Editorial review from Citysearch 7/30/2012

Took our 10 month old puppy to the clinic for an allergic reaction to a bee sting on a sunday evening around 6pm. (our vet uses them as their after hours cover) Everyone was extremely caring from the receptionist to the tech to the doctor. Because this is something that could happen again, the doctor instructed us on what we could do in the future to immediately help our puppy and possibly avoid a trip to them. The fee was reasonable for an emergency visit, and shot at $175. They also contacted our vet to let them know our puppy as seen so they could follow up with us. I would absolutely use them again if there was a need. more

I need an emergency shot for my cat, 5/26/2012

I need an emergency shot for my cat, and these people are charging 3 times what the vet is because they are an emergency hospital. It's all paid up front, so if you don't have the money, they won't help your pet. So,only the wealthy's animals can get sick in an emergency. Shame on them!! more

ABSOLUTE WORST VET EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD 7/14/2011

If one star is ""EH"", then they deserve a negative number. First off, they are the only game in town for an overnight emergency and whoever owns this place, which is, by the way, the same staff rotating back and forth from the Poughkeepsie emerg. clinic, totally takes advantage of that fact. I do not feel it's overly unreasonable to charge a small percentage higher, but $118 to just walk thru the door???? And everything gets worse after that. EVERYTHING. I have had two seperate experiences with them...one where my pet died and one where my pet made it out of there. Way too many details to go into even one story, so I will leave you with this...if you can get ANYWHERE ELSE, except the Poughkeepsie place (same owners), GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Anywhere else would have to be a vast improvement. Be aware they will ""sell"" you all sorts of unnecessary treatments, drugs, etc and Lord help you if you disagree or ask a question. Simply said, it's their way or the highway. Most importantly, you need to remember that you are leaving your pet in their hands...be afraid; be very afraid. I can only hope and pray that I NEVER have to use them again. Simply speechless that ANYONE would give this place anything over 1 star. more

GREAT CARE 6/30/2011

I have visited this clinic twice. I am sorry the other reviewers had bad experiences; its heart-breaking not to be able to pay for a pet's care. However they saved my cat's life, were sympathetic and extremely informative - everything I want in a vet or doctor of any kind! Also, they explained all fees up front before I even came in (I called first, which is a good idea to see if they are tied up or not). This morning they fixed up a bird of mine with the same professionalism. I am very grateful. You can trust them. more

had a great experience 6/3/2011

I was surprised to read the negative reviews. I had nothing but a good experience at this clinic. Both the vet and tech were compassionate with me and my 12 year old pug who i brought in with a pinched nerve in his back, unable to use his back legs. I was given realitic expectations, (but hope for the best.)They were sympathetic when it was explained the monetary constraints i was dealing with, and any treatment was discussed before hand. At this point, we know our pug is on borrowed time (due to a tumor they discovered) but I am definitely enjoying what time I have with him (and that the meds did relieve the nerve and he is walking again)and he is being spoiled rotten. more

Never, ever go there! 4/20/2011

In reading some of the prior reviews of the Kingston Animal Hospital, my sentiments are very similar. The support staff were fine and caring but the vet on duty left much to be desired. more

Do not judge, Do your job, educate, ... 3/29/2011

Many issues and statements were made by the clinic, Kelly Tech, and Doctor on duty...Do you euthanize animals or not...if not do not threaten that you do to make a situation go the way you want...Listen to the owner, DO NOT PASS JUDGEMENT>>NOT YOUR JOB..Many animals are not vaccinated and yes outdoor/stray animals it is a terrible situation...What about people who have pets, indoors, loved, never go out, never around sick and contagious animals, fed, housed, not on the street...what about those owners...Here is a perfect example of why pet owners are afraid/hesitate about the cost of medical expenses...Years ago you could call and take your animal to a local vet and they would see them but now vets just take the easy cases or it is to close to the end of the day, sorry no time...Local animal hospitals that were called for help..Kingston Animal Hospital offered a appointment the following day at 5:00pm - cat would have been dead, Lake Katrine unable to see cat, Hurley Vet Hospital, Ulster Animal Hospital, Woodstock, South Peak, call them all and see if a woman called for help with her cat....unable to help...and said go the the Emergency Clinic that did not open until 6:00pm you have to leave a message and wait for them to call you back..but when you do arrive you are judged why did you wait SO LONG... Sorry no rating deserved!!!!! more

