Editorial review from Citysearch 3/23/2014

This restaurant was excellent when it first opened up. However, for the last two years my entree meal it's either a hit or miss. I do love their oysters, crab cake, and carpaccio appetizers. However, when it comes to steak (which is what I order every time) I am not always happy. To me if you are going to specialize in having a steak house then you need to be consistent with the temp. of the meat. If I say Medium then it should be medium and not well done which is what I received on my last meal. I did eat my steak and did not attempt to complain to management as I am not one of these individuals who wants a comped meal. My only reason for bringing this up is to make management aware of the importance for providing food satisfaction to all customers who pay premium price for their steaks. Personally, I would refer someone to Kevin Rathburn for a great steak. more

Had a wonderful dinner here. Food was great, and they have the most incredible bread and yummy spread. Good food, good wine, warm ambiance. more

always great!! 8/4/2010

West cobb location is a great neighborhood gathering place. Fun bartenders and we love the daily specials more

Not Impressed 9/24/2009

We went last night for our Anniversary. Not impressed at all. The food was good, but not worth $$ when you can get the same quailty meal at Texas Roadhouse or Longhorns for alot less money. Why would you charge $22 for a steak & side, and then an additional $5 for a salad? \r I ordered a Ribeye and my husband ordered a NY Strip steak. Neither steak remotely looked like the cut we ordered, both looked like a chunk of meat and that's it. \r The food was good, but I'd much rather go to Roadhouse for the $$. \r I will not go back and will not recommend it to my friends and family. Pros: Good Atmosphere Cons: Very overpriced for what you get more

Excellent Find 11/4/2008

My wife and I recently decided to try Aspens. We arrived on a friday, and found the place to be quite busy. Although we didnt have a reservation, the hostess told us that she could get us seated in about 15 minutes. We went to the bar (which was also packed), and were promptly greeted by the bartender. We ordered our drinks, and after about 10 minutes we were seated. The food and service were outstanding. We tried the crabcake on the suggestion of our waiter, and found it to be one of the best we've ever had. The steaks were cooked perfectly, and tasted great. We will definately be making many return visits. Pros: Outstanding service and food more

overpriced 8/24/2008

this past week i was in the mood for a really good steak and had not had one for a long time. i normally go to a place i already know but didn't want to travel too far from home and had heard aspen's was pretty good so i decided to give it a shot. the atmosphere was nice other than the bartop being ice cold. the glass of wine i ordered was delicious. but when i opened my napkin, the silverware was filthy. for someplace that charges $20+ for entrees, this is unacceptable. the silverware should be polished, let alone clean. however i was still looking forward to my entree as the menu was very interesting - there were several things i wanted to try but had my heart set on a steak. i ordered the ribeye medium. the gentleman who delivered my steak said it looked delicious and then asked me to cut into it to see that it was prepared properly, stood there for a second and then walked off before i had an opportunity to respond. not that it would have mattered, as it was so dark there was no way i could have noticed before i tasted it that it was in fact undercooked. i was also a bit astounded that he commented on how delicious it looked as it did not look appetizing to me in the least. i had trouble finding more than about five small bites that were not fat. i would have asked the bartender to send it back but she didn't check back until i was almost done with my wine - she never asked me how the food was. i ordered the mac n chz because it sounded interesting, but its flavor did not live up to its description. the bacon did not enhance the flavor of the cheese, i had to wonder if this was an experiment from a younger chef that no one bothered to taste before putting it on the menu and serving it. i boxed the food to take it home to my dogs as i did not want to waste all my money and when i got home to real lighting i realized it was even more undercooked and fatty than i thought. i was very disappointed to find that we do indeed have to leave marietta to find good steak. more

Good presentation, not so good steaks. 7/28/2008

I decided to try aspen recently as the reviews on citysearch were more on the positive side and I was in the mood for a good steak. I ended up really unhappy with the food and will not return and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.\r \r I ordered a Filet Mignon cooked medium and recieved a Filet cooked rare. Now, they do ask you to cut the steak in front of them to see if it is cooked to order. I didn't cut entirely into the center so that is my fault. But I never send food back to the kitchen because I fear what will happen when you do this (I am not saying that it would happen in this restaurant, just a general rule I have). I worked in the food business for a long time and I know better than to send something back to the kitchen.\r \r Besides being undercooked the meat had absolutely no taste, seemed like there was no seasoning on the meat at all. When you are paying the prices they charge for steak I expect to get a steak cooked exactly how I ordered it and for it to have flavor. I really feel that for what they are serving it is overpriced.\r \r One other complaint is that they do not have any draft beer. They have an adequate wine list, but when I have a steak I do not want wine, I want a dark beer to go with my steak. I can have a steak and bottled beer at home, when I go to a restaurant and am going to pay for alcohol I expect it to be draft beer not bottled beer.\r \r This restaurant charges the same prices as Stoney River (I do not work at Stoney River, nor do I have any monetary interests in their restaurants) but does not provide anything close quality wise. Pros: Good service Cons: poor quality food, no draft beer more

