I don't want to be too much of a critic when the food is good. And it was.... How do I say this... If you are the Manager of a restaurant, I would think you would be the last p...

Great Food! Not just a place to eat...an experience 6/27/2006

I walked in thinking this place was just another trendy hot spot in the beach scene which generally comes with bad food and bad service. But as soon as I got inside I was greeted very cordially by the hostess although I did not have a reservation. She told me it would be a short wait and that I could grab a quick drink at the bar. By the time my friend arrived the table was ready and we were sat right away. Soon after being sat the server came by and told us about the evening specials one of which was a delicious fig salad. It was so refreshing to be at a place where they actually have authentic european food. The server told me all about the menu. I was suprised to learn from the owner, when he came by to check on us, that he had his mother in from Greece to help prepare the menu! The feta, he said, comes from his hometown Epirus. It was amazing. The best feta I have ever had. I didn't get a chance to try anything from there interesting wine menu...but I definitely will be going back again. I had a delicious ""aphrodite"" which was actually huge...a bit too much alcohol. We did wait a while for the desert, but it was definitely worth it. The chocolate mousse was amazing. All in all it was a great experience. It's not your average dine and run type of place. Pros: Great food, service, and patio seating is lovely on a nice day. Cons: Can get a bit crowded between 7 and 8...better to go later more

warm, friendly and delicious! 5/7/2006

i have stopped by petros a couple of times for lunch while on my walks and always had a lovely time. the food is outstanding--house salad just amazing. not thinking that i would need a reservation on a wednesday night, i stopped in with a girlfriend only to find the restaurant packed. as we walked in the door i worried that we would not be able to have dinner there at all. rachel, the hostess, remembered my name and told me that the restaurant was indeed full, but if i would order a cocktail--aphorodite she recommended--that as soon as she had anything at all, we would be seated. only about 15 minutes later, she found us a darling little table by the window. our dinner was exceptional and the service attentive. petros himself even greeted us at our table. these personal touches made our night. Pros: every dish worthwhile, friendly staff more

Fabulous New Restaurant In Manhattan Beach 4/21/2006

Petros is a fabulous new resturaunt in Manhattan Beach. Its great for lunch and dinner on the patio or inside. the food is excelent and my wife and i have tried most everything on the menue. The bar is great and the drinks are large well prepared and presented with style. We highly recommend Petros. Ask for him and you will meet a new friend. Pros: Great Food, Great Ambience, Great Staff Cons: Its Very Busy 7PM more

Too much hype, not enough delivery 4/7/2006

We are always excited at the idea of a restaraunt arriving in the area that will be amazing, so were excited when Petros opened it's doors. I think other locals were hoping for the same(it's always packed)...a decent restaurant that didn't require a drive to the other side of town! Petros ended up being a HUGE disappointment...overcrowded, overpriced and marginal food at best. We knew at the appetizers that we were in trouble...we ordered the combo of dips....only so-so....they tasted like they came from a container. My husband was excited to have his favorite Greek dish..Moussaka...it came out luke warm and he said it reminded him of a TV dinner. My meal was no better. After the unimpressive meal, we got the bill-PRICEY. Maybe because Petros is new it still needs to find its groove, but until I hear more good news on the street, I will not go back more

Teach your hostess to act like she cares 4/1/2006

I was ready like all of the other excited customers to try out the new eatery, Petros. Unfortunately, I made my reservation for the patio on a night when it rained. The patio by the way does not have the view promised by the website...that one is really from Greece. As I arrived to my reservation happy to sit outside, I was told that it was raining by a rather emotionless hostess who could have cared less about me as a customer. She said without a tinge of remorse...""You can wait three hours and return at ten"". This place would characteristically be suited for a snooty Hollywood neighborhood, not the laid back, kinder atmosphere of Manhattan Beach restaurants and hostesses. Cons: Crowded, Overpriced more

Don't eat here - ever. 3/25/2006

I read the LA Times review, and I read the CitySearch review - they are wrong... this place is awful. Okay, the food was decent - nothing to write home about - but decent. A nice selection of greek wines, cheeses and dips that I enjoyed. The service however, was the worst I've ever experienced. We were ignored the whole night, our water wasn't refilled once, we asked for more bread and were promptly ignored or forgotten, our dessert took half an hour, etc. Normally, when I pay $100 for a two person meal, I expect great, very personal service. Don't expect that at Petros - heck don't even bother going. This place is a waste of time - I just want to make sure no others waste their time here. Pros: Appetizers, Decor Cons: Service, Service, Service more

Overpriced and overhyped. Mediocre at best. 3/21/2006

As a USC alum, I really wanted to like this place. I enjoy listening to Petros Papadakis' radio show, I love USC football, and I love good restaurants, so I figured this would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, my experience was very sub par. From the $12 well drinks to the $32 fish (with bones in every bite), to the overcrowded and surprisingly plain ambiance, this restaurant was a complete let down. You're better off skipping dinner and spending your $350 (our tab for 6 people) on drinks at Shade next door. more

Not worth the hype... 3/21/2006

Although my meal was quite good (roasted leg of lamb), 4 of the other 5 people I ate with were not at all happy with theirs. The sea bass was especially ""fishy"" and the fish special that night full of bones in every bite. There was not enough room for our table of 6 and on top of everything else, the drinks were Hollywood-club-priced ($12 for cocktails, $10 for beer) and it was $400 without tip for a party of 6 on a regular Saturday night. Not worth the value - won't go again. Pros: atmosphere Cons: crowded, metered parking more

Opa! 3/20/2006

My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and had wonderful service, great recomendations and excellent meals. The chef came out to greet us and was genuinely concerned about our experience. We are very happy to have this new restaurant in our neighborhood. I highly recomend the Petros salad and combination of dips. Pros: friendly staff more

good new addition 2/20/2006

We actually had a very pleasant experience. We had a group of 8 and were seated promptly at 8, our reservation time. The wait staff recommended good appetizers and wines. I especially enjoyed the sesame feta with honey. The roasted chicken was very tasty. Pros: Good Parking, Nice Atmosphere Cons: Limited wine list more

Too new or just a bad workflow? 2/12/2006

They seem to take more reservations than they can handle. For the 8pm reservation, the dinner was served after 10pm. That is after a bottle of wine, intended to have with dinner, was fully consumed. No bread refill. No candle for a birthday dinner. No water refill unless you ask, repeatedly......and forgotten. Some of customers were offered the patio chairs (hard seat) inside the restaurant. Other people whom we talked to waited for more than 1 hour until they finally got seated. They were told ""3 more minutes"" ""just cleaning your table now"" for an hour. The food is average Greek ""fusion"". Saganaki is served cold and chewy. (Is that not supposed be on fire?) The portion is not generous. I understand they are new and everything, but I have never seen such a bad workflow in any of new restaurants around, ever. more
