Editorial review from Citysearch 11/10/2012

I am incredibly disappointed in my dining experience this evening at the San Antonio location. I took my 6 year old for a special dinner, just the two of us while his dad and brothers attended a football game. I asked the waiter if I needed to order a meal for my child or if he could share mine, to which he said he could share. I ordered the 4 course meal for $39. My son nibbled and although most of the food was untouched ( I was feeling a little bad at the wastefulness), I knew that the place was going to have more than one woman and child could share. When my bill came it showed a charge for two at $39 each and I was shocked. I asked the waiter about it, he got the manager, who graciously (note the sarcasm) only charged me the $39 plus $16 for the extra cheese and chocolate. I didn't push it as my kid was ready to leave and I am not one to make a big stink. However, a customer was lost tonight. All for $16. I hope it was worth it Mr. Manager. more

Less then impressed 2/19/2011

We were there for my wife's 40th birthday, and I called weeks in advance to set reservations for 14 people. We arrived a few minutes early and I informed them that there were a few last minute cancels, and we were only 11 people. They asked us to wait at the bar while they prepared our table. When we were seated, they had 2 tables there were close to each other, but half the table would be sitting with their backs to the other table, so we decided to just move 3 chairs over and make our selves fit around the larger table. Now, we understand you can not move the tables so we just adjusted. While we were waiting to order our meal, it seem that a near by table was upset at our level of noise and asked to move. At this point, we were all on our first drinks and still pretty calm. While I was up in the hall way looking for our waiter to ask a question, I was approached by a man that later identified himself as a manager. He said they were getting complaints that we were loud and offensive with our language, but at that time he would request that we tone it down. He did not want to come in and address the entire table, but while I was there, he wanted to let me know that the other table in our area was also complaining. he also mentioned that they were not happy that I changed the number in my party when i showed up, so this was somehow all my fault. Very unprofessional, if you have a problem with a table, come tell the table. Before our meal even showed up, the other table said that we ruined their 8 year olds birthday party, and they asked to leave. In the end, the tables around us filled up, and nobody else had an issue, but during our meal, we had very slow service. In the 3 hours we were there, our waiter rarely come to check on us, the food portions were small, and when we did see our waiter, he kept ""forgetting"" our drinks, so we assume the manager was trying to cut us off. We had to continually make trips to the bar ourselves. Twice we requested another plate of meats, and it never showed up. In the end, the service was well below what you would expect for a nice dinner. We have decided to never go back here and will steer anyone we talk to away from here. They do not try to make this a nice meal, and they lack or service, small portions, and unprofessional management is disturbing for the amount of money we were spending. more

Terrible Experience 2/13/2011

My fiance and I made reservations for a nice Valentine's Day dinner 2 weeks ahead of time. We arrived and checked in with the hostess... waiting 35 minutes while other couples arrived and were seated before us. Finally we told her that we were hungry and we wanted to cancel our reservation when she says ""have you checked it yet?"". We checked in with her as soon as we walked in. She proceeded to tell us our reservation was at 9 when we were told 7:30 the day we made the reservation. She offered no apologies or even a ""we'll get you seated as soon as possible"". Would rather not spend $150 on dinner when it starts out with a rude teenager at the front door. more

""Art Food Hustle"" 3/3/2010

Stale bread, basic fondue, AMAZINGLY small portions (for two at $94 a smaller plate) and (at least) a good desert (which is bundled with a meal for two so you get it whether you'd choose it or not). With a decent bottle of wine you can get out for $150-$200 and go to Taco Bell to eat the rest of dinner. Yes, If I wanted desert (for dinner), I'd probably go here and just save my money and get a white chocolate fondue. But the wait staff has SUCH A CANNED sales pitch-- they don't' seem to understand that they SOUND LIKE SALES PEOPLE more than servers wanting to help customers get what they want. Basically, there was NOTHING I ""wanted"" so I ordered the $94 plate for two with about $12 worth of seafood and MAYBE 2 oz, of tough steak (NY Strip?-- who'd know after boiling it in this oil/sauce). OK, I believe if I'm going to order a meal and wine for about $180 out the door that there ought to be some MEAT-- yes, more than four shrimp, a few small lobster tails and four pieces of sausage-- I felt like it was ""steak and lobster"" night at Dennys! GIVE ME A NY STRIP STEAK and I'll cut it up and ""deep fry"" it, but don't try and con me with extremely TINY portions of food, ""pitch"" me on your favorite (need to move it) selections or stop and ask me if I need water (four times) and not get it. It wasn't like this place was busy-- it was like this place was ""closing business"" and the wait staff was fast on the pitch, slow on the service and after telling the manager straight to his face-- he brought another 4 Oz. of steak out and then the waitress apologized for it all but: I DO NOT GO OUT TO A NICER RESTAURANT TO BEG FOR FOOD OR ENGAGE IN DRAMA WITH THE WAIT STAFF... I GO TO BE SERVED A FAIR PORTION OF FOOD (not stale bread and excuses). Sorry, but I can't give more than a 1 star here even though the manager tried, but didn't smile once so this is how I think most people would feel and react after dining in some better restaurants over many years and at many better establishments-- sorry, but I can honestly say this hit the 10 year mark for WORST dining experience of the 2000's. I don't care about your wine list or atmosphere when the ""service is nervous"" and the REAL food portions (not bread and basic salad bar veggies but the MAIN course) is inexcusably small and misrepresented. Pros: WIne variety but still priced above average Cons: Price and server ""pitch"" more

