Best beer garden in the 5 boroughs? 8/8/2011

You like being outside, relaxing with friends, all while you eat yummy grilled food and enjoy pitchers of your favorite beverage? Then why aren't you here? I know, Astoria is ridiculously out of the way, but Bohemian makes the trip totally worth it. more

GREAT BEER AND GOOD FOOD 1/23/2011

LOVE GOING HERE FOR THE KILBASA AND BEER. MY FRIENDS AND I FREQUENT HERE ALMOST EVERY WEEKEND. WE LIVE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. IT DOES GET A LITTLE CROWDED SO ITS HARD TO FIND A SEAT SOMETIMES. ITS A GREAT PLACE TO MEET NEW PEOPLE WHO SHARE THE SAME LOVE FOR BEER AND SAUSAGE!! RECOMMEND TO ALL WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A GOOD PLACE TO HAVE A GREAT TIME. more

Best place in NYC to hang w/friends minus recent annoyances 7/9/2010

I resisted coming here for so long because it was in Queens. But the truth is, almost everywhere that is good in Manhattan gets way too crowded (think happy hour at Frying Pan) and this place is a short subway ride from midtown. The outdoor courtyard is spacious and doesn't get oppressively crowded post-work on the weekdays (weekends can get crowded but IMO not as bad as Manhattan places). The beer garden has a great laid-back vibe where you can hang out with your friends. Many nights they have live music too. Plus the food/drink prices are much better than Manhattan too! The last time I went there were some changes that were annoying. I don't know if this is a temporary thing, but there were girls roving the tables selling shots. They were pretty persistent too (for instance, when we said no thank you she started questioning how much we had drank, saying we weren't drinking enough) and by the fifth time they came to our table it was just downright annoying. There was also a bathroom attendant in the womens bathroom... this isn't a club??!! I noticed they also started doing bag checks too... wonder if it 's a sign of times to come? Anyway, despite the minor annoyances, I still highly recommend this place! Pros: Outdoor courtyard, prices Cons: Shot girls, Bathroom attendant more

Too much hype, not enough quality. 10/24/2009

We were were let down when we found out they were only serving 25% of the items on the menu because they didnt prepare their winter menu. I know beer, and I know how beer should taste. Something was wrong because all the beer we ordered was flat and tasteless. Service is slow, and when you need a check or want to order extra you are left waiting because one waitress is hosting more tables than she can handle. My friend ordered the beef goulash, and by the time we got outside she was puking her guts out. She was the only one that had the dish. Im sad to say I think it looked better on its way out then in. I regret going, but the only thing that didnt make me want to cry by the end of the night was the cheap check. Pros: Cheap Cons: Bad food, flat beer, slow service, and food poisoning more

BEER GARDEN BABY!!! 4/28/2009

Where else in NYC can you sit outdoors in huge beer garden with a 1000 other people, drinking great hard-to-find eastern european beer for a good price? It's about 2 blocks from the Astoria Blvd subway stop off the N train...Friday and Saturday nights are crowded if you get there after 7, but always a good time. The crowd is pretty easy-going and mixed but mostly people in their 20's and 30's. I live 2 blocks away and been here like 50 times at all times of the night and I've never ever seen one fight ever break out (or maybe I just too drunk to see! lol) The pitchers this year are now $15 (up from $14 last year), but that's still good for about 4 pints in a pitcher- a great deal! There's a bar inside, and at nights they open one or two bars outside in the Garden too if it gets really crowded for easier drinking access. It's more of a place to hang with friends than a meat market but its easy to meet people from everywhere. The Staropremen beer's my favorite...on tap and cold.. delicious! Ignore any negative posts here, they're mostly from clowns and amateurs. Bring some of your buddies, get a couple pitchers, enjoy the crowd and weather and have an awesome time!!! Pros: Great beer, easy-going crowd, I live 2 blocks away more

