SO...Surprised someone hasn't posted a review for Taverna Plaka in awhile...this place is awesome- took a date here and it was really good food (you make the hummus at the table!)...

Worst

In reading the 2009 review a light bulb went off. Change of ownership!! Ah Hah! Finally an explanation. While the menu is the same, the portions and quality are not. As onl...

Still no Good Greek Restaraunts in Town 6/6/2005

While the Taverna has a "fun" atmosphere, it's more of a club than a restaurant. The problem comes when they try to merge the two. What you get is no available seats, poor and unwelcoming service, and the food is sub-par. Reservations don't mean anything, and you wait an additional 1.5 hours at the bar. People waiting at the tables for service are constantly appealing to the manager, who appeases those complaining by buying shots. The food sounds far better on the menu than it tastes, and greek basics are made poorly. Late night (inevetable given the pace of service) the place is literally converted into a club, and the music goes to insane volumes (people are stuffing napkins in their ears). Pros: Party Atmosphere, A Greek Rest. in ATL, Diverse Crowd Cons: Poor Service, Less than Par Food, VERY Crowded, Loud more

Don't listen to the bad reviews! 5/16/2005

Plaka's fame is for after 11, when the front room is alive w/ folks from all over. music is a mix from the Middle East, India, Greece, & Latin America.back room is Latin music mixed w/ Brazilian & house.I love the place b/c the atmosphere is so non-american.People dont come here to get trashed & hook up like they do at american clubs. Here the mindset is to be with friends, blow off some steam after a long work week, etc. different mentality, atmosphere, & mindset...& a different kind of fun!If you want to bring 20 of your friends & have this great dining experience, then come at like 6 pm on Fri/Sat or on a weekday.Request the back room. youll get more than decent service & the food will be pretty good. The food isnt great but i really dont think it was meant to be. more

Skip it! 4/11/2005

Went to Taverna for the beginning of my friend's bachelorette party. I was HIGHLY disappointed with this place. Maybe it was that my expectations were set high by a friend that had recommended it, but whatever it was, I will never go back nor tell anyone to try it out. My reservation was made well in advance and we were not seated until about an hour after the reservation. We were seated in the outdoor area, in a corner where we could not even try to enjoy the atmosphere. The belly dancers were too skinny and had nothing to shake. We saw our server maybe once or twice and when she finally got around to it, she brought out mediocre food that we all half-finished. There are much better places in Atlanta to celebrate-I wanted this to be a great spot but, it just ain't. Cons: bad parking, poor service, poor food more

AVOID if you value your time and palate 10/14/2004

Ear-splitting music played in an atmosphere-less room paired with really bad food and gratuitous bell-dancing? Yuck. A complete waste of time. My date and I left after the grisly and greasy sausage appetizer. There are so many other great restaurants in Atlanta to choose from. Avoid this one. Cons: , awful service/mgr more

Not worth your time 9/12/2004

Taverna Plaka had come highly recommended and was a great disappointment. The food is average, the atmosphere bland, and the service staff awful. They sell the restaurant with the fun funky atmosphere but they kick you out to refill your seats with more customers the second you pay the bill. For a welcoming and fun environment with great food try Istanbul Cafe, it's great!! Cons: , management, environment more

Lively and Greek 7/12/2004

I went to Taverna Plaka with about 25 highschool friends one night. Reservations went smoothely and we were promptly seated. The atmosphere is lively, featuring belly dancers and Greek versions of current American pop music. While it can seem a little tacky at first, it's still fun. The food was great and before long, all 25 of us were up dancing on tables. Pros: Fun atmosphere, Good food, Strong tables more

Opa! 5/9/2004

This place is great. Reviews I had read are wrong about the food. THe food was amazing and such a great value. The belly dancers and wait staff were quite entertaining. This is a perfect place for a group outing. Pros: great food, great value, entertaining more

Poor Management/Service 2/9/2004

Never before have I seen such poor management and customer service. We were told our wait would be 1.5 hours. After 2 hours we started to question the staff. When speaking to a manager he informed us that he lies to patrons to get them to stay and that we also would not be in the area we had requested. He had no respect for our business and executed poor management style. Pros: Entertainment Cons: , Management, Space more

Terrible 2/1/2004

DO NOT EAT HERE! SAVE YOUR $$! This is one of the cheesiest restaurants in town. Skanky belly dancers dancing to 90's pop music with people tipping them $ bills like they were strippers? C'mon, I know the restaurant is on Cheshire Bridge, but I thought it was completely tasteless. The food is nothing special if you've eaten Greek food before. Whatever you do do not order the family style. It's the biggest rip off in town. $25 bucks a head. We had a party of 6 and the bill came to $275 and each of us only had 1 drink! I'm certain the only reason it does half as well as it does is b/c they don't have any competition. more

One of a Kind 11/11/2003

Who'd a thought a Greek place on Cheshire would ever have 2 hour waits on a Saturday? But step inside and you'll see why - it's a big party with funky takes on traditional music, mass napkin drops from the ceiling and a great energy and vibe. The best part is, with all this, the food still stacks up. Had a delicious meal featuring lamb and chicken and other goodies. Service was blah (but you don't really notice) and the wait time is enough to turn you away, but should you get in, you oughtta love it. Opa, indeed. Pros: Food, atmosphere, table-top dancing Cons: Wait, wait, wait more
