TO DIE FOR: Black Muddy River Cake\r Also: Milky Way (a mocha-like coffee)\r \r They have a pretty good breakfast/lunch/dinner but come for the dessert. I have never had a problem with service as long as you are there before the closing hours (they will not seat you after). more

Racists, very rude servers. 10/19/2010

They are racists. Servers and rude and threatened to refuse service on asking anything. Beware of server – Courdney. \r \r I loved this place for many years but the new staff is racist and super rude. The white woman server(Courdney I think) is extremely rude. She refused to clarify any questions we had for the groupon \r we had, Then she acted very dramatic and rude. She threatened us to refuse service, and when asked another clarification, she said she would call cops. That totally did not make sense to us. I \r wish we had let her call cops and mentioned we victims of this behavior due to our race(Indian). \r They got the lease extended due to people's support but this change is certainly not good and people can try to experience this for themselves but they will loose the support by having servers like \r her. \r \r I am sad I have to stop going to this place but I don’t want to go here to deal with their arrogance and misbehavior of new staff members.\r Food is not good anymore either. Hope this saves you from experiencing what we experienced. \r more

Best Pastry in Seattle 7/18/2010

We love B&O. My husband's favorite is the German Chocolate Cake. He says it's the only true German Chocolate Cake he's found in Seattle/Eastside as long as he's been here (20+ years). We try to get a whole cake for his birthday every year. One of my favorites is the lemon pie. Sweet, tart, and lusciously smooth. The B&O has eclectic and unusual food offerings as well, but we don't get to Seattle often and we wouldn't miss dessert at B&O. The atmosphere is a little funk and cozy. A totally engaging atmosphere in which to drink coffee, chat, read a book, or just hang out and enjoy the food. Pros: Beautiful, delectable desserts; great atmosphere Cons: Service can be slow more

Best Weekend Brunch in Capitol Hill 7/10/2010

On the corner of Belmont & Olive is one of Capitol Hill's\r longest running dining establishments. Owners & Hosts Majid and Jane offer a varied menu featuring traditional breakfast and brunch egg dishes along with more exotic brunch preparations such as Shakshuka or ""Eggs in Purgatory"" as well as ""Beni Thai"" eggs Benedict (think eggs benedict on top of a sticky rice crab cake). \r On the weekend chef Marta cooks Mexican brunch specials consisting of traditional rustic colonial dishes from her home country of Mexico. These are not to be missed as many customers go just to eat Marta's cooking.\r If you are in the mood for something lighter try one of the exceptional coffee drinks and a fruit platter or slice of Budapest coffee cake. \r In a nod to the owner's Jordanian heritage there are several middle eastern preparations sprinkled throughout the menu. The Hummus platter is the best in the city and the Egyptian Foul, is a delicious preparation of pureed fava beans drizzled with olive oil and served with pita bread for dipping.\r This is a delightful place to entertain out-of-town company and there is something on the menu for every taste.\r \r Pros: Outdoor Patio Seating & Large Atmospheric Dining Room more

Delicious Desserts 6/11/2010

The desserts are fantastic and the atmosphere is casual. I would recommend the espresso as well. more

Perfect for a Cozy Date and Dessert 1/29/2010

My husband and I always come here for Valencia mochas. They are the absolute best. We love to come here, split a cake. Our favorite is Black Muddy River, it's really delicious, but very rich. It's definitely a slice to split. And the orange liqueur in the cake pairs nicely with the Valencia mochas. I can't say anything on the the non-dessert food as I only come here for dessert and coffee. I suggest coming here after a movie.\r \r The atmosphere is most appropriate for cozy one-on-on dinners, but also excellent for small groups. It's very dark, with candles on all of the tables and random paraphernalia on the walls.\r \r I subtracted a star as we had a rather snobby waitress on a calm Tuesday night and it kind of broke the mood. But other than that I will keep coming back for cake! Pros: Best valencia mocha, delicious cakes, snuggly atmosphere Cons: Some servers are snobby more

Went for birthday cake 1/1/2010

White chocolate cake was amazing the butter cream was perfect. The cake remained firm yet moist. The raspberry sauce was tart and perfect compliment to both desserts. The mousse was light and smooth. Portions were ideal. Good first visit. Will give fifth star if second experience is equally as pleasing. Thanks! Pros: Cake and Mousse! Cons: none yet more

Fun place, great food 8/22/2009

My husband and I had been planning to get married for about a year and then one day we decided to get married within a week...why prolong the stress of planning a wedding! We heard B & O made delicious cakes, so we called them. Who would have ever thought a place named B & O Espresso would have great wedding cakes? They met with us the next day, gave us samples to try of their different cakes and showed us a photo album of lots of cakes they had made in the past. They were so beautiful it was hard to decide but we didn't have time to labor over the details! We chose a chocolate raspberry tort cake with light periwinkle frosting, a cream colored piping design, with live periwinkle blue flowers and cream colored roses. They make the fresh raspberry sauce themselves and put it in as a filling between the layers of cake along with the whipped cream icing. OMG! It was wonderful, decadent, delicious and they delivered it to the place we were getting married and set it up, ready to be served. It was beautiful and not at all like the dry, tasteless wedding cakes people usually serve. Even our photographer who does a couple hundred weddings a year said it was the best wedding cake she had ever had. Try them, you will be pleased! Pros: Best Wedding Cakes and other desserts Cons: difficult parking more

