If you have to choose one restaurant to go to in San Francisco, it should be Boulevard. Boulevard is...

perfection 7/21/2007

The salmon with chervil and lobster - perfect. Ms. Sullivan's desserts are the best in San Francisco - the ginger bread dessert was perfect. The ahi tuna appetizer - one of the best in the city. The service was elegant and friendly. Thanks to Scott, the sommelier or recommending the perfect shiraz. I cannot find anything wrong with the service, execution, or food at all. I'm one of the pickiest amateur food critics around and I would pick Boulevard every time over any restaurant in San Francisco. Great job, I'll be back again and again. Thank you to Boulevard for a perfect evening. Well done. Very well done 5 stars. Pros: everything, food, wine list, service Cons: the restaurant can get backed up sometimes in the front more

Possible Favorite SF Spot 6/29/2007

My wife and I dined at Boulevard for our wedding anniversary. The reservations were made well in advance and we had requested a table in the back with views of the bridge- the request came through. Our appetizers of ahi tuna and the ginger crab salad were delicious starters. For our entree- the salmon and prime rib pork medallions were outstanding. We passed on dessert as nothing jumped out at us which was fine. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. A special event dining experience for us. more

A Sure Thing! 5/30/2007

I took a group of colleagues and was very happy at the end of the night. I have been there before, so I knew general satisfaction would be likely. The lamb was perfect, the foie gras served on a disc of toast and flavored with a tangy sauce elgant, the deserts truly artistic, worthy of an impromptu fashion show, the long table a runway. The price was high, but not for the food and the service. The ambience was very fancy, yet comfortable, the arched brick ceiling by itself inspired conversation. I will be back, but with someone special for a romantic night. Pros: Very pretty restaurant, elegant food Cons: The bathroom is under a separate zip code - though very nice more

overpriced, small bland portions 1/6/2007

Went there on New Years Eve after calling to verify there would be open seating in the bar area. When we arrived around 6:30 the hostess told us there would be about a two hour wait for bar seats, no problem I understand it's NYE. I pointed out an open table in the bar and she said they were holding it for someone. Guess there's no res. for the bar unless you're VIP. Went to the bar and asked for bartenders suggestion for glass of red wine and a margarita on the rocks- price $31. After getting a table we ordered al a carte from the prefixe menu. For an app we had ravioli (3 small pieces $20), main course for my girlfriend was abalone the size of box of tic tacs ($21) and I had the filet ($45). The one bright spot was our server who's name I think was Francesca. She was very knowledgeable and attentive despite the busy night. This wasn't our first visit to Boulevard and I know that it's not all about serving size, but I was disappointed by the flavor of the food, the price of the drinks abd the door staff's attitude. more

Miniscule portions, bad customer service. 1/1/2007

My husband and I were looking forward to trying Boulevard and managed to get a booking on NYE. I had been told on the phone that it was a 5-course set menu at $80 for the first seating. Later on when I was confirming, I was told that it was only 4 courses for the earlier seating, consisting of 2 appetizers from the menu, a main and a dessert and the price was listed at $90, not $80. Once there, our server told us that it was 3 courses plus an ""amuse bouche,"" which was a taste of soup in an espresso cup, hardly a 4th course! The appetizer was tiny, but was expected to be so. However, I was able to eat my main course in 3 small mouthfuls. The dessert was larger than the main course, but small as well. We left $360 lighter and had to stop to pick up food to go on the way home since we were both still starving. The food is tasty, but nowhere near satisfying. Be warned! Pros: Ambience, good wine list, nice cocktails. Cons: Ridiculously small portions, inconsistent service, no value for money. more

Danger, Danger! Poor Service, High Prices 12/7/2006

This restaraunt used to be my favorite place to dine in San Francisco, in fact, probably in the US. I have been going there for years. As of late, the service seems to have taken a serious nose dive. Boulevard has to be in the top 50 (or less) restaraunts in the US. I don't think someone should be allowed to work as wait staff in a place of this caliber, and with these prices, unless they are the cream of the crop. Boulevard is now severely missing the mark in the service department and for no aparent reason. There must be an underlying cause, and whatever it is, it shows big time. I think they are riding on ratings now, and they will book up every night, so they just don't seem to care any more. As a local, I will never eat there again, nor will my frequent dining companions. We are sick of it. I will spend my hard earned money at a place that treats me well, not a place that treats me like I am lucky to be served by them. Sorry, Nancy. You lose this time. Pros: location Cons: very small portions and BAAAAAD service more

