good time 5/17/2007

I recently dined at the Grey Moss Inn with my boyfriend. I had been hearing people talk about it all week. There were good and bad remarks, but mostly good, so I thought I would give it another go. I hadn't been in such a long time, and alot has changed. We had an incredibly wonderful experience there. I don't remember there being linens on the tables, so I was quite surprised to find a beautiful dining room. I do remember the rustic part. Some people sitting next to us had a rude comment for everything, including the "rustic" atmosphere. I think that's part of the charm. It seemed as though they went out that night to have a bad time, instead of a good one. We had a blast anyhow. I also don't remember the food being that good! The chef prepared the most outstanding hawaiian sea bass. I love morel mushrooms. My boyfriend was boring and got a steak, but I soon realized how un- boring his steak was. He ordered a medium rare smoked/grilled prime rib, complete with homemade horseradish sauce. The waitress was extremely outgoing and helpful. She answered our thousand questions without batting an eyelash. She also coached us through the wine book. I call it a book because it is huge. We had a little snag when the wine we all decided on was out, but I guess that's what happens when you have so many wines. Our waitress was quick to reccomend something similar, and was right on. Overall we had a great dinner. I just wish we would'nt have sat next to Mr. and Mrs. "we're too good for everyone". Pros: Outside looked fun but it was too hot, great food, excellent friendly service Cons: I don't have enough money to eat there as often as I would like! more

Lost Luster 5/13/2007

When phoning for reservations, I got Dr. Jekyll. The Maitre D' was Mr. Hyde. Bubbly phone person said if upon my arrival I wanted to be seated inside rather than outside, that would be easily accomodated. M.D. was exasperated when my dinner guests preferred to be inside. This resulted in a 20 minute, standing wait inside, where it smelled, well, mossy, next to an empty table that was right on the main pathway inside the door. Guess where we were eventually seated. By far and away, the worst table in the house. Sweaty waiter (remember, this is in the AC'd part of the restaurant) showed up 5 minutes after we were seated to get the drink order. If you order a martini stirred, not shaken, your drink is served room temperature. Bartender doesn't know the difference between "stirred" and "neat." Speaking of the bartender.... Finally got the merlot 10 minutes after the somewhat grisly steaks were served. Back to Mr. Sweaty. Had to read all of the specials, which really weren't special (or tantalizing as the menu would claim) at all. Didn't know that some of the items he read were gone. The house salad was on par with the salad you would get at Denny's. The decaf coffee was weak. The bus person a few tables away delighted in dropping, rather than gently placing the soiled plates into his big, grey tub. 45 minutes before closing time, the surrounding abandoned tables were stripped of the table cloths, down to the bare, mismatched table tops. Does somebody want to go home? Pros: Rustic, country setting Cons: Poorly trained staff, including chef more

best food and ambiance to be found! 3/27/2007

A few friends and I recently dined at the legendary Gray Moss inn and found the food and service infallible. Located out in romantic hill country in an idyllic town called Grey Forest, one can almost believe upon entering this tiny wildlife refuge that this is the realm brought to life by the Brothers Grimm. Upon arrival we were greated with enthusiasm by the professional, friendly staff , and aromas wafting from the huge mesquite grill in the center of the patio was enough to make even the most recalcitrant of tummies gurgle in anticipation. We were then escorted into a dining room that mesmerized the eyes with its gorgeous array of handsome tablecloths, shining silverware and polished glasses, old portraits on the walls, a fireplace, and mutitudes of glowing candles dripping wax in a kaleidoscope of colors. I dined on the fabulous Osso Bucco ( braised veal ) while my companions enjoyed steak, prime rib and lobster. Our knowledgeable French waiter ( yes, a real Frenchman! ) recommended a fine, adventurous wine from the vault and served our drinks and food with a flourish. After the entree, we then satiated ourselves with Pros: Great all around!!! more

A Very Happy Birthday!!! 3/26/2007

Recently I took my husband to the Grey Moss inn restaurant for his 24th birthday and the experience was more than delightful. My husband for past year had been going through a lot of personal problems and I wanted to really make his day memorable. We arrived around 6:30 and were actually greeted by two waiters who were prepping the outside dinning area, both were very nice greeted us both and showed us right in. We were seated right away in this corner table tucked away in a very elegant part of the restaurant; it had such a romantic environment we felt like we were in a romantic movie. The waiter soon followed and with him a great and vibrant personality. He was awesome just what my husband and I needed for this occasion. My husband and I are seafood lovers so we ordered the lobster. While we were waiting I still couldn't decide what alcoholic beverage to drink, our waiter suggested that I allow him to make me one of his best martini. It was excellent everything he said it would be. Our food arrived which looked and tasted great, the serving of lobster and sides was perfect. My husband was so pleased at how well proportioned the lobster was. And of course we had to have dessert the "strawberry supreme" to die for it had large strawberry slices marinated in Grand Marnier served with vanilla ice cream and of course whipped cream, so simple and so great. It was everything I asked for a romantic dinner by candle light, great drinks, great food, great staff, and of course great company. Oh yeah and by the way the martini was called the "luscious peach" and it put the L in luscious. My husband had a wonderful time he was so impressed. I am thankful to the Grey Moss Inn for making my husband's birthday such an unforgettable night. more

