I have been meaning to write this place up for a while because I had such a great experience here. I took my sister to Chameau when she came to visit - I had never been so I was a bit nervous, but everything was wonderful. First, our waitress brought out Moroccan bread with a preserved lemon dip that was to die for. We had the duck bastilla as an appetizer - sort of like a savory pie with layers of thin dough and duck, which was wonderfully done. I read that Chameau is the only Moroccan restaurant in LA that makes the traditional bastilla dough rather than substituting phyllo, which is easier to work with. All I know is that it was excellent. For our main course, we split the lamb shank with quince and had sides of baby onion couscous and market vegetable tagine - all really good. I especially liked the mix of flavors in the lamb, which was fall-off-the-bone tender. We even had dessert - again, a bastilla, but sweet, and really enjoyable. Pros: food, service, sangria more

Went here to try something new - what a great experience! Everything we tried on their new summer menu was delicious (the menu now is 'designed' for entrees to be shared). The place even has Moroccan wines to choose from. The staff was extremely friendly and honest (told us, after allowing us a taste, that Moroccan wines are merely a novely for the restaurant). Parking can be a pain, but beyond that, a great, relaxed environment. Pros: excellent food, relaxed surroundings inside. Cons: parking is tough, service was a little slow. more

So friendly, unpretentious, gracious stuff! The decor is cozy, funky but also very inviting. The food is out worldly and ?nouveaux?, so do not expect to see the usual Moroccan fair like Moroccan chicken or Harira. I love the cozy yet cool environment that this place provides. It's intimate and romantic but also a great place to go with a group of friends. I've eaten at this place about 6 or 7 times and every single time I leave there with every expectation met and more. The white sangria has become my new staple and it's really hard not to leave there drunk! (so make sure you have a DD if you're drinking the sangria.) The duck bastia is one of the most perfect appetizers with the perfect combination of sweet and salty. The lamb melts in your mouth and the cous cous and veggies go perfectly as sidekicks to the lamb. Dessert is irresistable! Oh and don't forget to get mint/green Moroccan tea with dessert!!! more

I've never felt more insignificant in a restaurant before. We were seated promptly, but to wait 15 minutes before we had a glass of water. When we were trying to compare 2 or 3 bottles of wine, our server was clueless. ""Ah, that one's very good. That is also very good."" We both really enjoyed the food. It seemed the guy that delivered our food was more attentive than our server. Our water was filled once...since I was particularly thirsty when arriving, I drank my glass within a couple of minutes of it being poured. I didn't get a refill untill just before the check arrived. We didn't stick around for dessert. This was a special occasion, and though the food was tasty, the service was extremely poor and odd- almost distracting. Will not return. Awful experience. Chameau is unequivocally my favorite restaurant in town. I hesitate to review it so highly because it's such an unknown gem right now. Well, the word will get out eventually. Chameau has some of the best tasting food in Los Angeles. The meal starts with warm, soft, and perfectly seasoned foccia with fennel and lemon (?) brined olives and infused olive oil. The duck pastilla and shrimp and crab appetizers are phenomenal. For a main course be sure to try the lam shoulder tagine with macerated golden raison, root vegetable, and caramelized onion cous cous. And, for dessert try the house made ice cream or champagne and raspberry granite. As a bonus, order a bottle of (cheap @ $20!) blended Moroccan wines that perfectly compliments the meal and finish with some fresh mint leaf hot tea for an exceptional meal. Can't remember the last time I ended a meal in Los Angeles so impressed by the cuisine, service, and experience. Went with my family (including grandmother and parents), and found every single item that we ordered to be fantastic. The flourless chocolate cake with burnt caramel ice cream had an incredible, complex medly of flavors and textures. Loved the duck bastilla, house dips, spreads, and citrius olives. The mergez with chickpea fries and house-made harisa was fantastic. I read the latest city search review (not pleasant) of this place before stopping by with a friend. What a pleasant suprise! I have been back three times since. The food is amazing, the staff was not only attractive and fast, they were extremely knowlegable about their wine list and menu. There are only about fifteen tables, and it is packed on the weekends. Disappointing. Dining there on the strength of the Times Review (S. Irene Virbila do you have a friend in the kitchen?)Chameau has not found its groove. Service - spotty - bread arrived sans dips, management took our order. Dips (at last)delicious, also salmon and goatcheese sausage apps. Not so the lamb shank with spiced quince and mint cous cous; doused in sauce best described as severely over-salted mole with a lump of stewed quince slapped atop (the only respite from the salt). Limp, blackened strands of mint decorated the cous cous. Saucy monkfish pleased my companion. Disillusioned, we did not stay for much anticipated dessert. No valet; parking is difficult (a Tuesday). Interior design - cute but PLEASE lower the lights and get some candles!! Current ambience is Canters-esque AND its FREEZING; bring sweaters. I wish Chameau the best and hope it can find its way. What a gem of a place! We went there on a Saturday night after making reservations the previous night and we were promplty seated. Our hostess was very nice and patiently answered all our questions about the menu. The food is more french than morrocan but has all the right influences. Everything from the bread to the wonderful moroccan dips, to the entrees were really wonderful. And the best part of the evening was the 'bastit la aulai' the exotic dessert which was just mindblowing. Decor is very cool and the service was also very good. Overall a great evening. Delicious, from the appetizer to the dessert. The menu does change seasonaly, so the ingredients are always fresh, and there's always something new to try. The only drawbacks to this place are it's only open for dinner Thurs-Sun., and it's small so reservations are recommended. This restaurant is one of the best I have tried in southern California. Their menu changes regularily, offering variety each time you visit. Their lamb shank was extremely tender and delicious. After taking one bite of their olive-crusted salmon, all I could say was ""Wow!"". The restaurant is BYOB, but there is a liqueur store just around the corner offering a variety of wine. What a great experience. This place is small without feeling crowded, intimate without being dark and downbeat. I went with a special someone and had a wonderfully romantic meal but saw groups of five or six having an equally good time. The food is fresh, flavorful and well-presented, and the restaurant's BYOB policy only adds to the charm--like bringing a favorite bottle of wine to share at a dinner party.