Good for the Price 12/2/2006

The food is good and reasonably priced. It's good that it isn't a pri fix menu so I could control how much I wanted to spend on my email. I had the Waldorf Chocolate cake for dessert and it was buy far one of the best desserts I have ever had! more

consistantly consistant 11/17/2006

i cant say enough about this experience...honestly, i have been going here for years now and i am never disappointed. the dining room is always a welcome retreat....the waitstaff is never condesending...blood sausage??? they will be happy to share with you details, anything you ask. it makes it very easy to try new things and not feel like an idiot for asking. my guests are always impressed. i often dine with a sous chef from sonoma county and for her to be impressed, it says alot....have at it!!! Pros: ambience, food, service Cons: none!! more

Boulevard ""Bussing Bullys?"" 11/3/2006

Ok, here goes... I submitted this comment on their website and asked the owner to please email me when she received it. No response. So: six of us for lunch. We didn't arrive all on time, so we were not able to order drinks all at the same time. We did finally get into lunch, and I have to say, SMALL PORTIONS! Also, the wait staff grabbed plates and glasses before they were even empty. Is there a plate shortage in the kitchen? Well, BUY MORE PLATES! We had to scold them to stop it. The waitress... jeez. I wanted to ask her to take the day off. She was so dispassionate about what she was doing, I thought she might fall asleep. In fact, it took us from 11:30 until 2:15 to drink, eat, have dessert, and pay the bill. Far too long of a lunch... the food? Well, like I said, SMALL PORTIONS. Not worth it, sorry. I ordered the pork loin and I got four little itty bitty round pieces... man... that was a small piggy alright! Atmosphere, sure, it was great, but the service and the food... eh... let's call it ""so so."" I'm glad my company was treating me. I would go elsewhere with my own dollars. --- LATE BREAKING NEWS! This is a follow-on comment to this critique: apparently the restaurant did try to reply to me, but there was a mixup. The restaurant took my commentary very seriously and is taking every effort to ensure that my experience never repeats at Boulevard. I'm upgrading from Below Average to Average. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Lackluster, dispassionate service, small portions more

Beautiful Spot. Decent Food - But Not Enough of It! 10/9/2006

I loved the decor of this snazzy restaurant in a gorgeous French revival building footsteps from the bay. It makes a great first impression. Unfortunately I was not able to fill my stomach despite spending over $35 a person for lunch (I am 5'11, 165 and no over-eater). We had a cute little tuna tartare appetizer that was nicely done with ruby red fresh tomatoes. I ordered the Paella, thinking hearty lunch, sizable portion. Wrong! There was so little on the plate it felt like Chez Panisse back in the day--but Alice Waters at least quietly doled out seconds. I think for $21 there should have been quite a bit more rice and some more seafood. It was delicious but too much of a splurge for too little. My friend had a Thai salad that was a better size but the components did not seem to pull together well. He had a couple of very small tasteless fried chicken wings. I snagged one off his plate because I was in survival mode. Dessert list was uninspired and the server definitely was standoffish when pressed about which would be best. We ordered none. The wine list is a very good one and the markups were reasonable - about 2x what you would pay at a wine merchant like K&L. There are better places downtown but this is pretty and if your company or date is paying, then you could enjoy it. Pros: Beautiful ambiance. Good service. Nice wine list. Cons: Very small portions. Poor value. more

Superb, wonderful!!!! 10/5/2006

As my conpanion noted, this may have been the best meal she's ever had. We sat at the counter which allows you to watch the kitchen in action. If you're a foodie this is great entertainment. All of the things we had were amazing, but the caprese type salad with a mozarella that was hard on the outside and almost like yoghurt on the inside was to die for. The counter is first come first served so, even if you don't have reservations, it's worth taking a chance. Really wonderful! Pros: Great service, great food! Cons: Busy and expensive more

Great upscale restaurant for special occasions 9/30/2006

A landmark for San Francisco cuisine. The food is spectacular from first to last course, though lately the servings have gotten smaller while the plates have gotten larger. The Belle Epoque ambience with sconces, mosaic floors and ceilings, wooden bar, and Embarcadero front views entice. The service is stellar from the front reservations greeters to the waiters, sommelier, and bartender. Highly recommended if your budget can afford it. more
