Never disappointed 4/7/2007

I have eaten here several times, often with guests, and we have never, ever been disappointed. On the contrary, it is one of a (sadly) small handful of truly worthwhile restaurants here in Williamsburg (try the Sardinian wine bar D.O.C. just around the corner on N 7th for another). \r \r The Zenkichi staff is extremely friendly and attentive and the food is absolutely delicious - with many, many options for a wide variety of tastes and an extensive sake offering. Try the Omakase (?let the chef decide?) tasting menus if you?re not sure what to order and you won?t be disappointed. Considering the quality of the food, the excellent service, and the unique and relaxing atmosphere, the cost is very reasonable. \r \r (Please don't take these other chip-on-shoulder naysayer gripes too seriously. Read between the lines and you'll quickly recognize their biases.) more

AVERAGE 2/20/2007

The decor is really cool. The service is very attentive but not too friendly. The booths are not as ""private"" as they claim to be. The food is ok. Some good dishes, some are not so good. Pros: decor Cons: so so food more

Avoid it if its important 2/10/2007

I called on Feb 1st for a table for Valentines day. They called me back on Feb 3rd and gave me a reservation for 2 at 10:15, and I accepted it. When I called back on the 9th to verify the time (I was out for a noisey meal when they called) they claimed to have no record of my reservation. Six hours later the gentleman that gave me the reservation called back to say they don't have a reservation but they could give me one the next day!!! 4 days before valentines day I am now stuck without a reservation without a care from this establishment that flat out lied to me about reserving a table for me. I normally don't complain and I've never written a review here, but if they can't honor a reservation that was made 2 weeks in advance, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. I can't imagine they put much effort into anything if they make such an elementary mistake and can't find a way to resolve it. Cons: Careless disregard more

Brilliant! 2/8/2007

The Kumamoto oysters and Pork Kikumi (sp) made me ponder making reservations for the next day. The Grapefruit Gelee desert is amazing, excellent when paired with the Frozen Black Sesame Mousse. Very paperback novel experience. Love it! A++ Cons: Reservations required more

Truly Zen - In Every Gist of the Word 1/22/2007

Whether you're on a date or having a get together with some friends, Zenkichi is THE best place for it. The private booths serve as intimate alcoves or literally private sections for your friends. In true Japanese fashion, you're greeted with an upbeat ""moshi moshi,"" and lead to your table immediatly. The ambiance of the space itself puts you in a good mood. \r \r The food is absolutely delicious! My boyfriend and friends have literally bordered on the Meg Ryan scene from Sleepless in Seattle when we tasted everything. The sake is phenomenal (it's best to buy by the bottle in my opnion). There are meat, fish, and vegeterian choices to satisfy everyone. \r \r Considering the concept, menu, and overall experience the place is moderatly priced. We all left Zenkichi smiling and feeling incredibly good. For 5 people and a total of 15-18 plates, Two bottles of sake, and desert we spent $300 plus tip. more

Best new Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn 1/17/2007

I have been here 2 times since they opened their doors a month or so ago, and I must say that this place is simply amazing in every aspect. The first thing to jump out at you is the dimly lit, rustic decor of the restaurant. The maze of corridors, mirrors, and bamboo-lined walkways hints of an old karate flic like Game of Death, minus Kareem Abdul Jabaar waiting on the top floor. I found myself at a cozy little booth, complete with a privacy drape and a buzzer to alert the waiter (no more complaining that they stop by too often/not often enough) when you are ready. They have an extensive selection of sake, much better quality and flavor than I have had at any other japanese restaurant. But the food is really why I will continue to go back again and again. I definitely recommend the pork kikumi, a tender suculent meat that is marinated for 3 days to achieve its tofu-like tenderness. Other plates that I would suggest include the maguro carpaccio and the shirako tempura. For such an experience you would expect the bill to be triple digits, but it is suprisingly easy on the pockets. For 2 people sharing 4 or 5 plates (they are tapas plates) and sake the bill was right around 50. This place is definitely the latest hidden treasure of Williamsburgh, and I am delighted to have a place of such quality in the area. This a prime date spot based on the seating arrangements and plate sizes, so take someone with you and go try it out. I'll bet you won't be disappointed! more

