Sashi Sushi is great 9/15/2008

Took some friends to check out the new Manhattan Beach night life offerings this weekend. Liked it! Sashi is going to be part of the regular mix for us.\r \r Sophisticated crowd. Plenty of couples out for the evening. Some groups. The bar had some familiar local faces and regular ""players"" we see at Shade and Towne scoping the crowd for singles. Planned to, but never made it to Twelve + Highland which is nearby. In fact, ""12"" exploded on the scene and got lots of attention, but is turning out just to be a cathouse. We hope Sashi keeps it's reputation and refinement and doesn't become a flash in the pan.\r \r Regarding the food, it is similar to Petros and Upper Manhattan in quality. It's not open for lunch. The dinner menu is great. But to be frank, although it's a more sophisticated atmosphere, the service was a bit slow (as you could expect because it's not been open long). Despite the slowness, the staff was really friendly and helpful.\r \r We'll be back. Good job Sashi. more

Sashi is GREAT!! 9/7/2008

We went to Sashi the first week it opened and we thought the food was great but the service was at best bad. They FIXED it!! We had a great time. The food was amazing, service was perfect and we really enjoyed our night. Good work on correcting the service. We love Sashi and will be back. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Sake Cons: Not opened for lunch yet more

Worth the Drive 9/7/2008

We finally gave in and drove down to meet our Manhattan Beach friends for dinner last night. They have been talking about their new sushi restaurant for a couple of weeks and we figured we owed it to them after all of our Katsuya dinners in Brentwood. We were very impressed. The sushi and robata was excellent. We tried some great sake that no one had ever had before. But the stand out dish was the hamachi toban-yaki (sp?). Amazing! The restaurant was packed which made for great people watching but didn't help the speed of service. All in all, we had a great experience and will come back. Pros: Great Food, Beautiful Restaurant, Fun People Watching Cons: We no longer have an excuse to drag our MB friends to Brentwood more

i'll never sit in weekend traffic driving up to LA again 9/7/2008

great looking staff, great vibe, great service, AWESOME food and drinks. the south bay needed something like this, you can actually go out with friends or a date without driving to LA to deal with the crowds, traffic, people, etc. nice to see the nightlife in this town is finally catching up to taste and standards of the evolving local crowd. beach trash- you can have shellback, we've got a new spot!!!!!!!!!! Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Favorite Restaurant in South Bay 9/6/2008

i am a huge blogger and i wanted to tell everyone about my dinner tonight at Sashi. After reading the last review I think that person accidently walked into Fusion Sushi which is right next door . There was four of us and everyone thought the food was amazing. The look and feel was great. I travel for a living and eat at some of the better places in the world, so when I say that Sashi nailed it, believe it!! Great food, great scene. The only owner we met bought our entire group a bottle of sake because we were seated 30 minutes late. If anything the staff was nice and apologetic. Bottom line Sashi was excellent Not sure who Leonard is but if he was anything like our waiter or the hostess he rocks. Check it out. Pros: Food, Food Food Cons: Came with my wife more

No need to bother wasting your time here..... 9/6/2008

I think the employees or friends of the owners are writing the good reviews. My group's experience was so bad that I can't imagine other people found this place good. We got seated at 9:30pm for an 8:30pm reservation. There is no reason the staff can't say politely to a party (after meal has been placed on the table), ""We have several parties waiting for a table. So that I can give you great service quickly, may I take your dessert or after drink order now?"". This lets people know other parties are waiting without sounding rude. When we finally did get seated, the food came out one at a time, sporadically, & the wait staff called most of the dishes by something other than the name on the menu, so no one knew if it was something they had ordered. All but 2 dishes were salty (not-edible-salty!). We sent dishes back, but when most other dishes came out salty too, we just gave up complaining. Dinner took 2.5 hrs -- the kitchen was so backed up, it took THAT LONG to get 8 people fed. It ruined our night. The time to get seated & finish dinner made it too late for us to get in to any local dance places (it was a special night -- a birthday for someone in our party.) The only good thing I can say was that Leonard (?, the manager) was the only employee on top of things. He gave us a free drink due to another bad service issue I'm not going to mention in this review. However, re: other employees, there was so much chaos & disorganization I was embarrassed for them. And then, when one of the owners came to our table to get our feedback, his response was a pout & this comment: ""Well, please try us again."". (Excuse me? What incentive do we have to come back when there are so many other great places nearby?) Unless they get their act together, sadly, I do not see this plce staying open for more than a yr. I may come back for a standard drink (not for their toilet cleaner specialties) & the beautiful scene, but, why would I when I can get that at Petros or Shade or Towne? -k Pros: Beautiful people, beuatiful scene Cons: everything else - except Leonard more

