Hands-down the rudest, most unprofessional service I have EV 4/27/2010

Let me begin by saying we were a party of 8 women for a bachelorette party. This is a fact that was communicated to the restaurant at the time of booking 3 mo in advance. While we were a slight bit, and I emphasize SLIGHT, on the rowdy side, we were all well heeled, educated, cultured, ladies accustomed to high-end restaurants and were much less disruptive than MANY a other large parties I have been seated next to at much classier establishments. Also, the restaurant was nearly empty half way through our dinner due to them only taking large party reservations after 8:30pm. Our experience: We arrived for our reservation and were seated promptly - a plus. However, our server did not introduce himself ( We later found by looking at our bill, his name was Steve) and was cool and unfriendly from the beginning. We ordered several small plates to be shared by the table and brought with us 3 bottles of very good, slightly expensive bottles of wine to drink from our day of wine tasting. Our food was quite good, but we had to ask for water on at least 2 occasions, our tables was ""cut off"" without explanation and done so in a very rude and unprofessional way. We later learned it was due to an ABC law that states a table can not continue to be served alcohol if a person is asleep (To explain - We had a nurse who works nights, and due to being up all day wine tasting when she would normally be sleeping, was understandably exhausted.) Had this law been explained to us in a professional and courteous way, we would have all understood - it wasn't. In addition, our bottle of Alpha Omega Chardonnay that we BROUGHT with us was left nearly HALF FULL in the wine bucket and was not poured nor offered to us to take home (Something the restaurant does allow). They were simply going to leave OUR bottle there. Upon receiving the bill we were further insulted by having our money counted out-loud in front of us. THEN, when we asked that $60 be put on 2 credit cards (the rest paid in cash), they were instead charged $86, because we were accidentally short cash due to one member of our party being unavailable, and were therefore remiss in collecting her payment portion. UNACCEPTABLE. Do not count money in front of your guests, and if there is a discrepancy in money, you should bring it to the party's attention in a discreet and professional way, and ASK how they would like to resolve it! You do NOT simply charge a different amount than you were told to! I have dined at dozens of high-end fine dining restaurants up and down the west coast from LA to Seattle and beyond and this was HANDS DOWN the WORST and rudest service I have EVER, EVER experienced. The food was good and I'm sure would be a perfectly fine dining experience for a couple, but they are OBVIOUSLY not accustomed to handling groups, and on principle, I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone! Our dinner at Redd the previous night however, was fabulous on every level. Pros: Good food Cons: SERVICE!, SERVICE!, SERVICE! more

Best restaurant on Napa 6/8/2009

This place was highly recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. My wife and I had the duck with mushroom risotto which was the best dish we had while we were in napa. Service was excellent. We sat on the outside patio which was nice and cozy with a fireplace. Had the brownie with caramal gelato which was sooooo good also. Highly recommend this place in downtown, best restaurant in Napa! more

Excellent Service & Atmosphere with above average Food 10/6/2008

The Celadon staff was excellent during the entire evening. The atmosphere was fun and enjoyable for our party of six. The food and drinks were above average. I would recommend this restaurant for both small intimate dinners and for larger parties. The only complaint I had was making the initial reservation and the constant calls to confirm our reservation. Celdaon staff called at least 6 times in two days to confirm our reservation. On one instance, two confirmation calls came wihtin two minutes of each other by two separate Celadon staff members. Other than the constant confirmation, I would say Celadon is one of the best in Napa. Pros: Excellent At all levels throughout the dining experience Cons: Avoid their sister restaurant--Coles Chop House more

Great food for a great price 1/4/2008

We dined at this restaurant on New Year's weekend. Our reservation was for a party of 4 @ 9:00 p.m. The restaurant was cozy, had great atmosphere, & great service. The food was excellent; 2 of us order the Kobe Flatiron steak, & 2 of us ordered the Hanger steak special. Our starters were also excellent-the Caesar salad & Clam chowder. Great wine pairings also. My husband & I cleaned our plates! Pros: Great portion size, great value Cons: Difficult to see from parking lot more