Fantastic Happy Hour and new Bar is Brilliant 6/26/2009

B & O has moved their bar upstairs right off Olive Way (called Bar 41). They have one of the absolute best Happy Hours in the city; the prices and drinks are fantastic.\r \r I am terribly, terribly picky about my drinks ( the liquor, how the drink is made and price). B & O is the only place which has done brilliant in each category. I don't want a fancy $12 new-fangled, mangled, foo-foo drink (hello Poppy), it has to taste good and be well made. The bartender, Ashley, is a brilliant drink-mixer and great person to have behind the bar; no snooty attitudes here. \r The new bar food, sliders, are tasty and cheap, a great addition to the menu.\r \r Even better, B&O has added on a second Happy hour in the later evening. Did I mention all HH drinks are $2 off? That is the way a Happy Hour should be---not like those fake happy hours at bars where the bartender choses which god-awful drink is discounted. At the B&O (Bar 41) the Happy Hour is geared toward the pleasing the cusomer: which drink do you want? It's $2 off. \r \r And that is the way it should be--more happy hours for all of us. Pros: Lovely Decor, Brilliant drinks with best Happy Hour Cons: desserts have calories more

Food is good waitstaff is not 1/24/2009

We live really close to here and used to go here all the time for meals, coffee, and desserts. The last two times we went the service went from bad to terrible. The previous time we went it was freezing outside and we were seated in the bar for dinner pushed up against the outside door. During dinner our waiter pushed around me and opened the door, letting in bitter chilly air, right on me as he went outside to smoke. We tried again the other day for breakfast, I took family there from out of town and was so embarrassed, the waiter right off the bat acted like he was terribly inconvenienced to be waiting on us. I have worked in customer service for 12 years and would never act like that, I would be fired. He did not come over once to ask if we needed anything. I had to track down another waiter to get something. While leaving. we even left a good tip, I said ""thank you"" to our waiter and his response was ""um hum."" I used to love this place with its delicious food and French decor but even the waiters in France are not anywhere near this snotty. I'll never go back. Pros: great food Cons: unbelievably rude waitstaff more

great desserts! 6/14/2008

I went there with a friend last night for dessert and coffee. I got a nonfat latte and the espresso mousse torte and my friend got the apple crisp ala mode. We both enjoyed what we got, but they definitely weren't the best desserts we'd ever had. Prices, service, and ambiance are all just ok. I wouldn't make a trip just to go there, but if you're in the area I'd recommend stopping by. more

Overpriced, under-flavored, small servings 5/3/2008

The last time I went to B&O was the LAST time. I used to live across the street from them, and would always walk right by on my way to Glo's for breakfast. The food is overpriced, and not that flavorful. Not worth it, in my opinion, and hasn't been in a long time. For breakfast/brunch, try Broadway Bar and Grill (shorter wait). For drinks, try Cafe Metropolitan. For dinner, throw a rock. Cons: Food, Price more

High Tea is Over 11/25/2007

Sadly they no longer do high tea at this shop. I still always enjoy their coffee and the atmosphere is always pleasant. more

Beautiful, great environment 10/19/2007

I have been to B&O only about four times, but each time has been exquisite! They have the best eggplant sandwich in town, by far, and fantastic desserts. Also, they are fast! It is a wonderful place to just sit around and talk to friends while enjoying a thoroughly tasty meal. (Prices are reasonable, too.) Pros: Great food, service, prices, atmosphere :) Cons: Parking is hard to find sometimes more

Bland, Slow and Overpriced 9/3/2007

We went in for an early breakfast on the weekend and it was only moderately busy - plenty of open tables. It still took a few minutes to be noticed and seated. Then about 5 more to be asked what we wanted, another 15-20 to get our drip coffee (which was burnt and overly bitter) and again 20 minutes to get our food. I had gotten the ""petite breakfast"" consisting of a pancake, an egg, and bacon. I expected a small meal, but the ""pancake"" was a joke. It was not an average pancake of any reasonable 4-6 inch diameter, rather it was one of the tiniest silver-dollar pancakes I have ever seen. I ate it in two little bites and then used some of my fiance's toast to stop my hunger and sop up my egg. My fiance's meal was a decent size, but tasted horrible. He ordered the corned beef hash (which he loves for breakfast) and got the blandest, mushiest mess of potatos and what we think was cornmeal. It tasted like soggy bread crumbs while being dry and gritty. He had to hunt for a few tiny bits of beef - which had none of the pickled flavor of a good corned beef. I think their chef must be an idiot who thinks ""corned beef"" means beef with cornmeal. I'm just happy we didn't wait to try this place with our guests from out of town next week! Talk about an embarrassment to the cuisine of Seattle. $24. and an hour and a half = depression about the state of breakfast in this town. Pros: You get to sit down for a few hours. Cons: Food, Service, Prices more
