Thank you everyone for taking the time to leave your thoughts and opinions. As always we appreciate feed back from our customers regardless to whether it being positive or negative. \r \r Thank you for your patience as we move through this positive transition in our new location. Its not an easy feat of moving a business of this nature and can take weeks to months just to relocate. (hint hint...disappearing in the middle of the night is impossible.)\r \r We look forward to this new future before us and to being able to provide a larger selection of animals and equipment for you to choose from.\r \r Happy Reefing\r Greg Best \r Owner\r Cindy Schultz (Best) ;)\r Owner/Manager more

I worked there under both the original owner and the new ownership. The manager (not owner) who is Cindy. She is not honest with people about several issues.\r \r I could go into detail but won't. Do not trust this woman. You will get burned. \r \r Then they up and move secretly one day without telling the dwindling customers. \r \r They are doomed to go UNDER and its going to be terrible for the owner who is a good man.\r \r If he only knew.\r more

Extremely Helpful!!! 7/11/2011

The owner, Cindy, has been absolutely wonderful helping us set up our aquarium. She went out of her way to guide us. She has given us great advice. The store is immaculate and her fish are very healthy. The staff are willing to answer any question and never make you feel dumb for asking. Even though we live over 30 miles away (passing 2 other stores), we will continue to be patrons of Down Under. more

Go their and see how wonderfull they really are 11/10/2010

II have been going to down under for almost a year. The first time I went their they spent 1 and a half hours with me helping me to decide what corals would be best for my set up. I bought nothing that day. They were very nice and willing to help me with whatever questions I had. The next time ?I went in and bought some corals and fish. They have been in my tank for almost a year and have had no problems what so ever. They have kept my tank healthy with all their advice and I haven't lost a single Fish or coral since buying from them. They always ask how my tank is doing when I come in to the store. The Manager is always wonderful and so is all her staff. I am always willing to travel to Garner from Raleigh just for the peace of mind that I am getting good product and advice. If they don't know a answer they will find out for you to the best of their ability. They offer great products, Fish , corals and water . I would highly recommend this saltwater store to all my friends and family. I never have had the costumer service from any other store in the surrounding areas. Hey don't just take it from me though. Go to the store meat the staff and enjoy the atmosphere. You will be quite impressed with the fish the corals and all the products you can get there. more

I love when the same people post multiple times... 3/28/2010

My Con of 'I can't make a short trip out of it' basically means that when I walk in, no less than two of the staff ask how the tank is doing. They all know me, know my tank, and know what I have going on in it. I frequent all of the LFS's and have to say that Cindy, the manager, is absolutely fantastic. She's changed the way the store is run from the prior ownership, and although she doesn't know everything, she's not afraid to tell me that she doesn't know and she'll have to research it. That is something that I will always respect very highly. (I don't do bs well..) Regarding water quality... I've had very small systems, where water quality MUST be perfect as shocking a system can make things go horribly wrong. Measuring with a TDS meter, I've only seen it go up to 5, (yes, I measure every jug), and upon further research, it was because i had not properly rinsed the container after a recent deep water change. (Had two 5 gallon jugs, one measured 1, one measured 5, both acquired same day from DU). As for fish -- They keep them in quarantine for no less than 3 days. If you're not doing a fresh water dip of your fish when you get them regardless of where you bought them, then you should be doing that anyways. The acclimation process described by DU to me is the most time consuming, but least stressful on the fish, that has ever been recommended to me. I highly recommend this store to anybody interested in the hobby, and if you have problems, bring it up, just be open to the fact that it *might* actually be your own doing... Pros: Great selection, clean tanks, personable staff Cons: I can't seem to make a 'short trip' out of it.... more

Great Place to shop 3/25/2010

I have read the previous reviews and am confused. I really wonder if they have even taken the time to actually go to Down Under or if there is a personal issue..... I go to all the stores in the raleigh area and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Fish Room lacks personal attention to customers who are new but carry a great conversation on advanced equipment. Fish world has a lot of fish to choose from but the customer service is not there. Reef Keepers has a nice selection of high end corals but you have to dip everythings for bugs - if your new to the hobby dont go there for help. I personally prefer to shop at down under because it dont matter who you are, they will take the time to talk with you even when they know there is not a sale involved. They do have a couple new people working there that are in the process of learning but they dont hesitate to verify the information they are sharing if they are not sure. New hobbiest have to start somewhere I say, I think its great that they decided to start at a store and that Down under took the risk in bringing them in to train them. Now I will be honest, I do ask for Cindy or Todd when I go in but that is because I am usually in a hurry. I will vouch for the qualty of water at Down Under as be good. I have tested their TDS and it came out at 0, no chlorines either.... so I am confused as to how the other posts are stating the opposite. As one review stated, wouldnt everything be dead in their systems if it were bad?!?!?!? my advice - check the place out yourself and see what the real deal is. Pros: good selection of stock, personable staff Cons: not open mondays more

