Balance Off in Food 8/27/2006

We had dinner at Restaurant August on Saturday night. We did have to wait 30 minutes for our 9:00 PM reservation, but that can be expected when eating so late. The building is beautiful and the staff very attentive. However, I was not very satisfied with the food. The balance was off in three of our dishes - the figs with ham, goat cheese, and honey was about 80% country ham wrapped around a tiny fig, no goat cheese that you can taste, and a drizzle of honey. It was all about country ham, which any good Southerner loves, but not enough to chew on with a glass of fantastic Rhone. There was nothing to cut all the salt. I had really envisioned a take on something we ate in Tuscany. The lamb dish was much the same - the chop and the pulled lamb were good, but the side of mushy eggplant in a tough pastry shell was plain awful. Once again, there was nothing to balance the fat flavor of the lamb. Finally, we ordered the upside down peach cake with blueberry sorbet. The cake was wonderful, but sorbet is the wrong flavor and texture for this southern comfort. Blueberry ice cream would have been dead on. So, while the meal had its hi-lights, I would not go back and not recommend to friends. I feel like this is a technical disagreement in the presentation of the flavors. Pros: Staff, wine list, location Cons: Overall food presentation more
