Choices 9/20/2011

Ok, I stop by Rick's at least 2 times a week. My favorite thing in the delicacy of decadence is the fresh fruit tart. Not afraid to say it. But I felt it was about time I let the people know how awesome this place is. So many choices. more

Wow 11/12/2009

My husband was telling me today how he and my daughter spotted Rick's dessert diner yesterday during a walk and how the desserts looked amazing. But after reading these comments and the awful experience they had with not only their choices but with the unprofessional owner, we won't be going there. What disgusting behavior from a business owner. I rather go to Freeport bakery where I've never had a bad experience and the cakes are wonderful. more

Worst customer service 6/6/2009

I ordered a cake for my husband's party. I went in Wednesday to order a cake with cream cheese frosting, as that is his favorite. The person who helped me was lovely and took the order, albeit he was new and had a difficult time. This was not a problem. When I picked up the cake, it was very, very dry with buttercream frosting (which my husband really doesn't care for). I called and informed the manager/owner of the error. I was willing to come in and get a different flavor of cake with cream cheese that he had available and was also open to any other solution he could offer. Instead, he literally screamed at me on the phone, telling me I had insulted him for not liking buttercream. He admitted his employee had made a mistake but then said I should have filled out the form myself and he makes ""the most perfect, beautiful cake in the world...it's award-winning cake."" He continued to tell me that I was a terrible person, that he made perfect cakes, that I was against his race (he and I are, in fact, the same ethnic background), and that I did not deserve to eat his cake. I was shocked and told my husband. He went in to the diner to take the cake back and get the refund. He calmly talked to the owner who proceeded to yell at him in front of other customers. Several customers were looking to purchase wedding cakes from this establishment and chose not to after hearing the over-the-top, horrific things that were said. One man thought the owner was going to physically react to someone and started to call the police. (My husband also went in with his mother and the owner yelled at her as well. She was just standing there). I will not ever return - there is no reason to be treated that way by anyone, let alone as a customer. If you eat here, know that it is as is -- do not make any negative comments, ask to change your order, etc. (They have also lost my cake order before). It was truly unbelievable. Pros: Carrot Cake Cons: Everything else - customer service more

Love it! 5/21/2009

I love the Kahlua Bomb Cake (the boob cake). I usually come here after dinner at Tres Hermanas. Some cake and milk is the best topper to yummy mexican. \r \r The line is crazy long on the weekends, and they're fairly packed on week nights also. However, it's totally worth the wait, and if they're isn't room inside or out to enjoy your dessert then get it to go, and enjoy it at home.\r \r The staff is also very friendly, even though they don't have time to chit chat. more

DO NOT GO!! 4/29/2009

Today my very good friend and I went wanted to enjoy dessert after a long day of work. We were in the area and stopped by Rick?s Dessert and Diner located on K Street and 23rd. However, we should have just keept? on going because of Rick?s foul, impolite, and vulgar attitude towards his guests. If there was any award-winning here, it should have been for his unpleasant and overall RUDE attitude! Cons: unbelievably rude customer service more

IT HAS VERY GOOD SWEETS, It small & expensive 1/26/2009

No parking,MIDDLE OF DOWNTOWN, Great sweets, VERY EXPENSIVE,thats the TRUTH NOT MY OPINION.Nice place old school inside, too expensive Pros: GREAT SWEETS Cons: SMALL SIZE,VERY EXPENSIVE, its in DOWNTOWN!!! more

Desserts that make you want to slapp Yo Mamma! 12/24/2008

When you walk in the circa 50's, neon light accented, multi-colored boothed boutique you know you are in a place like no other. You smell buttter, roasted pecan, pineapple, berries and chocolate wafting dubiously en areo, daring you to forget... to dis-inhibit and Go for it. The cakes are stacked high and decorated to dismantle any remaining inhibitions that your nose may have foregone. From chocolate cake, to brownies, icecream, pies tarts, tortes, custards and cookies-there is a sweet to touch that special need in your mouth. I decided on a piece of the delectable carrot cake and a white chocolate brownie - was not dissappointed. Mothers out there (fathers and kids too) be warned... your face is not safe when I visit Ricks DD!!! Pippette eat your heart out... Pros: close to all the downtown restaurants, night life, ambience, big windows more

yummy desserts 10/30/2008

this is a great place to get dessert. just looking at all of them through the glass window makes my mouth water. its a little claustrophobic inside so there is eating spaces outside as well. more

50's vibe and fab cakes 3/14/2008

I had first learned on this place online, while I was surfing for a place to eat at. I was really intrigued by their menu and when I actually had the time to go there and actually have their cakes, it was to die for! I've been there sooo many times, its actually weird. Their red velvet cake is amazing. 6 layers of goodness. and their blackout cheese cake is OMG sooo good. you cant even taste the cheese its all chocolate. their juke box is full of cute songs. I love their warhol inspired posters. more

