Best

Spencer's is the only outstanding steakhouse in Salt Lake City!!!!! The steaks are USDA PRIME from the stockyards of Chicago, the marbling and tenderness of the meat is excellent....

Worst

I have been there twice, once a couple years ago and then last night. Now I remember why. Very Very Very SLOOOOOOOW service, I am not in having a meal in less than an hour as I e...

What a Joke 12/31/2011

What a Joke. Over priced food, rude waiter and uppity hostess. We had reservations for 8 pm for six people and arrived a few minutes early, but one couple had to cancel. They said they could only seat us at corner booth, now. Cramped. I ordered Halibut. Took forever to get there (they were really cooking it). It was over cooked, almost charred on the bottom and required a forceful knife stroke the cut through (almost breaking the plate). Overall not a pleasant experience. I guess we weren't the privileged class, should have worn a tux. I will NOT again. more

Not a family friendly restaurant! 9/2/2011

We participated in a group celebration at Spencer's. It was a nightmare. The service did not arrive for at least 40 minutes after our orders were taken, despite our specifc request that the children be fed immediately. The staff only expediated the meals service following an altercation where another diner complained of the noise level and activity of the hungry, bored children attending the meal. At that point, the manager, after first taking care of his priority customer (clearly not us), stepped in and assigned another server to our room. Once received the food was extremely disappointing, over salted and over priced. This is not a family friendly place to celebrate. Go somewhere else! more

What happened? 12/6/2010

I use to eat at Spencers on a regular basis a couple of years ago and I always remeber the food being excellent. However I ate there last weekend and it was HORRIBLE... When our steaks first came out, they were cold, as well as the side dishes. Once we cut into the steak they were under cooked, so we had to ask the waiter to take them back and have them cooked a little longer (something I NEVER do!) When the steaks finally did come back out, close to 20 min later the steaks were cooked right, but were cold. I am not sure what happend to one of the best steakhouses in SLC, but I have to say I dont think I will be returning anytime soon>> more

A really great steakhouse 11/4/2008

Spencer's is the only outstanding steakhouse in Salt Lake City!!!!! The steaks are USDA PRIME from the stockyards of Chicago, the marbling and tenderness of the meat is excellent. The only steaks to get there are the BONE-IN steaks. The only server to get there is kevin B.. he is terrific he knows everything there is to know about the menu and exactly what to order. The wine list is the best in Salt Lake and the wine glasses are crystal. Jerry is a nationally known bartender who will give you the best suggestion for an after dinner drink. If you want to treat yourself right then go to Spencer's get a drink from jerry, request kevin B. as your server, order a bottle of wine from Louie, and indulge in the chocolate naughty cake. Best time ever in Salt Lake!!!!!!!! Pros: BEST BARTENDER JERRY, BEST SERVER KEVIN B, BEST BONE-IN STEAKS. Cons: ITS A PRETTY PENNY BUT WORTH EVERYONE! more

One of the top 3 steak houses in the country 7/21/2008

I have eaten at great steak restaurants across the USA and internationally. I would rank Spencer's in SLC in my top three picks in this area every time. I almost always do the shrimp or crab for starters and it is always fresh and has a nice clean taste to it. The Kansas City cut is my favorite steak on the menu, the sides are delicious (you cannot go wrong with any of the potato dishes, and steak tomatoes are a must if you like a nice fresh side with your steak). Servers are professional and very nice. If you are new to the restaurant they will take the time to walk you though the menu, and even though I have only been there 1/2 dozen times in the last two years I am always thanked for eating there again when I arrive. The bar and drinks are average. Pros: Great cuts of meat, a nice relaxed dining experience more

way over priced 6/21/2008

not worth it. fire up a n.y. strip on your own grill . the steaks are o.k. but the prices are ridciulous for what you get. Cons: price, service, pretentioness more

Meat OK for the price, well prepared, dining experience weird 10/12/2007

Dined 10-12-07 had a reservation for the early hour of 6 PM. as mentioned before the reception person after finding our reservation, ignored us (we were the only ones there), chatted with another waitperson until I loudly said that we were going to Ruth's Crist. Then a manager type hurried over and gave the usual spiel--best steakhouse etc. Then we were seated and the ensuing wait service was excellent. Ordered Caeser salad--was not a CS --requested anchovies on it--anchovies gritty and gristly from sitng in the open too long. Appetizer very good. We ordered NY strip and Filet mignon. Waiter inquired if we wanted crab and lobster on it! We split two half veggies even then the portions were huge. Meat was cooked in a device at maybe 1000 degrees leaving surface ""caramelized""--a bit like a large Baby Ruth, However degree of done-ness was right on and the flavorwas superb. Will sample other steakhouses in SLC before we try again. Pros: good tasty steak Cons: cannot decide if it is a restaurent or the Hilton Cofee Shop more

Expensive and Under-Managed 10/5/2007

I expect decent service, good food and a little ambience for $100 for dinner for two. What did I get at Spencer's? Bad attitude from the arrogant manager, Nick, a crappy table, and poorly prepared food. If you're going to charge what these guys do, you'd better back it up with something more than expensive prices. Fleming's was much better than this and even Ruth's Chris is a better option than Spencer's when you want to spend some serious money on dinner. Pros: Nice wood trim Cons: Bad Manager & Expensive Food more

