Best

This is great, I love this place with a very juicy bbq.

Worst

We went with high expectations but were met with overpriced cafeteria fare. Not good at all! The decore is thrown together in a MOD sort of way. Very disjointed. No warmth. Seated...

Awful & Stereotypical Customer Service 3/27/2011

I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody. The food was ok, but the service is AWFUL! A former co-worker (older Caucasian male - around my dad's age) and I (younger Asian female) went to Zeke's Smokehouse Barbeque (ZS-BBQ) on Honolulu for lunch because my co-worker was in town. I was his direct supervisor, so I took him out for his hard work, and we were both dressed in business suits. All of the workers at ZS-BBQ's were Caucasian - they thought we were dating or something because we were talking and laughing. They made us sat there for 30 minutes before asking what we would like to eat. Then it took them another 40 minutes to get our food. When we got our food - it was cold and not good to eat. more

It was okay for a bbq joint. 1/25/2009

I've never rated a resaurant before, but here it goes. I expected a large joint, but Zeke's is a small yet cozy eatery. Could decide if I should order the Memphis style baby backs or the Kansas City spare ribs. I decided to go with the baby backs, because hubby got the sampler platter, which meant that I could taste the spare ribs on his plate. Thank goodness I ordered the baby backs, because I thought the spare ribs were a little too fatty. The baby backs didn't have the meat falling off of the bone, but they were tasty. Also tasted the chicken on the sampler platter, it was very juicy with good flavor. I thought the cole slaw was a bit dry, and the garlic toast was a little too toasted. I rated this restaurant a 4 because the other members in my party did not have any complaints. Oh, if you have a large group, good luck. You'd better give them a call first. So there you go Zeke's! We'll more than likely go back again. Pros: Service was very good. Ample parking in the rear. Cons: A bit pricy. Small. more

The best barbecue in San Fernando Valley 12/14/2008

This is a great barbecue place. Very casual, but cute. The pulled pork sandwich is wonderful, and so are the sweek potato fries. Really good prices. Pros: Pulled Pork Sandwich, parking, location, prices more

Nice change 10/21/2008

Went to the Zekes in Hollywood which is pretty new.Never tried Louisiana barbeque,But , was taken by my New Orleans girlfriend.I must say,It was very tasty food.Have been back 3 times more.It should be a lot busier than what it is.Maybe ,The cuisine is too obscure for L.A.I do highly recommend the po-boy pork sandwich. damn it's good ! Makes a change from the typical L.A restaurants. Pros: Hard to park Cons: not too busy,Quick service more

Once bitten twice shy 8/11/2008

I ordered this for delivery with a friend of mine and less than an hour after eating we were both sick. The only other meal we both had that day was a frozen pizza which another friend, whom never got sick, shared. Though I am no doctor, I and my friend have been sick for almost 24 hours now. This is the first time I have ever gotten sick from food, but this is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies. Maybe this is a fluke case, because the food was otherwise delicious. In fact I am actually sad that I can never eat there again, but for me ""once bitten twice shy"" explains my feelings for Zekes right now. more

The best BBQ ouside of Texas! 10/16/2007

I moved to Dallas, Texas in 1974. I just moved back to Montrose where I found Zeke's Smokehouse. I fell in love with this restaurant. The brisket is cooked slow and is well worth the time and trouble. The pulled pork is absolutley wonderfull. The BBQ Beans are a wonderful treat and the home-made potato chips are excellent. A wonderful location in a great setting, if you like great BBQ, you will be very happy, and the price is well worth it. You all keep up the great work. Pros: The brisket, pulled pork are fantastic Cons: I can't find any more

Best Kansas City BBQ in Town! 8/6/2007

My husband and I went to dinner at Zekes this weekend. We've heard about how good they are but were blown away how fantastic they are! The food was absolutley delicious. I always order brisket whenever I go to a restaurant specializing in Kansas City BBQ and I have to say this is some of the best most tender brisket I've ever had. We had the choice to either go to Tony Romas which is just ok for BBQ or to try Zekes and were glad we made that choice because we had great service, delicious food and it came fast and were not disapointed with the prices because it was definatley worth it! There is something on the menu for everyone and every price range! Pros: Fast Service Cons: Needs more service with a SMILE more

Best BBQ in LA! 5/3/2007

I cant see why people complain about the price here, the foods so good it's amazing! Not to mention the quality of the meat, it comes from a USDA food supplier that's literally UPSTAIRS, talk about fresh! What makes zeke's stand apart is the quality of the meat and the variety of BBQ options. Think ""fancy BBQ"" and you've got Zeke's. Besides, you can get my favourite thing on the menu for $10 (a pulled pork sandwich tossed in a spicy vin. topped with coleslaw and a carolina BBQ sauce!!!). Ten bucks for a lunch is nothing, you can spend that much at Carls Jr! The service is friendliest around town. Vegetarians welcome!!! My girlfriend is a vegetarian and she can still go in there an leave happy, and full! There veggie burger comes with grilled vegetables and your choice of jack or chedder cheese. Don't even get me started on the sides, the mash patatoes should be illegal because of how so creamy and delicious they are, the creamy coleslaw is to die for, the applesauce comments the pork like white on rice, and don't even get me started on the greenbeans! Things to try, Zeke's Combo (alot of food), Pulled Pork Sandwich, the brisket, and the salmon! Pros: Friendly, fast service, large plasma TV! Cons: dont be silly more

