Best new Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn 1/17/2007

I have been here 2 times since they opened their doors a month or so ago, and I must say that this place is simply amazing in every aspect. The first thing to jump out at you is the dimly lit, rustic decor of the restaurant. The maze of corridors, mirrors, and bamboo-lined walkways hints of an old karate flic like Game of Death, minus Kareem Abdul Jabaar waiting on the top floor. I found myself at a cozy little booth, complete with a privacy drape and a buzzer to alert the waiter (no more complaining that they stop by too often/not often enough) when you are ready. They have an extensive selection of sake, much better quality and flavor than I have had at any other japanese restaurant. But the food is really why I will continue to go back again and again. I definitely recommend the pork kikumi, a tender suculent meat that is marinated for 3 days to achieve its tofu-like tenderness. Other plates that I would suggest include the maguro carpaccio and the shirako tempura. For such an experience you would expect the bill to be triple digits, but it is suprisingly easy on the pockets. For 2 people sharing 4 or 5 plates (they are tapas plates) and sake the bill was right around 50. This place is definitely the latest hidden treasure of Williamsburgh, and I am delighted to have a place of such quality in the area. This a prime date spot based on the seating arrangements and plate sizes, so take someone with you and go try it out. I'll bet you won't be disappointed! more