Downtown Napa's Best. 9/18/2007

Celadon was recommended to me by a few locals when I arrived for my first-time stay in Napa. It was a short walk from the B&B I was staying at and, being a NY foodie, I was hoping for a good meal. It surpassed expectations. The indoor space is attractive, airy and comfortable. There is a lovely outdoor space but since I was in Napa during a heat wave I opted to sit inside. I had no problem making a reservation (a Sat nite at 8:45pm) and we were seated promptly. After cocktails we began with a ""green plate"" Tomato salad special app and ceasar salad app - both sizable portions and delicious. For entrees we shared a Snapper special entree and the togarashi-crusted scallops entree with marbled potatoes, frisee beets and pickled onions with fennel cream. Again, both were good-sized portions, nicely plated and very tasty and flavorful, paired with excellent wine. We finished with cappuccinos and a fantastic warm gingerbread dessert. The service was excellent. The bill came to $112 and the evening could not have been more pleasant and satisfying. I look forward to returning. more

Best fine dining in all of Napa 7/20/2007

We went here for our anniversary. We called to let them know and they gave us the best seat in the house. The food was exceptional. Service was excellent. Parking was really easy. The prices were very reasonable. Don't forget to have dessert! Reservations are easy to make- you can do it online. Their customer service is superb. Pros: Great food, great service, easy parking and reservations, affordable, romantic Cons: No cons at all! more

A real gem in the heart of downtown napa 4/17/2007

If you blink, you just might miss Celadon of Napa. Located in the beautifully restored Hatt Building in downtown Napa, Celadon is a real gem. Chef-owner Greg Cole (also of Cole?s Chop House) and Executive Chef Marcos Uribe dazzle patrons with an exciting mix of global international dishes which are sure to impress even the finest of diners. With an exclusive wine list consisting mainly of small boutique wineries from the Napa Valley, you are sure to find a wine to match each dish. The ever-present owner is sure to charm any weary patron tired from a day of touring and wine tasting. The beautifully presented dishes are nothing but complemented by the welcoming and attentive wait staff. If global international is not your style, Greg Cole also owns the classic American steakhouse just down the street, Cole?s Chop House. If Mr.Cole and his wife/business partner Beth Fairbairn can?t please you?.. nobody can. Pros: Beautiful courtyard seating, creative festive dishes, atmosphere Cons: N/A more

Horrible... Horrible... Just plain Most Horrible Experience EVER!!! 4/2/2007

I guess I was unlucky this past Saturday night because it was one disaster after another!!! I WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!!! They are rude, snobby, idiots!!! Cons: Everything... from the rude, snobby manager... right down to the incompetent host more

Great Californian Cooking! 3/25/2007

My husband and I went to Celadon on the recommendation of the font desk at the hotel where we were staying in Napa (and one of the wineries we visited recommended it as well). The ambience was great; we sat on the patio where there was a fire going in a fireplace and heaters all around. Very cozy. The sourdogh bread and olive oil were yummy. The macadamia crusted goat cheese appetizer was creamy and tangy; we loved the port-simmered figs. For entrees, I had the vegetable polenta Napoleon, which was fantastic. The polenta was both creamy and crunchy. My husband had the Moroccan lamb, which was out of this world. For dessert, we split the bread pudding, which was fabulous. Our server was very attentive. The whole experience was great. We would highly recommend this restaurant to a visitor in Napa for great food and great ambience. more

our favorite napa dining experience! 1/17/2007

charming service, top-notch food, lovely decor ... what an amazingly pleasant dining experience ... staff -- including owner, greg cole -- all act as if they are genuinely happy you are there. the food is amazing, really. we had two appetizers, split a salad, had two entrees, and finished with a dessert ... we couldn't stop eating, and we wanted to make sure we had everything on the menu that had caught our eye. we also had wine-by-the-glass and a cocktail ... all for $120 ... we couldn't believe how affordable such a terrific meal could be! we could tell celadon is cole's baby. he was working the floor ... not just chatting with guests, but bussing tables, serving drinks ... he wasn't micromanaging; rather it seemed he really wanted to participate, that he really enjoyed being there. if we could take celadon home with us (to poughkeepsie), we would in a heartbeat! Pros: absolutely everything! Cons: we can't think of one thing we didn't like about this place! more

Very romantic setting 9/14/2006

Too bad I went with colleagues. The outside patio is expanisve and beautiful even though it's enclosed all the way around. Aso for food, the starters were very good but I think entrees tried to do too much with too many ingredients. more

