Best Restaurant in New Orleans 8/25/2007

This is my current #1 favorite restaurant in New Orleans. The food: Beyond incredible. You can't go wrong. The service is marvelous! The place itself is gorgeous, and feels fancy and lively at the same time. Beautiful interior without a trace of stuffiness. This is everything I want in a special night out. I'm madly in love with this place. Can't wait to go back. Pros: Everything more

Great atmosphere for a special night out 7/16/2007

I honestly couldn't get over how beautiful the interior of this place is - the exposed brick and the shimmering chandeliers lent it such an exquisite elegance. The staff was attentive and nice, the wine recommended was delicious, and the food was quite good. Though my husband got something that was good but not incredible (I can't even remember what it was, only that it didn't stand out in our minds, haha), I had a lobster over pork dish that was simply amazing and definitely goes down as one of the best meals I've ever had. It was really such a perfect combination of flavors. However, my dessert left something to be desired....the cake portion (I believe it was a banana rum cake with berries) tasted as if it had been frozen at some point....not good. That said, for a romantic evening this is a great place to go. more

""August"" Every Month of the Year 6/5/2007

From table to table, from person to person, you keep hearing the same thing...I'll have the sugar and spice duckling with Anson Mills grits, roasted duck foie and local strwberries (Mississippi strwberries are in season-June). This dish is right-on. If you enjoy duck, this restaurant has to be on your ""must visit"" list. more

good. pricey 3/5/2007

i had heard much about this place, from being the city's finest to being over-priced. recently i had the chance to find out first hand... \r \r first, the amuse bouche - a sort of egg & truffle custard served in an eggshell. it was amazing tasting! the flavors were perfectly fused & balanced, and i just wanted it to last forever. a good sign. next, for appetizers we had foie gras three ways, and the jumbo lump crab w/ truffle gnocchi. foie gras was nicely plated, however none of the three ways were grilled, so it was basically the same texture three times. the gnocchi was *excellent* in flavor, just the right amount of truffle, cream, crab -- but it was 20 bucks. the online menu lists it at 12, but they say now its a higher grade of truffle. im opposed to $20 apps; i think i would prefer it at 12, as im not sure id be able to discern the difference. salad was nice, tho i dont remember what it was. for an entree i had the rabbit & lobster pasta roll (cant remember its name); at first glance it appeared small, but it was rich enough to sate my appetite, and i was glad it wasnt any larger. the desserts were definitely on the weak side, nothing really leapt out at us. we had one but it was unmemorable.\r \r the wait staff were obviously highly trained -- our head waiter had just about the right level of aloofness, countered w/ attentive servers underneath him. no complaints. Pros: some excellent dishes Cons: a miss or two, definately pricey more

best in nola... 11/16/2006

lived here for 4 years, been to most of the great restaurants here (so many!). this was quite possibly my best meal. we had 9 in our party, had fantastic service, and a truly great meal. you know how normally, even when all the food is good, someone's meal is invariably the best? not the case here. from duck to rabbit to lamb (my dish), everything was perfect. yup, it was pricey, but it was good. for about the equivalent money, better than commander's, brennan's, galatoire's, and certainly the emeril's restaurants. Pros: food, service more

Top notch! The new IT place to eat for locals 9/21/2006

Great appetizers, always something new from the chefs here. If you are a man, try the 34oz. Cowboy Steak if you can handle it.....The Seafood Tower is good, when in season. The wine list is among the best in the city and they don't up-charge like Commander's. Been here three times, perfect everytime.\r \r Wait staff is friendly, very knowledgeable and prompt. Bread sticks and butter are great too!\r \r Needs some work on the dessert menu, but that will come with time. Pros: Wine Room seating great for romantic dinner, comfy seating, very quiet Cons: Dessert menu (chocolate cake anyone?), bathroom breaks require going upstairs more

Balance Off in Food 8/27/2006

We had dinner at Restaurant August on Saturday night. We did have to wait 30 minutes for our 9:00 PM reservation, but that can be expected when eating so late. The building is beautiful and the staff very attentive. However, I was not very satisfied with the food. The balance was off in three of our dishes - the figs with ham, goat cheese, and honey was about 80% country ham wrapped around a tiny fig, no goat cheese that you can taste, and a drizzle of honey. It was all about country ham, which any good Southerner loves, but not enough to chew on with a glass of fantastic Rhone. There was nothing to cut all the salt. I had really envisioned a take on something we ate in Tuscany. The lamb dish was much the same - the chop and the pulled lamb were good, but the side of mushy eggplant in a tough pastry shell was plain awful. Once again, there was nothing to balance the fat flavor of the lamb. Finally, we ordered the upside down peach cake with blueberry sorbet. The cake was wonderful, but sorbet is the wrong flavor and texture for this southern comfort. Blueberry ice cream would have been dead on. So, while the meal had its hi-lights, I would not go back and not recommend to friends. I feel like this is a technical disagreement in the presentation of the flavors. Pros: Staff, wine list, location Cons: Overall food presentation more

Huge disappointment 11/16/2005

It was late January 2005 when two house guests from out of town came in and wanted to dine at a ""special"" restaurant. We suggested August for the occasion, and made reservations for six of us. It was downhill from there. It should be noted that the restaurant was not crowded that evening. We ordered cocktails before dinner, which were slow in being delivered. For whatever reason, it appeared that the waiters were completely disinterested in this table. The entrees were rather small (nouvelle cuisine ?) and nothing special flavorwise. The price was certainly not commensurate with the quality. All in all, a very disappointing evening! Pros: Valet parking, Not crowded, Pleasant ambiance Cons: Food quality, Bad service, Expensive more

Congrats John! 4/14/2005

FINALLY! John Besh is now totally in charge! August is a triumph in all ways. The food, is sprctacular, and John is under rated. He is a star! His steakhouse at Harrah's Casino is also grand! This is our favorite restaurant in New Orleans, and we visit several times every year. The banquet areas are perfection for any occasion! Bon Chance! The Desserts and Gnocci are to die for! See y'all soon! Dr. Taylor Pros: FOOD, Service, value Cons: crowded at times more

THE ART OF THE TABLE 3/22/2005

August was the highlight of our week long trip. This is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had on the planet. Four of us sat in the main dining room, it's gorgeous and you can hear each other talk. Amuse bouche was a foie gras profiterole-talk about oral pleasure(SIGH). I had the Morrocan Duck, never had duck like that ever! My friends were eating off my plate and wishing they had ordered it.Everyone loved their food and we all shared because it was just so sensational. Order different desserts so you can taste ""the art of the table"". Presentation will have you oohing. Ask Zeke about anything on the menu and you're in for a treat. We're still talking about this dinner weeks later!...Try as many different dishes as possible. You won't be sorry. Pros: Food, Ambience, service more

Outstanding!! 4/6/2004

One of the best I've had. This place makes others look like ""cold turkey"". My hat tips to John Besh and his hardworking staff. This is a ""must do"" for locals and visitors alike to the New Orleans area. Pros: atmosphere, sharp staff, value more
