My sister was originally referred by an extremely high end boutique and I assumed these flawless tailors would exceed my budget. Am absolutely astonished by the quality of the work, I challenge you to find any one of comparable expertise. Wager it's not possible. And even more amazing their prices are below the market. I have lived in NYC for 12 years and have been a bridesmaid more times than I would like. For the latest wedding, I had a dress that was 2 sizes too big and impossible to tailor, but Irina and her team are amazing and miracle workers. Not only did they create a great dress but they did it super quick. The entire team and staff is extremely friendly and they really know what they are doing. I am coming back here for everything, even if it's a simple hem on my jeans. more

About 8 years ago I purchased and Armani couture silk and heavily beaded skirt which was in need of repair. It was so heavy with beading, sequins, pearls and Swarovski crystals that it weighed on the waistband to the point of shredding the edges. But, alas, I loved the skirt and put it away for future use. My daughter became engaged and the wedding was coming up. What to wear? So out came the skirt, still in disrepair. I brought it to the LOVELY people at Silhouettes and Profiles, not sure that they would be able to fix it. The response when I inquired as to whether it was possible to resurrect this vintage piece was, ""Anything is possible, we have our tricks!"" So I left the skirt there for 3 weeks and drove in from Connecticut to pick it up. I have to admit I was a bit anxious, as I wasn't so sure it was possible to be fixed. In fact, they did a REMARKABLE job! I was (and am) still in awe of the workmanship involved in putting the skirt back together. I WILL be wearing this skirt to my daughter's wedding and they will be getting a photo of me wearing it to post in their showroom. As far as I am concerned this is the BEST place in the world to have tailoring done. more

With a crazy schedule and as a huge procrastinator, I delayed on taking my bridesmaid's dress in to get tailored for my cousins wedding on June 6th. I ordered it online from jcrew at the 10th hour and unfortuntately the only size they had left was one size too small. I kept telling myself that I would manage to lose a few pounds to fit into the green silk dress, but with two wks to the wedding, I knew i had to take it in to get tailored. The funny thing is the dress does fit (I am a size four from the midsection down, but it would not zipper around my chest as I am a 34D). My friend had recommended that I go to Silhouettes and Profiles. Upon entering the tailor, I was immediately welcomed by friendly women and instructed to try on the dress. Low and behold, this was not an easy job. since there is no extra cloth at the zipper, they had to remove the silk from the back of the dress and essentially remake the dress in order to make this work. With less than two weeks for the job, I wasn't sure if this was possible... BUT went in for the fitting one week later and these women are miracle workers. No other tailor in teh city would have taken on this job and finished it so seamlessly (no pun intended) as they did; so that the dress fit like a glove and there were no obvious ""scars"" on the dress. These women work MAGIC! I will definitely be going back to them for future dress fitttings. Thank you so much Silhouettes & Profiles!!! Do not know what I would have done without you! more

I went to Silhouettes and Profiles to have my wedding dress tailored. I had a very difficult dress (with many layers) and every other tailor was quoting really high prices for the work. I bought the dress at a sample sale and couldn't afford paying alot for the tailoring. \r \r Silhouettes were the best priced I could find and the work never suffered from the low cost. They did an amazing job!! \r \r When I didn't like any of the typical bustle looks they made me a custom bustle at no extra charge. \r \r I will be going back here for all tailoring that I need! I highly reccomend them. more