Doomed To Fail 3/19/2010

To potential customers: I would not recommend going to this store. The customer service is horrible. The previous post is right: you will get burnt. Might as well drive the extra few miles to Fish Room and be happy! Inexperienced and defensive manager will ruin your experience as well as the poor staff training. To the manager: It's really a shame... Everyone I talk to speaks of the horrible customer service they receive. Customer service? That's the backbone of a local fish store! The prices are cheaper online or at petco, but people will pay more for the locality of a store they can trust. If you take away the helpful advice and the customer service, you're left with an expensive store doomed to fail. I would hope that rather than get defensive, ask yourself- why do people feel this way? Once you acknowledge your flaws then you can improve. However if you continue to defend your store you will be doomed to fail as all your business leaves. Remember, the saltwater business isn't about new customers. It's about keeping the old ones. Pros: nice looking frags/show tanks Cons: poor customer service, bad manager more

Prepare to get burnt! 3/19/2010

The store has really gone down hill after the new management. The fish I have bought have been in poor health and 1 even died within days of introduction (keep in mind the tank has been set up 20 years with not a single untimely death in that time!) I contacted the manager to be told the equivalent of it wasn't their problem as it was alive while in their store. Several other enthusiasts report similar events most notably chronic cases of ich coming from the fish. The employees are hit or miss. Some are quiet helpful (possibly the only pro), while others obviously lack in knowledge and will sell you the wrong fish if you let them (don't bother asking if it is reef safe or not). I also found their RO/DI water to have a TDS of 6-7. Wouldn't trust personally. Also, to the review below: TDS of 7 killing fish?!?! Tap water has a tds of 120-130 and fish can live in it (although not recommended). Saying the fish are alive means nothing! Once again another example of the lack of knowledge. Pros: They have fish Cons: Fish in poor health, bad management, low selection more

Down Under Saltwater 3/18/2010

There is nothing wrong with our water. The same water that is made available for purchase is the same water we use on all of our systems. If our water was ""bad"" all of our livestock would be DEAD. Anyone that has been in our store can see that that is not the case. more

Stay Away 2/24/2010

This store used to be good but it was sold a year ago and has gone downhill. They do not value their long term customers and probably not their new ones either. I have heard of several customers who they have sold fish and corals to that were inappropriate to their tanks. A few months ago I had the owner assure me that a gorgonian they had in was easy to care for. I didn't buy it and went home to research it and found it rarely survives more than a year in captivity. I can't tell you if she was mis-informed or just wanted to make a sale but I am glad I didn't trust her. Don't bother buying their RO/DI water it has a TDS of 7. The RO (only) water from Krogers costs half as much and has a far lower TDS of 1. Cons: Not trustworthy; Poor customer service more

Bad Business Experiences! 1/13/2010

I would give this place a 0 star if it would let me. I don't know whats going on over there but they don't have a clue what retail business is about, customer service. Their water wiped out my tank and it tested high for chlorine. This wouldn't have happened if they knew how to make RO water! Not only that, but when I went in to seek service on this, one of my fish was blamed... REALLY??? I've been doing this for over 8 years with success at Aquatica. They claim to have over 20 years experience and yet I know so much more, how is that? Thomas has been the only helpful and knowledgeable guy there to me, but his hands are tied. I won't be going back and I just figured others SHOULD know what to watch for if you do go there. Cons: Poor knowledge, high prices, still not trustworthy more

Bad store to do business with 7/17/2009

I bought a 90 gallon saltwater aquarium and all the the other stuff needed. Spent quite a bit of money. Once Kevins son came to my house to set it up I realized the stand was not made of wood but pressboard. I called Kevin and we ordered a new wood stand. He made me pay for the new stand and the old stand. I was told he would refund my money once he returned the original stand. Well......8 months later, a call to the Better Bus Bur and to my card company I finally received a refund. Cons: not trustworthy more

Friendly atmosphere 10/13/2006

Great place to buy corals and fish, friendly staff good prices. In a nice location easy to get to. Also now provides live food. Pros: Good price Cons: Not a very big store more
