this is by far the most discusting petstore. all the puppies/older dogs are living in urine/poo covered cages. the dogs are complelty overpriced and have EXTREME health problems. their feet are injured from living on bar floors. ask ANYONE and they will tell you NO animal should live with a barred floor. there was once a dog there for over 2 years, sick, obvious medical conditions, and too overpriced for me myself to save. the dogs are not regularly excersized or even played with. the birds are obviously stressed out because they are plucking out their own feathers. i especially feel bad for the ones that are ""not for sale"" because they have to live the rest of their lives in that terrible place. puppies drink out of water bottles? i guess they are hampsters now. the owners and employees are completly rude. even the 7 year old employee will give you the ""know it all"" attitude. puppies are matted with eye/ear infections from living in complete filth. some of the puppies cant even stand up. they are not given chew toys so they tend to chew on the metal bars. they lie about the breed and size the puppy will become. my friend SAVED two puppies from there and was told they would be 5 lbs chihowa mixes. they both reached 25 lbs. they both had worms and eye/ear infections and were given a bath the second they got home because they were covered in urine. i understand puppies go potty a lot but if you were sucessfully running a good petstore you would clean their cages 7-8 times a day. if you cannot do that then you obviously shouldnt own a business that entitles that. To start, I have worked in a few pet stores for two years. I am a pet owner myself. I have owned dogs, birds, rabbits and other small animals. I went to this store while on holiday, and it was terrible. I check-in every time I come back to Michigan in hopes that it has changed for the better. It is disgusting. Every time I have gone, I am appalled by the conditions that the animals are forced to live in. This has been going on for over two years. The rabbits are in glass aquariums with urine-soaked pine shavings. Rabbits have delicate respiratory systems, and that is one of the worst ways to have them displayed. Would you want a pet rabbit that has chronic respiratory problems due to being neglected or improperly cared for prior to its purchase? There was feces in the animal's food bowls, urine and feces scattered all over the cages, and there were insects in the cages with them. The urine/feces build-up had to have taken at least four-to-five days to accumulate. This was not an overnight mess. The insects were the little flying type and were pestering the rabbits and sitting near their eyes. Not a pretty sight. I saw one of the employees kicking a rabbit cage while I was in there, as well. That is not professional at all. The dogs were in bad conditions, as well. Some of the puppies were in cages so small that they could not even stretch out properly. There were no toys in any of their cages. The birds looked terrible, too. All of them had soiled plumage. Some of the larger parrots and macaws had plucked their feathers out of their chests. Some bird illnesses can do this, but most of the time it is from boredom. There were very few toys in their cages, as well. The lady I talked to, the owner, I assume, was very rude and did not seem to care about the animal's welfare. In my opinion, this store should be closed down for animal cruelty/neglect. Wow, what a lesson in opposites. Some reviews are HORRIBLE, some glowing and a few I actually believe. NO animal enterprise with ever be spotless- we're talking about animals here. Nor do I believe it's caked on, dried, yada yada yada. State vet has been there 8 times and found no reason to revoke the license or ""shut down"". If you expect an animal to appear in a happy home setting- search for it there. If you purchse from a retail establishment don't pay and sign for what you want to cry about later. My last dog purchase was an outdoor flea market on a weekend travel, in a small wire cage on bare ground! OH THE HORROR! Yes, that is sarcastic I bought 2 for the price of 1, chose not to send in the AKC papers and paid a whopping $100 total. THEN- I took responsibility for what I chose to buy. Two years later, asleep at my feet, doing fine. I ran across this mess by reading an online news article, commented and followed along for the last couple days. I'm only about an hour and a half away so am hoping I get time to go visit since some seemed to think I am local or whatever. Gibralter Trade Center does NOT care if you complain about the Meyers and the pet shop, they make over a grand a WEEK renting to Shelley and Dave, In fact Pollywood pays the most rental there, so complaining to them they just don't care if you come back or not. When I worked for 2 yrs there, the old manager (no longer there) got 3-4 complaints a week and there was nothing he could