The red carpet is waiting....... just ask 3/6/2011

These folks are the real deal. We came in with at least 15 people, not knowing this is a small venue. They totally pulled out the red carpet. Each person there went over and above what we expected. The food was amazing and the drink delish! I really want to recommend this place to everyone. This was our first visit and we ALL will definitely be back. Thank you to everyone that was working - we hope you enjoyed the leftover cake. These folks really care about each person who walks through that door. Just communicate what you want they will accommodate.*** note to previous previous reviewers -servers are human and don't read minds. more

Best patio great cocktails 9/21/2010

we live in the neighborhood and come fairly often.\r My wife gets the cardamon martini every time and they have fresh squeezed juice so the margaritas are amazing and tart.\r We like all there severs and they make us feel welcome every time.\r When the owner is around he usually comes to our table and chats with us a bit\r We like to come here mid week to enjoy a quiet dinner and avoid some of the madness that happens on the weekends.\r The food is good, but most of the plates are pretty small so you need about 3 plates to feel like you ate something.\r My wife loves the tempura chevre date balls and I go with the burger, it's the only regular sized thing on the menu and it damn good.\r We love this place and it's a good place to take out of town guests for a taste of Portland culture. more

AWESOME food / AWEFUL service! 8/7/2010

Went there with a large group of coworkers last night. It was my first time there and there was about 12 of us. I saw that there was only one food menu and one cocktail menu on the table and it was being looked at, so I went to the bar to ask for another menu. First, it took over 5 minutes before anyone would even look at me, so I just asked what appeared to be a waiter (young kid) if I could please have a menu. He seemed put out and first said we'd all have to share one, then when I said ""are you KIDDING??"" he told me he didnt have anymore. I went back to our table, and readied myself to wait for a menu. Five minutes later he dashed over and literally TOSSED a menu on the table at me, then dashed off again. RUDE!\r No one gave or offered us water either. It took over HALF AN HOUR us to get drink and food orders and some of our orders were even forgotten and never brought. When we were ready to get our tab we were told they wouldnt break up the bill, so we wait...and wait...and WAIT and finally I go up to the bar and am COMPLETELY IGNORED for almost 10 minutes. I finally just bark out that we want our tab, that we've been ready to leave for quite a while. \r All in all, yes, I must admit the food was beyond awesome, but the service we experienced was pathetic and most of us will likely not be returning. more

Hair-rowing Dining Experience 5/20/2010

Nice ambience, nice art on the walls, nice eclectic menu with nice prices.\r \r Not nice: a disgusting long brown hair in my Smoked Tofu salad. The salad was disappointing before I found the hair. The tofu was over cooked, dry and tasteless. Luckily, there were only two miserly pieces of the stuff. The beets were fine. The arugula was fresh, however the sherry vinaigrette salad dressing was excessively salty (I like salty) and this was overdone.\r \r Our server did take the salad off the bill which was the appropriate thing to do. However, an apology and an offer to prepare something would have been a nice gesture.\r \r Would be nice to see the person in the kitchen wearing a hairnet…\r \r The stars are awarded for outward appearances. What counts is the quality of the food and the service and I was really disappointed in both. Pros: Nice ambience Cons: Hair in the food more

Amazing outside summer dining experience! 8/27/2009

We shared several exquisite small plates including tempura squash flower stuffed with ahi, their flat iron steak bites wrapped with house cured bacon, Moroccan spiced chicken kabobs, and huge, tender scallops wrapped in their house cured bacon drizzled with something awesome. The service was fantastic, but even better was the atmosphere. We sat in the back in the hammock chairs, digging our toes in the white sand. When the warm afternoon sun went down, the servers lit the tiki torches and fire pit. They also have outdoor heaters for chillier evenings. The amazing summer garden was in full bloom and we were surrounded by friendly patrons who were obviously also enjoying the food and drinks and warm summer evening. We lingered after dinner and nursed our cocktails but never felt pressure from our server to hurry up. What a great place- I will definitely go back. Pros: Awesome outdoor dining area, intimate atmosphere more

