Best

During a recent visit to BOA on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, we indulged in their 5 - 7 PM weekday...

Worst

Food was so overrated. I will give them the kudos for decor, ambiance and service. Our waiter was great and the bus-boy couldn't top feeding us bread. But we ordered 2 glasses of ...

Top Notch and Dry Aged 4/24/2004

Great steaks. From the 40 Day Dry Aged NY Strip to the Ostrich...really a fantastic and fun experience. Sometimes difficult to get a reservation but you are never rushed out the door. We had a great 3 hour dinner and were never pushed to relinquish our table on a busy Saturday night. I'm a big fan of not only Balboa but Katana and Sushi Roku. These people know how to run a restaurant. more

Great Steaks!! Cool place! 3/14/2004

Very cool steakhouse with high quality meats! I had the $65 Kobe steak with the brazilian sauce and my wife had the $36 Kansas fillet with the cabernet sauce. I think i liked the kansas fillet better! The kobe wasnt as perfectly marbled and tender as the ones i had in tokyo, Bangkok and Manila.(to think Kobe is from US cattle!) But, The Kansas filet was awesome. I cant wait to try the 40day dry aged NY Strip or the Porterhouse. I love Peter Luger steakhouse & I think this place comes close to the quality! The steaks are a little salty for my taste though...but it has a lot of flavor. We had the veggie plate for sides and it was a lot of food. I should leave space for dessert next time. Love this place...but save the $$ on the Kobe steak. Pros: Cool lounge atmospher, Hi quality steaks!, good wine selection Cons: , can get crowded more

Romantic Restaurant 2/27/2004

I found the restaurant through city search and went their for Valentine's Day and loved it. They even had Valentine's Day specials. The lighting and music were perfect and the waitress came around enough times to check on us. The food was better than expected! I would recommend this restaurant to others and plan on going back myself. Pros: Cozy Atmosphere more

A solid steakhouse 2/9/2004

Resisting the temptation of so many places on Sunset to be more hype than substance, Balboa has excellent cuts of meat, not a lot of 'tude, good salads, good sides and a nice wine selection which was/is half price on Sundays. (But this restaurant has no business in any ""fine dining"" category with the likes of L'Orangerie. It's a totally different animal). Pros: Great steaks, Minimal 'tude, Good wines more

Prime Steaks 1/27/2004

I have dined at many of the best Steak Houses in the country, from NYC to Chicago, etc. Balboa beats out almost all of them, plus adds a twist on the typical Steak House. You can tell that the owner cares about the full experience of the guest and that means the service is on and the place is cool. Overall a great experience every time. Pros: Prime dry-aged, stylish, great service more

Suttlties 12/26/2003

My most recent dinner at Balboa came 2 weeks ago. The service seemed off that night. I had trouble getting a worthwhile reccomendation on wine, which the server seemingly only would reccomend one that costs at least $70 and up. The manager that night was downright complacent to any of my remarks. It was just ok. And if Im spending $150 on 2 people, I want more than that. The food was good, but the steak temperatures were off. Reservation was late, but hostess were friendly. Pros: Friendliness, Hostesses more

A Great Place to Eat! 10/7/2003

You must be there on Sunday night for their Wine Lovers special. The wine list is half-price! Had dinner there on 10/5 and it was excellent. Fantastic service and great food. The bone-in filet was a bit tough but the porterhouse was perfect. Super table-side preparation of the Cesar salad. This is a must-visit place with a fun crowd and super service. I will be back! Pros: Service, Selection, Sunday Wine Specials more

Love the blue cheese rub! 10/2/2003

I ordered a Kasas City bone-in steak with blue cheese rub, it was simply excellent! I also had the ""cookie and ice-cream"" (forgot what it was called on the menu) as dessert and it was very good too. The wait staff at the restaurant and the bartender at the lounge were all nice and friendly. You must make a reservation though as the restaurant is always quite busy. Pros: Steak, Service, Resonable price more

Good and cheap 7/28/2003

I wouldnt exactly say cheap, but the food is veryyyy reasonable. Especially if you eat during lunch, sandwiches are just about $10 each. The steak sandwich was really good, with contrasting tastes of the beefm, peppers and vinegar. Had the jumbo cookie with ice cream for dessert, and it was good too. Though very small, the restaurant is nicely decorated and has a nice loungey feel. Total for 2 people during lunch (pre-tax and tip) only $53. Waiters really nice and attentive too. Pros: Good food, Reasonable Prices, Great Service Cons: Hard to Park, Limited menu more

yum 6/25/2003

I have eaten at Balboa at least 10 times and I have had a wonderful meal each time. The sevice is great and the food is really the best. Have the NY steak! You wont find a better steak in this town! Pros: Food Cons: always packed more