Simply Delightful - From the Food to the Service to the Ambience 12/11/2006

With a group of 7, this little Williamsburg hideaway (no sign outside the door, but you can decipher the location from the bamboo-ish decor outside) was simply delightful. First thing, you need reservations. This place gets packed very quickly (even though there has been very little advertisement). As you enter, there is a little sitting room to the left (on the small side though) and to the right is the hostess area, which is roped off (yes, it is a bit odd/pretensious). Everyone though is quite attentive and friendly. There are three floors, with the main dining room on the 2nd floor. The decor is simple and modern ? lots of wood elements. At the ends of the dining tables are ?call buttons? for the wait staff. Now to the food (which is tapas style) ? YUMMY! The miso cod was to die for, the tofu (both the warm and agedashi) was cooked to perfection, the oden was simple and tasty, pork belly was sinfully delicious and the fried chicken was fun to eat (but nothing too special). Anything not great? The foie gras was okay (not a huge fan) and the omelet dish was too heavy with cheese. Price ? not too shabby. Each one of us ordered 2 tapas dishes and the bill per person (including tip) was less than $40 each. Pros: food, ambience, service Cons: reservations are definitely needed more

More than the best!!! 11/24/2006

I've actually been in Japan before. While staying there,I realized that the Japanese foods we can eat in New York were not exactly ""real"" ones. Those are probably customized an American taste.I like the ""real ones"" much more,so I""ve been searching for a restaurant which could satisfy me.It was a long journy.\r I did't really expect Zenkichi when I visited there, actually.I thought it would be same as other restaurants in the city.\r But,when I stepped into the restaurant,I felt something different.\r Eventually, everything was excellent!!! the wait staff was pretty nice, though she couldn't speak English so well.Foods were also wonderful.I wish I could recommend what I ate,but it's very difficult to remember the name of each dishes.I liked the pork dish which had been cooked for 3 days(I can't remember the name,sorry).\r Only one thing I would like to complain about this restaurant is that the music was playing too loud. The selection itself wasn't bad,but it bothered our conversation littele bit.\r I highly recommend to make a reservatrion.I saw few people beeing rejected because of no reservatrion,\r more

must check out 11/24/2006

I had the best experience at this restaurant from beginning to end. The concept of private booths and small portions are ideal for couples and quaint groups to get to know each other on another level. The food had a touch of refinement that you can't find at other japanese restaurants(and I've been to plenty). They have an excellent sake list that complements the food very well. And to top it all off, the prices are very reasonable. From start to finish, the entire experience awakens all the senses. I highly recommend it. more

Rude and pretentious 11/23/2006

We stopped by last night. My partner and I eat out in Wburg pretty much daily and love Thai and Japanese food. That night we were after dinner already and just wanted to check out the decor...\r We went inside and the front girl told us ""we don't allow that"" and basically told us to leave!\r I guess it is the beginning of the end of my neighborhood ... Wannabe Meat Packing District \r "" we have a Zen garden"" losers. Good luck with your business, you certainly lost ours.\r more

DO NOT GO HERE. 11/22/2006

I recommend do not go to this place. While the concept is interesting (""private dining rooms""), it does not work well at all. The food is terrible. They try to be exotic, but it just comes out badly. The only decent dish was the tempura, and I don't need to pay those prices for tempura. The service is worse, even though each table has a call button for the wait staff. The wait staff does not speak english well, or even close to well. It's not worth the ""experience."" more

  • A night at Zenkichi can feel like a scene out of a 1940s paperback mystery. There's no sign on the wood-paneled exterior, just a light over the door, and a pretty hostess working the rope guards...