It's still fun, no matter what 2/18/2009

Warm-weather place to be, even if it does get a bit crowded these days. Still great prices and great outdoor garden for drinking pitchers with friends. There is always a restaurant, although I have never eaten anything here besides the sausages available at the outdoor kiosk grill, which are excellent (if a bit expensive). A side of humongous seasoned fries ($4) is a steal! more

Great beer/atmosphere, don't recommend the food 8/26/2008

Skip the food, it's expensive and not very good. The beer is awesome though and it's a very social easy going atmosphere. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Food more

How I miss those days 7/29/2008

This place is amazing. it is such a great time we keep going back regardless of the fact it is becoming more and more like a tourist attraction. Before this place was written up on sites and in magazines, you could go there on a Friday night find a table, get a beer in a reasonable amount of time, and actually hear what the person across from you was saying without yelling. The food is great and if you like to meet new people it is the best place to go. I just wish they would make a night where only Queens and Brooklyn residents would be allowed in. Pros: Great Beer, Good Times, Lots of Laughs Cons: To many Non Residents more

The best outdoor bar in New York 6/13/2008

On a warm night, there is no better place to take a group of friends. Wide open, boisterous, friendly, fun. more

Ignore all bad reviews! 5/25/2008

I've never not had fun at this place, and I kind of doubt it's possible. You know about the huge drinking playground and reasonable prices, but what really makes this place special is the cross-section of people who hang out here. On any given night, you'll run into college kids, school teachers (me, for example) corporate types getting to know their colleagues better, huge Eastern European families, and maybe even your favorite great-aunt. The shared seating at picnic tables guarantees that you will mingle with them all. more

I Miss Prague 5/11/2008

I love coming to Bohemian Hall because it reminds me of my days living in Prague. Sitting outside, in the sunshine, drinking excellent Czech beer, eating yummy klobasa and rye bread, and having good conversations with friends and new acquaintances. That said, I recommend going on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon around 3, when it is easy to get in and there are shorter waits for pitchers/food. I've been a few times on a Saturday night, and it requires real patience, first in line to get in, then for beer, then for food, then for the bathroom. Pitchers are very reasonably priced for the selection of quality beers on tap, and the grilled food really hits the spot. Also try the fried cheese dish on the restaurant menu, it's excellent! A downside is the location as Astoria is a stretch from a lot of neighborhoods in Brooklyn/Manhattan if you don't have a car. But I'm just glad this gem isn't deeper into Queens. It's definitely worth the trek. Pros: Beer selection, Grilled food, Huge outdoor space Cons: Location, Long waits on weekend nights more

PITCHERS! 11/18/2007

I've only been here twice--once during the summer, once in the close-to-winter fall. Both times I enjoyed myself. The outside is gorgeous and a reason to go on its own, even if you hate beer. But if you LOVE beer, you'll love being able to get a pitcher of some good Euro beer for $15. That pans out to about $4 a beer, which is a steal to Manhattanites. Just gotta get yourself out to Astoria for this. Pros: hoegaarden on tap Cons: if you drive, i think it's hard to find parking more

Avoid on Weekend Nights 8/6/2007

Despite living close nearby, I've only been here a handful of times. It's not that I dislike the outdoor beer hall atmosphere, or the fact that it's a great place to meet up with a bunch of friends, or even the NYC-priced beer. It's the crowds. I highly recommend NOT coming here on a Friday or Saturday night in the summertime. All four times I've gone at night, it's at least a half hour wait to get inside. Once inside, lines to get beer seem just as long! It is also apparent that the security guards highly dislike their jobs. Odd incident last time there: while in wicked long line, witnessed near physical altercation between one security guard following after an angry patron , who was screaming obscenities. The other security guard, holding back his coworker, left the entry gate unmanned, allowing most of the line to pour in, further frustrating both guards. By the time we got to the gate, the party in front of us allowed us to go first, since a friend of theirs was yet to arrive. The security guards, not understanding what just happened, got in our faces about cutting line. I wouldn't have mentioned all this, but I've heard the same from friends, and the other review, so thought it necessary. My advice: watch ""Soup Natsi"" episode of Seinfeld and treat guards with likewise respect. Pros: Outdoors, Great for Group of Friends Cons: Weekend Night Crowds + Frustrated Guards = no fun for anyone more

