Best

Great selection of fresh product and perfectly executed dishes.

Worst

Yes, it is in Beverly Hills, and you see celebrities, but you'd better have three hours to spare for lunch. The food looks real elegant, but the taste is average. And the waiters ...

Great service~ 3/17/2006

Our waiter provided exceptional service. The food was so-so, but I guess things have changed since Ashton bought it out. The prices weren't that high. The menu seems to be very limited...There were probably about 5 entrees to choose from...and the same number of appetizers. I tried the strawberry pancake dessert and it was orgasmic. If it was not for the dessert, I don't know if I would go back again. Pros: Service, Wine list, Dessert more

Reputation is better than reality 11/6/2005

We went for a Sunday night dinner and had a fine experience. What prevented it from being excellent: waiting 10 minutes to be seated (after arriving on time for our reservation), bad 1980s decor, and high noise level. The first and main courses all around the table were good and presented beautifully, although not exceptional for the price. The desserts were far and away the best part of dinner; I had a brulee with apricots and persian berries that was AMAZING, and the others had chocolate something-or-others that looked quite good. I might ask to be seated on the patio next time... Pros: Desserts, Presentation of food Cons: Atmosphere, Noise level more

ok-but not to die for 10/19/2005

The much praised ambiance of spago is overrated. I found the building to be barnlike, small, and the main dining room dark and average at best. I had the liver and onion with bacon, I liked the crisp onions and the liver was good but I have had better. The dessert was creatively served and assembled french style, but nothing special. The wine list is extensive and expensive. The waitstaff was attentive. There is $125 caviar, but overall it wasn't very expensive and not much different compared to other restaurants. I went to Spago recently and had the sea bass it was $35 for a 3 inch piece of fish flanked by tiny pieces of shrimp and clams. The $16 dessert was also a 3 inch piece of chocolate cake. I guess they are trying to save money. Pros: good food, good service, great breads tryemall Cons: small portions, see through kitchen, expensive dessert more

Heaven for a Sweet Tooth 10/7/2005

The restaurant is great, and it's always nice to be treated like royalty when you walk in to Spago. But the reason I make reservations: DESSERT!! The pastry chefs at this restaurant know what they're doing. Order any of the desserts and your tastebuds wil jump for joy. They may be a little on the expensive side, but if you have a sweet tooth, your mouth will thank you afterwards. Pros: Dessert, Service Cons: Pricey more

Horrible service 10/2/2005

We were very excited to be enjoying lunch at Spago. Our food, particularly dessert, was delicious. However, after being seated, we that for about 15 minutes before our server came over and presented us with some menus. We were never given a drink menu/wine list and were never even asked if we would like something to drink (other than water). Our server never came by to ask if the food was alright or if we needed anything else. We actually had to flag down our server to get a dessert menu (and were met with a pissed off look when we asked for one). The service (I suppose I should say lack of service) ruined our Spago experience. We walked away very disappointed. Pros: Great food Cons: Poor service more

Best Tasting Menu in LA 8/24/2005

My wife and I have tried quite a few different restaurant's tasting menus, but we haven't found one that beats Spago's. Each dish was fantastic (6 courses, but about 10 different servings really). Selecting the wine pairing is well worth the extra $50 and Spago is exceedingly generous with their wines (compared to other places). Service is impeccable, not overbearing but attentive. Highly recommended! Pros: Food, Service Cons: Price more

Not elegant, but FINE dining 7/14/2005

I visited Spago about two weeks ago for an anniversary. It was my first time there, and I expected a very stuffy, formal atmosphere. That was not the case. Our waiter was friendly without being intrusive. We shared one their ""famous"" smoked salmon pizzas, but I wouldnt get it again. The sushi plate was excellent, if a little small. I got fish, and my wife got duck. Both were marvelous. Service was great. Definetly would go back, but it's too expensive for the everyday experience. Pros: Service, Wine Cons: Decor, Expensive more

Go for lunch 3/3/2005

I've been there for lunch and dinner, and there is a remarkable difference in the quality of service and food. I was very disapointed during a recent dinner since it appears the abundance of patrons makes them hurry their preparation and care of the food. Also, the service is spotty at night since the staff is stretched thin. Lunch though is a different experience, and though its still not cheap by any means, the experience comes much closer to what you should get for your money. I recommend the lobster cobb salad and all of their deserts are perfectly executed. Pros: atmosphere, bread basket Cons: price more

Good Food 3/1/2005

The food here is good, but to me it was not as good as I had expected it to be. For anyone who might be a vegetarian out there, this place has not one main course that does not have meat or fish in it. The food is by no means bad, just not what I had expected it to be. The wait staff treats you well, and it is a very trendy spot to be seen in, if thats what you want! Pros: Valet Parking Cons: expensive more

