Tart Flame was awsome 5/5/2007

I like the character of this place. Very warm and inviting unlike many restaurants with great food. Had the tart flambe and it was awsome to say the least- simple, flavorful, awsome. I will be going back.\r Pros: great food Cons: no reservations taken when I went. more

Charming Bistro - Amazing Food! 5/5/2007

August is adorable! I'd only been to August for brunch - which i'm addicted to - and I decided to try it for dinner this past Thursday with an out of town friend. We had such a lovely time, and I'm so glad I finally did it. The food was scrumptious, - we started with an outrageous bacon and onion flatbread tart that was out of this world. We shared the rabbit (they have another name for it on the menu, I can't remember what it was called ) and the trout - which was like a sandwich with vegetables and melon inbetween 2 pieces of trout - wow!! we are chocoholics we we couldn't pass up their chocolate creme dessert- we had such a great time and our waiter made excellent food and wine recommendations - i had to be rolled out, but i have a new addiction! Pros: food, service, wood-burning oven more

Extraordinary!! 5/5/2007

I don't normally post reviews, but felt so compelled after my evening at August tonight for restaurant week - usually i expect restaurant week menus to be supbar to the regular menu - but I was so blown away by my options tonight at August and both me and my guest devoured our food - to start i had lamb meatballs, a greek dish with a yummy salad of bulgur and parsley and my friend had corn and mushrooms that were cooked in this paper pouch - it was fresh and delicious as summer produce should be! I had the bluefish as an entree (to die for) and she had oxtail stuffed i n zucchini and she practically licked her plate - the desserts were scrumptious. The servious was warm and gracious, I felt more like I was at a good friends house rather than a restaurant and my server made excellent wine recommendations. I've rarely had that kind of service in nyc. I will definitely be back and will bring all my friends (especially those I want to impress w/ my find!_ Pros: food, warm & knowledgeable service, beautiful space Cons: can't eat there every day! more

WORST service I have ever received 5/4/2007

I came to this restaurant on a busy Fri. night, and I would have understood if our waiter had not able to give us 100%, but he was unbelievably rude.\r He first came to the table, poured water and barked at us ""so, you want anything else to drink."" We were shocked, but ordered a bottle of wine as we had planned. It only got worse. Another waiter poured our wine, without even doing a proper tasting. He then came back to the table and barked rudely at us ""you want to order?"" I snidely replied, ""would you like us to order?"" trying to let him know he was being obnoxious. He replied ""What I should have said is do you want to eat?""\r We should have walked out right that minute, because it only got worse and worse. \r I told him that I was cold and could he please have some of the windows closed in the back. He replied ""well it's either going to be smokey in here or the windows have to be open."" I told him that his Mgr should do something because I and every woman in the tables next to us were shivering. One woman even was holding the candle on her table for warmth! They closed a few of the windows, but it was a cold night and all of us in the back were still freezing.\r He returned, and I told him I was still cold. He replied ""Well, do you want to move?"" I said, yes, and he replied ""Well the door is open in the front so you're going to be cold there as well."" The manager came by shortly after, apologized and closed the rest of the windows, but I had finished my meal. I let the manager know we were unhappy we were with our waiter and he looked as if he didn't know what to do.\r Our waiter came back to take our dessert order. We ordered 2 ports and a dessert and he then said ""Well, do you want to get anything else because he (the manager) is going to give it you for free.""\r IT was the WORST service I have received in my entire life. I would not reccomend August to anyone as the management obviously does not have any control over their staff or hiring. Pros: food Cons: service, atmosphere more

amazing food! 4/29/2007

My friends had told me that I needed to eat here so my husband and I finally went on Friday night. It is a cozy place and the back garden smells of jasmine! To me the menu needed some explaining so I had many questions but our server was very knowledgeable. We started with the tart flambe which was one of the best appetizers I have ever had, and the steamed mussels with a ramp puree which was great! For dinner I had the trout and my husband had the veal, both were fantastic. It is a great place and the staff was very welcoming. I think we will become regulars here. more

Disappointing Brunch 4/24/2007

We took my sister in law who was visiting from Australia, thinking it was the ultimate brunch place in the city, but we were quite disappointed. The back room is really lovely, particularly on a sunny day like Sunday when we were there, but the service was the main let down. The waitress looked really tired and she kept forgetting things... I think she forgot to put our order through to the kitchen, as we waited for a while and about 35 minutes after she took our order, she suddenly looked at our table and run to the kitchen, which is when I think she realized she forgot to put it through... When the food came eventually, it was average. The egg dishes that my husband and his sister had were decent, but my burger was really quite bad. The fries were really greasy and overcooked, and the meat was disappointing. \r Icing on the cake, I don't know if it is always like that, but the place was really really smoky, and we all smelled so smoky that rather than having a nice stroll in the village after our brunch as initially planned, we all went back home to have a shower and get changed!! I will not go back. Pros: Location, decor Cons: service, food, wait more

Good food, too small, bad service 3/18/2007

Although the brunch food was pretty decent.....the menu was a little limited and the wait staff was very rude and had the attention span of a mouse...overall I would look to go elsewhere for brunch if had the choice, being a seasoned New Yorker. more

What a great dining experience 2/26/2007

The food and ambiance is excellent. It's that perfect blend of feeling cozy and local, but having amazing food and great service. more

Excellent seasonal menu 2/13/2007

I came here with my boyfriend Saturday night and it was so romantic. I didn't know about the back room, so it's actually twice as big than I imagined or read about. Definitely try to get a seat in the back if only because it's concrete walls, with a green house ceiling. The food was excellent. I had the Irish stew and ate every bite. the service was fine. the place was very romantic. I usually order desserts whenever I visit a restaurant for a first time, but none looked that appealing on the menu. The best part was the person I was with. Pros: Location, decor, food, ambiance Cons: I couldn't tell you... perhaps a little crowded? more