Great Experience 6/2/2009

This place is alot of fun. It's great for date and the food is good.\r \r Be prepared to spend 2-3 hours there. Also, be prepared to spend around $100. (for two)\r \r Too pricey for the average couple to go more than once or twice a year. Pros: Fun Cons: Pricey more

A Fon-Don't 5/22/2009

I visited this place the other day on a date, the fond memories and grease burns will last for sometime. \r We wanted to try something new, so my date thought fondue is a must-do! Our server was nice and well versed on the menu items. My guy orders the cooking method ""Bourguignonne European-style fondue in\r cholesterol-free canola oil."" This is basically a cauldron of cooking oil used to fry up our plate of raw items. Problem was that we were seated at a defective table, with no setting to control the heat!!! The oil got extremely hot and everything we placed in the cooking vessel created a sizzling, rolling boil of oil that spattered, burning my arm and scorching our food. I shrieked in shock as plumes of steam puffed an S.O.S. to our waiter from our dining cubicle. The waiter turned our stove top off (which did not work 'cause it was broken) and moved us to another booth to start the cooking experience all over again. The manager apologized and brought a complementary lobster tail for us to share. Now this next cooking vessel was set to a very low heat by their staff to be on the safe side. Our food took FOREVER to cook, but me & my date chatted to make the time pass. We were there 'till closing slowly cooking up our little morsels of meat. It was 8 PM when we arrived and by 11PM we were on our dessert chocolate entree. Just me and my date and the ambiance of a tired staff, vacuuming floors and clearing tables. Overall, my date paid over $100 for this experience. What a night! Pros: Yummy decadent desserts. Cons: Burn a whole in your wallet & your skin! more

Way Over Price 11/23/2008

I don't mind paying for good food, but this was not good...it was terrible and highly overpriced. I will not be going here again, once was enough. The service is good, the food was nonexsistent and very time consuming. I you are looking to try something different once, okay but if you think you are going to get a good full filling meal wrong place to go. Fondues are easy and can be made at home for special gathering...and cheaper too. more

Was so bad, it made us sick before we left the parking lot!!!!! Avoid like the plague!!! 7/26/2008

Do yourself a favor, if you want to experience fondue, you would be better off just buying the ingredients yourself, because you will be getting more for your money. Ok, let me explain my dinning experience. I have never had fondue, but, I am pretty familiar with the process. My husband and I go, looking for something out of the ordinary. We had both wanted to try it but never really had the opportunity to eat there. We arrive, without making reservations, and are politely told that we would be waiting approximately 45 minutes. Ok, no problem. We go the bar, order tea and wait. That gives us a chance to look over the menu and decide what we want. We are then seated and served. Our server was attentive and very informative. He made sure we knew how long our menu items needed to be cooked. After our sumptuous and rather expensive meal,(100.02) we leave. As my husband and I are walking to our car, he turns to me and mentions not feeling very well. He then doubles over and proceeds to get sick. I make sure he is ok (I'm a nurse), then emmediately proceed to our home. In a fit of shock and anger, I ask my husband to call the restaurant to inform the staff of the incident in the event that another diner gets sick. He is told that the owner will call him tomorrow. I call the restaurant just to see if anyone has any information for me and I am met with condesention, presumtion, and most importantly, NO appoplogy from anyone. The owner calls me and all I get is a story about making sure his behind is covered, what with the recent outbreaks of foodbourne illnesses, no compensation and a weak attempt at an apology. For a mock upscale restaurant, they really don't act upscale. They have all the pretenses of an upscale eatery( high price menu items, extensive wine list, flare bartender) but their customer service lacks considerably. I don't know what made my husband sick, be it the food, preperation, but I hoped for more than ""sorry"". Pros: Polite servers Cons: Bad parking, horrible customer service, condesending management more

Fun in groups! make a reservation! 12/10/2007

Yes, this place is WAY OVERPRICED but...its fun! Its a date night sort of place or when you go out with another a couple. You will pay over $80 per couple (not including drinks) so be prepared. They make a great Strawberry Shortcake Martini though! You can go for just a cheese fondue course and drinks or dessert and drinks though. I would do that next time. But for your first time try the three courses. It takes a couple of hours to get through it but its worth it. Then the second time just go for dessert. I love it and its a lot of fun. Pros: martinis and its just fun Cons: expensive! more