Spaten All the way 8/3/2007

Awesome outdoor. Yeah it can get crowded and noisy if you try to get in on a friday night at 10, but get there a lil before that, get a pitcher of their draft beer, grab a table and you are golden for the night. Don't miss out on the BBQ stuff on the corner of the garden. Pros: Outdoor! Good european draft beer selection Cons: Crowded on weekends more

Bad attitudes 7/15/2007

The security guys here need an attitude check. There's no need to be rude and treat customers poorly. They would be better off investinbg their energy in railing in the obnoxious frat boy types. If you want to skip the ridiculous line out the front, sneak in through the door that provides entry to the inside bar. You can't miss it. There's a sign on the door that says ""Please Enter Through Main Gate."" Pros: beer Cons: attitude more

Most fun outdoor spot, no onlookers 6/21/2007

Because of the walls around the picnic tables, you don't have to put up with onlookers if you don't feel like it. It's a really refreshing place to hang out for a few hours and feel removed from the rest of the world. Pros: outdoors baby Cons: sometimes it rains more

Bad Customer Service and Bad Food 6/5/2007

It was great until I found out that they let go of the greatest night manager who always try to satisfy every customer. A night manager who cared about his customers. If you needed help in anything he made sure you got the service that you need. Now, It the worst place to be in, the lines are soooo long to get in. The staff is very rude including the managers like they don't care about the customers. Don't they know without customer there no business. The long lines just to get a beer is about a half hour to an hour. People always bumping into each other. People always fist fighting. The food is not so great, I even found a fly and a piece of hair in my goulash. Trying to find a waitress takes about an hour just to get some service and even if you found a waitess they ignore or tell you ""That not my section"" . The Restrooms are so disgusting like toliet paper all over the floors, on the toliet, and piled over in the garbage. The restrooms smells really bad that you feel like you are going to pass out because the urine is all over the floors, toliet and walls. One day I was really drunk and the bartenders kept on serving me and try to charge me more money for a beer. I was an regular customer, I remember when I spent a hundred dollars and didn't get a buyback. I also think that the people who owns this company is discriminate against other nationalities. I've seen the staff giving nasty looks and treating other nationalities besides their own with disrespect like we are not worthy to come in this beer garden. I wish someone else can open another beer garden that don't have any of the problems that Bohemian Hall has. The staff needs to get some customer service knowledge. If they don't like to serve other nationalities then they should not be in United States. Take my advice go somewhere else where customer service is 100% better and they don't discriminate people just because your not a Czech or Slovak. Without us there won't be a Bohemian Hall. Cons: Managment and the staff are unprofessional more

Unique Location 1/10/2007

I love the beer garden. The outside seating is such a unique find in NYC and the crowd is always fun. The best part of the garden is the outdoor bbq. There is nothing like a flame broiled burger or kielbasa to go along with a couple of pints. Pros: Beer Selection, outdoor seating Cons: Gets crowded on weekend nights more

great beer on tap, get there early when its nice out 11/20/2006

great great great place to get my drink of choice..hoegarden with lemon. This place always has an interesting mix of people, the food isnt even bad. But people come here for the beer. I took two friends here and they were stunned at the size of the backyard and the fact that nobody really cares how long you stay. Find a picnic table and start the party. Price are cheap as hell $12 for a pitcher and its right next to the train Pros: hoegarden, prices Cons: gets packed quickly when its hot out more

Best kept secret in New York 11/16/2006

This place rocks. Take a big group of friends and you can't not have a good time. They have great beers on tap by the pitcher, and they gril kielbasa and burgers out back where there are ample picnic tables to accommodate all of its fans. It's DEFINITELY worth the trip to Queens. Pros: Best place for a summer drink Cons: The hike to Queens more