Fantastic 7/14/2007

From the stuffed Portobello appetizer to the most flavorful ribeye, through to the apple pie it was a great experience and I highly recommend, although not for the penny-pincher. Pros: service, winelist and of course the Prime beef Cons: small cocktails more

Horrible!!! 6/29/2007

I just had dinner at spencers with my spouse expecting it to be the best in SLC. As we walked in to be seated, the hostesses were goofing off and flirting with some guy, so we had to wait until they were finished before they seated us. Next our waiter came and talked too much about how broiling the steak is better than grilling, and what great quality their steak is. We ordered the shrimp and oysters to start out, the shimp was terrible. Once we made our dinner choices, our waiter had to correct us not to order the prime rib because the use only choice grade meat. So we took his advice and ordered the NY strip, and a ribeye. The Steaks were VERY AVERAGE, absolutely nothing special here. We also ordered The cheese hash, and asparagus for sides, also nothing special at all. We then asked for a dessert menu and were told we needed to wait, they'd tell us about the dessert menu once they had a chance, we waited about 10 minutes. That was when we asked for our bill. The service at Spencer's was So terrible we just wanted out of there. This was the worst steakhouse we had ever been too. The past couple of nights we've dined at Bambara, and Ruth's Chris in SLC, Both with Outstanding service, and great food. We left Spencer's VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! more

Excellent quality every time 12/10/2006

I have enjoyed many trips to Spencers over the last few years with friends and family and would whole heartedly recommend any steak lover to give the restaurant an evening of their time. I am quite surprised by some of the other negative reviews here, every meal at Spencers has been a wonderful experience for myself. Pros: Steak, service, ambience Cons: Touch pricey more

Overhyped 6/30/2006

I first heard about Spencer's in an in-flight magazine on Delta where the Salt Lake location was rated in the top ten in the nation. I gave it a try and was extremely surprised by how underwhelmed I was. It made much sense later when I discovered the ""top ten"" list was simply an advertisement the companies paid to be on. This made me feel much better about life. If you want to go somewhere and impress whoever you're with about the amount of money you're spending I would recommend Spencer's, if you want them to be impressed with the food then don't go anywhere near Spencer's. The meat is certified Prime but oddly lacks any flavor, could they be cheating and not using the beef they claim to? I highly doubt it, but then again I wouldn't think anyone would pay to be listed on a top ten list either. Pros: Attentive Service Cons: Overpriced, Prime Steaks lack flavor more

Simply Superb Food! 3/5/2006

A little expensive, especially for a restaurant in a hotel, but worth it! Pros: Steak, Steak, Steak Cons: Prices, Hotel Restaurant more

Best Meal Ever! 12/13/2005

My husband and I went to Spencer's last night for our 1 year anniversary and we were blown away. The food was fantastic and the service was great! Some of the reviews on here said that the service was slow and though we were there for two hours we did not think so. We liked the fact that they didn't rush us. Usually you will get your appitzer and hardly have time to start eating it before they give you your salad and your meal is always fast on it's heals you never get time to enjoy anything but not Spencer's we had lots of time to just enjoy our entire meal. The steak is to die for and the creme brulee is awesome! It is a little pricey but it was well worth it. We plan on making Spencer's a regular. Pros: steak, romantic, everything Cons: not a single thing more

Romantic Steakhouse 11/28/2005

The crabcake and the oyster appetizers are awesome! Then of course, the steak, i had the porterhouse cut, and it was just delicious! so tender and juicy, cooked just right. even the warm bread and butter they start you out with is good! dessert-- i would suggest the strawberry shortcake~~ yummm! loved it! Pros: good parking, quiet, romantic Cons: liquor membership? more

great food &service 7/18/2005

Excelletn meal, service.Wine was incredible. Wonderful and a very well run restaurant more

What happened 6/29/2005

My last three trips have been very dissapointing. Average steak, bad service, slow service and warm white wine in a warm stone wine chiller. No ones paying attention in here any more. more

nans 8/13/2004

Spencer's is, by far, the best steakhouse I have eaten at. The atmosphere is wonderful, the steak is perfect, and the martinis are AWESOME! Be ready to reach deep in the checkbook but it's worth every penny! The service isn't overbearing but they don't ignore you either. A great place for a special date or anniversary dinner. If you stay the night at the Hilton there is no private club membership fee. Pros: Atmosphere, Food , Drinks more

Not worth it 11/8/2003

I have been there twice, once a couple years ago and then last night. Now I remember why. Very Very Very SLOOOOOOOW service, I am not in having a meal in less than an hour as I enjoy food, but it took 30 minutes to get our appetizers then and only then our waiter took our food order we had been done with the appetizers for 50 minutes when the main entree came to the table. The food is ok but how can you go wrong with grilling a steak as long as you have the right meat. the side order are jokes your local food chain does a better job. The appetizers were good. All in all not worth the extravagantly priced menu. May be see you in a couple years when I will have forgotten my unpleasurable meal. Sincerely Cons: very slow, expensive, unpersonal more
