I like how you have to go through the kitchen to get to the restaurant. Pros: null Cons: null more

An Italian Feedbag 3/7/2009

If you're in the mood to stuff your face with piles and piles of not particularly great food, Buca is your place. It's loud, fun (if you like loud) and always busy. The food is, well, average. Grocery store deli counter average. Shopping mall food court average. They should hand out pheasant feathers as you leave average. We started with a Caesar salad. Not an anchovy or a hint of egg or garlic to be found. Just a bowl of lettuce tossed with a bland, commercial dressing and covered with some sort of parmesan-like cheese. If you can't get a Caesar right, things aren't looking good for the rest of the meal. The Bruschetta was a greasy, uninteresting mess, and the first of the dishes to arrive with Buca's signature shredded basil garnish (I'm fairly certain this is created using one of those crosscut paper shredders you can buy at most office supplies). The Caprese was horrible, but it's wintertime so we knew what we were getting into. It's my suspicion Buca's summer Caprese is about the same. The Ravioli Al Pomodoro featured a huge pile of slightly overcooked ravioli covered with a bland, uninspired marinara. (Why marinara and not pomodoro? That's the way Buca rocks it, baby.) Next was the Gnocchi Al Telefono. A huge pile of chewy little gnocchi, covered in a vague, slightly sweet cream sauce and garnished with more basil from the paper shredder. The Linguine Frutti di Mare was the best dish we had, with a huge pile of slightly overcooked pasta, covered in clams, grease, garlic, more grease, shrimp and calamari, more grease and surrounded by mussels. And did I mention grease? All in all, an extremely huge pile of very, very average food. And it comes with screaming. Lots of screaming. Birthday people having more fun than you can possibly imagine and screaming like drunken fratboys. Fun. Pros: Huge piles of food at reasonable prices. Decent service. Cons: If you think this is great Italian, you've never had great Italian. Noisy. Frathouse noisy. more

Check out the bar 8/31/2007

After many visits to Buca de Beppo in Minneapolis and suffering through the long, sometimes miscalcutated, wait times we decided to try eating at the bar. This is the way to go at this place. We have had two different bartenders and we can't decide who we enjoy having serve us more, both are fantastic! More personality in these two than the rest of the staff combined. Food is always what we expect, red sauce done well. Try the Quatro al Forno for the best variety. We will be back often. more

Delicious! 4/29/2007

Having been to Italy, I was not expecting authentic Italian food, nor was I dissappointed that Buca doesn't serve authentic Italian. However, the food is delicious! I took some friends who were visiting me from out of town to Buca last night, and every single one of us loved it. When we first walked in the restaurant, we all noticed the amazing smelling food. The food lived up to that smell! The pizza (although really greasy) was yummy, as was the garlic bread, fettucinne, quatro al forno, and chocolate cake! The only thing that was so-so was the caesar salad. The portions are also huge - I have enough leftovers for a few days of meals. I will definitely be returning! more

Service? 10/29/2006

I've been to Buca plenty of times, but this was the first time at this location. We made reservations for 18 people for a birthday. We weren't told that 18 people would have to be split between 2 tables - we would have gone elsewhere. So, our birthday party was split between 2 back-to-back tables....meaning 1/2 the guests couldn't talk to each other. The food came out at all different times. We always get dessert with singing and candles for birthdays at every other location, but not this time. With a bill upwards of $500, we really expected better service. more

Lots of food for cheap 8/21/2006

If you are looking to get a huge plate for cheap, this is a place to be. If you are looking for fine Italian dining, Bucca isnt your place as it isnt mine. All servings are huge and all taste almost the same; it seems they use the same sauce for all their dishes. As for service, it wasnt as bad as many other reviewers noted. more

It was amazing 1/7/2006

I went there to eat and after i read these reviews and i was shocked!!! I had an exelent waiter he explained everything about family sizes and stuff and we asked for advice and ggave us exelent comments. We went there right at 5 when they opened and there was very few people there and was just a great atmosphere. The food was AMAZING! and it didn't take to long to get. The sizes were enough for 2 but i could easily eaten a whole one...It was also soo fresh. I got the ravioli with meat sauce and i was nurvous because i didn't want it to be too salty but it was the furthest thing from that with the same flavor! i thought it was amazing but after about 6 is when it gets very full..... i thought it was amazing and cannot wait to go again! Pros: FREE PARKING!, Delishous, Very fresh food Cons: small, not for 2 (date) more

Good Food 5/7/2005

We thought the food was very good, and the service also was great. Interesting photos on the wall, noisy when busy due to hard ceilings that don't absorb sound well. Enjoyed the visit. more