Warm and Cozy 11/29/2006

I went here with a friend the day after Thanksgiving for the first time and had a marvelous meal and a very nice time. The appetizer tart is exceptional and not to be missed, although almost more like a small pizza than a tart. For the entree, I had braised ribs and they were very tasty indeed. My friend had the Irish stew and enjoyed that as well. The environment is warm and friendly as was the service. Although we didn't eat in the enclosed garden, it looks lovely back there. I will definitely go back. Great place for a date or the parents when visiting. Pros: Ambience, Food more

great food, excellent service 11/11/2006

This is one of my village favorites. The food is exceptional. The wine list is great, and the service is fantastic. I only wish they took reservations!!!! Go early. The back patio is my favorite place. Inside can seem overly heated in the winter, and not cool enough in the summer. Other than those two things this is one of New Yorks finest places to eat. Casual. Pros: YUM Cons: Cramped inside, no reservations, inside temperature seems hot. more

romantic and fabulous 10/30/2006

My husband and I have been there a handful of times, and have always been satisfied and happy. Tonight we went took two friends there and ...the same. Ummmm....I know they change the menu often, but tonight the trout was incredible. It was a whole fish and barely stuffed with some sort of light cheese and finished with a brown butter and pomegranate sauce. I can't describe it but it was wonderful. To start we had a ""pizza"" with mushrooms and spaghetti squash. Again, can't describe but amazing. I LOVE August. Cons: Might have to wait for a little. have a glass of wine. more

Wonderful! 7/17/2006

I came here with my husband's family, and had a terrific experience. The menu was small, but the food delicious. The night we went, they were out of a couple of the items on the menu, which is acceptable considering how fresh the ingredients are. I shared some wonderful appetizers and had a great matzo ball soup. The garden with glass skylight is lovely. Reservations can only be made for parties of six or more, so plan on waiting a bit if you have fewer people... Pros: Food, Garden more

Worst service ever 4/18/2006

Like other reviewers, I had been wanting to try this place for quite some time. I went in on a Thurs. night as a party of 6, which meant a tip of 20% would be included in the bill. I eat out OFTEN and the servie here was the worst I have experienced in years. When we were able to find our waiter, he was surly and obnoxious. He clearly did not inform the busboys who ordered what because no one could figure out where the appetizers or entrees were supposed to go. I was accompanied by foodies, yet the waiter treated the few questions people had about the menu as if he was dealing with diners who had never eaten at a decent restaurant. I would never go back. Food was below average. more

Forget August... try September 4/9/2006

You look inside and it looks so great. An hour later, you're being forced out by the rude staff after a bland meal. The dishes sound fancy, but taste dull. For example, the cooked grapes were among several boring flavors sampled. The service was less polite than the low NYC standard. Save your money and your patience and go elsewhere. Pros: Ambience, Location Cons: Food, Service, Price more

woodburning brick oven w/ solarium dining room 2/8/2006

this place is great! romantic, but not stuffy or cheesy. the food is not ridiculously expensive although the wine can quickly add up. the front dining room has a ceiling covered in cork. you then pass through the small kitchen & brickoven and arrive at the solarium/greenhouse dining area in the back. On a sunny winter day, brunch in the backroom is an amazing experience. I wanted to order everything on the menu and never wanted to leave. The food is the chef's interpretation of old world european food, i think... There is nothing like a real wood-burning brickoven to cook your food. They do not take reservation, but a 10 - 30 minute wait is totally worth it. Pros: Food, woodburning brickoven, solarium Cons: short wait more

Can't beat the ambience, food 8.5/10 12/5/2005

The ambience in this restaurant is tops in the city, for a cool, quaint off the beaten path SoHo restaurant. We sat in the back, which was a bit cold, this past weekend (12/3). The service was exceptional, wine list very Euro & very good. The food was aggressive in it's attempt at melding flavors, which I enjoy. I had grilled quail, sausage & grapes...sounds totally odd, but was very very good. My wife enjoyed the chicken. Portions were a bit small. Price was surprisingly a bit low, which is good. But this place is all about the atmosphere.....which is great for a date. Pros: Ambience, Adventuresome chefs, Price Cons: Portion Size more

great food and ambience 11/17/2005

I love August!! this restaurant has a great menu with the ambience to match...the onion tarte is delish, as well as the grilled fish, beef, wahoo!! pretty much everything on the menu is worth trying... Pros: romantic more

Nice place, bad food 11/13/2005

It's one of those west villagey places you pass on a Saturday afternoon and say ""we've got to try that - it looks so inviting,"" and then you finally get around to it and encounter disappointment. The atmosphere is wonderful - warm, nice smells, good music - overall great ratings in this department. However, everything we ate was salted to an extreme, and the steak, so regrettably, was saturated with butter. Also, the french fries were $11 and nothing special. The warm burrata appetizer was also soaked in too much oil. The bean soup and the wine were the best parts of the meal. more

Cozy and comfortable 11/12/2005

Went for lunch on Saturday. Lunch selection was simple, yet interesting. Portuguese Chorizo Soup, although i didn't have it, looked quite good. I had the Burger with Pomme Frites with home made mayo, was quite satisfied. Have top shelf european beer selection. Wine list was also very good. Tight setting, reserve ahead or recommend lunch during prompt hours. Pros: tasty food, romantic Cons: small more
