I am a very particular person when it comes to Chinese food. This restaurant is exceptional in every way - period!

WE MADE RESERVATIONS AT THIS RESTAURANT FOR MY BIRTHDAY. WHEN WE ARRIVED WE GREETED THE HOSTESS. WE WERE TOLD IT WOULD BE A FEW MINUTES. AS I SAW WALK-INS BEING SEATED, I WENT TO ...

Calling China Cafe 'medicore' would be a compliment. We were tricked by the padded reviews. The food is tasteless. China Cafe must bribe their "favorite" customers with free food or free drinks to write glowing reviews of the poor food. Imagine being bribed with this food! more

It's a bar -- forget about eating here -- it's for barflies 11/13/2007

Always in the mood to try a new Chinese restaurant in the area -- I gave China Cafe a shot. I took two friends for dinner. None of us drink beer, wine or mixed drinks. The waitress ignored us after we ordered water. I'll make it simple... Cons: China Cafe is for Barflies more

Always in the mood to try a new Chinese restaurant in the area -- I gave China Cafe a shot. I took two friends for dinner. None of us drink beer, wine or mixed drinks. The waitress ignored us after we ordered water. I'll make it simple... The positive reviews for China Cafe -- come from the barflies. The negative reviews come from people who like good food. Pure and simple. 5 stars = Barfly. 1 star = Food lover. Read the reviews for yourself. Cons: China Cafe is for Barflies more

I brag about the China Cafe to everyone.... 11/2/2007

I never post in these sites...but the review before mine prompted me to do it this time. The China Cafe is so highly rated by other members here BECAUSE of the service the owners and staff provide. I know not everybody will love the food everywhere they go. I happen to really enjoy the food at the China Cafe. In fact, I trust that the food will always be great....so usually I'll show up, sit at the bar, and will take the special of the day or I will have Kelly whip something new up. I personally think they have the best Chinese food around. Pros: Bar, food, service, atmosphere Cons: Price more

I personally think they have the best Chinese food around. But...it is the service that really makes people return to the China Cafe. The owners, Kelly and Susanna, are so friendly and social. You could come in just one time, and they will greet you by your name the next time you arrive. If you stand by the bar for 5 minutes....you will realize that almost everyone there is a regular. That is a fact....most people that go to the China Cafe are regulars who have been going for years. I brag about the China Cafe to everyone. I've even had my family drive from over an hour away just to eat there. Again...you could have the top rated restuarant in the nation, and you will find somebody that doesnt' like the food. And would bet that is the case with the previous poster. It just wasn't for them. But the overwhelming consensus here is positive for the China Cafe. Pros: Bar, food, service, atmosphere Cons: Price more

Citysearch never failed us until the china cafe. After our very mediocre meal, I took another look at the reviews on this page. I wondered how so many customers could revel in such unimaginative food. Over 75% of the 5 star reviews called the owners by name. There is no other example of this on Citysearch. If you value Citysearch (and we do) -- watch out -- The deck is stacked at this restaurant. This is not 5 star food. The only way citysearch can work -- is for customers to be fair and honest. Not by helping the owners stack the deck. Pros: Looked high & low and could not find any Cons: The Deck is Stacked at this Place more

Chinese Food for Yoopers! 8/5/2007

We ate at China Cafe and we will never return. The generic sauces could have been poured from a bottle. The flavors were non-existant. We ventured into the China Cafe based on word of mouth. That is the problem. This is Chinese food for Yoopers. If you have never had the real deal; you have no way to compre the China cafe to any other Chinese food. In the U.P., there is usually only one Chinese restaurant per town. Yoopers have no basis for comparision. The owners are The China Cafe must have little or no respect for their customers. Otherwise they would not pretend to be serving good Chinese food. When any REAL food critics in 2007 rave about the China Cafe -- we will return. Maybe that would signal a change in management. The owners of the China Cafe have duped their customers. When those customers taste good Chinese food, the China Cafe will be gone. Perhaps relocated to the U.P. Cons: 2 Thumbs Way Down more

A Favorite 8/1/2007

I have frequented China Cafe for several years now, for three reasons: their service, the food and its value. To me, a great chef is defined by his sauces. This is what separates Kelly Chang's food from the other Chinese restaurants in town. From the savory oyster sauce with his sea bass, to sweet , or the spicy five pepper shrimp, it's tough to choose from the menu, so I often ask Kelly to surprise me. I used to go to Windsor for this quality. Susana and Kelly are great hosts, but I always feel welcomed by his friendly staff, who know my kids names and always ask about them when we visit. By the way, ask him if he found anything special on that day's shopping for fresh entrees. You might be surprised by talapia or spare ribs that aren't on the menu! Not just a great Chinese restaurant, a great restaurant period. Pros: Great selection, service more

Terrible Food 6/16/2007

My wife is Chinese. We lived in China. We went to the China Cafe in Novi based on positve reviews @citysearch. What a terrible letdown. The food is not Chinese. I could go into detail about each item -- but what's the point? The fact is: This resturant would be laughed out of China. Laughed out of L.A. & NYC. Pros: None Cons: The Food more

There are 53 reviews (until this one) telling people how great the food tastes at The China Cafe. Don't fall for it. If you are going to go out of your way; find another Chinese resturant. Try the Mongolian Beef ... try anything... You wont be dissapointed 5/6/2007

I love chinese food, and have lived all over this country. One of my favorite dishes is the aforementioned Mongolian Beef. I have looked all over my general area (Dearborn, Westland) with little sucess on finding this dish the way I preferred it prepared. Looking for a new chef, I ventured to this board and it's recommendation as to "top" dining Chinese in the Detroit area. Pros: Chef, hostess, waitstaff - Cons: I wish I lived closer more

Looking for a new chef, I ventured to this board and it's recommendation as to "top" dining Chinese in the Detroit area. I must say, you all are spot on as it pertains to this dining experience. They get a FIVE STAR rating from me. Tops - you wont be dissapointed !!! As for pricing, I must confess I do not care... The meal is the focus. A bad meal is not made better by a cheap price. A great meal transends being described by a price. The price honestly didn't even occur to me. Enjoy the savory talents of this chef if you like the balance of flavors dancing in harmony! My 2c. Best Beef Friend Rice we've had! 2/25/2007

After reading numerous reviews here on CitySearch we decided to give it a try on a whim one day. We were in the area and stopped by for some takeout. This place was HOPPING, it was a Friday evening around 5:30pm. The phones were ringing off the hook, it was unbelievable. Looked like a call-center for a large corporation! It only took about 20 minutes to get our carry out order (not bad considering!), and when we got home we started feasting. The food was absolutely delicious, and the price was very reasonable. Our family of 4 made 2-3 meals out of this, and the total bill was ~$30.00. As others have before, I would highly recommend this place - Easily the best tasting Chinese I've had in the area, the Beef Fried Rice was excellent and the General Tso's chicken was very unique (and good I might add!). Pros: Everything about this place was top-notch, don't let yourself down - try this place today! Cons: Very busy, expect to wait 20-30 minutes to get your food. Closed on Mondays. more
