I don't usually write reviews either 2/27/2012

I don't usually write reviews either but hate to see any company wrongly slandered. We've been very happy with DirectBuy. Great prices, really nice people working at the Beaverton office and just to throw in a factoid: They're renewal rate exceeds 80%. I think that's a better testimonial to follow than a group of cranky people. I just saved $300 on a kitchen table and $1000 on a desk for my office. Both of the items were delivered early and were in perfect condition. When we ordered our bedroom furniture and it got damaged in shipping, DirectBuy did a beautiful repair job at no charge. I can't even remember what the damage was now because there's no trace of it left. more

Another very satisfied customer 12/12/2011

I usually don't write reviews but seeing so many negative ones inspiried me to show DirectBuy in a better light. We joined DirectBuy in 2002, reluctantly on my part. But now I only wish we would have joined much sooner. Our motivation was a planned extension to our home, adding a kitchen and dining room. We purchased everything thru DirectBuy, appliances, countertops, windows/treatments, cabinets, fixtures, flooring, probably saved at least $30,000. The staff was extremely helpful and having the luxury of selecting top of the line items was a bonus. Since the completion of the remodel we've bought more windows/treatments, mattresses, furniture and small appliances and will continue to be a member til our buying days are over!! more

Satisfied Member 8/10/2011

I have been a member of Direct Buy for over 20 years. I find the reviews I've read hard to believe. My Daughter and her Husband also joined ten years ago. I have purchased furniture, carpeting, window treatments, small gifts for weddings and Christmas and I have always found the prices to be a LOT less than retail. My last purchase was a double oven and a glass cooktop. They are both Kitchenaid and I DEFINITELY paid less than retail. I was surprised at that as appliances are sometimes the same or if on sale, can be less in the store. The furniture on my patio is all from DB as are the couches in my TV room. I love DB and will always be a member. It's hard to understand how all of these people are so dissatisfied. You can compare prices before joining. I don't see any scamming at all. There really is no worst for me to comment on. You can't beat the prices at Direct Buy on most things. more

Completely Regret Joining 8/19/2010

I completely agree with all of the other reviews 100%. I have nothing new to write but wanted to add to the negative reviews because I am another person who'd been scammed into this membership. Against my better judgment, I joined, thinking we'd save so much money on furniture, shades and windows. We've found that retail is much better in prices for furniture, especially looking online. For windows, our installer could have gotten us similar deals for MUCH LESS hassle and of course 5K up front. The shades prices are no different than other places. But because I paid the exorbitant fee, we are indebted to order the rest of our windows and shades through this place. At least we'll get a tax rebate on them. Business must be poor there because they are now offering 30 days no fee to join. DO NOT JOIN! more

Poor customer service 3/15/2010

Since I became a member of the Portland Directbuy (formerly United Consumers Club & UCC Total home) the service has gone from bad to horrible. Notably since 1996 when the current owner took over. What might appear to be good values purchased through DirectBuy , often isn't that great. The savings they pitch are off manufacture suggested retail prices. But as a quick Google search will show, that?s not the price you will typically have to pay from a traditional retail source. And if you want to order online, in a lot of cases you can do almost as well from a reputable web-store. Pros: small cost savings Cons: paynow & wait /time delays /poor service & customer suport more

Internet Losers 10/8/2009

You do order everything so if you want immediate gratification then pay for it at the stores. They have local policies for resolving customer service challenges. Prices are less than retail sales prices in most circumstances especially on furniture, plumbing products, flooring and cabinets. Not as much savings on cheap electronics or appliances. I had a price complaint on an $1100 Toshiba TV and a week later after speaking with the manufacturer my center gave me an additional $130 discount to beat an internet price by 10%. Pros: Customer Service Policy. Pricing Policy. National Support. Cons: No immediate gratification. more

