I wrote the first LA Best Margarita artcile years ago. Now, this one is NOT it. Okay, but nothing special. The sour mix is simply not up to the task of the better liquors. Surpris...

Enchiladas De cuero (Leather Enchiladas) and Salsa de la salsa de la pizza (Salsa from Pizza Sauce) 2/29/2008

Not to mention, "Margaritas of glass chips"... Last night, our $80 should have been comped. The salsa had no flavor... chips were good. While drinking my small $12 margarita, I rake my tongue across the inner edge of the glass and... OUCH! The edge is chipped... a sharp little nook in there. The waitress gladly took it back and apologized... wasn't HER fault, but it was annoying. Then... I am dead serious: the enchiladas were so over cooked on the ends, that the tortilla was dessicated and when we bit into them, we practically broke our front teeth on the leathery, inedible tortilla. All of this was made known to the waitress, who actually was quite apologetic, but at that point, I'd say, "if you ever want to see me again, you'd better conjure up a contrite manager real soon who will at least buy me a drink or two, if not just comp the entire dinner." But alas, nothing of the kind occurred. I paid the bill, but... I"m sending this note, in a letter back to the restaurant today asking for a full refund. I thought the dinner was deplorable, and I can't sleep knowing I paid $80 for it. Someone wrote in their comments that the place should be renamed "Mexican Kitchen." I'm afraid that that's being overly kind. The place has a nice atmosphere and some genuinely kind wait help (except that the table bussers also are a bit hasty about grabbing plates... must be a plate shortage in the "Spanish" kitchen, eh?) But alas, I digress. Spanish Kitchen may be a "place to be seen," but you won't see me there. Follow up: 2 APR, They ignored my letter, COMPLETELY. Credit card issuer is now on them to issue a refund. I can't say enough negative things about a business that ignores complaint letters. Follow up: 3 MAY, SK did indeed refund my dinner costs at the behest of Amex. Thank goodness! Pros: Nice waitress, nice atmosphere and decor Cons: Food safety (chipped glasses), overcooked enchiladas, awful salsa more

Spicy -- in the good sense 5/11/2007

The Spanish Kitchen is one of my favorite ""repeat"" restaurants, especially as I love the seasonings and the garnishes around the great main entree. The Sweet Potato Crusted Salmon is my favorite. And I love that they have the fried ice cream. Pros: Dark enough for dates Cons: Some of the tables are strangely boxed in more

Great Mexican Gourmet, Lovely Atmosphere 5/6/2007

We were there for Cinco De Mayo and it seemed really hectic and busy but the friendy hostesses sat us right when we came in. The service was surprisingly fast, the server was really helpful with recommendations. We had brought friends from out of town who thought the Salmon was AMAZING and made us promise to take them to the Spanish Kitchen again next time they were in town. I liked the fajitas, it may be pricey but you get such a large meal it's worth every penny. The atmosphere was great, lots of colorful candles and mexican decor that added to the experience. Oh and lets not forget the margaritas!! delish!!!!\r I really recommend this place if you want a good meal and a social atmosphere! Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Margaritas Cons: NO PARKING! more

MOST BEAUTIFUL BARTENDERS IN TOWN 5/4/2007

I went in on a busy Friday night with a group and had a blast. The Bartenders were fast, attentive and they made the most incredible drinks. I ask this green eyed beauty to make me a different margarita and she made the tastiest drink I've ever had. It was fabulous. I would also recommend the Mojitos. The music was a little loud but it was later in the evening. The price was not bad either. I would highly recommend this place. Pros: Service, Food, Drinks Cons: Parking, Restroom facilities more

Great ambiance but not worth the price. 12/9/2006

The waitress was nice and knowledgable yet incredibly slow. The wait on food took forever, the portions were tiny and the drinks overpriced. They made mistakes upon mistakes on our orders and really, no free chips & salsa?!! After stating that they would be able to make seperate checks to make it easier on us, they refused and left us with a single 1000$ bill to figure out amongst 20 people. Nice looking place but the service and food could have been much, much better for what it's worth. Pros: great scene, vast menu Cons: food portions vs. price, service, hostess POINTED to where we we're seated rather than leading us. more

Grand Central Cafe - an undiscovered jewel 11/16/2006

This little cafe is right next to 500west, a boutique hotel inhabiting what was the YMCA for many years. The cafe actually opens into the hotel, so it is accessable from both the street as well as the hotel. There are some amazing old black and white photos of the city, as well as the train station that still stands several blocks away. It is a perfect breakfast spot, especially if you are at the W, right around the corner! more