I had a bridesmaid's dress for my sister's wedding that was a disaster--the bust was too small making my cleavage look pornographic, the lining around the hips was too tight, and the length was more than 8 inches too long. Worse, I needed the dress to be fixed in only 3 days. After a quick review of my situation, the ladies of Silouettes & Profiles fixed my dress perfectly and almost instantly. I was so anxious when I took the dress in, and now that I have the final result, I feel like the world's loveliest maid of honor and worthy of my sister's special day. I was looking for a dressmaker to do alterations on my beautiful Christos wedding gown. I am new to the city, so had to ask around to find a reliable place, but nothing reasonable and conveniently turned up in my ""network search"" :) So, I Yelped it! [Sorry, Yelp has been my local search of choice, but I'm willing to take Citysearch for a spin.] The shop is located on the second floor of an apartment building, right across the street from the 72nd & Broadway subway stop. The place feels like someone's home, as if you came to see your trusty russian auntie (if you had one), who is also an excellent dress maker. Since I wasn't in a rush, they scheduled my first trial in three weeks and right on the dot I received an email from their friendly assistant that it was ready. I should mention, too, that during the first trial we went with what I thought the length of the gown should be, even though the professionals felt it might be too long. They were right, but I appreciated that they were willing to try different options. We had another ""collaboration"" when designing the bustle, but this time my suggestion was a winning one :) But boy, do they know their bustles! At the end, they delivered a beautiful work, while the service was very personal, yet professional. After all, would you really want to tell your trusty russian auntie that you didn't like something she so lovingly made for you? I bought my wedding dress more than a year before my actual wedding. I lost a considerable amount of weight when I finally took to get it altered. For sure I thought that nothing could be done. However, the people at Silhouettes & Profiles were very accommodating. They made this dress look like it was custom made for me. I cannot stress how wonderful of a job they did. At 6 months pregnant, I took a bridesmaid dress to be altered. There was a LOT of work to be done to the dress that was way too small and they did an AMAZING job. Not only were they able to take it out and make it fit, but at the wedding I got multiple compliments on the way it looked an fit. It took some work, but they were great, helpful and timely. I was very fussy about the way I wanted my bridesmaid dress to be altered but the ladies at Silhouettes & Profiles were not only extremely patient and understanding about it, but they also made me feel like it wasn’t a problem at all. At first I was dreading to wear the dress - it just wasn’t flattering me… but which bridesmaid dress does, right? Well, somehow though it was altered in the way that made me feel good about myself and I can confidently say that I have never seen so beautifully fitted dress on me. I also found out that some gorgeous dresses, skirts and blouses displayed around their office were made by them! They were all so unusual and fine-looking that I got excited to try some of them on. I particularly fell in love with one dress and decided to buy it. Today I’m celebrating my 30th birthday and I’m going to wear that lovely dress! They definitely know what they are doing! I went in a month before my brother's wedding to get a bridesmaid's dress taken out. Before it was finished, they called to let me know that because the dress had piping around the waistband, they wanted to check with me about the next move. They could either create new piping (which would add $70) or finish the dress without adding piping and still make it look good. I picked the second option. I was nervous when I went to go pick it up-- but the finished it on time--even after they contacted me to double-check. When I get my wedding dress altered, I will definitely bring it to them. I used Silhouettes and Profiles to help fix my mothers wedding dress that I am wearing for my wedding in September. The dress came out of preservation with large brown stains in several focal points. The stains (luckily) were on satin panels rather than the lace part of the dress. I took the dress to two other alteration places to see how much it would be to get the stained panels replaced. Both of the estimates were over $1000. One place even told me I could go to the garmet district and find the correct fabric and they would replace it! Silhouettes replaced my panels (and did a beautiful job with amazing attention to detail) for literally a fraction of the price. \r \r I also had them fix a Herve Leger dress for an engagement party that needed some major help. It was too big under the arms, the straps were too long and there was a hole in one of the seams. The dress came back perfect a week later! I got so many compliments on it. \r \r I live downtown, but from now on I will take the trip to the Upper West Side to have these VERY talented women save my clothes! You would be making a huge mistake not to come here--for everything from wedding dresses to simple alterations. Pros: Friendly, affordable, quick (do you need anymore?) Cons: NONE! more

I found this company of talented women through NYVintage where I bought a beautiful satin cocktail dress from the 50's (I think). The detail on this dress is in the folds and draping of the thing- I had to have it taken in from an 8 to 4/6 which is no easy feat. I also needed it done in a week due to the limits of an out of town wedding I was attending. I cannot express enough what a magician this woman was, and so sweet when I asked her opinion or expressed concern of any sort. She had patience and even suggested a slight hem to make it more youthful on me. This dress belongs in a museum under the heading ""Ava Gardner red carpet looks"" but it's mine. Oh yeah they even reinforced the fabric where it was beginning to fray. In a word BRILLIANT Pros: Artists of the cloth, Sooo accomodating and more than reason Cons: I don't live close enough more

The tailors at Silhouettes & Profiles are amazing. I was recently in two weddings (one at 7 months pregnant and one at 8 months pregnant) and neither bridesmaid dress was maternity. However, they worked their magic and both dresses fit perfectly. Plus they suggested that they do the work just before the weddings to get the best fit and suggested we do two fittings to make sure the dresses look perfect. I have been to many, many tailors in NYC and am rarely satisfied. I brought in a bridesmaids dress that fit horribly and they really did make this too picky girl happy. They reworked the entire dress to fit me and stayed patient with me through many fittings. Highly recommended! Pros: Best alterations in NYC...Very Patient!!! more
