2 years ago my car was stolen from the apartment complex where I used to live. I called lots of towing companies, and none had records of my car; I called the state dispatch and there was no record. I filed a police report; they did some legwork - talked to the complex, who had no records of calling a towing company, and to the complex's authorized tower - but no one had records of my car. I should have gone to the DMV and had the title removed from my name that same day, but I didn't.
A year later, out of the blue I get a letter from these people (having moved three times since the apartment complex) that says I owe them $500 for the towing fee plus interest of $150 - for a car that was stolen! Two days later I get another letter, and then don't hear from them. Apparently they made ONE phone call to my parent's house, where my phone number was apparently listed - so I give them a call to try and explain that the car was reported as stolen, there were no records of my car ever being towed, and that a police report had been filed. I also wanted to explain that even if I claimed the charges, there was no way that I could pay them. I'm in college, and there's absolutely no money (as in, my student loans pay for school, books, what shelter I have; my fiance is on food stamps so we can barely afford to eat).
The woman who answered was nasty and rude to say the least. She said there were records in their possession that the car was towed - and practically told me I was lying about it being stolen. When I explained I was in school, and had no money, first she grilled me to the nth degree about how I could pay for things ("if you can afford to ride the bus you can afford to pay your debt"), and then she told me "well why don't you quit school and get a job then?"
She was incredibly rude, snotty, and condescending; reading other people's interactions makes so sense. Even if I could, I am not compelled to pay these people anything after my interaction with their "customer service" rep. Grade: F-