Terrible customer service!! Mediocre food. 2/18/2007

We were celebrating Valentines a day early. My boyfriend arranged a "romantic" dinner at what is suppose to be the most romantic restaurant in town....what a let down. Our reservations were at 7:00pm. When we arrived that restaurants population was scarce. The hostess was on the phone, and did not acknowledge us. Finally, the manager came up and asked could he help us,in a less than polite tone. He sat us. We ordered some wine and a salad to hold us over till our dinner arrived. They also provided us with this olive roll. The olive roll was less than fabulous. Cold green olives in the middle of bread. We both ordered a steak entree, the order was placed at approximately 7:10pm. We finished our salads and bread around 7:40-7:45pm. Around 8:10 the waiter came and said, it shouldn't be much longer. Around 8:25pm the manager came and said that the ticket was lost. He looked annoyed at us. We had not made a single complaint. I didn't want to ruin our Valentines by complaining. I would like to note that neither the manager or the waiter apologized for the confusion. We did finally get our food around 8:45pm. I expected the food to be steaming hot like it just came from the grill. My food was warm at best. The steak definitly did not just come off of the grill. My potato was cold. The foods taste wasn't horrible, but it was not worth the price. The steak lack seasoning of any kind. I was expecing to be compensated somehow on the bill. The waiter brought us our ticket, all $90 of it. There was no apologies and no compensation. Furthermore, when we were leaving the manager was standing at the front and didn't bother to say goodbye, give an apology, or thank us for coming. I will NEVER go there again. It was horrible. We would have been better off going to a modest steak house like Saltgrass, the service there is 110% better. Pros: location is very nice Cons: sevice provided by waitstaff and Manager is HORRIBLE more

Delicious food and excellent customer service 12/18/2006

My best friend took me to Grey Moss for my birthday this year and it was excellent. I started the evening with crab cakes topped with a fried quail egg (you could hear moans of pleasure from that one), followed by the sampler salad (which was shared by myself and my friend) with a scrumtious White French Dressing (more moaning). For dinner I had wild boar but by that time I was stuffed so I had to take it home. When I asked for the waiter to tell me the desserts just so I could hear them he laughed and said Chocolate Creme Brulee (my favotire) and when I said OH No and I am so full he returned with some in a To Go box and said it was a present for me. Now that is service. I was treated like an old friend not just another customer and for me that is what makes the dining experience. I can't wait to visit Texas again and eat the the Grey Moss Inn. Save a Creme Brulee for me. Pros: Thumbs up all around. Cons: It's too far from Atlanta Georgia! more

So disappointing 12/5/2006

For my job I take a lot of clients out to dinner. So over the years I feel like I have eaten at some really great restaurants and some really bad restaurants. Grey Moss is below average. Their service just ruined the night. We went on a Tuesday night. They only had two tables with guest when we first arrived and only one table of three guests came after us. That table left way before we did. They seemed to order about the same amount of food as my table of three. One of my clients sent his entree back and the chef came out to ask why. My client said that he did not like the flavor which I tasted and it was not good. The chef and server made us feel like we should apologize for not liking the food. We were concerned since the first entree?s took a really long time to be served that the second entree would be even longer. It actually came back at a reasonable time frame. We rarely saw our server and once had to go and request for him to come to our table. The service was SUPER slow and after that one table left we were the only people in the restaurant. I was going to get dessert but it took so long for him to come back and take our dessert order I lost interest and it was getting late. Also I ordered a bottle of wine from the wine list. When I ordered the second bottle they tell me that the one I picked out was out of stock and the first bottle was the reserve which was $30.00 more. My company puts us on a wine price limit and that $30.00 extra put me over the limit but it would have looked bad if I declined the second reserve bottle that I just ordered. I will never go back to this restaurant again, and I will voice my opinion to others as well. One thing that was very tasty was the escargot and the hostess was nice! more

Service with a scowl 11/15/2006

I have gone to The Grey Moss Inn a couple times a year for probably 7 or 8 years. The ambiance is terrific and there's nothing wrong with the food. I've never eaten inside because outside is so charming. However, I am starting to notice that I am enjoying myself less and less with each visit. I don't believe that any of the servers there know anything about customer service. If you ask for anything special at all, you are subject to sarcastic remarks carried out as just jokes. By the end of the meal the server makes you feel as if you somehow owe him and apology. I probably won't be back to the Grey Moss Inn uless I hear of some major turnover with the staff there and a commitment to customer service is renewed. Pros: a nice get away Cons: customer service that will drive you away more