Inappropriate Wait staff 1/28/2005

The last two times we've been there, we've had poor service. One wait staff smelled like a brewery. The next time, when the waitress asked for our drink orders and my wife didn't order booze, she asked "why not?" For any number of reasons, this question is completely inapporopriate. Cons: rude, inappropriate, boozy wait staff more

More is just more! 4/8/2004

I have been to two different Buca's a total of three times. The food was nothing special. They do handle large groups. In fact, that is why I will not go back. Too loud, too spotty on service. Cons: , Too loud, Long wait more

Bad experience 4/8/2004

We had a party of 8 and ordered 3 platters. They had brought them out to us at staggered times. First the Ravioli was brought out, and the noodles were gooey. When brought to there attention we were told "that's how fresh noodles taste." The second dish was fine, however the third dish was first prepared incorrectly and then took an additional 45 minutes to make. When that was finally brought out the noodles were crunchy. Nothing was done to make up for the mistakes. more

Buca di crappo 1/20/2004

Midwesterners tend to mix quality and quantity in reviews. Yes, Buca makes large portions. Yes, they pack you in. Yes, you are spoon fed the idea that a restaurant like this is representive of Authentic Italian Cuisine. Yes, you are misled. I've had better spaghetti out of a Chef Boyardee can. I don't see handmade pastas, ravioli's, etc. I see pre-made varieties...and that is what American food is all about. You get what you pay for...cheap large quantities of pasta. Europeans don't feast like it's the last meal before a hanging...they feast on small portions that are hand-made with care and have wine and talk (not loudly, just talk) well into the evening (starting around 9ish). If you want a McDonalds experience, go to Buca. If you want an authentic Italian experience, go New York, Chicago and find a restaurant that does not advertise to the masses. Pros: Lots of food Cons: Lots of bad food more

Immigrant Food Rocks! 6/29/2003

Are you people mad? Whoever thinks this restuarant sells itself as serving authentic Italian food must have paid no attention to what country they were in when they ate there, what language the waiter was speaking, or what language the menu was in. Want authentic Italian food in a quiet little cafe overlooking the palazzo? GO TO ITALY. princeofpugs had it right, this is Italian food as prepared by Southern Italian-Americans. As the grandson of grandparents that got off the boat from San Justino not too long ago, I can tell you this is what ravioli tastes like in America, what stuffed shells taste like in America, and what baked ziti tastes like in America. Don't like it? Tell my grandma, then go to Italy or a northern Italian specialty restaurant. Fun for birthdays, loud as heck, some items are garlicy but otherwise bland. There are meatless items fyi. Pros: Good food, San Marzano Tomatoes Cons: LOUD more

italian?........ 4/21/2003

As an Italian American, I can say 100% Buca is FAR from Italian. Yes the ambience of their restaurants are fun, their idea of Chicken Cacciatore slopped on overly garlic (Italian food is not as garlicky has most thing it is) mashed potatoes is ungodly and downright like "prison food." MN has had a real hard time with AUTHENTIC Italian food. more

Buca di Barfo 4/2/2003

I went once. Tried it again. Went a third time. Still, all I could find was various preparations of sausage and thin marinara sauce. I wanted to request earplugs and a fan, but thought it to be rude. WAY too loud and WAY too hot. Unless you are into sausage and have 10 people, it isnt affordable. I'll hit Sbarro's drive through and be fed in less than 3 hours. Pros: Good for BIG groups, Sausage lovers, Loud & Sweaty people Cons: Not good for < 10, Nothing without meat, Forget talking more

THE POINT 3/10/2003

Now, after reading several of these reviews, I see that almost everyone has COMPLETELY MISSED THE POINT! more

Buca de Beppo 2/18/2003

Buca is only pleasant when the group our are with is special and fun. THe food is not especially good and it is very expensive for what you do get. more

Size ain't everything... I hope. 1/14/2003

"Best of"??? Give us all a break! Is this skewed rating the result of partial brain death with all the "me-too's" casting a lazy vote? I've had a better meal out of a dumpster. The tomato sauce has the distinct aromatic properties of leaded tin and the pasta would make excellent chinking for my cabin's timbers. Buca's only redeeming values are that their foodstuff's bland enough for everybody and big enough to fill their bellies. Ambience might be nice... if I could ocassionally see through the over-crowded throng. They do have a peachy keen restroom sign though. Does that count? Pros: Cheap eats, Fast service, Everybody can eat Cons: Bland as sawdust, Claustrophobic, Over-rated & mindless more

Bout as Italian as a Chevy 1/13/2003

Are you kidding me? Buca is Italian like Red Lobster is seafood. It is the most horrible excuse for Italian other than Olive Garden that I have ever seen. However, if you don't know any better it would seem good. more

Okay but... 1/11/2003

I like the atmosphere, but the food was largely disappointing. Not worth the top spot but a good family restaurant. more
