Horrible, horrible, horrible treatment by one of the staff 1/13/2012

The night started off great. Great music and two large reserved tables of 16 friends, all professionals in our late 30's and early 40's. We had really good service from our servers and we enjoyed the music for two hours. Towards the end of the night, when 1/3 of their crowd left, three of us were standing near the bar. In this place, this is a MAJOR, MAJOR no no. You cannot stand anywhere in this place without a lecture from this old lady, not even in the empty bar! It's one thing to be talked to with respect (e.g., ""thanks for coming out tonight, I know it's emptying out, but would you please step over here to talk."") but it's another to be treated like crap from a classless, rude, hag that lectures you as a child. Zero respect and zero attempt to be addressed as an adult. This person was so rude, we had another patron in his 60's witness the unbelievable interaction and come up to us and say ""what a f'n bitch."" After our the scolding, we moved to a side table, away from our large group, and sat down. After we settled up with our servers, two of us stood up to put our coats on to leave. MISTAKE!! The old lady was immediatelty in our face angry again. And I mean angry. Again, zero customer service and zero respect. Go there for the music. We really enjoyed the show. Our servers did a great job. Expext to be yelled at and treated like death-row cattle if you ever stand somewhere in this joint. If you enjoy watching people get worked-up, I encourage you to stop over and stand in the bar for a 'delightful' interaction with a joyless, rude woman. She's really is in the wrong role, and because of her, we will never be back. more

Mellow out over lunch.... 3/7/2011

Fantastic food, splendid service, awesome ambiance! Lunch was a test run. Dakota passed with soothing elegance. The club layout is impressive with openness of a New Orleans street cafe. The exposed brick warmed the space. Michael was assisted by the rest of the staff and the service just kept flowing as did the recorded jazz. The burger was done perfectly and very tasty. The perfect dessert: vanilla ice cream, coffee and Benedictine finished off my two hour stay. Dinner will be next...soon. My sincerest thanks for a pleasant experience. CC more

Great Jazz Great Food 11/30/2010

I have enjoyed the food and music at the Dakota for years. Whether it is a light dinner in the bar or the full deal in the restaurant I have always been pleased. The intimate environment for jazz is awesome. more

Serious Music, Get Serious About the Food 7/31/2010

Having read mixed reviews about the Dakota's Restuarant, my wife and I went on a Saturday night in July.\r After being seated in the upstairs portion of the dining room, we were promptly greeted by the waite staff. That was the only prompt event of the evening. Our Hendricks Martinini (Up) arrived warm. We then placed our 3 course menu order.\r After some delay, the first course arrived. The Mushroom Tart was acceptable, the Scallops forgettable. 1 hour later, 90 minutes after placing it, our main course arrived. The Halibut was fit for airplane food. The Ravioli even worse.\r Sensing our disappointment, the wait staff explained that the kitchen space was much too small for the venue."" The staff worked miracles every night just to get the food out"".\r Under such circumstances, why not acknowledge it is a Jazz Club, serve drinks and bar food, and forget about trying to be a dining destination. Pros: Good Music Cons: Fogettable Food more

Not a great experience 6/17/2010

I am an A train member - the low end, but one none the less. I go to concerts at the Dakota about three times a month and generally have a good experience. Tonight, however, that was not the case.\r I bought a ticket to a show online - my decision to attend this show wasn't the performer, but the combination of performer and being able to reserve my favorite seat. \r When I arrived, I discovered that I had been ""upgraded"" to an inferior seat and someone else had been given mine. After informing me that there is a disclaimer on their website somewhere that gives them the legal right to do this, they tried putting me in a less inferior seat, but I was so angry that they had taken this liberty I couldn't enjoy the concert.\r I left after twenty minutes of staring a the back of the performer's head. On the way out, the girl in charge of the A train memberships suggested that I ask the man sitting in my reserved seat if I could share the table with him since he didn't bring a guest. I was just appalled.\r This experience breaks my heart becuase I really want to like this place and I've dumped a ton of money into it. But, this was too unprofessional and rude to ignore. Pros: Great music Cons: Management more