A most Excellent dining experience 5/28/2008

My family and I have always had a wonderful dining experience at Aspens and their adjoining Theo?s. The food is delicious and well presented, and if it?s not then tell them. The staff is very personable and is at your service. We have invited 2 couples to dine with us and they also were well pleased. In today?s economy, where even fast food is expensive, why waste your money when Aspens has their Early Bird special during the weekday evenings? We all dined outside before the beautiful stone fireplace while our children were accommodated with free kid?s meals because they earned high grades in elementary school. The Sunday Brunch is lovely. After you dine and sign your check, read it. There may be a discount offered for the next visit. Aspens is elite in quality but not run by elitists like some have alleged. The personnel are always friendly and highly accommodating. I expect a lot when I dine out and Aspens exceeds my expectation every time. Pros: Fireplace seating, quality furnishing, great staff, Just good food, etc Cons: no umbrellas outdoors more

Great steaks and exceptional service - didn't need a reservation and got the Early Bird special to boot 4/5/2008

Our experience with Aspens was great, from the minute we walked in to the moment we walked out the door, everything was exceptional. We didn't have any plans on going here specifically, just saw the place and walked in. Our first impression was that this is going to be an expensive experience - but the prices were quite reasonable, even when compared to a ""regular"" steak restaurant. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the service was top notch. The hostesses, wait staff and management were all quite friendly and professional. Based upon the experience we had, I can understand why a reservation would be necessary. We were lucky enough to have gone early, on a weekday, and we did get the early bird pricing (a great deal) and then found out that kids eat free on Wednesday's too. The kids menu was great (better than many adult menus). We had an appetizer, drinks, steaks and a child?s meal - all at a very reasonable price. Even with a generous tip, we left there spending well under $100. \r \r Although it was not the very best steak I have ever had, it was quite good and worth the price. I would definitely go back. Thanks to the ""annoyed"" peoples' advice, will be making a reservation. P.S. If a place accepts reservations, you would be well advised make one in advance. The fact that one is not required does not guarantee that you will be seated (as others have complained). If a place is difficult to get seated without a reservation, then that says quite a bit about the food, service, and atmosphere. Pros: Exceptional service, reasonable prices and great food. Cons: Not really any more

Will not be going back 3/9/2008

I was very disappointed with my experience. The kitchen was slow with every single course. I don't think that it was the servers fault because his timing with everything else was pretty accurate. His attitude on the other hand left a lot to be desired. He was pushy and condescending. It was obvious that we had not selected the particular wine that he approved of, which was a nice bottle of wine in my opinion. The wine list was decent, but the food was just okay. Overall, the negatives outweighed the positives and I will not go back to this establishment. Pros: Server assistants were there when the server dropped the ball Cons: Plenty!!!! more

Best Steak in East Cobb 2/15/2008

Finding a good restaurant in East Cobb isn't an easy feat. Aspens offers it. From appetizers to salads to steaks, they don?t miss a beat. And save room for dessert. Their s?mores are worth saving some room. We were even impressed with their veal parmesan. More of a steak house version that an Italian bistro, but still lip smacking.\r \r Much to our surprise, their kid?s menu is very good. My six year old loves it. Not bad for a kid deprived of chicken fingers.\r \r Yes, you better make reservations. Hey, it?s the best steak joint this side of 285. Would you expect anything less? If you don?t have a reservation, you aren?t going to get a seat. And when you are making your reservation, try for one during their early bird. Deals are incredible.\r Pros: Incredible steaks and desserts Cons: Need a reservation or else. more

Don't bother 2/11/2008

We have visited this restaurant twice and both times, highly disappointed. The salad was good except our friends had requested dressing on the side and that had to be re-done. I ordered the salmon and it was barely warm. The service was slow although apologetic. For the money, this is a very expensive waste of time and space. more

Rude Snobbish staff 12/29/2007

After reviewing this web site I read that reservations were not necessary. So we went in on a Thursday. The staff asked us if we had a reservation and we said NO, all 6 people behind the counter stopped talking and looked at us as if we were paying cash in a VISA commercial.\r \r One girl finally broke the silence and told us that the tables near the bar were open seating. So we went over to the bar and picked one of the 5 open tables and sat. We were talking for over 5 min before we realized no-one has come over to great us. We had to flag a staff down to get him to bring us water. After 15 min!!! someone came by and asked us if we had a menu, we said NO, so they left to get us one. 5 min later (YES, we were there 20 min drinking water) a young teenager came over with a 15 year old attitude telling us ?We need this table?. I told her we needed a menu. She said that we should have made a reservation but since we did not we had to leave. I told here that the hostess told us that these tables were open seating, to which she replied,? only the bar stools are?.\r \r She again asked us to leave. As we packed up we had the clients raise their noses at us and the staff huddled behind the reception desk staring at us and whispering. I approached the host desk to tell them how offended I was and they all quickly turned their backs to me not wanting to confront me. Only this young teenager who apparently is hired to be rude and throw out guests without reservations was looking at us.\r \r This was the most rude staff and stuffy clients I have met in all of my travels. I have called the manager and his response was ?next time make a reservation"". HEY Bryon, it is not like you?re in Buckhead, get real. You have taught your patrol to run off non-blue cash, that?s not good for business. Pros: Parking lot smell Cons: Staff's snobby attitude more