Don't go to Spago 2/11/2005

I can't believe how disappointing this place has gotten?! Maybe I'm dwelling on the glory days of yore. Went for 9pm reservation on Wed night. Waitress tells us they are out of two appetizers the only two my friend wanted (I was taking her out for a celebration dinner). Waitress seemed unconcerned. Wine list by the glass is pathetic. We both had different fish dishes. Mine was with black truffles, but I needed to ask for a magnifying glass to see the truffles. My friend's was oily and fried, wasn't described as fried on the menu. Dessert was disappointing. Scene was disappointing. Was like being in a Friday's. People poorly dressed. Seems like the whole place has taken a step down to ""Wolfgang Puck Cafe"" but kept the Spago prices. I won't be back. Cons: Prices, Food Quality more

Not for vegetarians 1/14/2005

I took my husband there for his birthday. They had zero main entrees for vegetarians, and 3 appetizers and 1 soup for vegetarians. I hate mushrooms so asked if they had something other than the $45 french truffles (a kind of mushroom) on pasta. I asked if they could make pasta primavera with penne and she said they didn't have any but she could have them use agnoletti (something that looks like the pasta used for ravioli). What do I end up with? The french truffles that I didn't want (as I mentioned above I hate mushrooms) and no vegetables. When my husband complained that I hadn't received what I had requested, she didn't seem apologetic. We at least expected that the desserts would be their saving grace. The milk chocolate twirl seemed like it had been chopped off unceremoniously, and the cake tasted like something out of Safeway. Cons: , unhospitable, bad desserts more

very good 11/1/2004

If you like foie gras, you must get their foie gras appetizer...it's the best i've ever had. Their soup is also amazing. The main course is average (I had veal once and steak once). The dessert is really good too. It's a must-go for your special occasions. Will go back again for sure Pros: foie gras, soup, dessert Cons: , noisy, crowded more

Spago's Solid- Not Great 9/25/2004

The atmosphere and waitstaff at Spago are, in my opinion, it's stand out feature. Really nice servers ready to assist and the decor is great. The food is simply overrated at Spago. It's good, but not that good. If you're going out for an expensive restaurant, try Sona or Ciudad- better menus and better food. Pros: Food's average, Nice waitstaff, Appealing decor more

Not What I Expected 5/28/2004

Either the food here is too high class for me or I am too low brow for Spago. If you like things like tuna tartar and caviar, you will love this place. The food was good but not what I expected from ""World Famous"" Wolfgang Puck (who walks around greeting everyone). The service is really great, the wait staff was constantly replenishing bread and beverages. Pros: Great Service, Good Food more

LA's Flagship 5/24/2004

To all the people that say Spago is overrated, only come here if you have sophisticed tastebuds. The sweet corn agnolotti was one of the best pasta dishes I have had, very tender and creamy. Foie gras four ways was great. And they make this amazing whipped potato and cheese side to the cote du boeuf. I'm assuming these inexperienced peasants just ordered the chicken or whatever sounded safe. Pros: Food, Service, It's Spago more

Good life experience 4/21/2004

i have been there in the evening time because it was my friend birthday. romatic place, good service, beautiful stylish presetation, and taste good...so of course it is not cheap....but it is really good of food experience to cost some ""tution fee"" oh...by the way....i also saw Puck walking around in his restaurant.... Pros: everything is good more

Okay to try 1/1/2004

I was expecting a bit more since it's renowned...but it was just average to my group and me. Although, it wasn't disappointing, either...the appetizers and main course were moderately good, but each took a fair amount of time getting to us. It was a weeknight, and the crowd was an adequate size, so there was no reason for the hold up. Wolfgang was there that night, and came around to our table for polite small talk. Service from the staff, however, could have been better. It is a place to go to at least once, so you can say you've been. more

Not All That 9/18/2003

Had lunch with my co-workers today, and was a bit disappointed. I've eaten in a lot of good restaurants in LA, but never got around to trying Spago as I thought it was all hype-and it was. The only reason we ate there was it was right in front of the bldg. we had a meeting in. My sashimi was a bit bland, and 4 a super small serving, cost me $30. The only good thing we got was service really as our server was extra attentive and kept replenishing bread and drinks. Go once, just for experience. Pros: Excellent Service Cons: Food lacks flavor, Expensive Appetizers more

divine 7/23/2003

I am not sure why there are so many bad reviews. I am Los Angeleno and of all the restaurants I have ever been to, they have served me the most interesting food. If you go, please splurge and get the 95/person Chef's tasting menu. I thought that service was good..they were good at refilling drinks, bread, bringing food, changing plates and utensils. Sometimes they were a tad slow. The atmosphere of the courtyard was splendid. My favorite dish was the grilled albacore, crab cake and roasted squab. All their dishes were inventive and unique Pros: vibrant food, courtyard, near parking meters Cons: touristy crowd more

Uppity Dennys 5/12/2003

I'm not sure what the draw is here. The food was good, sure, but it was far from memorable. The service was awful; it took 30 minutes to get out of there after we finished the meal. The atmosphere is awful; the place is loud, crowded and looks like reasonably well-decorated Dennys. Go there so you can say you've been, but trust me, you won't feel like going back. Pros: Above average food, Large wine list Cons: Crowded, Awful service, No atmosphere more