Amazing 9/9/2009

Jack loves his regulars and we love him too. The best steak we ever had (Ribeye). cool music, amazing service, and a chef who really cares. It's all good there. Pros: Chef Jack is cool! Cons: 0 more

Vegetarians, beware. 2/17/2009

I went here on a date that just happened to be on Friday the 13th, the day before Valentine's day. Unbeknownst to me, there was a special ""valentine's"" menu - with a drastically overpriced 4 course menu. The only item that looked vegetarian was the cauliflower soup. This $15 soup was approximately 1/3 or 1/4 of a cup of soup. With a piece of brioche with lobster on top! (To justify the $15 charge?)\r Music = good. Food = overpriced, puny portions. Pros: music Cons: pricey food, no veggie options more

expensive, but worth it. 3/16/2008

Went for a live jazz event and a romantic dinner. I'm not used to the shared table, but besides that the night went smoothly. The steak was good, the ambiance was haute and the show was superb-- albeit the prices ARE a bit high. Pros: live jazz, good food Cons: slightly overpriced more

Dank, arrogant and over-priced 9/16/2007

This was my first visit to the Dakota Jazz Club and I cannot imagine ever going back. We paid $65/head to listen to one hour of live music. $30 for a bottle of $7.00 wine. I ordered the ceaser salad. Actually the menu said something like ""heart of romaine with ceaser dressing. It was $9.00 and one of the least expensive items on the menu. When the waitress took my order she asked if I'd like chicken as well on my salad. That sounded good, so I said yes. My friend ordered the crabcakes for $12.50. \r \r When the food came, I nearly laughed out loud, the portions were so small! My heart of romaine with chicken ($5.00 extra) was about six romaine leaves and no more than 2 oz of chicken along with a tablespoon of salad dressing. My friend got three crabcakes no bigger tatertots. They did give us a small plate of bread as well. \r \r The people sitting at the next table ordered the steak. I think it was $21. They got a six ounce steak, frozen fries, a little bit of grilled mixed vegetables and the bread plate.\r \r The music was good, and while I found the menu limited and arrogant, the little food we did eat was good, too. Wait staff was fine as well, but for 200 bucks, I want excellent. What a disappointment! \r \r \r \r Pros: One of theonly places to listen to live jazz in the Twin Cities Cons: Eat before you go because the food there is overpriced and the portions are miniscule more

used to be better 7/8/2007

We have been going to the Dakota for many years (plus 10) and the service and food quality has gone downhill while the prices have increased markedly. Since we dine there so often we are in a position to really know the menu and the prices and the prices have gone up and the portions keep getting smaller and the quality worse. The cheeseburger with fries used to be a good deal at $10, the fries were handcut and there was enough food to share, now the price is $11, the cheeseburger is smaller, the fries are frozen instead of fresh, and you get 1/4 the fries that you used to. The $19 steak deal is gone, now it is $26. The soup is always pricey and you get about a shallow 1/2 inch in a large bowl, if you pored it out you would get about a cup, maybe. The wine and liquor pours are stingy, get the beer, at least it is 12 ounces. You used to be able to order a small or large salad for about $4.50 and $9 respectively. Now, there is only once size salad and the price is about $7 to $9, and the server said that the salad is now medium sized. No, it's not, it is the small salad for a higher price. The Dakota prices are now as high as Vincents down the street but without the service, quality, or quantity. Pros: Great national and local jazz. Cons: The price, the service (used to be great, too much turnover now). more

Worst Customer Service 5/16/2007

After a waiter dropped a tray full of drinks right next to our table, shattering glass and fluid all over us we carried on with a positive attitude about the dining experience we thought we were about to have. Then we waited one hour and ten minutes for our food while other tables came and ate in front of us. The server offered no explanation or consolation so we asked the person who appeared to be a manager why we did not have our food. Within 5 minutes the food was on our table, unfortunately it was not hot. After all this we waited again at the end of our meal for our check and our missing in action server for over 20 minutes. Three hours later we left unsatisfied (the food was not good enough to mention) and completely annoyed about the amount of money we just wasted. more