Finally! Upscale Japanese in the South Bay done right!!! 9/4/2008

My husband and I (and everyone else in town) have long been anticipating the opening of Sashi and were NOT disappointed. We celebrated our anniversary there last weekend and were worried about a new place being overwhelmed on the holiday weekend but the service was fantastic, attentive enough and always timely without ever interrupting or seeming overbearing. The food was TO DIE FOR, every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious. The ten hour pork and jidori chicken cigars are both must-tries. Also, take advantage of the sake sommelier for pairings, I never knew I could enjoy sake so much, there truly is something for every palate! I haven't even mentioned the ambience, fun, romantic, chic, pulled off perfectly without trying too hard. We have traveled the world and are so excited to have such fine cuisine and a superb overall experience right here in our own backyard. Pros: Food, service, ambience, parking . . . Cons: Why couldn't Sashi have opened years ago?!?!? more

Best Restaurant in South Bay 9/4/2008

Ok it's here. Best sushi I have had hands down in the South Bay. My wife and I went there on Sunday night and had a great time. Between the decor, food, and service we give this place ""Two Thumbs Up"". My wife is not a big sushi person but the menu had so many non sushi items to chose from that were delicious. We saw our friends there who said that some of their dishes were similar to Katsuya's but better. We stayed after our meal and hung out in their lounge which was a great place to people watch. All in all we will be back very soon. Sashi is our new spot. Pros: Food, Decor, Service, Cons: Very popular so might be tough to get a reservation without calling days in advance more

I really wanted to like it.... 8/31/2008

but it just wasn't that good. \r 8 of my friends and I went there for my birthday. The place looks nice - hip and trendy. Nice lighting and quite the scene. It was little too noisy to really talk so I was happy when we finally got a table to eat at. By the way, we had reservations and still didn't get seated for an hour, but I realize that sometimes happens. BUT, what makes this review not so very good is the fact that almost every dish we had was salty or just not that good, including several of the specialty drinks. One of the drinks tasted like turpentine - in fact, we would have different members of our party take a sip and the flash the camera of them to get their response. If nothing, we had fun with that!\r \r The orders took a long time (one dish took almost 2 hours to get and we simply had to cancel it because dinner was done.) There was a lot of confusion with the orders and the bill of $500+ . We were charged for everything and then some. The waiter pointed out at the bottom of the bill is one general category for credit with some ambiguous credit of $48 so we really couldn't tell what was double charged and what was credited. Granted the restaurant just opened, but their operation was so disorganized and the food was not very good. What made matters worse is that one of the owners told me that he would come by and give me a birthday shot....which he didn't. When he finally approached the table at midnight (yes, that's when we finally were wrapping it up!), we told him all the ""problems"" that we encountered, and he didn't do anything to try to win our business back on another occasion other than to just say...please come back. THAT was pretty disappointing....makes me NOT want to rush back ANYTIME soon. Pros: Nice setting, great neighborhood Cons: Poor service, poor food, poor managment more

Fresh new restaurant 8/30/2008

I really enjoyed Sashi, and think that it is a great addition to Manhattan Beach. The place is hip and trendy, and the food is well presented. It's a little pricey , but the quality of the food is excellent, and they did just open, so I think that once they work out a few kinks it will be fine! more

Sushi Roku Wannabe 8/29/2008

Oh gimme a break! The sushi was soso and the eel was terrible! dry and not tasty at all. Server had no clue about sushi names in Japanese. People watching was good, especially since the only table available was in the bar area. Two beers and a plate of sushi and the bill was $75. Not good value. Example- Toro for $14 (two pieces)? \r Might as well go to Octopus if you are thinking of this place... Pros: Skimpy clothing attire Cons: Could empty your wallet quickly more

Best sushi hands down in the South Bay 8/25/2008

Finally, this place puts Manhattan Beach on the culinary map. This is one of the best places for sushi that I've had in L.A., much less the South Bay. The chef comes from the Iron Chef circle, so the fish is really fresh and the robata grill and hot entrees are also excellent. \r \r The environment reminds me a lot of Nobu, and the level and type of food are up to par. Recommended food items include: the spicy tuna on crispy rice, the chicken meatball and cod skewers from the robata grill, and the tuna, tuna, salmon roll. I can't wait to go back to try other menu items since everything looked really good.\r \r Definitely a welcome addition to otherwise pretty bland restaurant offerings in Manhattan Beach. Of note, they are not open for lunch. Pros: Excellent sushi at reasonable prices; Some of the best sushi I've had in L.A. Cons: The fact that it took so long for a restaurant like this to come to Manhattan Beach more

Yummy 8/25/2008

We went to dinner there on the second night they were open, we were very happy with the sushi and the service, the drink menu was extensive and really like the atmosphere. I would reccomend the spicy tuna on crispy rice, and the sangria was fab! About time we have a high end yummy sushi place in MB! more

Incredible Food, Great Vibe. 8/24/2008

Finally: A high end Japanese restaurant in the South Bay. The space, staff, and food is absolutely beautiful. I'm guessing that people will compare Sashi to Nobu, but the menu is broader and food was better. Their Sake Lounge is a great place for drinks and appetizers. If you go, be sure to engage the sake sommelier, she made some great chilled sake recommendations. Must have dishes: Spicy Miso Chilean Sea Bass and 10-Hour Pork Kukuni. Pros: FOOD, Ambience, Ample Parking, Great Service Cons: Dessert menu needs more familiar items more
