grind with our management and certain staff members. Regretfully, this former customer has decided to take their issue onto the Internet and make libelous remarks about Hana Japan Steak House. Regarding the poster?s suggestions that our restaurant is not sanitary, if what this poster claimed is true, then not only would we have gone out of business years ago, but we would be awash in lawsuits from sick customers. We have never had any issues involving food poisoning or guest illness in our restaurant. It is a shame that someone would try to poison the reputation of Hana Japan by anonymously posting virulent rants against a respected and popular restaurant. Jong-Ki Yoon more

Don't waste your time or money 9/1/2010

The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars is that the drinks were very good. I've been going to this place on & off for at least 10 years & it used to be good. We went there last night to celebrate a birthday dinner & were shocked at the prices-it's been a year but $4 increase???! for entrees.???! I ordered the halibut-shrimp combination as I have before & was shocked when I got the bill-it was $40!!!!!Of course I went up & questioned it as I hadn't ordered the lobster after all. Apologies were done & the bill adjusted by $10-but still $30 for this??? The quality & quantity are really sad-this used to be a great place to go. We ate early & I should have paid attention as there was only 1 other table of people. As the evening wore on, it got more crowded for a Wed.evening. more

STOP!!!! HEALTH HAZARD DO NOT KILL YOURSELF!!!!!!! 12/14/2009

This place is uniquely GROSS and absolute FILTH!!! They DO NOT SANITIZE THEIR DISHES. I repeat, THEY DO NOT SANITIZE THEIR DISHES. THEY DO NOT SANITIZE THEIR DISHES. I became suspicious from the outside and even more by the inside appearance. I sat and watched the bartender dipping the glasses in dirty BACTERIA filled water for less than 3 seconds before sending them back out for use again. He did this while no one was at the bar except myself. The waitress gave him several trays of glasses at a time. He then washed over 100 hundred glasses in less than 5 minutes in the same water. SPARE YOURSELF THE MEDICAL BILLS, DISEASE, OR WORSE. YOU WILL REGRET going to a place like this!!! IT NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN!!!! Cons: PURE GARBAGE...YOUR HEALTH IS AT RISK! more

Not a good pick. 9/11/2009

This restaurant, used to be one of my favorite. The chefs were amazing; doing tricks with food and utensils. It provided loads of entertainment for my family. Their food was great, loads of flavor and a good blend. However, just recently, my sister and I, and the family, headed to Hana Japan to celebrate our twin birthdays. Apparently, only ONE of us could use a birthday discount and it was only for the fried rice. Later on, my family decided to split some dishes, and we were told that to split a dish between two people, we had to pay a ten dollar fee, which was unnecessary. The portion would even remain the same, and splitting the food would take away all the other discounts. It was something never mentioned. Afterward, the manager was very rude and uncaring. Later, I quickly realized that the food was actually COATED in butter, making it unhealthy. Overall, I do not recommend this restaurant. Pros: Good entertainment, good tasting food. Cons: High prices, must pay to split a dish, many catches. more

Worst Experience in 60 Years! 7/30/2009

This was by far the worst dining experience of my life. Birthday Party of 12 people. Prices were unbelievably high, surrounding was filthy, grill wasn't hot enough to cook the food properly, I could go on & on. I took in Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Cake for our celebration. They gladly took the box from me at the door to store in their freezer. When the torture of this meal was complete, we requested our cake. They brought the box to the table and explained that we were not allowed to eat this birthday cake in their restaurant!!! So why did they take it in the first place? The inept feeble minded Mr. Manager said it was their policy and even tho they were not busy on a Wednesday evening, they would not allow us to consume the ice cream cake! He couldn't care less even though I brought plates and forks to avoid them using theirs. We had a party of 12, all heading home in different directions with $68.00 worth of ice cream melting in its box! When the final bills were presented, we were in awe with the totals, not to mention mandatory tips for extremely terrible service. If I never go there again it will be too soon. BEWARE ... If in doubt, go home and eat left overs! I am having a difficult time rating this restaurant, there are no marks low enough to be true to this horrific place. Pros: Pros? Absolutely Positively None Cons: Cons? Price, Atmosphere, Lack of Service more

Amazing! 4/10/2009

I love this place. Great food, fun, and service. Free on your birthday too! Highly recommended. more