Wonderful place for summer afternoon drinks and food 6/3/2009

This place was amazing. We had the Moroccan draper valley chicken, the chevre date ball with honey and sage, and the bruschetta, and the stuffed peppers. To wash it down, the best mojito i have ever had, the Black Mango Mojito. And my friend had their specialty margarita. This place has an amazing patio that goes all around the house. children under 12 are NOT allowed on the back patio for safety reasons (there are swinging chairs and a swinging table) but there is seating in the front, inside, and on the side of the house. In the back there is a sand covered space which makes you feel like you are near the beach in a little cabana. They have heat lamps and tiki torches. \r \r I recommend it to all, and everyone should try it. Perfect summer place!!!!!! Pros: the amazing outside seating, the food, the drinks, the price Cons: nothing!!! go eat there more

Great patio! 4/17/2009

Went there on one of the first sunny days in April and I can't wait for the summer because this is going to be my spot! Their patio is awesome, with single hammocks, swings and a floating bar, (hung from the covered patio). Apparently the pebble rocks that cover the back patio are going to be all sand in the next few weeks which will make this the perfect summer spot. Not to mention the $1.50 tall boys and the cheap, and very good, appetizers on the menu. Spent $25 for three high quality appetizers and four drinks. On a budget like mine that's not bad. Try the yam fries. Pros: Cheap PBRs with good appetizers to go with Cons: happy hour doesn't last all night more

sort of ok 4/5/2009

what did we eat? 1) yam fries, 2) salt and pepper calamari, 3) the burger, 4) maragarita\r \r what did we like or not? 1) the yam fries tasted good but were slightly oily. mostly though, we just could not understand paying $6 for about 15 fries. um, no way next time. 2) the salt & pepper calamari had a nice taste. it was unusual and was for the most part good. like the fries though, a tad oily. 3) the manchego cheese burger was good but surprisingly plain.\r \r the 'small plate' concept seems to have gotten translated in the US as 'small plate, big price'. it's not that it wasn't good, but the delight-to-price ratio is a bit low.\r \r service was decent.\r \r \r \r \r Pros: nicely re-done house Cons: over-priced more

Love it!!! 3/6/2009

I love this place! They have great food, good prices, and a fantastic happy hour. I haven't hung out on the patio yet, but hear it is really nice is warm weather. Try the sweet potato fries, the chicken appetizer (forgot the name), and the shrimp. I don't know why it isn't busier, though?? Too far down Mississippi for some? I hope it stays open through these tough times... Pros: Yummy food Cons: ?? more

yumm! 2/17/2009

What a wonderful find. \r We tried the Rosemary skewered red potatoes with truffle aioli---heavenly...\r Tiger shrimp with fried anchovies and garlic sherry sauce - YUM.. \r my favourite was the Chicken and fennel stuffed piquillo peppers- \r Finally we had The Yam fries with lemon cayenne aioli - so sweet, we called them dessert.\r The service was also fabulous... and the atmosphere was nice, like the touch of the local art on the walls.\r more

A little Gem on Mississippi 1/27/2009

Last week my friends and I dined at Casa Naranja, which is a wonderful little place with a very misleading name. They don't serve burritos, but they do serve a delightful menu of dishes that I'd classify as more Mediteranean than anything else. They seem to emphasize a tapas, or small plate theme. I noticed that although the dishes are small, they still put a lot of thought into presentation. I had the vegetable tartar. It looked like a pieace of art and tasted even better. The menu fits the creative vibe found on Mississippi. I had a pork dish as my entre that I would recommend to everyone. It had a perfect balance of smokey, sweet, and tangy tastes. I almost did not go to Casa Naranja due to someone's earlier post of rude service, however, I found the server to be extremely knowledgable and patient. An earlier post was mocking his tatoos, and really I'd say go to the restaurant just to see them. This guy was great! The menu may be slightly over priced for the area, but the taste of the food makes you forget it. The restaurant itself is painted very vibrantly with different colors in each room. It is decorated by paintings from local artists. The floor plan is a bit snug, but that should not deter you away. Oh by the way, they have an excellent cocktail list! You should definitely try it out. more

Great Food but Lousy Service, bunch of Rude Dudes for Servers 1/5/2009

I thought the food was great and I have never seen this type menu selection before. I thought we were going out for fancy Mexican food but was really surprised by what they had on the menu. I really enjoyed the food.\r \r Hey Chris & Julie Broderick from the Video FIRE YOUR RUDE DUDE WAITERS and hire some with personality if you want this place to be successful! The reason I will not return was because of your servers. I had ""Mr Exoskeleton"" for a waiter (if you go there you will know who Mr. Exoskeleton is if you see him) and he acted like a total snob. Our table asked him a few questions about the food and he acted like we just crawled out of a cave. I am looking at this punk kid with greasy hair, a faded black T-shirt and the stupidest tattoo I have seen in a long time thinking ""Who the F are you?"" We just wanted to know about the food and he treats use like the most culturally unendowed people on earth.\r \r Severs should smile.\r Severs should make there guests feel welcome.\r Severs should wash their hair.\r Severs should wear crisp clothing not your old black t-shirt from flag football.\r Servers should be excited to explain the menu and not belittle their guests.\r \r I was going to give this place 4 stars but after reliving the service I am knocking it down to 3 more

