Super romantic lighting 2/19/2012

The food was good. The decor and lighting were awesome. Good wine selection. The wait staff was friendly (albeit very busy). The tables were a bit close, so much so that I felt several times as if I was in the middle of someone else's conversation and interrupting with my own. Maybe the trick is to go early on a weeknight. The bus boy put worcestershire in our olive oil instead of balsamic YUK. They ran out of several dishes by 7:00 pm, which to me seems like poor planning in the kitchen. I am all for conceding that mistakes happen, or it's ""one of those nights"" . However, In this price range you don't get to have ""those nights"". I have to say I was a little disappointed, next time I will opt for something else where what is listed on the menu is available and I can hear my dinner date. There are a million restaurants in NYC, on to the next one. more

GREAT FOOD, Warm attentive service, atmosphere 4/22/2010

After reading some of the reviews we were a bit hesitant about eating here. It's a lovely, inviting place. In the heart of the village, cozy (we like cozy, though some refer to this as cramped)...so what's not to like? Nothing as far as we're concerned. Nice people and Great food. Good recommendations from our waiter. We shared a charcuterie appetizer plate which is something I usually don't order but this was terrific. A wonderful selection. All our entrees were excellent. My only con was I think they should turn off the music which leaned toward rock which is entirely inappropriate in a place which most people (even the naysayers) say is romantic. I say cut the music entirely and let people talk and hear one another. I for one am tired of screaming in too many New York restaurants. Good place, Great people. Pros: Covered patio, Fire, Great service, food Cons: No bar to sit and wait at more

Just something to think about 9/26/2009

I am finally back in bed after spending the morning in the bathroom. The fish I had was very fishy last night and when I complained the manager she said this was how it was supposed to be. Just something to think about when you're booking a reservation. Pros: Outdoor area Cons: The hostess and the food more

Great atmosphere! 11/28/2008

August has ambiance nailed down. Romantic and cozy without being over the top. Immediate comfort as you walk in the door. Service is friendly without pretense, and the food is fabulous. Definitely one of the best in the west village! more

you must try at least once 11/10/2008

I am giving this restaurant 5 stars for its 5 star service and 5 star food. I went for the first time yesterday for dinner and had such an amazing experience I must find a reason to go back soon. I had the pimenton mussels to start and the beef for my entree. Both were delicious. Mmm. This is a restuarant in the city that you must try at least once. more

Best Brunch in the West Village!! 9/21/2008

My husband and I walked into this little place, and the hostess immediately asked us if we'd like a table in the back. The back? We had no idea. We walked back to this area that looked like a little secret garden. How perfect. The food was perfect, and really reasonable. \r This place was the perfect brunch for our last day in NYC! Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Service more

Good Restaurant Week Experience 7/30/2008

Went to dinner here last week for Restaurant week and my friends and I were quite impressed by the quality of the food and the setting. The dishes were on the small side, very typical of most restaurant week menus, though well thought out and well executed. We supplemented our restaurant week dishes with a couple of apps, namely a delicious chicken liver dish and a summer bean salad that was very refreshing and one of those dishes that really made you feel the seasonality of its components. The wine list was well composed with a nice range of prices and options. It's refreshing to see a list that focuses on European wines. While the service was competent and most satisfactory, it was definitely the weak point of a strong showing; not precisely what I would term warm and hospitable. All in all I would certainly return to this place to further explore the menu. more

Has gone downhill 3/29/2008

I don't know what's going on with this place, but the last time I went, it was awful. Bad food, nasty service and too pricey for what they're serving. I'm a food professional myself and would not recommend this place to anyone -- the atmosphere is nice but that doesn't make up for all the other negatives, namely the food. The diners are the next table were complaining about the food as well the night we were there, and several friends have said they noticed this place has gone downhill as well. Pros: Ambience Cons: Food, service, prices more

