Editorial review from Citysearch 10/16/2012

I just brought my wife here, romance and old world charm in this hidden little gem off the beaten track. A vintage 20's atmosphere sets this place off with a live 3 piece band and unreal food. This place is a must on your to eat list.) more

Really great! 7/27/2011

Good Food , nice cocktails, hip interior! This is the perfect place to go for a gal's night out! Our server was even engaging to my friend from NYC who was so excited that this was our first destination in Portland! I highly recommend it! more

Consistently great food & value 3/25/2010

I have eaten at the Sapphire many, many times and have always enjoyed a great meal, as well as some very interesting cocktails to sip alongside! The service has always been friendly and the staff knows the product - cause I'm one of those tons of questions guests - We always get the stuffed dates for an appetizer, and usually whatever the server suggests for the specialty cocktail and for the entree, and we have never been disappointed! Pros: great variety and value Cons: parking is sometimes tough more

Snoty server 3/19/2010

We went as a recommendation of a friend. Only to find out, it was dark and kinda dirty. Our server wasn't very pleasant, seemed as though she didn't enjoy her job and we were an annoyance. We, I'm sorry to say, will never visit the Sapphire Hotel again. Pros: none Cons: server didn't seem like she enjoyed her job more

A definite do. Great happy hour! 1/19/2010

Great little place tucked away at the edges of Hawthorne! Quaint, dark, inexpensive, and tasty food. Matchbooks are available like toothpicks and mints at the door. Love it! Wish their happy hour was earlier, but a great place to go nonetheless. Delicious food. Pros: Inventive drinks, nice atmosphere, decent food Cons: Small, crowded, wait staff hit/miss more

nice lights and menu 11/4/2009

SKIP IT! 8/10/2009

I met a friend recently at Sapphire for the first time. I was the only one in the place when I arrived at 4:30 on a Sunday. I was promptly greeted and given a menu. My friend arrived and we waited about 10 minutes to be able to order our drinks as two other couples had come in. We drank our drinks and talked and did not see the waitress for AT LEAST another 20 minutes - well, we saw her, serving all the other tables. We were absolutely unable to get her attention and we were sitting approx. 3 feet from the bar which she passed by 700 times. Finally, after raising my hand as if to answer a 3rd grade question, she came over and stared at us blankly - I asked if we could order some food to which the reply was ""sure"". We orderd 2 salads and 2 apps. Then, the real wait began. We waited 1 hr. and 10 minutes for those food items while every single table in the entire restaurant flipped at least once. After flagging the waitress down again, she quickly came over, didn't ask what we needed and said ""your order's coming up"" - and walked away.....uh, ok, but we actually wanted to order another drink. We managed to flag her down, again, and get our 2nd set of drinks. FINALLY the food arrived. We had 2 house salads, blackened chicken and a hummus plate (not a meal you'd think would take over an hour). The food was so-so at best. Plain salad greens with a couple pieces of parmesan and 4 candied walnuts that tasted like they were from a bin at Winco. The chicken was fine, but the special honey mustard sauce was just that, only with ground musard - OoooOOOh, how gourmet. The hummus plate would have been redeaming had the bread not been stale enough to scarecely be called bread, but more 'crackers'. We then paid over $40 and will not be back. We were flabbergasted, I was embarrassed for having suggested it and we couldn't believe our dining experience. Customer service is DEAD in Portland and 'artistic' decor does not subplant the need to simply treat your customers well. Oh, and for crying out loud - get a screen door. The place was FILLED with flies! Eeewwwwww Pros: Air conditioning Cons: Service, Food, Drinks, Price more

Great place, bad breakfast 6/30/2009

I think these guys should stick to what they do best; happy hour, light dinner and great drinks. Although our waitress was very sweet, attentive, and thorough, the eggs we undercooked, the ham was really, really salty and overcooked, and the lemon crepes were waaaaay too sweet. Add in a few 'endless champagnes', (brilliant marketing, however - only three of us had the champagne) you have a bad breakfast for four at $78 - and that's before the tip. In all, this is one of my favorite places in town for nightime fun but I likely will not be back for morning fare. Pros: Lots Cons: Breakfast more

favorite bar in portland 9/20/2008

It may be crowded on the weekends and there might be lots of couples on dates in this romantically decorated ""hotel"", but they have the best French Martini and the food's good too. I've tried the enchiladas and the cheese plate and I've had some of the drink specials which were rather tasty as well. I love the decor at this unique spot. Pros: Love the decor, drinks and food Cons: can be crowded and a bit of a couple's hang out more