Second to None 5/20/2003

I've eaten here many times and I'm NEVER disappointed. The food, service and ambience makes me feel like royalty. Please don't ever change and keep up the great work! Pros: Service, Food, Wine Cons: Expensive, Parking more

Great Place 4/18/2003

I went to Balboa restaurant and lounge on a weekday. The food was and service were great. However, the food and drinks are over priced. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. The lounge is very cozy and not too crowded. I will definitely be visiting this place again...well, at least the lounge. Pros: Excellent Staff, Lounge Cons: Small dining area, Over priced more

Bar/Lounge Review 4/7/2003

Went to Balboa bar/lounge on a Saturday. My food review is based on the drinks. I only ordered non-alcoholic drinks and they didn't taste good. BUT, the service was great. The crowd is mixed. Early thirties, chilled, very laid back. Leather sofas and lounges to rest on. The door guys are very cool, very friendly. Great house/ambient music piping through. Cool interior. Just a good mellow spot to chill and people watch. Surprisingly chilled and mellow for Sunset Blvd. Pros: door guys, interior Cons: non-alcoholic drinks more

Best of the New Steak Houses 4/2/2003

While traveling nationwide, I always dine at the latest steak houses. Balboa has to be the best in this new trend of modern style steak houses. With a menu made up of classic dishes like a table-side Caesar Salad to a great selection of Prime Cuts, Balboa offers outstanding food and wine without the typical Red Booths and stuffy attitude. Praises to Balboa. Pros: Meat Quality, Service, Wine List more

Best Steak 3/17/2003

For the women out there that love a good steak but can't deal with the old school steak house, Balboa has become the perfect blend of great food, service and ambience. Girls night out at Balboa is our favorite. Thanks Pros: Style, Caesar Salad, NY Steak more

What Happened??? 3/7/2003

I first visited Balboa in November of 2001 on a business trip to LA. I fell in love with the food, despite the service and uncomfortable dining room. I am originally from Chicago and now live in NYC, so I am rather familiar with great steaks and Chef Morales made me the best Bleu cheese crusted 40 day bone-in filet I have ever had!! So, last week I came back to visit and found out the not only is the Chef gone but the food it terrible! They must have not only changed the kitchen staff but the meat company too! Can anyone tell me where I can now find a Chef Morales steak?? Pros: Not any more Cons: Food, Service, Ambience more

Best Kept Secret 1/13/2003

Excellent Quality Food, fine menu, great ambiance, Spectacular Desserts. A great place for dinner for 2 or a large group Pros: Romantic, Diverse Menu more

Very very addictive..cook to perfection 1/12/2003

Most of the time i visisted here, steaks were cook to perfection. Chef knows how to cook and prepare the steak.... All hostess and waiters will provide you with 5star service. seats are too tight and other guests are too close. However, it's so loud that you don't have worry about someone e-s dropping on u. And I like table side ceasar salad and all deserts. Pros: perfect meat, good looking hostess, good wine selection Cons: crowded, expensive more

Must Visit 12/4/2002

When in LA, you must go to Balboa. Our favorite when we're here. Coming from New York, it's hard to compare with our steaks. Balboa is as good as Peter Lugers but with a beautiful atmosphere and not the stuffy service. Try the rib eye or the new york and the Mac N Cheese side. more

Balboa bound, again 11/22/2002

I am consistenlty awed by the food and service at Balboa. The forty day dry aged New York strip melts like butter in your mouth. Every appetizer is creative and delicious. The sides are reminiscent of old school steak house sides, but updated just enough to keep you interested. The award winning wine list is extensive but not pretentious. I'm a huge fan of Balboa for both the food and the service. Nowhere in LA have I experienced such professional, courteous and welcoming servers as at Balboa. Every server I've had has been well versed regarding the menu as well as the wine list, and if there is ever any question, the manager, Brent, instantly appears at your table side to recommend the perfect wine to compliment your meal. It's great to know that LA is truly becoming a foodie town. Pros: food, service, wine list more