continued to the clinic that doesn't deserve a rating 3/29/2011

A little later she then called us into the exam room. They were able to remove the kitten that was stuck without major surgery but knew that there was still an additional kitten in her that had died. They than informed us that for her cesarean would cost $1,700, we had $1,000 that we came up with but they refused to work with us. They then gave us an option to either pay the full amount or to sign our rights over to our cat, so they could find it a new home. They felt that we were neglectful pet owners and they knew we couldn?t afford the full fee of $1700. We were forced into signing over our rights to being her owner to save our cats? life, they informed us that if we waited until the next day to take it to a local vet, that our cat may not survive, we did not have many choices. The vet informed us if we were unable to pay they normally would euthanize the cat, but since she was there she gave us the option of signing the cat over and that she would find our cat a home. We loved that cat more than anything and would not want her suffering all night, so we signed the form because they would not operate until we made a decision, a payment plan was not an option. Now the kitten that did survive is without his mother, our other male cat is without his best friend, and me and my boyfriend our without our cat that we love. In my opinion, judgment was passed immediately one us and was decided to take our cat from us, not to act professional and save her life. We never thought it would have came to losing our cat, if we did we would have done things very different. In addition to losing our cat they still charged us a fee of $184, we still had to pay for the exam and the removing of the one kitten. Needless to say, we were very unhappy with the service that we were provided. more

This clinic doesn't deserve to be on the rating scale. 3/29/2011

My name is Katelyn, me and my boyfriend were proud owners of two beautiful Persion/Himalayan cats. My one female cat became pregnant prior to the age of 1 years old. Yes, I should have gotten her neutered , that is something I will take full responsibility for, but since I didn?t, I planned on taking full responsibility in finding homes for her kittens. My male cat has since gotten spayed so we wouldn?t run into this problem again. Having two cats is a very big financial responsibility, since I just took my male cat to get his shots and have him spayed, I was waiting until my female cat had her kittens to do the same, since it would not be safe to have that done while she was pregnant. Sunday afternoon my cat went into labor, she had a beautiful kitten, and then stopped having contractions. We thought she still felt chunky and knew that it was unusual to have only one kitten but we were unsure if there was more kittens in her. Someone I knew had a litter of only one kitten before so I knew that it was something that could happen. I also knew of a cat that had 2 kittens one day and then gave birth 2 days later to another kitten. My female cat was very attentive to the kitten that she did have and showed no signs of having more kittens as of Sunday night when we went to sleep. Monday morning when I woke up to go to work, I checked on both the mom and kitten, there was no signs of any issues, I left for work. Thank goodness my boyfriend was home on Monday because she began to go into labor that afternoon around 2:30pm. There was complications with the labor, the kitten was coming out feet first. He did everything to assist with the delivery but she was tiring out. I did not get home from work until 4:50pm that afternoon when I called my mom and asked her to come over, since she used to work for a veterinarian in this area and had experience on this. My boyfriend did not know to take her to the vet sooner, he was hoping nature would take it?s course and she would be fine. We are not veterinarians or certified vet technicians, we never received that degree and not knowledgeable to all complications that could occur during cat pregnancy. The professionals should be understanding of pet owners lack of knowledge in that area and not to pass judgment so quickly and write us off as bad pet owners. Between the hours of 4:50pm and 5:30pm, I started calling all local vets from Kingston to Woodstock, seeing if I could bring my cat in for a cesarean. Every vet I spoke to could not take my cat in because it was so late in the day and my cat was not an established patient, and we were referred to the emergency animal clinic that opened at 6:00pm. One vet in this area offered to make me a appointment for 5pm the next day, my cat would have been dead at this point if I waited that long. So me and my boyfriend were forced to use the emergency animal clinic in Kingston to save our cats? life. We arrived there approximately 6:30pm with our cat, and they took her in right away. Before we even spoke with the veterinarian, one of the worker asked to speak with us, and was very rude to us. She couldn?t believe that no area vets would have taken us and we should never should have let this get to this point. She did not care that we told her we called all vets in this area, she made it seem that we were neglectful pet owners and that we were liars, she then explained that it could cost upwards of $1000, we do not have that kind of money so we filled out for a line of credit and were approved for only $500 with the additional $500 we had in cash. We then went back in the waiting room, until the vet could speak with us when she was done with her exam. ( see second part of review with Kate02) more

Sick Rabbit 2/8/2011

I was at the Animal Emergency Clinic and I was also told a technician was allergic to rabbits. I was able to have my rabbit treated within a short time. Unfortunately after 3 days under their treatment plan and a week with hospitalization at a local veterinary hospital , my rabbit had to be euthanized. I can only hope I got the best knowledgeable care for Trouble . The charge is 118.00 to just see your pet. My vet charges 62,00 for exiotic pets. I was there on 1/1/2011. more