Verry good lunch, want to go back for dinner and jazz 2/23/2007

First time there for lunch today and was very pleasantly surprised. The rooms are very nice; high ceilings, nice banquettes lining a good portion, very warm hues and nicely done artwork displayed. I ordered the butternut squash bisque, and my husband ordered the smoked chicken chowder. Both were excellent! The chowder had the perfect amount of spice, and my bisque tasted like simply-pureed squash with a dollop of tiny maple croutons, all which led to a great combination. We both ordered the cobb burger. I had read a couple of rave reviews and wanted to try. My husband doesn't get as excited about food as I, but he loved both of his choices. I did enjoy the burger very much. The burger is served on a thin slice of toast with a small amount of diced avocado and an onion ring on top, surrounded by the makings of a cobb salad--diced hard-boiled egg, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and blue cheese. The burger was perfectly done, and I enjoyed the flavors of everything else along with the burger. The only downer was the onion ring. I love a good onion ring, but this one had a cornmeal breading, which I found too sweet for the onion and not a good combo. We ordered a side of fries (because the burger comes alone), and I thought they were great. Fries are a debatable thing, though, and very much subject to personal preference. These were perfectly cut and just the right amount of texture--not crispy and not limp. Because we were on a roll, we split a flourless chocolate cake with orange mousse for dessert. I'm not one to combine chocolate with fruit, but separately, each of these was great. The orange mousse had great flavor and texture. We are looking forward to experiencing a dinner there! more

go for the music 11/9/2006

Have dined at The Dakota (dining room, not bar) a handful of times and The Dakota never disappoints for atmosphere and music. Food has been slightly above average at best. Seems as though the chef is overly-ambitious with flavors, and seems to be just a half a beat off of being great. Beet and apple salad, great concept with truffled pecorino, was wrecked with the taste of too much raw fennel. Dessert of apple dumpling with cheese - good concept - ruined by too much oozing cheese, when just a dab would do nicely. Entrees are not memorable and overpriced - 3 scallops for $24? \r \r Will go again for the entertainment - but may opt for dining in the bar the next time. Pros: Jazz at it's best Cons: Don't go for the food more

Great food, Soul-satisfying entertainment 9/28/2006

Dinner in the jazz lounge area is highly recommended and is great for couples (a booth is highly recommended) or a small group of friends. The cover is $5 and well worth the price--as it is not as overpacked like other Jazz clubs that have decent dining options. \r \r Two menus were available--""Bar food"" and a dinner menu offering innovative American cuisine. We opted for the regular dinner menu. In lieu of the mains, we ordered a handful of first courses (Beet salad, Beef carpaccio, Quail, and Crabcakes) and a sinful desert, a gourmet apple pocket with fromage. The portions were generous, given the high quality of the food. The beef carpaccio was amazingly spicy and flavorful and highly recommended. The quail and crabcakes were excellent as well. The beet salad was good, but not on par as with the other dishes. \r \r Parking at the local lot for $4 was a bargain, in comparison to other big cities, and right across the street. \r \r This restaurant is highly recommended for those looking for good food an entertainment in one spot Pros: Good food + Entertainment; Parking nearby & plentiful Cons: Only one location in MPLS! more

My new favorite! 5/14/2006

My boyfriend and I went to the Dakota Jazz Bar as an assignment for one of his classes. I had never been to a jazz bar before, but I was delightfully surprised. This was one of my favorite restaurant experiences. The staff was very respectful and the band that night was amazing! The food was delicious also. We reserved seats on the website, which was really hassle-free. Perfect date spot, except a little spendy (expecially on a college budget), but totally worth every penny! Pros: Ambience, Live band, Food Cons: On the expensive side more

Outstanding! 2/26/2006

Went this weekend with friends and everything from the music, to the wine, to the food was excellent. The live music started out a little loud, but was slightly dial back enough to allow for conversation. Recommended! Pros: Food, Music Cons: A little loud more

awesome time... 3/12/2005

Went there for the first time on Saturday night, made a reservation, got our table right on time. Greeted with water and drinks right away, tasty bread to snack on while we wait for food. Meanwhile a jazz band was whaling away on upbeat toons, impressing the crowd. The Overall has a great time, great food, and unbelievable music! Awesome time! Pros: Food, Music, Very Friendly more