Pleasant Experience in Downtown Napa 8/16/2006

The food here is generally very good. Some things are better than others, but overall you will be satisfied. An 8:00 reservation for 2 wasn't seated until 8:20. Small bar, and the wines by the glass selection was pretty ordinary considering the location. Service is friendly and good but nothing to write home about. Outdoor patio with fireplace looks great. Pros: Food, Decor Cons: Wine List more

Good Food, Great Service, Hit-n-Miss Cocktails 1/4/2006

My friends and I went to Celadon and were greeted with some of the most approachable and knowledgable waitstaff around (they make very informed recommendations, genuinely cheerful, etc.) We ate mostly small plates and salads, but practically everything tasted great. The steamed mussels with bacon and tomato really hit the spot (and there's plenty of bread to go around to soak up the delicious broth) and the duck confit salad with truffle vinaigarette was satisfying. The vanilla creme brulee (which we shared at the end) was silky smooth and accented well with the caramelized banana slices. The martinis and cocktails were a bit iffy. The ""Red Pear"" (highly suggested by the host & waiter), made with pear-infused vodka, pomegrante and citrus juices/liqeuers was really good, as was the ""Our Cosmopolitan"" with blood orange juice -- but the ""Negroni"" tasted like a really bad Manhattan with gin to top. Pros: food (small plates), service, ambience Cons: cocktails possibly more

Learn from my mistake called ""CELADON"" 7/18/2005

I'mm a chef with 16 years experience with 6 years in San Francisco. My expeience.... The duck confit salad was acceptable with dates (nice surprise) and three ""micro""-bits of duck confit. The beef satay was typical of any Asian restaurant. Some creativity would have been nice. I had the main entree of duck breast with risotto and cherry-lavender jus. The menu description did not follow what I was served. I only received a third of a breast; however, it was nicely carmelized. The risotto resembled being prepared with Elmer's glue....absolutely TERRIBLE. The jus was simply duck pan drippings and lacked any essense of the named ingredients. Overall, I paid $22 for an ice-cream scoop sized lump of Elmer's glue with three scraps of duck breast. The waitstaff required a bit more charisma. My recommendation. Eat somewhere else, then bring a bottle of wine to Celadon and enjoy it's ambience. Pros: Ambience, Close to water, Nearby shops Cons: Waitstaff, Food...food...food more

Excellent food 4/5/2005

Located in downtown Napa, Celadon advertises itself as comfort food. The food was creative, but not too ""out there"". We started off with the Crab Cake. It looked somewhat miniscule for $12, but when you dig into it, it was very delicious. There were large chunks of crab in the crab cake. I had the Seared Scallops with Risotto Lobster-Tangerine broth ($22). It was absolutely yummy. The scallops were lightly seared, and it was crusted with seasoning. The risotto was in the lobster-tangerine broth, and you can almost taste the tangerine peel in it. My boyfriend had the Onion Crusted Chicken ($19), and you can smell the strong Onion Aroma. The sour cream mashed potatoes mixed with bacon bits gave it a nice kick. Pros: Patio Dining, Attentive Service, Good Parking more

great place! 9/14/2004

One of our favorite dinning experiences in Napa. The outside patio was very romantic, service was attentive and food was deilicious. Definitely try their Kobe steak if it's offered that day. Pros: patio, food, service more

Just OK 5/17/2004

Dined out with a friend and ambiance and service were OK. The wine list is great - but the food was heavy handed and not all combinations work. Had the panko crusted soft shell crab and the coconut shrimp to start and they were very similar - could have been at Applebees. The salad they came on was good though. I had the marlin and it was great but the ""red rice"" was very sweet and overpowering. Had the fruit crisp for desert and it was excellent - best part of the meal. Pros: Pretty Space, Wine List, Desert Cons: , Fried Apps taste same more

Romantic 5/8/2004

The new covered patio with its artistic lighting creates a romantic setting for any romantic dinner Pros: Superb menu, Excellent staff, Great use of spices more

Overall good experience 2/2/2004

While most of the food was great, our evening ended with one of us getting creme brulee. He'd never had cold creme brulee so he asked how it was prepared and if in fact, it should be cold. The server said yes, it's supposed to be cold but couldn't explain why or offer to get a warm one. Seemed a little strange. The rest of the food, however, was great and the service overall was fine. I would return. more
