Best Summer Spot 10/30/2006

Great in the summer in the back yard. Huge open space, many different beers. Burgers and dogs and 'basa. Go every now and again with half a dozen friends and chill and drink. Pros: Tons of outdoor seating, food, great beer selection. Cons: No service outside, but not really a con. more

Real winner !!!! 10/25/2006

That's where I'd park my car!..and set a camping site for few days! Place is HUGE. The more surprising it's been handled and carried with success. Pros: All thumbs UP!!!!! Cons: Unpredictably crowded (or not) at weekends more

Great Outdoors, Not So Great Indoors 10/15/2006

When we arrived there were only a few of us in the inner (old) bar-- around since 1880. It looked like some of the original customers were still drinking there. There was also a loud jockish football crowd, a loud TV and a waitress who was... er... less than attentive. We quickly made friends with Brian, the doorman/bouncer, who proved to be an instant pal and great addition to the bar. After we moved outside, he kept an eye out for our slowly entering crew, saving more than one from missing the place. Pros: Friendly atmosphere, great live music, great beer Cons: the service isn't more

Great Place 9/27/2006

I too like anti-Semitic below was born and raised in NYC (Manhattan). I think it's a shame she is judging this wonderful establishment on one evening. I am of Puerto Rican decent and enjoy the diversity in Astoria. Your issue with civil liberties has nothing to do with this establishment (go lobby if you have a problem) but don't condemn a place I've enjoyed for years and will tell you this was an isolated incident...great beer, great people and great food. Pros: Variety of Beer and great place to meet new people Cons: Can get crowded at times more

anti-Semitic-- DO NOT RECOMMEND 8/28/2006

I was born and raised in NY and I know am lucky to have never had such a frightening and disgusting ant-semitic experience-- a group of young men were taking pictures of themselves making the heil hitler sign and were heard saying that they hated jewish people My boyfriend, who is not jewish, confronted them and they said that they just hated jewish people and could do whatever they wanted. We reported it to the bartender and nothing happened. We left and were outside and then returned to see that nothing happened. We called 911 and 311 and were told that they could do whatever they wanted as they were not threatening us personally. I thought I supported civil liberties; I am a public school teacher and I am a liberal, but I do not want to support hateful views or people. Do you? Be careful of this repulsive place. Pros: cool Cons: ant-semetic, scary more

Uninterrupted Beer Flow 8/22/2006

I've never seen anything like it in any of the NYC bars. The outdoor garden is akin to small Central European city park. You got to come with a group and occupy one of the picnic tables. If you come with a small group, I am sure you can strike up a conversation in a beer line or the food line. Their kielbasa is to die for. :-) more

Going downhill... 7/17/2006

I usesd to LOVE this place. Inexpensive pitchers, diverse crowd, lots of space. However, recently there always seems to be a line, not because there are more people, but because they are letting fewer people in at a time. I hate waiting in line outside then going in and waiting in line to get beer and waiting in another line to get food. It's getting ridiculous. The security seems unnecessary (although I appreciate that you never know in large crowds) but they act like they're about to stop some serious crime and there are more of them than necessary. The cost of pitchers has gone way up $14... still not out of control, but for Astoria where there are 1000 people there at a time it makes the trip less worth it. Also, the major benefit of being outside has been hindered by the arrival of very large open-air tents, I'm assuming so that they don't lose a buck when it rains. I don't like it at all though, it changes the atmsophere for the worse. Pros: Different for a NYC bar Cons: LINES! more

A great place on a Sunday afternoon 6/11/2006

We just discovered this place this past Sunday, and we had a great time! Great food & great beer and the atmosphere is so laid back. We brought some board games, watched the World Cup, read the Sunday papers, and enjoyed ourselves for hours! We will definitely be back! Pros: outdoor seating, great beer Cons: long wait for beer & food more

Can't believe it's Astoria! 6/1/2006

When you want to get out of town in the summer, but you just can't get your ducks in a row, this is the next best thing. Grab a group of friends, go on a Saturday afternoon (you'll wait on line around the block past 6:30pm) and plop your bum down at a picknic table. Make sure to bring at least one deck of cards (or back gammon...pick your poison). The food is great! The beer is great! The place is huge! You won't believe that you are in the city! Pros: Like being in Europe, Spacious outside Cons: Far from everything, Only in good weather, Make a day of it more