Going downhill fast.... 2/26/2006

I took my wife to Grey Moss Inn when we were dating back in 1996. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. Sorry to say, every visit since then has been more and more disappointing. Prices have soared, steaks have gotten gristly and flavorless, and the service level is dramatically lower. It's gotten to the point we'll never return unless they bring in new management and staff. A chef that knows how to choose and prepare steaks would also be nice. Unfortunately, this seems to be the trend with many former "institutions" in SA. Pros: secluded, romantic, wooded Cons: slow more

great for parties 9/13/2005

For fine dining pleasure where the good food is endless and the wine flows in an abundance, the grey moss is the place to be! Been around for 76 years and will probably be around for 76 more!! PROS: Great for Parties! CONS: N/A more

Just Good When I Was Hoping For Special 7/30/2005

It's a little bit of a drive from San Antonio and I was hoping for something special. The restaurant advertises an extensive wine list, but the first two bottles I ordered were out of stock. The steaks were just good, but at these prices should have been that and more. My daughters wanted to share an entree and the waitress advised me that there would be a sharing charge. That was overkill on an otherwise expensive evening. Someone needs to inject a little excitment into the menu. Pros: romantic setting, good cuts of meat Cons: expensive more

Only 1 flaw in the Armor 6/18/2005

My wife and I had our weddin greception here in 2004 and we were amazed not only at the quality of the service, but more importantly with the quality of food. Everything was wonderful and we couldn't have been happier. We returned this year for our first wedding annivarsary. Food was still amazing, but the host ignored us, greeted and sat three other parties that had arrived after we did! We had reservations, and were standing directly in front of him. How rude. I had to step in a say something before he ignored us for a forth time. The service the remainder of the evening was great and the food seemed even better than I remembered. It was unfortunate that the evening had to start off on such a bad note. Overall however, the food is to die for. Pros: Excellent food, ambience, atmosphere Cons: remote, small, can be crowded more

BEST PLACE ON EARTH! 6/5/2005

The food at the Grey Moss Inn was indescribably incredible! My filet was perfectly cooked and so amazingly tender! The lobster was sweet and rich~ perfectly seasoned! My husband loved his steak and shrimp as well.... everything was amazing! The owner & manager, as well as all the staff, made our visit wonderful, as my husband had just returned severely wounded from Iraq. Pros: ROMANTIC, SECLUDED, LOVED IT more

User review by addictedtosushi 5/8/2005

I had a wonderful time with my awesome co-workers at this delightful hideaway. I highly recommend the waiter's special. I ordered it with the lemon herb dressing and it was a nice change to the palate. Sharing the appetizers is a nice thing to do, which was not frowned on one bit. The grey moss oysters had a marvelous flavor. Our server was very informative on what The Grey Moss had to offer. Dessert was a must so I indulged in Grand Marnier mixed into ice cream with strawberries and a Kona coffee. We had a wonderful time and will return for dinner next time. Reservations are a must but not hard to obtain early in the day. Pros: ample parking, fast service, secluded more

terrible waste of money and time 9/12/2004

the ambiance was excellent - and now i know why - the restaurant was empty on a friday evening. the food was absolutely disgusting - we went to sonic afterwards and grabbed a burger. the appetizer (sauteed mushrooms) was raw and steak was bland at best. had heard such good things about gmi, but must have gone very downhill recently because i will never return here. can spend as much at ruth chris and much better food. Pros: good ambiance Cons: , poor service, bland steak/bad food more

Overrated 10/1/2003

Overrated. The appetizers where a slice of white bread rolled up and baked. The service was slow when they finally took our order. And, the tables were too close together. I barely had room to sit down, and we couldn't carry on a conversation without the people around us hearing every word. The atmosphere might be better if you sit outside, but it wouldn't help the food or service. more

Retired 8/21/2003

I was in a party of six and my prime rib was the worst piece of meat :that I have ever been served. One other person in our group had to order a different steak , it was cooked wrong. When this was brought to the attention of the waiter and manager ; so! This was a special night for one couple, 60th Anniversary. Over priced, Bad food,Sorry service!!! more

Romantic?? My @$$ 2/19/2003

I can't believe this is considered a romantic restaurant! Except for the secluded setting and stone architecture, we may as well have been at Dick's on a Friday night. The tables are packed in so that the people are on top of one another. And the noise! I couldn't hear my wife sitting across from me. We were there on Feb 15th, and were told the night before was even more crowded. And at $40 dollars an entre, charging $3.50 to exchange a potato for four spears of asparagus is ridiculous (the waiter made no effort to accomodate us, either). Apparently, they have the meals prepared in advance, and they have to prepare a fresh one if you deviate even slightly from the menu. The food was decent, but the portions relatively small. There are plenty of places in town that serve better meals, are more romantic, and better priced. Cons: Crowded, Noisy, Overpriced more

Nice 1/16/2003

For most people it is a bit of a drive to get there, and being "remote" it is a little hard to find when it is dark. Although it was very nice, the expense was greater than how nice it was. Just as good a time can be had elsewhere for less money. more

ethereal atmosphere 1/13/2003

I remember the place from childhood and now think of it as the most romantic dining anywhere more
