I got a Kenworth W900L from American Truck Group 2 years ago and they have always helped me. When I wanted to get my own authority I sat down with my rep and they helped me fill out all the forms and get them notarized. When it came time to do my taxes this year, I joined a class they had on tax preparation. So, if you are a customer, next time you are there getting work or maintenance done, ask them what they are offering. It beats sitting around and watching tv. And, it will probably help you make or save money! more

I was getting my truck serviced at American Truck Group last week and I saw part of this software while I was in the lobby. It was modeled on an excel spreadsheet and it broke down the amount you grossed to the amount you should net. Knowing how much to pay yourself is one of the hardest steps to discipline yourself with. You have to save. If you look at it like you are paying on accounts that you owe instead of saving it helps. We all think that we are worth more, right? Of course we do, you do. However, if you do not put that money aside, you will not have a business to run. Glad to see the software they will be offering is based on this! Thanks, Greene Expedited, Inc. more

Yes, a business plan is always good. You are right, if someone has not had any business training, surviving as an owner-operator may have just as much to do with luck as anything else unless someone helps them. I have had a truck with ATG for a little over two years now and so far so good. As far as them providing some educational tools free, right on. I try to manage my income so that I will always have a business to run. Almost everything I earn goes back into my business. I live simply and only pay in cash. What has really hurt me this year has been not getting paid for several loads from two different companies. It seems like there are more companies that will not think twice about writing you a hot check or not honoring a contract. If I did not have money set aside then this is something that could have cost me my truck and my business. I would guess that any educational material would be based heavily on how and where to save your money! more

Three years ago when I was at American Truck Group, the person who I signed my contract with sat me down and asked me about my business plan. 4 hours later at 1:38 AM (yes, I am serious) I realized that there were a lot of things that I had not thought of and I certainly never put it down on paper. I can tell you one thing, if I had not gone over the numbers like I did with that guy three years ago i would not have the truck today. Just because you are an owner operator does not mean you are independent from anything except all of the work that someone else once did for you if you drove for a company. Being an owner operator means you have to do the driving and all of the other work. You do get paid for it, but if you don't know how to do it in the first place, you may soon miss being a company driver. So, when someone who knows what they are talking about, gives you helpful information, sit down and listen for once. You will thank me later. Thank you ATG. M.H. more

There are plenty of tax advantages for truckers. Glad to see American Truck Group will include them in their educational software. I meet other truckers all of the time talking about the tax advantages. Some don't seem to care (that worries me) but most seem like they had no idea that the tax code includes relief for owner-operators. You don't have to be a genius to figure them out but you do have to know about them. The IRS will not give you the deductions because you tell them you are an owner operator. American Truck Group has a lot of good information about taxes and the trucker. They have a tax attorney in house who I have met while I was there getting a truck. A simple conversation at the Coca-Cola machine saved me over $8K last year! James Quincey more

My wife is an accountant. I am the trucker. She helps manage the money, as she says, so that we have a business tomorrow. And, you know what, she is probably right. The reason I got my truck through American Truck Group is not because I have bad credit, but because I write off the 100% of my monthly truck note on my taxes. Since it is classified as a rent-to-buy I get to write off my entire truck payment. All of it! I make a considerable amount more each year because of this. She noticed this tax advantage in one of their ads and when we got there to pick out a truck we were surprised. They actually have a really good selection of trucks. There program is working well enough for us that we will be putting our oldest Son in one of their trucks next month. Browning Consolidated, LLP more

I don't see how most new owner-operators survive now the way the industry is set up. I am 64 and when I got my first truck you did not have all of the regulations and fines and fees and you name it, we now have it. It used to be you, the truck (no ecm's) the open road and a paycheck. You can still make a good living, but you need a map, not for the roads you will be driving on, but a map for the business. I have 3 Volvo's with American Truck Group. I have heard them talking about this program and I know, even at my age with over 40 years in the industry, that I would benefit from being better able to run my business. T. Newman more

I have a truck with American Truck Group so I called about this free educational software. My rep said that they will have it out around the first of the year and anyone who has a truck through them can get it at no cost. He said some of it will be comprised of CD-ROM's that you put in your computer and a spreadsheet pops up that allows you to enter information so that you get the most money for your loads. You will not have to have anything extra on your computer for it to work. Oh, also a bunch of legal forms and tutorials, special tax breaks, etc... It sounds really good and again, it will be free if you have done business with them. Can't knock that. Also, in the works is an app for the iPhone and Android that helps you calculate anything and everything to do with trucking (it will be free also). Thanks, Sanderson Heavy Haulers, LLC more