We had the best wedding there! 4/10/2006

We lived in the neighborhood, loved the place, and wanted to be able to afford to invite all of our friends and family. The staff could not have been more helpful, particularly Maria and the head chef. Everyone loved the Czech food, and after our time in the hall was up we all filtered into the garden for a few more hours of merriment. The 2am burger from the outdoor grill, eaten in my gown while sitting on the stone steps was the perfect topper to a perfect wedding... more

A taste of the country in Queens 10/27/2005

I live nearby. Come here all the time. They BBQ kielbasa and cheeseburgers and have a huge selection of imported beer on tap. My favorite is Spaten. All of the Hefeviezens are good too. The crowd is really layed back. It really is a great place. Pros: Crowd, Beer selection more

Great Brithday! 8/22/2005

I just celebrated my birthday at beer garden on friday with a big group and we all loved that place! Such a great atmosphere in the middle of the city! I have heard a lot about it and will talk a lot about it too:) we are definetly going there again. The bar staff seemed kinda unhappy to be working there that night, they dont talk or smile but it could be something cultural, i dunno. Keep in mind that you need to give them at least 2-day notice to cut a birthday cake..seriously! Pros: atmosphere, beer, garden more

Great time every time I go 7/5/2005

I've been here several times, and everytime I love it! I've taken family members from out of town, and even dragged friends from Manhattan here, and they all agree its worth the commute and a great time! If the outside grill isn't open or you want something from the menu, then expect to wait. They are a little short staffed. The food is great though, and the cheap beer helps to pass the time! The food is definitely worth the wait...a friend of mine who spent some time in the Czech agrees this place rocks! Pros: Cheap beer, Good food, Fun atmosphere Cons: Service can be slow more

Good for beer lovers 5/29/2005

Everyone else has mentioned the great outdoor garden and beer selection, so I won't rehash that too much more. What you should be aware of is that when its packed, food may take a while; especially if the outdoor grills are not going yet and thier tiny kitchen is responsible for the hundreds of patrons. If you have the time and patience, the traditional Czech cuisine is ""right off the boat"", but if you're like me, just stick to the beer. Pros: Beer selection, Cultural experience, Outdoor seating Cons: Slow food service more

Completely Honest Review 5/14/2004

sat on this place for ages. i never find myself in queens but figured id stop by since i was in the area last night. decent bar indoors that opens up into this massive outdoor hall...gotta be 500 people drinking beers and hanging out. had a great time...good beers, everyone having a good time...places like this are few and far between here in nyc...enjoy it. Pros: great atmosphere, good beer more

coolest place in astoria! 3/4/2004

definately the best place to hang out in nice weather. huge outside seating area, great in you want to get a nice pack of friends together and enjoy some very reasonably priced (and quite delisious(sp?)) beer. two thumbs up! Pros: wide beer selection, huge outside, nice people more

astoria's finest 2/15/2004

come for the czechvar, stay for the fried cheese.. and if you're lucky you'll catch some gymnasts practicing across from the bathrooms. very much worth the hike to astoria!! Pros: fried cheese, cheap beer, huge "garden" more

it's summertime!!! 6/25/2003

just visited the ""Beer Garden"" (that's what everyone that I know calls it) last night to help celebrate the fact that the rain has finally stopped. cool, laid back atmosphere...good mix of people...great place to hangout on a nice summer night. don't go expecting too much, though. Outdoor grill servers burgers, hot dogs, chicken, kielbasa and portobello mushrooms. that's it, nothing else. but what more do you need on a nice night in Astoria? except a cold drink, and they have those, too. Pros: huge outdoor area, laid back atmosphere Cons: REALLY limited menu more

Beer, fresh air, Fun! 10/9/2002

This is my favorite watering hole. Where else can you be surrounded by trees, get good beer and kielbasa? Definately a staple of the Astoria communtiy and thankfully around for generations. Pros: Inexpensive, Outdoors, Fun more

i love this place 9/20/2002

this is one of my favorite bars in the city. ok, it might help that it's 3 blocks away from my apartment. but i NEVER fail to have a good time here. the pitchers are cheap and the outdoor seating is totally conducive to meeting people. everyone's always in such a good mood! more
