This is one of my Portland favorites. The food is excellent and the drinks are great too. The service has always been exceptional as well. If you're willing to spend a little bit ...

Went to Roux on my bday in May 2008 and the food was incredible. Thinking about the place days afterwards..I went back in June and wow was I dissappointed. The menu had changed al...

Hankerin' for some comfort food 1/31/2006

Attention southerners on the hunt for comfort/soul food. Roux has come the closests of all I've tried in PDX. All the tastes of home with an added Northwest touch. Same tastes, but fresher, not so cooked down ingredients. The collard greens tasted just like my grandma's but still maintained their shape and texture. Loved them! All courses were delicious! Can't wait to go back for po' boys , grit cakes and Sunday brunch! Pros: food, service more

A New Portland Institution 1/31/2006

I have eaten here several times and continue to come back. It is a wonderful addition to this hotly developing neighborhood joining New Seasons, Sal's, Sagittarius, Sohbet, and DiPrima. One wonderful dish that hasn't been mentioned in previously is the Rabbit with a cornmeal stuffing. I am not a Rabbit fan because it is too boney. This dish was deboned and wrapped around the stuffing. A wonderful combination of taste and texture. A unique dish in Portland. Roux has started serving brunch on weekends. The Eggs Benedict has perfectly made hollandaise sauce. The French Toast (Pain Perdu) is a dream. Very custardy. Only complaint I would have is the live music is amplified. Why the musician has to amplify in a confined space I'll never know. Hard to take in the mornings when soft music would be much better especially if you were up late the night before! Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance Cons: Amped Brunch Music more

Bravo for picking N. Portland 12/15/2005

My husband, 5 year old daughter and I went their recently and the food was great. I would call this upscale cajun. The food is more refined than what you would find at a cajun bistro, but still stays true to it's roots. Although most people would not define this as a good place to take kids, we never limit ourselves in where we take our daughter (fortunately she knows how to behave in a nice restuarant). So even though they don't have a kids menu or crayons, kudos to the waitstaff for making us ALL feel welcome. My daughter loved the pumpkin soup and the duck breast. And so did I! We will defintely return. Pros: good food, good service, priced appropriately Cons: lack of parking more

loved it 12/5/2005

I loved the food, and the service was wonderful! I had the pork chops with figs and goat cheese grit cakes, some of my friends had the duck, and the chicken and a vegitarian plate and they all raved about their dishes. The drinks are FAB!!! Please have the banana fritters because they are to die for. I will be going back for more!!! Pros: service, food Cons: parking more

the best dirty rice 12/2/2005

We had a group of eight for a birthday there in November. The service was prompt and attentive. Almost each one of had something different and we all split the dinners. Everything was amazing. The dirty rice with the New York steak was to die for. I highly recommend this restaurant. Check out the Amnesia IPA and the lemon drops. Pros: FOOD, SERVICE Cons: NONE, NONE, NONE more

My boyfriend and I happened upon Roux on my birthday when the restaurant where we intended to eat was closed. Our bartender overheard that it was my birthday and gave us extra-special treatment. The food was scrumptious and the ambiance was very romantic, complete with old jazz in the background. I highly recommend the trout and the chicken. Good cocktails, too! Pros: music, ambiance more

Great Place to Eat 11/28/2005

Love this place...what a great addition to the neighborhood! I have been able to dine there a couple times with my wife now and we are continually impressed by the food, service, and atmosphere. Pros: The cute owner that sits at the end of the bar! more

A serious disappointment 11/27/2005

After waiting over an hour for our entries, we left without eating. That says it all. more

ROUX Rocks 11/23/2005

We had very different entrees from the duck with sweet potatoes to the sole with blue crab and the molasses brined pork chops everything was fantastic! The service was super friendly and the food was far tastier than other restaurants in the same price range. Food was more like a Pacific NW-Creole fusion. Pros: great food, service Cons: parking more

WHAT is the NAME on the RESERVATION, PLEASE??!? 11/22/2005

Apparently, patrons not permitted to enter this establishment on Friday evenings without producing a reservation. I found this out the hard way when I was confronted by the host while attempting to meet up with friends for an after-work get-together last week. He became extremely frustrated with me when I asked if I could just look around to see if my party had arrived, and demanded my name in a tone usually reserved for law enforcement purposes. Luckily my friends were, in fact there, so I managed to avoid whatever punishment reserved for tresspassers such as myself. Yikes. Pros: location Cons: service, scarce parking more

Too much HYPE!!!!!!!!!! 11/21/2005

One might think that ROUX is the best thing to happen to Portland in years. Not the case. Roux is nothing but a PR monster. The food feel short in every area. The spinach salad- bland, deviled ham-bland and gross, short ribs- bland and boring. The potatoes were crunchy and undercooked. The Julup was gross and I am a big fan of Julups. The service was too attentive. Roux was very expensive for what you get and where oh where is the creole' cajun influence. You don't get to call yourself Creole' just because you have mustard greens and pickled okra(yuck). On the up side of things the banana fritters for dessert were very nice, but not worth the HYPE!!!!!!!! I will not be going back any time soon. Pros: banana fritters Cons: food, location, expensive more

New favorite restaurant in Portland 11/19/2005

I love this place. I have been several times and tried many things. The crawfish pie is to die for and the croque monsieur salad is a favorite! The Pasty chef really knows what she is doing. We loved the blue cheese bisquits with apples. Overall N. Portland is changing because of this wonderful restaurant. The staff is welcoming and it always feels like home. Oh and the deli Bon Temps is wonderful two. Especially the shrimp po boy and the muffuletta. more

User review by alexisd 11/18/2005

The service was pretty good, but I disagree about the ambiance; I found it very cold- it felt like a corporate restaurant. I do agree on the food being typical of the Northwest area and not "French Creole" as they attempt to identify this restaurant. Coming from New Orleans however, I'm a harsh judge of this. My jambalaya was average, and my husband's rabbit was very good. For now I'll stick to Acadia. Pros: service Cons: location, ambiance more

Yummy 11/15/2005

Great new addition to North Portland. The resturant food is excelent as is the attached deli's. Great drinks as well! Pros: Great food more

User review by amynokes 11/14/2005

I've eaten at Roux twice & it's exactly the kind of restaurant that North Portland needed. I wouldn't describe the food as French Creole however - Pacific Northwest would be a better description. The flavors were wonderful - we sampled 4 different dishes and the short ribs just fall off the bone, they're so tender and the pork tenderloin with fig sauce is delicious. The ambiance is also excellent - low lighting, good attention to interior details, not too loud for conversation. The waitstaff is friendly & knows the wine list. Definitely make reservations. Pros: Excellent Flavors, Good Prices, Nice Ambiance Cons: Bad Parking more

  • In Short
Just a block from the North Interstate train line, this former drapery factory has been transformed into a huge, welcoming neighborhood bistro. The large space is awash in warm neutral colors, with semi secluded booths, closely spaced tables and a hopping bar area. The menu offers genteel Southern favorites like grilled oysters, fried soft shell crab, shrimp Creole and molasses brined pork chops. Desserts are creative takes on classics, like the chocolate dipped donuts with a cup of coffee ice cream.