Nice atmosphere for a late morning after brunch. 2/25/2008

I walked in not knowing anything about the place. It was getting windy and I could tell that my girlfriend was getting tired of just walking around the village. I have to say I was upset when we first entered and we stood for a few minutes just waiting for our presence to be acknowledged. I almost left when the Hostess took us in the back to be seated. It was then where I was impressed. The back room is filled with small tables and inclosed in all glass. Very nice. I ordered a burger which had some of the best seasoned fries ever. In the end I'll go back. I let the hostess slide this time. Pros: Great fries and ambiance. Cons: The hostess could be much better. more

A New Fav! 2/5/2008

I walked in on a colder rainy night, and only had to wait about 15 minutes before getting a table. The food and wine were outstanding! Very cozy atmosphere, although the place is a little on the smaller side. Only bad thing to say is the flight of stairs down to the bathroom tested my repelling/moutaineering skills... ONLY TRY IT SOBER!!!\r \r I recommend the Tarte for an appetiser and the Pepper Steak for the main dish... was too full to try anything else.\r \r Great Date Place!!!\r \r more

Reputation is severly proceeding.... 12/19/2007

I was trying to arrange a nice pre-christmas datenight. I'm a foodie and have plenty of industry buds who noted, despite being around for a minute, the place is cute and the food is good. I read the reviews and thought I would book a reservation anyway. 2 days before the actual reservation, they called to confirm for the wrong evening. When I told them the correct night, they said it was going to be a problem. (Um, glad you called?) I settled for another evening, only to receive another call with the wrong reservation information AGAIN! I dropped it. If you cant get a res right (twice), the reviews are starting to read like theyre not far off. If you try it, maybe you're better avoiding the reservation process... Pros: decor, location Cons: obviously blind reservationist - hope she finds you a table. more

brunch was ok 12/2/2007

I had brunch there today for the first time. The prices were fine and not outrageous and the service was acceptable but nothing above that. Definitely the ambiance was rustic, quant, and had a sort of country, cozy, personality...very homey like...which i liked. I ordered the ham, egg, and cheese crepe and it was excellent, my wife had the german pancake which was only ok. I'd definitely go back, because I also love that part of town. more

Apparently customers have no choice here 11/9/2007

The wine, appetizers and atmosphere were great. The service was digusting and the entrees were totally under-cooked. We asked why they were cooked so rare (pork chop and steak) and instead of taking them back - or even offering to, the waiter said ""because the chef thinks this is the appropriate temperature"" and walked away. When he brought the check ($230.00) I again said that we were REALLY disappointed given that we barely touched our entrees and he said ""it's too bad you have your check because we would've offered you a free dessert."" We had really high expectations for this restaurant, but realize, if we wanted good food and service, we probably should've just gone to Cookshop, our faithful standby. Pros: Great atmospher, apps and wine Cons: Lousy, unprofessional service more

BAD FOOD, BAD SERVICE, EXPENSIVE BILL - They dont care 8/7/2007

we were excited to try August and it sucked! the octopus flatbread ($16) had 4 small pieces of octopus. The lamb chops was the greasiest thing i have ever eaten. The whole fish was dry and was about 4 bites in total. It took one hour and 15 minutes to receive our entree...\r \r The service is worse than the food - the waiter never checked on us. Didnt comp us anything after we complained and the bill was $150. I am now going to get a slice of pizza to fill up.\r \r I can not see how anyone thinks this place is good!!!!! Pros: leaving Cons: everything more

Rude staff and mixed review of the food 5/28/2007

Ambience is nice in the garden. Staff was impatient and sour, unable to accomodate even the smallest requests off the menu (including ""melted butter"" or ""sliced lemon""which were needed to make the food palatable) !! The food was fair to ok...my artichoke was dry and tasteless but the trout was good, on the whole very inconsistent. There is little attention to detail, for instance the bathrooms were unkempt and a peek of the kitchen downstairs was scary! Pros: garden, some tastey dishes Cons: some yuck dishes, rude staff more

SOOO Salty!!! 5/20/2007

Word of caution - anyone with high blod pressure or heart issues, stay away from August. We could not drink enough water, and still left feeling parched. The ambiance is cute, and service good, but the chef certainly does have a heavy hand with the salt. $190 later, we were totally let down. Pros: Cute ambiance; raw oyster Cons: almost everything else more
