One of the Nicest Restaurants on the Boardwalk...\r I think the Owners are French...& that's why it's so Good...\r recommended by our Host at Villa Sinclair, Sugar Reef is a wonderful place to have Lunch or dinner directly on the Boardwalk & enjoy the view of the Beach, the Ocean & People watching... Service is excellent like the food & the price are very reasonable...\r \r \r We Love Hollywood Beach...We will be back next winter... more

Despite hearing about one of our friends getting food poisoning there a few years ago, we gave Sugar Reef the benefit of the doubt and went there figuring the chef had been fired and the quality had improved. That night my husband, myself and our 4 year old son were all almost admitted to the hospital because of food poisoning. I was horrified. I suppose it was our own fault but on top of being sick for 3 days and having to miss work, the bill was outrageous for poor quality seafood which I am sure was frozen. The service is snooty and an 18% gratuity is included in the bill regardless if you were satisfied with the service or not. so all in all, bad food, bad service, the owners who are there most of the time are extremely snooty and uninterested in their customers. I would have been better off getting a slice of pizza a few doors down with the same beach view.\r \r beware of hyped ratings of this place, its not all that it is cracked up to be. more

Sugar Reef is way over rated, I went because of the view and that was about the only redeeming thing about the entire $400 bill with 18% gratuity included in the bill, so if the service was horrible which I must say it was, you have to tip anyway . The food was WAY off, they say tropical french and I think the chef got drunk and spilled a whole container of jerk seasoning in every dish we had. I would just assume bring a lovely picnic and sit in the sand with the same view, I am 100% positive I would eat better!\r \r Dont waste your money, its stuck up, terribly over rated food and to be honest, a little run down as far as an establishment goes. more

This place is a menace to the beach, they go out of their way to harass other local restaurants near them. I know people who have worked there and say they were not treated well. Hollywood's locals support restaurants that are easy going and fun and are there to enjoy the beach with friends, family, and good music! more

After much debating on where to eat one night our concierge at The Westin Diplomat recommended this place. We wanted fresh seafood someplace on the beach. After a short trolley ride to the boardwalk and a short 5 minute walk to the restaurant we arrived. The place is small and cozy with a few tables outside along the boardwalk which we would have taken had it not been for the brief downpour that arrived shortly before we did. Our concierge had made us a reservation for 4 (2-adults + 2-children). The table they had reserved for us was the typical in the back of an empty house table I am now used to receiving when dining with children. However me being me did not take the first offer and decided to let the host know where I wanted to sit which was right by the window with lovely ocean views. \r We started our meal off with a couple of glasses of ice cold Pinot Grigio and placed an appetizer order of the spicy blackened scallops which was absolutely amazing! For our mains we ordered the grilled Mahi Mahi and for the kids off the kids menu the skirt steak served medium (very nice). the Mahi was nice and fresh and unless you used the small amount of fresh salsa that accompanied it a bit bland (but still good). The total for the 4 of us was $142.00 (18% gratuity included on all bills) - steep yes. Would I visit again? Yes. \r \r The view - Priceless! more

The Scenery right on the Hollywood Boardwalk is epic. It is great, especially watching the light of day fade away and the moon and clouds appear.\r \r The service was bad, not because of the servers but because they only had 2 servers seating a lot of tables. Towards the end of the meal, they were exhausted and could not seat new customers.\r \r One couple got up and walked away. \r \r The food wasn't good. I had the rack of lamb and it was over cooked and dry and a much smaller portion than they charged.\r \r Also, they have mandatory tipping 18% so there is no real incentive to serve you.\r \r This place was recommended highly but I found it disappointing and will do my best to never eat there again.\r \r Just not a good experience and definitely not a place I recommend to anyone. more

Outstanding. Go. Now. Get the steamed mussels with green curry and coconut milk appetizer. Wow. I had their Ahi Tuna for dinner, just seared. Very fresh. I highly recommend. Note: if you are looking for crab or lobster call first to see if they have it first. more

Have been here numerous times and it is always good food. On a nice day it is a geat place to eat outside on the boardwalk. Beware they charge 18% gratuity on all bills. It says to help their "international Customers" What the heck does that mean? Cheap Europeans? Cheap Canadians? Not sure. Happy eats. Cheers. more

What great wait staff, "nous parlons Francais!" One of the only table linen restaurants on the strip. Nice presentations for everything. We had the avocado shrimp and bacon salad, which was a fine combination. Also, the spicy scallops and cucumber with mango salsa. These little piles of happiness were politely potent. Roasted duck with mango salsa was quite good. The mashed potatoes with carrots and purple potatoes were very nice. I was not satisfied with the seafood pasta. Red sauce was thin, and there was a suspicion of it being from a can. The salmon was oddly present, but no white fish, and it was fishy tasting. One rubber band that resembled calamari (and 3 heads), one over done scallop, and two muscles that were not good at all. \r \r It was late in the evening, and we'll go again. If only for the duck and to try the bacon creme brulee. I would venture to guess that most of the accouterments to the dishes are retail bought, like their loaves of bread, so that should be reflected in their proud prices.\r \r Watch out for the auto gratuity. more

Wildly excessive markups on the wine 9/3/2008

Even though we have never been that impressed with Sugar Reef, we have eaten there a number of times because we live within walking distance. Last weekend we tried it again. It was a very warm night and once again, their air conditioner was underperforming. Every time someone opens the door the entire restaurant is flooded with warm humid air. Appetizers and entrees were not bad, but not remarkable by any stretch. I ordered a bottle of wine that I am familiar with - I had that same day bought a bottle at Total Wine for $11.50 - and understood from the start that I was getting ripped off because the restaurant price was $38.00. What irritated me though was later finding out that an 18% gratuity was automatically added to our bill. In other words, the $11.50 bottle of wine cost us $45.00. I understand restaurant markups of course, but that is a bit much. Won't be back. Pros: location more

best place on the boardwalk 2/18/2007

i had the true pleasure of dining at sugar reef for my birthday at the end of january..the food was outstanding. It was not a very busy evening,we had no reservation, that was not a problem. we were seated right away..the waitress was polite, pleasant, and knowledgeable. the food was marvelous.prepared to the precise specifications. my husband likes his steak VERY RARE, and I had the herb crusted grouper and I asked the waitress to suggest a wine for me. she suggested a bordeaux that was perfect., along with beautiful presentation and amazing flavors it was an evening and meal that i will never forget. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great food , great service, spectacular view and an evening to remember. when next i go to south Florida I intend to return to sugar reef for another memorable evening Pros: great food, great staff, appropriately priced, pleasant ambience more

Beer Taste on a Champagne Budget 1/9/2005

You know, I really don't mind occasionally dropping 180 dollars on a good dinner for two, but when I do so, I expect that the bread is not pre-sliced, almost stale, so-so, store-bought kind like you find in Winn Dixie. I expect that there aren't boxes of bottled water, cooking supplies and other kitchen necessities lined up to the side of the dinning area. I expect the waitresses to know how to pour a bottle of wine. I expect.... The bottom line is that the food was good, the ambiance was poor (at best) and the price was out to lunch. My impression is that this place is basically an upscale oceanside seafood shack that put a french twist on everything and decided to charge an arm and a leg. I may be inclined to try it again during a ""regular"" night, but definately not again during a ""special"" night. Pros: Desert, Main Course Cons: , Ambiance more