Wonderful experience 4/29/2007

I went to this restaurant not knowing what to expect. What I found was a wonderful dining experience. The food was very good, from the wine, to the salad, to the three cheese fondue, to the entree of lobster and various meats, to the chocolate with Baileys dessert. The food, the wine, the service, the ambience and the company all added up to a very memorable and enjoyable evening. This is not a rush to eat, in and out type place, but a place to relax and enjoy. I am looking forward to my next visit. \r \r (This program will not allow me to write the name of the restaurant; apparently the second word of the name of the restaurant is ""inappropriate"" :) more

Horribly Bland Food 4/19/2007

I went here thinking it would be a first class experience based on their advertising hype.\r After my meal, I found that it was all hype and no substance to back it up.\r \r The food had absolutely no seasoning and was simply raw meat cut into cubes\r and thrown carelessly onto a plate. As for the desert, the pastry was very dry and\r the strawberries were unwashed. As if that wasn't enough, the chocolate was very runny\r and we could actually see the water that they mixed in with it. Pros: Nice Area Cons: Poor culinary, slow service. more

Great Date Restaurant 11/14/2006

This resaturant is such a great place to take a special date. I was a little worried at first that it wouldn't be very filling but I was wrong. We ordered the Big Night Out which includes the cheese fondue appetizer, caesar salad, entree (steak, shrimp, chicken etc.) and chocolate fondue for dessert. The wine list is extensive as well. The restaurant has a great romantic ambiance without being snobby. It is such a great leisurely meal that you really get to spend time with the person you are with and have a really enjoyable time. Pros: ambiance, dessert more

Your own dinner and show. 11/5/2006

Great evening out. You choose the courses and direct the food preparation. The food is fresh, the fondu outstanding and lots of fun in the preparation. The waiters and waitresses are helpful, appear at just the right times, and you never feel rushed. You are truly the ""King of the Castle"". Pros: An evening of entertainment and dining. Cons: Parking is difficult more

One of San Antonio's most romantic restaurants. 9/19/2006

Great place for a romantic date! Highly recommend to make reservations and ask for the private booths. Pros: Different dinning concept Cons: It's a little expensive but well worth it. more

Nice Place to Go with a Group and/or Special Occassion 8/24/2006

The Fondue is quite good, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. Make no mistake, though, this place is all about wine and the fondue just coincidentally goes fabulously with the vino. This is one great place to have a gathering of 3-4 couples and share a table. It is a great ""Special Occassion Place"" which is code for this place is pricey, but worth it. To check it out without going completely broke, go for drinks and a fondue appetizer or coffee and the chocolate Fondue Dessert. That little play is very well received at the restaurant because they know if you try it, you'll be back to tell them, as Austin Powers says, ""Oh Fondue Me Baby!!"" Pros: Ambience of a dimly lit restaurant, wine bottles stacked to the ceiling, quite Cons: Expensive more

Wow!! Very impressive 7/20/2006

The MP restaurant is one of the best I have ever eaten at. The atmosphere is quiet and classy and the service is outstanding, friendly and adaptable to your needs. The food and wine are out of this world. The wine list is the largest I have ever seen. I would recommend The MP to anyone looking for a great place for that special occasion or just taking a friend to dinner.\r \r Pros: Ambience, Food, Service Cons: not for small children more

Fondue is fun 7/18/2006

The restaurant is dark and relaxing. The cheese fondue and the dessert are the best things, but I don't like going to a restaurant just to have to cook my entree when I'm there - seems to defeat the purpose. Great wine selection and cocktails. I can't see it as a place I'd go all the time but it was a fun one-time experience. Pros: Pretty interior, cheese fondue & dessert are very good Cons: You have to cook your shrimp, beef, etc. before you can eat it. more

User review by sadie98 4/30/2006

This place is wonderful. My husband and I went and loved everything about it. It was very romantic and the service was outstanding. We ordered the ""Big Night Out"". It was plenty of food. Be sure to save room for the dessert (included with the Big Night Out). The chocolate fondue is to die for!! This is our new favorite restaurant. And...the wine list is the absolute best in San Antonio. We ate including appetizers, salad, entree and dessert for around $80. not including tax and tip. What a bargain. We will be back very soon. Pros: They take reservation, Food, Service more

Fun For One Time Only 11/6/2005

My husband and I had the Lobster Indulgence for $84. This included a cheese fondue, caesar salad, main course fondue, and dessert fondue for two. We also selected the German Reisling (very good) from their extensive wine list for $28. The food was good and the service was fine, but the horrible soft rock playing in background, the children, and the pajama-clad woman and guest who only came for dessert, did not add up to a $112+tip value for our dinner experience. Between the casual ambience, the haughty prices, and the reservation-only policy, it seemed the restaurant was having an identity-crisis. We left feeling like we didn't get our money's worth. There are far better restaurants in San Antonio to spend $112+tip to get great food, value and ambience. We certainly enjoyed each other's company and the novelty of the fondue. It was nice once, but we won't be back. Pros: service, novelty Cons: poor value, VERY expensive more