Business for Truckers 101! Indeed, kudos to American Truck Group for offering educational material to their customers. This country is made up of small businesses and no one wants to see them fail. Small businesses are made up of dreams of the people who open them and sacrifice their time, money, and energy (just to name a few) in hopes they will grow. Kind of like planting a seed. But many people do not know how to get that seed to grow, nevermind grow well so that is provides fruit and does not die prematurely. The trucking business is hard and it will eat you alive if you go unprepared. Having some good business sense is a must if you are to sustain you business. If you don't have it, I encourage you to get it. I failed four times at running my own trucking business. I finally educated myself on running a business and at 54 years of age, I sure wish that I did it sooner. more

You know that providing their customers with the education to run a trucking business is a tremendous asset for the trucker and the dealership. I mean, it's a win-win situation, because the customer will make more money and probably do more business with the dealership, but immediately they will be able to to live better in-the-now. The dealership will gain a customer that is grateful, but just as importantly, they will gain a higher percentage of customers that will be able to make their truck notes! I bet you see a lot of other dealers, besides American Truck Group, start to offer some type of educational outline for their customers. Kudos to American Truck Group for being the first! more

American Truck Group helped me to get out from beneath a truck note that I was buried in upside down. They took it in trade, paid it off, and put me in a truck that I could better afford. I mean, the whole purpose of a truck is to make money. i don't care how much chrome I have or if I can light up the sky with all my lights I have added. I just want to make money and better provide for my family. I now have a note that is about half of what I used to have financed and the truck I am in is the same make, model, and yes, year. So, I thank American Truck Group for providing a program for people like me. more

Re: Email request from ATG for review. I probably got the most dependable truck that I have ever owned four years ago from American Truck Group. I am 59 and i have owned quite a few trucks in my day. In fact each of the trucks I test drove, four in total, were solid and ready to generate capital. That is what impressed me more than any other one thing; the mechanical soundness of the trucks. They do everything they can to make sure each truck is solid. Let's face it, a broken down truck in need of a tow does not make anyone any money. ATG understands this and will keep a truck in the shop until the customer is 100% confident in the truck's condition. I should note that the company has a great deal of talent in their shop. They have also invested over $750K in diagnostic equipment and computer systems that typically are only found at the manufacturer. more

When I was in Gulfport picking up my first truck I was young and inexperienced. That was 10 years ago. I now have 6 trucks in total from American Truck Group. The program that I signed up for really has not changed a whole lot in 10 years. I know most of the people employed there because I have been a customer for so long. I live in New Orleans, Louisiana which is only an hour away so I also get all of my work done at ATG also. For those of you who want to know what kind of people make up this company I will tell you from a decade of first hand experience that they are some of the most dedicated, honest, nicest, and hard-working bunch of people to ever sell trucks. If I had to describe them in one word it would be genuine. I should add that they are very good at what they do also. ATG can take any person with a CDL and in a couple days have them driving down the road in their own truck complete with all the tags, permits, taxes. you name it and they have done it. So, if you want a chance to drive your own truck this company can and will make it happen. more

I would do business with them again anytime. Actually, I will be doing business with them again in 3 weeks. After spending one year in their program with one truck I (as well as other program customers) become eligible to trade my current truck for another one. I will be getting a truck with approximately 350K miles on it and three years newer. My payments stay the same. I only will have to come out of pocket about a grand. Logically, I cannot foresee ever wanting to keep the same truck which loses it's value while the cost of repairs increase. For a small fee once a year I can trade up into a much nicer truck with fewer repairs and miles and at the same time earn me more money. more

I too received an email requesting a review of my experience with American Truck Group. Look, you will not come across any major problems with ATG. This company is like a well-oiled piece of machinery. If they are guilty of anything, it is that they want to do business with everyone and I mean 24/7. I give them high marks for attempting to do anything and everything they can for the customer. If I had to find something, anything negative to say about this company it would be that they are possibly stretched a little thin personnel wise. Having said this, on a scale of 1 to 10, I would still give them a 9.5 for their program. more

I got an email from American Truck Group asking me to give them a review on any site I chose and I City Search is my home page so here it goes. This company is unique. They serve a market that is often taken advantage of due to credit. I know that I am a higher risk to a business the lower my credit score is so I expected to get hammered on my truck note (at least I would have a truck again) but I didn't. I pay $1,790 a month for an 06 Pete 379. Bad credit, good credit, whatever credit, that is a good deal. And this place does some serious volume so they keep a good selection. I go by there to get my truck serviced since my regular route is on I-10. Go by there yourself and check them out. more

Overall, getting a truck from there was a positive experience. I felt the sales staff was straight forward when I spoke to them on the phone and then when I got there to pick out my truck. There were no surprises. The shop did a good job with the inframe. I have put close to 500,000 miles on the engine they rebuilt. Truth be told I have run the hell out of the truck and it has not let me down so I am pretty pleased. more