That's a Sick Game 9/10/2009

Unethical, illegal, and a scam? Folks, this is putting it mildly. Have you ever been into one of their showrooms? It doesn't take more than a moment's glance at their reps to see that all of them have major psychological issues (and I'm not even a therapist!). I got yelled at for entering their showroom! If people in business are not happy and proud of what they have -- yep, you guessed it -- it's a SCAM in every sense of the word. Let's put it this way: none of my friends or family will have anything to do with these people. Legit businesses attract happy, fearless leaders; illegit businesses attract miserable kids all grown up. And don't even mention a $5,000 membership. It's not happening. Even if they put it on sale or give it away for a penny, trust me, these people are not worth your time. They don't deserve even one star - I just had to satisfy the computer. Do your own research, save your money, and live happily ever after. Take the high road. Don't even glance at the train wreck in the ditch. Pros: Adults act like kids Cons: They would rather go to prison than face anyone more

You see the commercials on TV all the time, now Directbuy. 7/18/2008

Everything people are saying about this place is true. (Google them under rip off report dot com, you will find thousands of complaints. In Canada, at the supreme court level). Please know, this is a 100% pyramid-like scheme. I worked for this company for a few years during summers, embarrassed to say. I was working my way through college and I chalk the experience up to a social experiment. People if you sign up, everything they do is unethical, but actually legal. Unless you get anything in writing (either you should be an attorney or bring one with you), you are out thousands of dollars. They are in this to make money off your membership, they do not want to help you buy products at a lower price. Come on, the old saying, if it's too good to be true....it is. Direct Buy is probably one of the most aggressive scams in the country. Only thing you can do to stop them is spread the word. more

AKA DIRECT BUY (or DIRECT SCAM) 1/24/2008

I'm glad I never bought into Direct Buy. Although I unfortunately submitted information to them right after buying my home. I was warned not to fall victim from a co-worker who paid the exorbitant $5000 membership and found himself wedged into a deal that wasn't so great. After several months of ignoring their mailers and phone calls which were from a foreign call center. How do I know this? I receiving calls from a certain set of 503 phone numbers I did a reverse lookup online for free to find out that it was linked to Global Crossings, a company that routes for foreign call centers. So deciding I only wanted to be entertained by their marketing scheme, I signed up for my free showroom tour and to receive a key in the mail that may open up the lock that would enable me to win a $50,000 home makeover or $50k in cash. They also were offering 2 other complimentary prizes for showing up. The smallest of the five prizes was a $20 cash prize and a ""free"" vacation which I assumed already was probably a timeshare leading trip. I immediately wanted to see this scheme first hand. So I signed up to see a presentation. When I got to the showroom in Beaverton, there were mainly older people and individual blue collar workers who probably couldn't afford to pay $5000. There were a couple of professional looking people like myself who appeared they would be good targets. So after the presentation of videos, speeches by the salesman, and the quick showroom where you couldn't see any of the prices, everyone was strategically split up among tables where they couldn't talk to other groups/couples. I played the consumer who was seemingly interested in the program, so I was left for last. After I played the ""hesitant"" role, I declined the offer and then presented the key and card I had gotten in the mail. At this point the guy was furious because everyone was smart enough to walk out. Of course my key didn't work, but I got $20 in cash and a ""free"" vacation. Very entertaining! Pros: Creative Marketing Scheme Cons: $5000 membership, Secretive Pricing on Items in Showroom, Salesman more

The worst experience 6/18/2007

Ucc total home has many names, directbuy is now their name. We paid over 4thousand dollars for a membership and got nothing for it. All they want is your membership fees and you can not get a refund. I can not understand why people haven't complained to someone of power. They told us they could get us quotes on everything once we were members. They lied about everything. Our quotes were late coming (20 days to be exact) and much higher than they originally promised. Please AVOID Direct Buy unless you have money to waste. You will not get discounted items, the other reviews are telling the truth. Pros: ZERO Cons: Membership is not what is promised. Horrible service, rude and high pressure tactics to get you to buy! more