Dissapointed in their dependability & customer service 11/2/2007

We had been to this place before because they sold a unique cake flavor that one of our employees really enjoyed. This year I ordered the cake a week prior to the day we would need to pick it up. I even spoke to the owner & he took my order. The day of the persons birthday we drove a half hour to this place & when we got there they told us they didn't have it. Supposedly they had no order or record of it & out of every cake they had they didnt have the one we needed. It was the DAY of the employee's birthday! They did not apologize, try to fix the issue, offer anything, etc. I would never be able to trust Ricks again with something important such as a wedding cake or even a birthday cake when they cant even remember to make it. I couldn't imagine if something like this happened to a couple on their wedding day. Maybe I should have waited until the last minute to order it so they wouldn't be incompetent & lose the order. We were very dissapointed with their customer service and how they reacted to the mistake. They did not try to resolve the situation and didn't even apologize. Pros: Unique types of cake Cons: Bad customer service more

Cute restaurant 4/2/2007

Great place for a date, there are tons of choices, but be prepared for the huge crowd on Friday and Saturday nights. I like the variety of choices but none of the desserts are what I would call spectacular more

By far the best desert around..... 11/21/2006

I have been going to Rick's for many years, and was surprised when I saw the earlier negative reviews until I looked at the dates they were posted. Yes, they had a rough year awhile ago, but they definitely came back in full force. It is crowded on weekend nights, but I've never known anyone to regret the wait. There is a huge selection, and I would strongly disagree with the previous reviews about portion size and inconsistency. For me, the servings have always been more than enough to satisfy my appetite and still have leftovers to take home. The servers are friendly and the deserts are amazing. Rick's is a unique Sacramentan institution. I fully recommend it for a date night, a special treat for family members young and old, and I've even been known to go by myself once in awhile when I've needed a small indulgence. I've ordered several birthday cakes there as well, and they have always awed my guests. Pros: Taste, portions, uniqueness Cons: Hard to choose just one desert to try more

Yummy desserts 6/9/2006

I almost passed this place while driving. Parking is not easy to find so be prepared to walk a bit. It's a small place that makes you think of the 50's. Once inside, you are greated with huge cakes, pies and pastries. You can also have something to drink (coffee, espresso, latte, ect). The prices are reasonable. You can either eat inside or outside when the weather is nice. PROS: Tasty cakes, small outdoor eating area CONS: small more

review from an ex-midtowner who misses Rick's! 12/12/2005

The desserts here are incredible. The serving sizes can be inconsistent, but even the ""small"" slices are plenty, considering how many layers most cakes have and how rich they are. The one problem at Rick's is that leftovers are covered and kept until they run out. So if you're ordering an unpopular cake, chances are it's been sitting there a day or two and won't be as delicious as if it were fresh. I disagree with complaints about the price -- it's only a dollar more than you'd pay at Denny's and the quality is no comparison! The cakes are expensive compared to Safeway but about standard for a specialty bakery. Keep in mind there is often a line at peak hours. On the bright side you can use the time you spend waiting to decide what to order! Pros: delicious!, many varieties, reasonable price Cons: long lines more

My experence 12/4/2005

The food was good, but as someone had said previously, the serving size is very slim, It depends on the mood of the waitress. The ambience isnt that great. Everytime I go there is a homeless man who sits in one of the seats and stinks and they let him stay for some reason. The food is awesome, BUT considering the price, 32 dollars for a cheesecake is too obscene for me. Pros: Good Dessert Cons: EXPENSIVE!!!, Poor Serving Size, Poor Service more

What Happened?? 5/23/2004

Every time I went to Sacramento over the past few years, I had to have a slice of scrumptious Kahlua Bomb or other chocolate based cake. The past two times both my dessert & my husband's were terrible. Has the diner changed owners or chefs? The desserts were either super salty or super bland. What happened?? Pros: atmoshere Cons: gone downhill more

disappointed 5/18/2004

After reading the tempting reviews, I was excited to visit. We were disapointed first by the staff that couldn't tell us if a certain dessert was a cheesecake or mousse or what it was called and then further by the 2 cakes we chose, both were dry. more

Good Desserts, Inconsistent Portions 9/24/2003

Each time I go to Rick's it is a gamble. Good desserts which are consistently good but portions are all over the place. Used to be huge, and now range from slivers to good. And when paying $5 for a slice of cake I expect it to be huge. My favorites are the german chocolate cake, the champagne cake, and the carrot cake. Definitely a good late night spot to hit for dessert. Good people watching. more