Worst Vet Experience Ever 1/11/2011

My family's pet rabbit was not just any farm rabbit, she was a part of the family. Biscuit (we know it was a silly name) had free range of the house, was potty trained, and hung out with the dogs as if she was one herself. On really nice days we would let biscuit out on our deck in an enclosure we made just for her. This enclosure had everything her cage inside had, including protection from predators. As we got towards the end of a beautiful day and went to bring Biscuit inside, we realized there was something wrong. Biscuit was being eaten alive by maggots. Yes, maggots. (We later found out from our own vet that this could happen within a couple of hours. All from a fly landing on her and laying eggs. All she needed was a wound the size of a pin hole.) We had never noticed any marks on her before, and we were mortified when we picked her up and inspected. The hair on her bottom half was coming off and maggots were all over the skin. We could tell she was dying so my mother, my sister and I rushed her to the emergency vet. Once we got there we knew there was no saving our rabbit. We just wanted her to be put out of her misery. We went in and there was one other patient in the waiting room. We told the receptionist what happened and that we just wanted our rabbit euthanized. We were told that it would be a while AND that a veterinary technician working was allergic to rabbits...SO SHE MADE US WAIT OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. It is not the technicians fault that she is allergic to rabbits but it is an EMERGENCY ANIMAL CLINIC that treats ALL kinds of animals..there wasn't anyone else on duty that day to help us? There was..but they didn't help. By that time it was dark and my mother, little sister, and I were sitting outside the clinic on a sidewalk bench holding our dying rabbit in our arms. How hard is it to come outside with a little vaccine so our pet didn't have to die suffering? From previous euthanasia experiences, I know it does not take more than a minute or two. WE WERE WAITING OUTSIDE FOR 45 MINUTES. We continuously went inside and asked how long it would be, and all answers to do with time never turned out to be true. Eventually it came to the point where our pet died in my mother's arms, on that sidewalk bench in the dark, chilly, summer night. We did not even bother to go in and tell them that their poor actions resulted in our rabbits death..but you bet we called the other clinic that they branched out from to file our complaint. And another story that relates to another review listed here. My aunts dog's eye came out of its socket due to a dog fight and this emergency clinic refused to treat until they got cash first hand. They would not accept anything but cash from her..my aunt had to leave her dog there and go get cash just so they could start treatment on the dog! I am sure they have done wonderful things to help save animal's lives but this veterinary clinic needs to change some of their conditions. I understand they worry about treating and people then taking off without payment but instead of helping families get through emergencies they are adding more stress to them. more

MOST PATHETIC OF ANY PLACE I'VE EVER BEEN 10/3/2010

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 PATHETIC PEOPLE? - ? - Today If I could recall the name of the Vet I dealt with I'd post it here - but it had the resemblance of a lady, who bottom-line said in no lesser words ""if you can't pay - we won't even help to take your [very sick] pet out of pain or the difficulty he was having"" - I begged to give me more info that I could make a caring decision - it was very emotional. The only thing this ""thing"" of as person could say was ""do you think this will be a good investment"" and I replied ""hey - I'm dealing with a life-and-death decision, not an investment"" [and wish I could have added, ""you bitch"". These people are SICK! uncaring - I couldn't believe it - and NO ONE can barely afford them - they prey on desperate people, and 100% prey on their emotional and very difficult circumstances! I saw 3 people in very dire emotional situations - and saw ONE guy had to post his credit card for $1,500 to help save his pet from a cancer condition - AND THAT AMOUNT WAS PAYMENT FOR ONLY HALF THE ""ESTIMATE"" THEY GAVE THE GUY!! I am broke, unemployed and was desperate not to see my long-time pet-pal be in serious pain or in a serious fatal condition - and begged that they keep him or help him through the nite until I could get him to my regular vet [who would do anything to help!!! - CATSKILL ANIMAL HOSPITAL] - AND THEY REFUSED - LEAVING ME TO DECIDE TO BRING HIM HOME AND POSSIBLY DIE IN PAIN, OR TO EUTHANIZE HIM BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE $1,000 DOLLARS TO KEEP HIM THERE THE FEW HOURS OF THE NITE- I WAS LITERALLY FORCED TO EUTHANIZE WITHOUT KNOWING IF IN FACT IT WAS NECESSARY !! want to know more - email me: brite1984@yahoo THESE PEOPLE SUKK - BAD! more

Great Place With Great Vets 9/21/2009

I can't sing the praises of Dr. Black enough. She was my original vet years ago and I found this emergency clinic through a neighbor whose dog needed immediate care several Christmases ago. My dogs have been here on 2 occasions where my regular vet was unavailable and they received excellent care. The fees are very reasonable, considering the off-hours service; it's only a bit more than my regular vet charged. As I mentioned before, a friend and neighbor had used this clinic early Christmas morning in 2006 and I accompanied her. It was so good to see Dr. Black again and I immediately told my neighbor that I was confident her dog would receive the very best of care. Dr Black was there round the clock on that Christmas holiday because an animal might have needed her. Need I say more about her compassion and concern? She puts animals first. Bravo! Pros: Caring Staff, Reasonably Priced more

Katie (our 14 lb Jack Russell) chased after a bear and was attacked. My husband first heard the noises from the bear, like a ""snorting"" and immediately after Katie's yelping and screaming. He hurried over to rescue her to find the 250 lb. bear was still standing there about 30 feet away looking at them. Pros: Thumbs Up more