Pricey for what you get 12/26/2006

I was surprised at the prices at Zekes, but, being a local, I needed to try them. My family got various ribs and side dishes to try. The cost was about as much as Tony Romas, but we had to stand in line to order out food. The ribs were not very good. The side dishes weren't good either. Cons: Cost, flavor more

A bit pricey, but worth it 6/21/2006

I'm trying to be a smaller eater, so I convinced my dad to join me in splitting the Zeke's combo plate - a red spicy pork sausage, four Kansas City ribs, a half pound of beef brisket, and a dark quarter of chicken. (Comes with two sides and Texas toast.) Pretty good! My mom prefers the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich. The sauces are good, not too thick or thin. The Kansas City is sweet, the Texas is spicy (not overly hot), and the honey mustard is a nice change of pace. Most items here seem a bit expensive, but once in a while, it's worth it. Pros: Delicious BBQ Cons: Bring your $ more

Good food, a little pricey 5/29/2006

The quality and taste of their bbq is really quite good -- I would take any bbq aficionado there and be confident they'll enjoy the food. The sides are also pretty righteous. And they've got Shiner Bock on tap. If the prices of the full meals put you off, try a sandwich -- they're good and moderately priced. Service -- so-so, but it doesn't ruin the meal. Pros: BBQ, Sides, Salads Cons: Service, Parking more

Uneven Quality and Service 11/18/2005

(November 2005): It's catch as catch can here. There is so much turnover in the wait staff that you never know what kind of service you will get -- sometimes it's fabulous, sometimes it's neglectful. The food is generally good (though somewhat pricey for what it is), although this evening my serving of beef brisket included a large slice of inedible gristle. Not sure what the people in the kitchen were thinking. On the whole, it doesn't seem like a very happy place to work, and this attitude conveys itself to the customers as a kind of coldness and indifference. Best to go at lunch or early evening -- even though the announced closing time is 9:00 PM, the place starts to close around 8:00, and late dining is very unpleasant with all the clatter and commotion of bringing in outside tables, closing the kitchen, etc. Pros: food generally good, Hush Puppies, outside seating Cons: Uncomfortable chairs, uneven service, somewhat pricey more

Zeke's Long-Horn beef ribs are a rip-off 11/5/2005

I recently tried Zeke's and was thought the Long-Horn Beef Ribs were a huge let down. Here's the deal, I don't care how good a BBQ place you are - if your beef ribs are lacking beef, all the flavor in the world will not make them better. Quite frankly, I've had far better at Tony Romas and for less $$$. The beef brisket sandwich was decent, but ribs is what I gauge a good BBQ joint on and Zeke's failed miserably. more

it's OKish 6/30/2005

Not a bad place at all, but like another review said, totally over rated! more

Average experience 6/12/2005

The atmosphere is stripmall-ish and it feels like you are eating in a commercial kitchen. The food was pretty good and the service was great for us, but the overall value wasn't all that great in my opinion. For such a stripped down setting and for the measly portions...I wasn't impressed. Compare this to Robin's in Pasadena and you won't bother making the trip to Montrose. I got the 'combo' which is $22...there was definitely not that much meat on the plate. Now the 'Garbage Can' combo at Robin's is worth the price at $24.95...and that leaves me with enough leftovers for at least 2-3 meals at home! No, I don't work for Robin's...if you need good bbq and its Monday night, go to Zeke's, but every other night of the week...well, you know where to go. Pros: bbq flavor, service Cons: value, atmosphere more

Good to go 6/9/2005

Things to try: My child absolutely loves the chicken littles...the kettle chips are a favorite for all ages. And kids eat free tuesday nights. The 1/2 chickend is what I usually get. It is smoked and seasoned with some sort of a rub I am assuming, that is very tasty. The grilled vegetables are a meal in itself...you get squash, onions, eggplant, and a couple other vegetables that are fantastic. This is something you normally cant find at any restaurant. Tri tip sandwich is pretty good with a bit of a spicy kick. Sides: Barbeque baked beans are super yummy. Mashed potatoes are just like homemade with lumps in it and very good gravy on the side. Corn on the cob is a special side on certain nights...which is pretty good, too. I think within time...this restaurant can be outstanding. Pros: half chicken, tri tip sandwich, grilled vegetables Cons: smaller setting, a little pricey more

OVER-RATED 12/3/2004

Very disappointed in the quality of bbq served here. I now understand why the reviews are mixed on this place. The sausage was not very good, the beef brisket was chewy and the sides were bland. Not a happy camper after eating at Zekes. Cons: , sausage not hot more

All Show, No Go 9/28/2004

The place looks great but the food is really nothing to go back for. The sauces are pretty good but the meat is lousy. Chewy ribs, not very hot-hot link, bland beans, really just nothing special. This place is also very expensive. Pros: looks good, clean Cons: , tough chewy ribs more

Good smoked meats 8/31/2004

The emphasis here is on the smoke. The sauce is optional sitting on each table in three different styles, and for me this is great because I like to taste the smoke and meat...not just the sauce. As for the sides--standard slaw, spicy collards, tangy beans and CRUNCHY kettle chips. Don't be deterred by little street parking. Head around back where there's plenty available. I recommend hitting the joint early if you can. The staff here is always pleasant and accommodating. I've been eating here for years and in 2008...it's still great. Pros: sauce options, friendly people more

disappointed 1/26/2004

I had tried this restaurant before and it was good so we went again and I was very disappointed. The food was O.K. but the service was very poor and the closed at 9:00 and about 8:30 they were already closing up and had the doors open and it was FREEZING!!!!! It was not a very nice experience at all. Pros: Food Cons: service more
