I called Appleton Campbell to come look at an exterior hose valve that spewed water only when turned on. I chose them because they had the lowest initial visit fee of companies in my area. It turned out that it was a freeze burst in a frost free valve. He replaced the valve and helped identify the reason for the burst. Although I had turned off the inside shutoff for that valve and left the outside valve open, it seems the inside valve had continued to slowly leak water. That water froze and built up a plug creating enough pressure to pop the copper pipe. The technician replaced the inside shutoff and found sediment in the line that had impacted it. We opted to replace all three shutoff valves with ball valves at a reasonable price. I watched the technician the entire time and was very impressed with the quality of workmanship. He would always put boot coverings on before coming into the house, too. You don't see that much out here in the country. more