Yuck 7/19/2008

Went for dinner on a friends b-day. For starters i noticed the place looked real dirty.they need to really work on making the place look decent inside.we waited basically 45 min. for our table and when we got seated our waitress seemed rushed by our seemingly small drink order..I understand it was busy but customer service is customer service. our food seemed rubbery also . guess he over cooked the shrimp and undercooked the steak.the cook was entertaining to watch though i give him that.to make it short we had a horribly memorable time there. its our second and last time we will ever go there. SORRY HANA. Benihanna it is the next time . their cheaper and have a lot more professional customer service . Pros: entertaining to watch the cooks Cons: bad service and pricey below average food more

Most horrible experience EVER!!!! Riddled with disgust by customer service...or lack of! 6/3/2008

Basically, the hostess chewed my sister out and made her cry for asking if we can be seated together. We had reservations for 7:30 but seated at 8:30 which made my grandfather almost leave for he is diabetic and didnt expect to have to wait that long for the table. When I expressed this to the hostess her response was tough. The food was cooked very poor and it was the consciences of all the patrons at the party it was because the staff had an attitude towards us for ?complaining? as we were told by the hostess. When we received the bill, a 17% tip was included that no one felt was earned so we refused to pay the tip and only paid for the food we received. This prompted the bartender to come outside, approach us in such a manner very thug like. He proceeded to un-tuck his shirt and roll up his sleeves as if getting ready to fight and tell us the cops were on the way. Once the officers arrived, we explained the situation to them and were advised although we were justified in our thought process, we still indeed had to pay the 17% gratuity because it was on the menu and we had a party of 6 or large so we paid the difference. I feel they have invented a backdoor operation of collecting 17% gratuity form customers. Guests do not get seated until the table is full regardless if they know each other or not. If 3 different parties of 3 people who do not know each other will be seated together they have 3 different bills, avoiding the higher gratuity charge. Yet if I come with me + 8 and request separate bills we are told no. There is no difference between the 2 other then knowing each other. They charge their guest more money for bringing in business and knowing the people they are dinning with. There is no extra effort put out by the staff or business loss if you seat a party of 8 that knows each other or 2 parties of 4 that do not. Perhaps their gratuity policy should be evaluated. Worst place ever to eat had been goinng there for 7 years too!! what a shame. Pros: cook infront of you.....thats it! Cons: everything else~ more

over crowed at table, food not that good, way over priced, Went there for grand sons birthday, (does anyone go there if there isn't a birthday).. 4/6/2008

over crowed at table,(seven of us shared the table with another young couple) The table is for six, but really five is more suited. More food was thrown around on the cook top, than was eaten. The food was not that good and way over priced, Went there for grand sons birthday, (does anyone go there if there isn't a birthday)..the cook was mexican, not japanese. I believe Japanese wouldn't be seen in this place. Cons: crowded at table, not well lighted (probably for a reason) and food below average more

Horrible!!! 8/3/2007

Hana Japan is about as dirty outside as it is inside. The food was prepared benihana style- right in front of you. What a great show! Too bad their food was of the worst I have EVER had- loaded with oil, butter, and salt. The service was terrible considering the place was almost completely empty (red flag #1). Also, their prices were WAY too high. Considering their location and conditions of the restaurant they should be charging half of what they do. And, after you taste their food- you almost think they should be paying you. Nickel and diming is the one thing they are good at. Sorry Hana Japan- you need to close. Cons: food, service, cost more

I love Hana Japan! 12/7/2006

I think that if you want to have a dinner celebration that this is a great place to do it. Hana Japan is similar to Benihana and is teppan-yaki style where they cook the food on a stove table right in front of you. The thing that I like about Hana is that it is cheaper than Benihana but offers the same kind of food, like shirmp, steak, scallops, filet mignon, lobster and sushi. I go with a classic new york steak and shrimp! Who doesn't like that? I love Hana Japan, but go elsewhere if I am looking for more authentic and diverse menu choices, like sushi, chicken karaage and sashimi. more

Fun place for a great meal 1/1/2006

We have visited Hana Japan several times - to celebrate a birthday and just for dinner out. The food is excellent and is prepared in front of you with quite a bit of a show. They offer a children's menu and are very family friendly. We have had excellent service - never have to ask for a thing. The food is great - especially the shrimp. Pros: Family friendly, Great food, Service Cons: A little pricey more
