Excellent staff, good follow through, and wonderful bedside manner 1/27/2009

To start off, going to a critical care center for pets will always be a difficult endeavor. It's costly, your pet is in crisis, and you are putting your trust in staff you haven't worked with. Having worked with several vets in the west burbs and also with specialists in Schaumburg and Lisle, I feel compelled to share a deeply positive recommendation for the AVAH staff, particularly Dr. Mazzei and his excellent techs. He's an internal medicine specialist and gave the best care for our 10 year old Siamese cat who came in, almost lifeless in ketonic shock. They were realistic about our cat's chances, reviewed costs and gave us hope where appropriate. Most importantly they assisted us in making an informed choice regarding his care. While the bill was expensive, the care, communication, and follow through that continues a month and a half after the hospitalization really turned things around for our cat. I strongly recommend using this facility if your pet's care requires critical car more

Awesome! 11/18/2008

Having worked here and in countless sub-standard and average practices as a vet tech for over 25 years, I can honestly say that Arboretum View AH is an absolutely awesome place. They are state of the art in EVERYTHING and couldn't be directed by a more thorough, caring and detail oriented veterinarian. \r \r Sarah, I'm so sorry Emmy had complications with her recovery, but if she had a pyometra it's your own responsibility for not having her spayed to begin with. You can't blame any doctor, no matter how good they are, for the poor recovery of your animal when weakened by poor health, healing from surgery then has it's natural complications. Had she been healthier, she likely wouldn't have had so many troubles. It's the owners responsibility to keep their pet healthy, which is why they so highly recommend preventative care. If you had had her spayed when she was 6 months old, like they recommend, she never would have had a pyo and you could have avoided all that ensued. It's my pra more

Wonderful Place to Take your Pet 7/5/2008

We brought our dog to AVAH over two years ago because of lymphoma. No one else would deal with it. This is a very aggressive cancer with a 2-3 month time once it is diagnosed. We were given all the information, options and treatment protocols by the oncologist who is a very warm, caring person. This cancer continuously comes back no matter what is done. However, instead of only 2-3 months with our beloved dog, we had over 2 years!!! He enjoyed going in to see his "buddies" in oncology, He had to be dragged in to his previous vet. Big difference. We ended up bringing our 3 cats there also, transferring them from the vet we had when one started severe kidney failure which the previous vet had been seeing her for but didn't take care of it properly putting her Saturday visit off until Monday when "we will see what we should do". AVAH emergency was very angry at what the previous vet had done and demanded to see the litter mate who was also suffereing from kidney disease (they we more

Arboretum View Lacks Compassion, Organization and Courtesy 4/9/2008

Don't waste your time or money. Our puppy broke her leg and we were referred to Arboretum View by our vet. Our first appointment time was changed on us due to the unorganized staff. Our second appointment was changed because the first doctor we saw left the practice. I received a call two days before our 3rd appointment (with a new surgeon) and the staff person told me she didn't know why someone made our appointment at that time since the doc doesn't see patients that day. She then basically couldn't give me a set appointment time to reschedule; she could only give me times when we could sit and "wait" to be seen or we could drop off our puppy. But she didn't know if they would charge us to drop off the puppy. I explained that my husband and I both work downtown and need an actual appointment, nevermind it's time to get our puppy spayed but we've been holding off since she may need leg surgery. I've since left two messages for the hospital manager and have yet to hear from her. I wou more

PLEASE AVOID ARBORETUM VIEW!!!!! 3/14/2008

If you ever need care for your animal please do whatever you can to AVOID Arboretum View Animal Hospital in Downers Grove. I had taken Emmy there November 2007 where she was diagnosed with Pyometra, and she needed to be operated on immediatley. Since then I have had nothing multiple problems with the surgery wound it had an awful odor, the wound would bust open constantly, and puss would drain each time it opened. Every time I called they told me to go see my regular vet. I thought they would have at least asked me come back for a follow-up visit after the surgery to see that everything was ok with her and their work, but after the surgery was over they took our $2,326.35 and washed their hands of us (which I found out later was a rediculously high cost for that surgery). I took Emmy to the vet today because she had lump the size of an egg sticking out of her stomach along the stitch line filled with puss and it busted open and poured out all over the floor I went into our regular more

It's unfortunate 2/4/2008

Seems Arboretum View is losing sight of the importance of what they should be doing for the sake of making a buck. In the past I always recommended them, however, lately noticed that the care my furry ones have been getting is more like "take two aspirin and call me in the morning" and here is your bill. Personally, I'm shopping around for a new vet. I'm looking for heartfelt devotion for my animals with a more reasonable cost and less recommended/senseless follow-ups that result in padding AVAH?s bank account. Bigger is not always better!! more

Very friendly and knowledgeable! 12/29/2007

When My cat got a cold, I was able to take him in on a Saturday and was treated very well. They staff was so nice to me and My cat. The doctor examined My cat and asked questions to get a through medical history. He said that FIV positive cats need have immune boosting supplements now and then. (FIV is like HIV and is spread the same way) I asked him what should I be giving MY cat to help him avoid getting sick. He gave me advice and since then My cat has never been sick. While I was there we were never treated as though we carried a plauge. They made me feel like he was a normal cat with no problems. I'm really glad that they are now our vet. more

Compasionate Care, althought expensive 9/5/2007

My dog was dealing with a chronic condition (Epilepsy) and I brought him here several times for treatments that included alternative/integrative care, ER admission and hospitalization. He was always given great care. In the end when his health took a turn for the worst the Drs were very compasionate and honest about discussing prognosis and treatments. When it was time to let him go, the Euthanasia was performed in a quiet visitation room, dim lights and on a cushioned mat. During the year my dog visited the place on/off he always got great compasionate care, althought I do have to admit that the services were quite expensive in comparison with other clinics. more

Misdiagnosis 4/20/2007

In 8/06, the radiologist at this hospital misdiagnosed my Cavalier. He said he had Dialated Cardiomyapathy and Vegetative Endocarditis. They recommended he take meds that he did not need, serious meds like Clavamox and Enacard. \r I paid a lot of money to go there and get the ultrasound. After taking my dog for three other tests, all with certified board cardiologists, I was told this was a wrong diagnosis, and that my dog had MVD, not DCM, a completely different disease. There was also no Endocarditis. The hospital caused me a lot of pain and expense. When I brought it to their attention, and sent them all contradictory paperwork from the other two hospitals, being university hospitals, they never called back to explain or apologize. I did have one contact there who promised to respond, never did, then did not answer my requests for follow-up calls or the one email I sent, with also no reply. I am very disapointed as they were recommended to me as a specialty hospital and I w more

Wonderful Place! 9/28/2006

I came here b/c I was very unhappy with my current vet and found these people to be wonderful. They asked a ton of questions during the first visit and the vet who saw my dog took his time and got to know him. My dog is frightened and nervous in new situations but they were able to draw his blood for a heartworm test with no troubles. They were amazing! PROS: Work well with nervous pets! CONS: more

Super Expensive Emergency Care 9/15/2005

While the care they provide here is excellent, and they do have specialty staff on duty, be prepared to pay for it. I had the unfortunate opportunity to bring a cat here for emergency care for a UTI. They charged $30 per hour for him just to be there. That was $800. Then they misdiagnosed him and the cat ended up back there a week later for emergency surgery, which they billed me $2500 for. The kicker is that if you can't pay for the treatment RIGHT THEN AND THERE when you bring an injured animal in, they won't treat/help it. They are a money making machine here, and unfortunately this comes long before care of your animals. more
