Real good time 3/14/2011

We were ready for an interactive dining experience, and we got it. The owner is passionate about his food and service, even giving a history and geography lesson on Malaysia (that might be too much for those who just want to order and eat)We did not order from the menue, askinf to be suprised and entertained. It was great and we ate there again the next day on our way out of charlotte more

Really negative experience 11/14/2010

We went to Cuisine Malaya for lunch today after reading some of the reviews on CitySearch. We ordered the roti appetizer, which was greasy but quite good. I had the beef rendang for my entree, which was mediocre. The beef was not bad, but the broccoli and pineapple in the dish were ice cold. My fiance's lunch was inedible. He ordered fried rice with chicken. There was something wrong with the chicken...it was rubbery and cold. We brought the issue to the attention of the server, who made no effort to offer an alternative dish or take the charge off the bill -- as would have been expected at any establishment. more

Nice but I prefer to cook at home 2/6/2009

It is a nice restaurant but I also enjoy getting the ready to serve and easy to prepare ingredients to cook at home. I get the ingredients from www.asiansupermarket365 more

Perfect 10 4/27/2008

I'm a picky sushi eater. I""ve been to this place @ least 5 times & have always had good service & the food has always been the same: excellent! I always recommend this place to friends that are coming here from out of town to thy this restaurant. It's a great location. Parking can sometimes be a tight fit, but only during peak hours, which is to be expected. No complaints here! Go try this place! more

Not authentic Malaysian food! 4/19/2008

After reading the reviews, I, a Malaysian decided to try Cuisine Malaya. I took my husband & his business partners there. Satay was dissapointing as it was just cut up chicken breast and nothing authentic about it. Even the 'peanut sauce' that came with the satay doesn't have much peanut & instead the taste of soy sauce was quite overpowering. I ordered curry laksa & it was nothing like the curry laksa back home - the gravy was very weak (not enough coconut milk nor candlenuts); no dried tofu nor boiled eggs. Explaining to the servers that I want the food spicy but it wasn't even close when the food was served. I asked for 'sambal' (chilli paste with dried shrimp) but that wasn't spicy either. I was utterly dissapointed with the food as I wanted to introduce my husband & his business partners to Malaysian food. Overall, the service was good & friendly except for a particular server who scowled at me when I asked her to explain the peanut pancake. Pros: Service Cons: Food! more

Incredibly Delicious with Great Service 9/13/2007

My boyfriend and I rushed our cross country drive to make it to Cuisine Malaya before they closed, as it didn't look like there were many vegetarian choices (according to Citysearch). It was well worth the scramble! The atmosphere was quiet and nicely dim, the pace was serene (even though we arrived only an hour before close), and the servers were perfect. I ordered tofu satay, and it was to die for: hollowed out tofu fried to crispy perfection stuffed with bean spouts and cucumber, then smothered in lightly spicy peanut sauce. For an entree, I had the Curry Laksa. It was glorious: an enormous bowl of egg noodles, vermicelli, crispy vegetables, and tofu swimming in a sublimely spiced coconut milk curry. It was both rich and light, with delicate peanut overtones. My boyfriend is omnivorous, so he ordered the Beef Rendang, which he assures me was delicious but not as good as the Laksa. Our meal was inexpensive, but if you're worried about the cost, there is a 10% off coupon on their website. All in all, this restaurant was a wonderful experience and left us with a great impression of Charlotte's dining scene. Pros: Service, Menu Selection, THE FOOD by god the food!, reasonable prices Cons: The decor wasn't incredibly cool more

Glorious food 8/11/2006

After reading good reviews on the Malaysian Cuisine I decided to go there with some friends and enjoy a culinary adventure. The food took approximately one hour, and during that period we had nothing to do but numb our minds with alcoholic beverages. So we gladly did. At this time not only were we starving but our server was missing, and just when our discussion was turning to politics (yes! we were getting that drunk!) A variety of fresh sushi rolls (baby octopus, eel, mackerel, and smoked salmon) arrived and as soon as they touched the table we swallowed them like marshmallows, they were gone in a blink of an eye. Then the main dishes made a triumphant entrance and they were savory, pretty, plus tasty as hell. I had the Beef (I cant remember the whole name) that sits on top of one slice(s) of pineapple(s) and comes with a small bowl of white rice. In this case the maxim quality over quantity clearly applies. Although each dish had its own unique form and flavor, it appears to me that all share the same characteristic: the frugality found in the small portions of meat and seafood. Also I would recommend having deep pockets and moderate eating habits since the dishes are not cheap and the servings stingy. I dont think Ill be coming back anytime soon. Maybe to celebrate a very special occasion like a birthday, as one of one friend bluntly put it. I guess it is going to be a while then. In conclusion the food was great but the service pretty lame. Pros: food Cons: dubious service more

Excellent! 5/27/2006

I don't live in the Charlotte area, but I make an effort to go to this restaurant every time I take a trip there. The sushi is delicious and well-presented, and I have not yet found a dish that I don't like. The service is prompt and they treat you well. It isn't totally cheap (dinner is around $12 or so per dish) but it's a great value because the food is excellent. For an even better value, go there for lunch. I especially recommend their beef rendang (especially with white rice), and the bird's nest dish (I forget the name), and fried ice cream for dessert. Pros: FOOD, Value, Service Cons: Parking can be tight more

Best food in the South 6/22/2005

I have tried many of their dishes and have found them all very enjoyable. I have always been treated by the staff as if I were royalty. Having lived in DC and experienced fine dining there I have found the menu choice to be excellent and the service as well. Formal enough to be businesslike, but so very friendly to make you feel a part of the place! If you like it really spice simply tell your server you would like you meal prepared malaysian spice I have always left a happier person! Pros: Friendly, Excellent Menu, Great Value more