I Could Do Better and I'm no Chef 11/10/2008

I went to Casa Naranja for brunch. The temperature was about the same as it was outside, 50 degrees or so. I ordered two eggs (over easy), potatoes and toast. My friend ordered the chevre burger; it sounded like a biscuit and gravy type of dish with a hamburger patty and goat cheese, it was a cheeseburger. So it took about 40 minutes to get our food. My eggs were not over easy but over burnt, the potatoes were old (all dried out) and lukewarm and no toast. The waitress said they were making the toast, you think 40 minutes they could have remembered the toast. I asked for jam too, she said they didn?t have jam because they were new at the brunch thing and didn?t getting around to getting jam yet. They also forgot the chevre and the egg on my friend?s burger. I asked to speak to the owner/ Exec Chef about this, he stared blankly at me while I pointed out (nicely too) all these things. He didn?t sorry or try to fix the issue just walked away without saying a word. I will never go back to this sham of a restaurant- save your money for a place that serves- can you imagine- edible food. more

Awesome food , drinks, and atmosphere 10/7/2008

If you are looking for a fun, relaxing place to hang out on a sunny afternoon, sipping on a glass of sangria, or a deliciously minty mojito, not to mention many other fun drinks, while munching on any number if their tasty small plates, then this place is for you. At night when the fire is going and the torches are lit, you get the feeling of being somewhere exotic. This place is also very romantic with cozy seating inside and tons of outside seating. The waitstaff is super nice and very informative, proffesional, and all good looking. Totally somewhere to try once or many times. Pros: ambience, food, service more

Excellent food and the best service 9/22/2008

My girlfriend and I recently visited this fantastic new addition to the Mississippi neighborhood. We were shocked at how huge and great the outside patio and seating are are and look forward to spending a lot of time there when the weather gets warm again. We started with a couple very creative and delicious cocktails and shared a seasonal salad. For our dinner courses we shared a couple small plates and an entree. The stand out food item was the dungeness crab ravioli. However, all of the cuisine was great. On top of great food and drinks, our server broke the mold of a lot of the poor service seen around town. He was very professional, knowledgable, and attentive; without being abrasive. This type of standout service was refreshing. We look forward to our next visit! Pros: Great food and drinks, superb service more

Great ambience & great prices 9/19/2008

Have been here a few times and it just keeps getting better and better. Had the smoked seafood platter and it had the best smoked oysters and salmon I've ever had. The prices are very reasonable, so you can try lots of different plates. Good, adventurous cocktail menu. Hands down the best bread pudding in town. Try to be seated on the patio, it's beautiful. Will definitely go back. Pros: patio, decor, service, good place to take a date Cons: parking more

Awesome Outdoor patio with fireplace! 9/19/2008

The food was very tasty! I had a pork dish with little tiny potatoes and apples, Very good combo! Loved the stuffed mushrooms and summer squash soup. They had a good variety of music playing and the server was CUTE, very attentive and knowlegable. Great Tequillas! The menu is very well priced and I will definately come back! Pros: Outdoor patio, fireplace, service & tiki torches Cons: parking more

We like it! 8/3/2008

We read about this place in the Oregonian back in June and waited to try it out. What a pleasant surprise for a new restaurant. First the outdoor patio is fantastic. and they did a great job remodeling a vintage house. We had a group of six so we got to try several small plates and shared a couple of entrees. Our favorites were the chorizo clams, mushrooms, chicken croquettes, scallops and asparagus. It seems like the fish of the day entree is where the kitchen really shines. I would say they have a great selection of small plates, but aren't necessarily all that Spanish. I don't think this is a bad thing because there were so many options we wanted to try. Also, I'm a red wine fan and the wine list is fairly limited so I went with a mojito and it was great. Others in our party loved the sangria served by the pitcher. It will be fun to watch this spot evolve. Pros: Great outdoor patio, fun small plates more