Faublous Food, Great ambiance - Best kept secret! 7/21/2008

I called in advance to see if it was o.k. to bring our own birthday cake, which it was. Our party started rolling in at 8 pm. As our group expanded the wait staff found us more chairs until other near-by tables emptied out. No one had to wait long to order drinks that were top notch. I ordered some of the house's specialty cocktails that were excellent - there bartenders know how to pour! Though most of us had already eaten, we ordered up a number of appetizers after a few rounds of drinks. The dates wrapped in bacon were perfect ( o hard crusty skins o the dates - they were warm and soft and melted in your mouth with a silky texture next to the smoky-saltiness of the bacon) We also got an anti-pasta platter that was nearly licked clean by the time we left. The kitchen dressed up the birthday cake and served it with a beautiful light fresh fruit garnish. They also found some birthday candles, which I had forgotten, and didn't embarrass the birthday boy by singing - his friends took care of that. We came from out of town to a place we had never been to have, what became, a fabulous night. The ambiance and staff at the Sapphire were a big part of that success! Pros: Great Service! Delightful Menu with excellent Food! Great Drinks! Parking seemed easy. more

Great for relaxing date 6/11/2008

First you have to find the place...I drove by it for months before I even noticed it! This place is very warm and inviting. The decor is nice to look at, and it would be a great place for an intimate get together or date. The drinks were good, and they have sake served warm or cold. The bartender was very nice, and our glasses were never empty for long before someone would come by. I didn't try the food, but the ladies sitting next to us were having something that looked very delicious! I would come back here again. Pros: nice atmosphere more

Alluring atmosphere, delicious drinks, sterling service! 3/4/2008

Like the warm embrace of new love the ambiance of Sapphire immediately drew me in and set a relaxing tone for the evening. Even though the joint was jumping it some how maintained a sense of personable intimacy. The service was excellent, attentive and professional a quality that sadly many bars in Portland lack. \r \r Regrettably I only had time for drinks and look forward to working my way though the menu upon subsequent visits. Pros: Lush, romantic atmosphere. Fabulous drinks! more

Best Cheese Plate on Planet 2/2/2008

Great ambience and amazing cheese plate!! Love the drinks and the servers always look gorgeous and glamorous. My dining partner had steak and said it was delicious. Definitely the best happy hour around. But go early and look amazing...it's worth it. Pros: Cheese Plate from Heaven Cons: Service a bit slow more

Unexpected find! 6/28/2007

A friend took me here for the first time last night. Being tired of all the usual places, it was very exciting to find this place! Great drinks. The beer menu was a bit limited, although the offerings they had were good. The menu is mostly local and organic. I had the panzanella salad, which was delicious, and a good serving size. Menu is slightly limited as well, but all of us enjoyed our food. We went on a Wednesday night, and there weren't many people, so it was great conversation atmosphere. Good waitstaff. No complaints. Pros: Good food, drinks, ambience, bathrooms, location. Cons: Not necessarily for really picky eaters. more

Not as advertised 6/15/2007

My wife and I went to the Sapphire Thursday evening and were disappointed. \r \r First, when the waitress brought water it was without ice and was room temperture.\r \r While we had no complaints with our drinks (she had chardonnay and I had an IPA) the atmosphere was hardly as advertised. Loud, echoy, and not exactly the place for quiet, private conversation.\r \r The decor was early 21st century Craigs List, which is fine but Portland has plenty of bars with the same look and was about as ""romantic"" as an in store Starbucks.\r \r We wanted appetizers but nothing on the menu sounded even slightly appealing. Salmon and corn cakes?Puh-leeze.\r \r We were not there at Happy Hour and I could go back for that. Now that I know what to expect and not what is advertised. more

Mmmmmmmm mulled wine! 3/27/2007

If you go, take someone you love because it still oozes with the ""want to kiss"" atmosphere. Intimate and snuggly. It boasts some Asian decorative accents like paper lantern shades on the lights - lots of dark red and black wood but the menu is more ecclectic. Organic too!\r \r The cheese platter is amazing - plenty to indulge your senses - roasted garlic, figs, apples, grapes and bread complimet the baked brie, chevre goats cheese and crumbly blue and they throw in candied walnuts also. We shared the hanger steak and mashed sweet potatoes m m m m mmmmmm.\r \r The wait staff were attentive without loitering. It was a ""we struck gold"" moment for us.\r \r The mulled wine is the best we've tasted anywhere in the world!\r \r \r Pros: Wait staff/value for $/taste/mulled wine Cons: smaller menu than most restaurants but something for everyone still. more

Great customer service 12/7/2006

My husband & I went to The Sapphire Hotel on Tuesday night and loved it. We sat at the bar & enjoyed watching the bartendar mix her wonderful concoctions. She obviously loves what she does & when I asked her about it she said ""Especially this place. The clientele is great..."" Our drinks were very yummy. We regret that we'd eaten at a couple places before ending up here because the salmon corn cakes looked right up my alley. The place was busy and everyone looked like they were having a good time. We're closer to 40 than 20 so were especially impressed by the diverse age group. Defintely neighborly feeling like other reviews have mentioned. I've already told several of my friends about our visit & we'll be back..to eat this time. Pros: Bartendar, creative drinks more

Great example of good food, service and price 11/12/2006

First visit will not be the last. Varied menu with great homemade breads and deserts. Not your meatloaf and burger family restr. Wine is priced less than retail. Service is quick and attentive. A must stop and see. Locally owned by young women who are experienced bar and kitchen pros. Pros: Funky clean friendly outside tables Cons: parking more
