After reading, from another reviewer, that this restaurant has recently become newly owned/operated, it may explain the poor experience we had last time we dined at Taverna Plaka. We are always on the search for new, authentic Greek food and have usually been pleased with Taverna Plaka for the past several years. We always take friends/family there, and typically stick to the meze. The service has always been slighty below average, but we overlooked it because of the food quality and fun atmosphere. However, on our last visit in Jan 09, the service and poor quality/value of food served was hard to overlook. Plaka is a great place for large parties on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, they don't value the patronage of tables under five, and it can turn into a long, frustrating and dissatisfying dining experience. The last time we went the meze portions were minuscule, cold and flavorless. We had to ask several times for the complimentary hummus and bread that is customarily given as soon as your are seated. Drinks were never refilled. Some of the meze we ordered never even came out. Overall, it was a complete let down after years of good food and fun times at Plaka. I realize businesses are hurting from the current economic climate and recession, but this one obvsiously was not. It's extremely poor business to compromise quality and portions, but still charge customers the same amount. If we do decide to go back, it will be a very long time.....
Pros: some redeeming meze still, good atmosphere
Cons: service, declining value/portions