Fiasco!!! Directbuy aka UCC Totalhome 8/4/2006

Walked in after searching for new appliances and cabinets for our kitchen remodel, we thought this place was the answer to our prayers. Ended up being a waste of time and a nightmare. They wouldn't let us leave, we had to sit through a 2 hour presentation, which felt more like an interrogation. After shelling out $4,000 we were well on our way to saving, right? WRONG! We had such a hard time working with them and getting our orders we lost more time and money. Agree with the other posters, the shipping is a killer. They are so crafty about adding to the bottom line, we thought we were being mugged. I doubt we will ever recoup our losses, but to save others the hassle I want to post this as a wake up call, for all to AVOID. There is hope: I am working on a local or national news program to do an undercover story on these guys, will be quite entertaining and detrimental to their con-artisan business. Cons: Very costly, disorganized, don't give you the whole story more

Welcome to Oregon? 6/9/2006

This was our first experience with one of these ""businesses"". I guess they figured because we are from the mid-west and retired that we are gullable. Well, they offer discounts on all the stuff for your house (we were building our dream house) including referrals for the labor. We planned on spending over $200k, and it was the biggest hassle to get some help and cooperation. Everything was late, damaged, mis-communicated and prices were dishonest. Kept telling us the handling and freight charges had gone up. Never got a straight answer out of them and they kept referring to the written contract. Yep, anything they say to your face aint in the agreement. If it aint on paper-you don't get what you were quoted. Anyway, we pulled out, took our losses (membership fees and crummy cabinets-went into the garage). We promise to NEVER go back and put the word out to everyone. True, they changed their name many times, and they are NOT a ""direct buy"", everything was indirect, false promises, dishonest and not worth another breath. Where I come from, these folks would be outta business in a flash. These people running this joint are oxygen theives! Ruined our ""Oregon is a nice place"" to come live. Pros: Can't think of a one Cons: yep they're cons alright more

Come on people!!!! It's not that bad..... 6/7/2006

...It's worse! Really, for service we give it a huge ""not recommended"". For honesty (if it were a category): highly NOT recommended to the 10power, and for quality: below average. They do have some nice stuff in the cataloges, but it's mostly fake wood furniture and scratch and dent pieces (when it comes). We did manage to use our membership, unlike the other people, but would have spent the same at the stores, with the included shipping. I did like the variety, they have some stuff that other stores in the local area can't get. But we did not re-coupe our monies, so it was a huge financial loss. We sent back a ""scratched"" item and had to pay shipping both ways. It was a huge argument, but not worth keeping a piece of junk table, so we got some refund, but they kept the $280 for our paid shipping both directions. All I can say is this: if you go in there, do it as an experiement, and resist their mind control! Pros: parking, pretty coloured catalogues Cons: the whole enchilada! more

What a nightmare 5/12/2006

I got suckered into their grand program, they promised me the world (wholesale prices for everything to build my dream house)-and did not deliver. They tell you that you only have this one opportunity when you say you want to think about it. If you leave today without signing up, you won't ever get back in. So, I signed up. I tried to make use of their savings and they were of no help. I tried to order ""discount"" furniture and when the shipping, fees and other charges were added, it was almost double retail! They only want the membership fees and do NOT offer any real discounts or service. Also, they changed their name 3 times now. Sounds like real problems, running from something. Hope it catches up soon with them.! Avoid UCC and DirectBuy and their other names, please. Very well calculated scheme! I'll give them that. Pros: none, great scheme Cons: fees, , contract , program more

Terrible 1/23/2006

I joined this place with so many promises made to me. I never bought anything there because I always found it cheaper at retail stores. When I informed them of this, they just said that is what the manufacturers charge. I asked for a refund and they laughed. Their staff had no idea what is going on at all more

Not what they advertise 5/18/2004

We bought a membership to find out we could buy upscale furniture and other items, but it actually costs more. They don't tell you about their shipping and freight charges, they are higher than UPS and post office, plus additional fees. We got suckered! I don't have one good thing to say about this place, but I feel the public should be aware of it! Also, people who worked there had no idea, each person says something different depending upon the day and who you talk with! Cons: , not worth the $$, dishonest more