do, because the owner Bob, likes that big money coming in every week. I was there last weekend; and my family and I were looking at purchasing a puppy. They are very overpriced compared to private breeders and other petstores in the area. But I didn't see anything disgusting. The cages were clean. Some of the puppies looked restless, but after having kids banging on the glass all day, I think its to be expected. I personally didn't apprecitate the location of the birds, my small children of course wanted to try and touch as they are located outside of the ""door""; but again, the birds were beautiful and looked to be properly taken care of. I can't say for sure against or in support of other peoples claims, but had it not been for the overpricing, we certainly wouldn't have hesistate to buy a new member of our family! I have been a customer of Pollywood Pets for years. I have never witnessed the terrible conditions I have read about. I have bought two parrots from them two Jack Russel terriers and some turles all my animals were healthy never had a problem. The only problems I have encountered is Shelley and how very rude she can be. Once she has made her money from you that is it she is done with you. She really could take some lessons in how to treat her customers, they are the reason you live in such a nice house Shelley. After reading all the negative things about her pet store I doubt I would ever buy another animal from her. I read the one blog about how she talks about her customers I truly believe this,I have spent thousand in her store and get treated like dirt whenever I walk in there. Yesterday my husband and I went to the Gilbrater Trade Center to walk around. I was absolutely horrified when we walked past the Pollywood Pet Store on premise. Those poor puppies and dogs looked so pitiful in their dirty cages that were full of feces and urine. Most of the dog's fur looked dirty and matted, and their eyes were encrusted with the gunk that comes out of their eyes and has never been washed off. Two of the dogs were just lying there and looked absolutely miserable, while others were twirling around in their cages trying to get out. They all looked so helpless and hopeless. I was infuriated that these animals were in such conditions! When I spoke to the owner about how awful the conditions were, I was told ""these dogs are taken better care of then I take care of myself"". How can this store be left to operate? Why isn't it shut down? Where can I file a formal complaint? I could not sleep last night thinking about how awful it must be for those puppies and animals kept there. I am so disgusted with our state legislation allowing this place to still be in business. The pets are in horrible conditions. The stench of feces and urine is so strong, it comes right through the glass where these animals are caged. They must stand on the cage grates instead of a solid surface. The cages are full of feces and urine. The water is contaminated with feces. The dogs twirl around in circles in their cages because they are so small. Kittens all share one tiny litter box with only one cup of litter for all of them. The kitten cage smells horrible. I saw a bird with the right side of its beak broken. Owner Shelly Meyers needs a wake up call. Please contact the MHS, Peta and Governer Granholm, do whatever is necessary to shut this down. Eventually someone will listen. I've been in Gibraltar Trade Center at least a half dozen times in the last couple of years. EVERY time I pass Pollywood Pets when I'm there the dogs look miserable. I even bought a little dog from Pollywood Pets two years ago only because I fell in love with her. But I never will again. Luckily, she's been healthy. She looked very depressed when I bought her. And yes, she goes to the vet regularly. BUT...........the dogs at Pollywood appear very unhappy; they either look depressed or are literally trying to scrape their way out of the cage. The cages look dirty. These dogs look like they get no exercise. Don't tell me they do. No one is there four days a week. Everyone who sees these poor creatures gets this same feeling. I purchased an African Grey parrot a little over 11 years ago from Pollywood. At that time it was mostly parrots being sold there in not exactly the cleaniest conditions, Some of the birds were plucked and one Cockatoo I remember was missing a talon or two. I got a good price ($850) on what I was told was a 10 week old still unweaned African Grey, sold a canister of handfeeding formula and sketchy indtructions on handfeding. It was just as well for me but the Grey was at least six months and was already weaned. OTOH I do remember I was given a phone number to call if I had any problems. I didn't. My advice for anyone that wants to purchase a parrot there is if you aren't experienced don't. As to my AG she is now over eleven, has had no health problems and I'm well satisfied with her. more