Great scallops and tortellini dinner 12/20/2007

Short and sweet - I would recommend it. Althought I didnt have steak. Wine was great! \r I went there for a work dinner party... it was a long tedious drive (from Marietta square) but i thought it was worth it.I ordered the scallops and totellini and it was fantastic! I have actually craved it ever since. \r Our service was a bit young and unprofessional but not a problem overall. Pros: good food - GREAT warm bread and coucous Cons: the drive if you dont live in marietta, more

Beware the Early Bird Special--you may go in expecting it and pay up at bill time 12/16/2007

Food is good, but DON""T BE MISLED by the EARLY BIRD SPECIAL. Though you may have seen the sign out front, in reality the special is available ONLY if the manager thinks the night will be a slow one. I know this from personal experience, and I consider this to be a dishonorable deceptive practice. Pay through the nose at the manager's whim.\r \r more

Great find in Marietta 12/13/2007

My family and I went there for my birthday and it was pretty good! I really didn't expect to find a decent restaurant in Marietta. The service was fast. The food was okay. The steaks are pretty good, but the rest of the entrees were just okay. more

Great Atmosphere and service. Signature Steaks? Hardly. 11/15/2007

*** to ***** STARS . Mr. Epicureans' more accurate rating.\r \r I will briefly touch upon the overall lack of culinary quality in Cobb County, Georgia. For those of us in search of quality food in Cobb, we are unfortunately in a culinary desert (not dessert). East Cobb is undergoing a changing demography and is slowly being gentrified. As such, only a small percentage of East Cobb residents would actually patronize an establishment like Aspens. ""All you can eat"" , ""Country buffets"" still do well here in East Cobb. \r \r Basically there is no competition for what Aspens is doing in Cobb. We are glad to have them! Lack of competition means they can charge what they want -- and maybe rightly so. It does save one a drive into Atlanta proper.\r \r However, despite the great atmosphere and staff I will review them accordingly: \r \r Aspens' is charging ""prime cut"" steak prices. In my opinion, however, their steaks far from prime quality. I prefer a grilled steak on my Weber Genesis grill at home. They are not even close to Bones or even Ruth Chris. The chef also put some sort of nasty glaze on the steak for a finish that ruins the whole purpose of a ""prime cut"" steak IMNSHO -- if that is what they are indeed serving.\r \r Conclusion: Don't order Steaks here. Which is an irony of course considering their name -- ""Aspens' Signature Steaks."" I would opt for the oysters instead(on the weekends only) and a few appetizers, followed by the $10.00 Angus Burger, split that with your significant other, and few glasses of house wine and your check will be commensurate to the meal. BTW - bread is served and free.\r \r Mr. Epicurean Pros: Great atmosphere Cons: Subpar steaks and costly more

Considering the options, it's okay 11/22/2006

In a place where it seems like every restaurant is a franchise, Aspens is not an exception. It is a nice place for a franchise, but I really wish that there were some reputable family-owned restaurants/steakhouses around here that could compete with the likes of Aspens, Ruth's Chris, etc.\r \r As far as Aspens goes, at the West Cobb location the atmosphere, food ,and service is good, but it is WAY too expensive. They have decent specials if you can get there early enough, and these are more resonably priced than the normal dinner menu. You can also use coupons from the Entertainment book, which really helps. Otherwise you can not get out of there without a $125 (average) bill - I guess the owners will like that comment. For the price, there are other franchise Steak houses that I would prefer patronizing, not including Roadhouse, etc., which Aspen's is definitely a cut above. Pros: Great Atmosphere, good food Cons: Way to expensive. more

Take Plenty of Cash! 11/7/2006

2 Steaks + 4 Beers + 1 Salad = $100 Bucks. Service was very good, but don't expect any bread with your meal. Salads are ala carte (1 will feed 2) as are mushrooms or bluecheese for your steaks, Plus steak selection is limited. You do get a side (I recommend the creamed corn though the asparagus was very good also). Seating is a little tighter than I care for. The steak... for the price I was expecting more. The cook was right, but just tasted like any other steak. Pros: good service, right on time with food Cons: just too pricey more
